hmmmmm surely there's fics out there that explore the mechanics of how their particular version of a soulmate au works, but do I wanna spend umpty-million hours digging for them? not really
#i don't tend to read soulmate au stuff but afaik the characters don't tend to think all that much about how it works#maybe they get mad or upset at the universe in general when they're in denial over who their soulmate is#but like. do they ever go on a quest to find The Cosmic Matchmaker™️ and ask why they chose [insert au's soulmate indicator]#to show who someone's soulmate is?#is there just one Cosmic Matchmaker™️??? or a bored department throwing darts at a board???#do people in soulmate aus write non-soulmate au fics and argue about how one would hope to find their soulmate in such a universe#can there be multiple kinds of soulmate indicators in the same universe and can they be mismatched or can a person have more than one#like the name of their soulmate is written on their arm and also there's a countdown on their wrist#or would that maybe only happen if you have more than one soulmate at the same time#anyway. I was overcome with a Need for a hanahaki fic a while back and there was a really good simpatico one#that explored it as more of a rare medical condition caused by repressing strong emotion or st like that than as a mystical thing#also iirc it was like. coughing up crystallized energon in a flower (or petal?) shape instead of actual flowers
