Apropos of nothing, I never vibe with any Essek characterization in which he goes out of his way to try to come up with a way for Caleb to live beyond his years magically, particularly when it involves experimentation.

Essek canonically is from a culture where functional immortality is the norm, and expected, and frankly was probably pushed on him (probably in the "you'll change your mind when you're older" kind of way), and even with how normalized it would've been to him growing up, he still rejected it because he didn't want to mess with his autonomy and his interests.

Why the hell wouldn't he respect, honor, and probably encourage Caleb's preference to live out his lifespan and then go peacefully when the time came?

#anyway was just thinking about it today. do in fact think 'so consecution???' was the 'you want to have kids right?' of the dens lol #like. listen. I did write a consecuted caleb. and I had to fucking THINK about that #and essek tells him not to! and caleb wouldn't have if there'd been anyone else they could trust to go through with the experimentation!#like that is VERY much what would've happened if there had been another option. like writing that was just 'no one here Wanted this'#so I don't think there is No circumstance in which caleb would choose that #but it'd have to be EXTREMELY extenuating circumstances and for significantly more reasons than simply 'I want more time with my partner'#and like. just trying to live longer? absolutely not.#but per the actual text of the epilogue caleb does get to live pretty contentedly doing the work he wants to do.#critical role #essek thelyss #shadowgast #cr meta
