guys what if i want to make my own apollo justice game.
#i need to write a prequel to aa4 pls pls pls pls pls#okay get this: so phoenix isnt disbarred yet and he doesnt have trucy. hes still taking and winning cases#one day he gets a call from edgeworth and hes all like ''wright i need your assistance'' and hes like what for and edgeworth goes#''ive been given the most ridiculous case and i think youre the only man in law who can take care of it''#so phoenix bikes his ass to the detention center and boom. child behind bars#and phoenix is like ??? hey kid what are doing here. and this kid is the most surly mfer on the planet like you couldnt get-#-a word out of him if you tried. hes kinda giving phoenix the stink eye too but hes just the littlest guy on earth#and phoenix feels bad for him so he tries to get a rundown of the case (maybe edgeworth gave him an autopsy report or smth beforehand)#but get this. the kid still wont speak. he hasnt even moved a muscle. and after some prodding you find out this little dude-#-doesnt speak english (i dont love aa6 but i think apollos tragic backstory can be interesting so we're going w that but taking it seriousl#anyways so maya is like omg this kid is speaking khurainese but hers is kinda broken bc shes not from the mainland and only knows it-#-from like prayers#so you only get bits and pieces of the kids testimony. plus he still doesnt wanna talk bc ''dhurk told me not to talk to you''#so you start following the new lead but you ask too many questions and apollos like oh shit i said too much and wont talk to you anymore#but now you have two leads: khur'ain and a man named ''dhurk'' plus the fact that this is kid might be new to america since-#-he cant speak english but is smack dab in the middle of california. its all v curious and phoenix wants to get to the bottom of it#for the rest of the case i feel like it would go in the direction of ''we dont know exactly whats up w this dhurk guy or where this kid-#-came from but we do get him acquitted and phoenix is able to save him from the dark path he was heading towards'' thus steering apollo-#-in the direction of law and giving him a wayyyy better reason than aa6 gave him <3#i kind of like the interlinked nature of ace attorney's storytelling. like everything leads into smth else and everyone is impacted-#-by another person before they even become properly entangled w each other's lives#like how mia faced dahlia years before she met phoenix but dahlia was the one to connect them#or how trucy gave phoenix the diary paper but she's also the one who ropes apollo into the waa. even before they know they're siblings#or how lamoire left apollo and trucy as children and when they reunite as adults they cant recognise each other but they all find each-#-other anyways#i could go on but i think this could be cool yknow esp bc i think the most interesting thing about apollo's aa6 backstory is his life-#-post dhurk. like where did he stay? was he a foster kid? was he put into the system? how did that affect him? what kind of ppl took him in#i just wanna know how that whole thing would have effected him bc like when yiu think about it how did he even get to america?? his dad's#-considered a terrorist. idk man i think its interesting and apollo and dhurks interactions are one of the only good parts of aa6

Ok but Dead Fast: Night of the Living (2002) has no business being considered the worst Dead Fast movie when the MCU (Murder Cinematic Universe) not only retconned his origin story to make him a virus zombie rather than a curse zombie (which throws off his entire arc about being something more than his deeds!) AND made him be allied with B.L.I.G.H.T. of all organizations because Like say what you will about NOTL and the forced heterosexual romantic plot but at least 1) it gets what makes Dead Fast a hero and 2) GIVES HIS LOVE INTEREST A PERSONALITY AND SOMETHING TO DO

Literally
Also they made the villain Dr. Igorable's motivations so laughable like..... so his wife got turned into a zombie and he wants to cure her? Ok? Did she ask for it? She doesn't even have any groaning lines. Im not even a zombie but that was offensive as hell. Like in the original comics he wants to straight up undo all forms of zombism forever

NO FR LIKE....... so suddenly the eugenics obsessed human is tragic because being a zombie must be such a tragedy you guyyyysssss -_- and wanting to get rid of an entire monster type is ok. I swear that movie has turned monster attitudes towards zombies back into the 80s

I am not sure if I'm overstepping here but, furthermore, the addition of Pendulum to the movie was unnecesary. Stereotyping shapeshifters as untrustworthy and traitorous is something of a past era. Either leave the character behind, or change it entirely.

The MCU is so dreadful, it's irrevocably turned me into one.

Leshy!Steve Rogers x female reader; Steve Rogers x female reader
summary: You enter the woods hoping to gain the ancient being's mercy and help. However, you hadn't expected how truly powerful he is, or what price he will ask of you.
*Leshy is a deity of the forests in Slavic mythology. He rules over the forest and hunting.
warnings: sort of monsterfucking (though Leshy isn't exactly a monster, more of an eldritch entity); consensual, with a slight dash of dub-con; tiny bit of manipulation; smut;
Author's Note: This is a story written for Aspen's (@buckets-and-trees) Enchanted Birthday Festival. Early happy birthday, love! ❤️ I've been toying with the idea of Leshy!Steve for a bit and Aspen's challenge was the perfect opportunity to work on it. Especially since she loves forests, plants and all things wild nature 💚 Also a special shout out to @vonalyn who listened to me ramble about the hotness of Leshy!Steve when the idea first came to mind!
Tumblr media
“Are you willing to sacrifice?”
His voice echoed with the power of a booming wind, rattling your bones and swishing up your skirts.
The trees surrounding you seemed to grow out their branches, weaving into thick, green walls closing up. Sunlight, just moments ago filtering through the tree crowns, had disappeared; but the dots of luminescent fireflies flickered on, filling the space with a deceptively warm glow.
You looked around, seeking for a path, or entrance through which you might escape, if you chose to. There was none. Within seconds you found yourself trapped in the depths of the ancient forest, with a being whose mercy you came to beg for.
When about an hour ago you stepped into the woods, you were bracing yourself for the sense of being watched, perhaps hunted. You haven’t considered how closely in contact with the powers of nature you’d come.
Your steps never faltered as the soft carpet of juicy grass beneath your feet seemed to grow more resilient the deeper into the woods you went; green straws springing back from being crushed under your shoe. The further you went, however, the dewy emerald grew sparse, shrinking into rich soil scattered with shards of bark, little leaves and pillows of moss.
Rays of sunlight filtered through the branches, casting glowy direction into the sacred altar hidden in the belly of the wilderness. It felt so peaceful, so relaxing, that you’d gladly sink into the shades of green and speckles of gold.
If not for the pounding of your worried heart, which knew that you were searching for more than reprieve.
Had you known what awaited, you’d listen to your heart’s anxious patter and run away.
But you were determined. Though your grandma would probably call it simple stubbornness.
You didn’t enter the woods to forage, nor to roam it to fill your soul with happiness. No, your feet carried you forward to face the greatest of dangers and beg for mercy.
Not only for yourself, but for the village and people who lived in fear, but still refused to abide by the ancient laws. Proud and focused on ways to increase wealth, they forgot there’s more in the world than just gold and war.
Powers mightier than any army. Beings greater and more dangerous than any king.
When wolves ripped to shreds one of the lumberjacks, everyone thought it to be a tragic accident. When two other people disappeared in the woods, never returning, others came up with ideas of them running away. Then a mother was seen screaming as wolves dragged her body into the forest. The child that followed, crying after its mum, disappeared. A day later a small fawn started prancing around the garden by the empty now household.
Still, people refused to bow to the entity that could be behind all of this, or at least held the power to end this madness. Or so you hoped.
Having packed a big wicker basket of offerings - jars of golden honey, cheese wrapped in paper, strings of colorful beads and pearls, folded silk, dried exotic fruit you got from the market - you carried it deep into the woods, to place them on the long forgotten altar where your ancestors paid their respects to the guardian of the forest and nature.
Leshy.
You expected to find the ancient, stone altar, with a deformed statue overgrown with moss. The plan was to lay your offerings there, spend some time bowing down and praying for mercy, then returning to the clueless village.
For a few beats it went like that. The birds still chirped, leaves rustled softly in the wind, your offerings laid motionless on the slab of stone.
Then, suddenly, ivy vines weaved up, covering the stone and your produce in a thick cocoon. The earth rumbled and melted, swallowing the altar whole.
Startled, you took a shaky step back and lost your balance, falling onto your butt. A split of a second when your gaze looked up at the darkening sky and when you returned it forward, he was already standing in front of you.
Whenever you thought of Leshy, no particular image came to mind. You always thought the creature to be an entity beyond human imagination.
He was that, but also… not.
He reminded a human man, but only at first glance.
Much taller, with shoulders broader than the blacksmith’s (whom you always thought to be the biggest man alive). His complexion was fair, but the veins in his arms were jewel green. His hair and beard seemed cast from various shades of gold, intertwined with russet bronze and chestnut reddish. Delicate, tiny vines crawled up his cheeks and along his forehead; like intricate tattoos.
From the thick mane of his silky looking hair sprouted majestic antlers. Thick and sturdy, their dark color with filaments of gold shining through. His eyes, when you met them, were a striking shade of blue-green. Rare and iridescent, like ponds bathed in the light of dawn.
“It’s been a while since a human has come to me.”
The entity’s voice was deep and low, both dangerous and soft, like a purr of a bear or a jungle cat.
“Are you Leshy?” You swallowed nervously.
“I’ve been called that, yes.” When he grinned, amused, the filigree vines on his body glowed luminescent.
“And you are?” He asked, courtly.
When you whispered your name, he leaned forward, bending slightly and outstretching his hand for you to take. As you slipped your shaky fingers into his palm, you felt the pulsing warmth seep through you. It reminded you of the sun-heated earth beneath bare feet.
As he helped you stand up, your gaze drifted up his body. You noticed that while most of his skin looked like any human’s flesh, a stripe along his left calf and thigh seemed textured like bark. A combination of moss and vines formed a fitting coverage around his narrow hips; yet you still caught the sight of a green vein slithering down his chiseled abdomen.
More gold-glowing, floral-like tattoos appeared ingrained into the skin along his ribs. Skin on top of his right shoulder looked to be made of bark, just like on his leg.
As much as he looked unworldly, you also found him majestic.
Beautiful, as nature itself.
“Those who know me, call me Steve.” He said, holding your hand in his and not letting you step away. “It's a shortened and funnily deformed version of Svyatobor.”
Lost in his eerie blue eyes, it took you a longer moment to realize what his name meant.
Breath hitched in your chest, your pupils widened as you stared up at him. All this time you believed Leshy is a creature brought to life and given a purpose by a god. That’s what all the legends suggested. It didn’t occur to you, it's a deity itself.
A god of the forest.
After a moment of complete stupor, shock gave way to a flash of fear. You bowed your head and started to fall onto your knees, to pay proper respect. However, his hand still holding yours pulled you up.
“None of that is necessary.” He assured you.
Though when you tipped your head up to look at him, Leshy’s gaze slid down your body in a slow, assessing study.
“At least not in that sense,” he murmured, licking his lips.
His eyes flicked back to yours. The stark blue pulsing with more green specks than before; as if his body came to life the same way nature sprung back as the snow melted away.
You felt a rush of heat through your veins at the suggestive implication of his words.
“What have you come here for, little fern?”
“To beg for mercy for my village.” Once again, you lowered your gaze. “People have been disappearing and being hurt. Swallowed by the forest or its creatures. I plead for no more blood to be spilled.”
Steve’s face betrayed no sign of irritation. For a split of a second you thought you saw a flash of sunlit amusement in his irises, but no mockery followed. He studied you for a long moment, not saying a word.
When he moved, it was slow and nonthreatening. You still startled, though perhaps it was at the loss of contact as his hand gently released your fingers.
He walked over to where the ground swallowed the altar with your offerings. It was only then that you realized a thick carpet of clovers had filled the space where the table had been. Delicate leaves tilted toward Steve’s legs, brushing against him with the softest of rustles, as if they were purring for him.
“You brought me honey, which you poured out of the goodness of your heart. But don’t you know that our wild bees’ honey is sweeter?” Steve asked, walking barefoot through the small field of clovers back toward you.
He stepped even closer this time and you felt the unique warmth radiating from him. A little stifling, like the humidity of the forest soaked in rain that was evaporating in the high summer sun.
It was making you dizzy in a very pleasant way.
“You gave me expensive fabrics, but nothing feels as soft and luxurious as petals of early spring’s flowers.” He circled you, like an animal may circle its prey. “None of your colorful beads shine as bright as drops of dew in the moonlight.”
“I-” What were you supposed to say? You didn’t have much and what you gave away was a big sacrifice in terms of your day to day survival.
You also didn’t think Leshy would be pleased, if you brought seasoned meat. He was, after all, a protector of wild animals. That sort of disrespect may have killed you on the spot.
Suddenly, you felt his hand brush along your waist. A light, fleeting touch, but enough to send a jolt down your spine.
“Moreover, you try to barter a single basket for dozens of lives.” Steve stopped in front of you.
“I’m sorry.” You lowered your head in shame, feeling the burning tears gather beneath your eyelids.
He was right and you didn’t think of that when you were packing your basket. It made you feel helpless, that you had nothing else to offer.
“Don’t be.” Steve tilted your chin up with the pads of his fingertips. His gaze was soft, glinting sincerity.
“You still did more than any other human has for decades. I’m just pointing out that a life can be compared in cost to another life, nothing else. No riches equal a heartbeat.”
You understood the value, agreed with it completely. But it made the situation look unsolvable. The fate of your village was doomed to go through horrors, since there was no other way to barter for it.
Then you registered the warmth of Steve’s fingers still holding your chin. His thumb angled to rub along your lower lip. You were in the hands of a powerful deity. Steve may have appeared nonthreatening, but he was still an ancient entity demanding a sacrifice.
No riches equal a heartbeat. You had a heartbeat. A rapidly fluttering one, at the moment; bouncing against the bars of your ribcage in fear of being ripped from it.
“You mean-” You swallowed a bile rising in your throat. “My life for theirs?”
You wanted to help your village, to help people in general. That need to care and nurture have always been so deeply ingrained in you. But you wanted to live! You wanted to experience feelings and wonders, joys and losses. You weren’t ready to meet the end so soon, so unexpectedly. The two needs - to help and to survive - were clashing in violence.
Steve’s hand moved from your chin to cup your cheek. Since he was the only comfort available at the moment, you leaned into his touch. A soothing shush spilled from his lips as he caught your panicked gaze and locked it with his.
“I’m not thirsty for blood, little fern.” He assured you. “I long for company.”
Somehow, looking into his eyes and sinking into the warmth his closeness provided, you felt the fear subsiding. Slowly, still leaving instinctive distrust, but it eased away.
“You want a friend?” You blinked, a little confused.
Of course you understood what he meant the moment he said it, but a voice of reason wouldn’t accept the fact this beautiful, powerful being wanted to bed you. Out of all the things a deity may demand, fucking an unimpressive mortal like you shouldn’t be on the list.
Steve laughed at your question, genuinely amused.
Instantly, choirs of birds joined his mirth in a tinkling melody that carried through the forest.
“No.” Steve shook his head; smile-caused crinkles appeared in the corners of his eyes and the filigree vines along his skin curled.
“I’ve got friends. You would meet them, if you stayed.” It surprised you, teasing your curiosity about what other beings roamed these forests.
Your thoughts didn’t stay focused on the matter for long. Not when Steve’s hand slid down the column of your neck, his other arm weaving around your waist and pulling you close to his body.
Very close. Even through the fabrics of your skirts and corset you felt the hard planes of his muscles against the softness of your body. Your hands landed on his chest, at first in an attempt to brace yourself to perhaps fight him off, but any force to push away dissipated. Instead, your fingertips were tingling.
Steve’s breath teased your skin as he leaned down, trailing his lips along your jaw.
“I want intimacy. Passion. And devotion.” He murmured, gripping the back of your neck as his other hand dipped lower to squeeze the flesh of your bottom.
Abruptly, your whole body tensed and you gasped when something coiled around your ankles. Thin and tickling, possibly an ivy vine. It curled along your legs, reaching upwards. Teasing your skin with a brush of leaves and forcing your legs slightly apart.
Steve’s lips grazed the shell of your ear.
“I wish to splay you on the moss and have it soak up your sweet juices as I play with your pretty cunt.”
You jerked in his embrace, but your core ignited. Heat pooled low in your abdomen, spreading down in a quick wave and filling your folds.
“I want to stretch you on my cock and have you call me your god not out of fear, but the pleasure I give you.” The vines that weaved around your legs didn’t reach far up your thighs, but if they had, your wetness would coat the delicate leaves.
“I want to fill you, until you bloom flowers and berries.”
Breathing became hard as the images filled your head; though you doubted it was a trick of his, more your own imagination eagerly supplying possibilities Steve words enticed.
When Steve unexpectedly released you and took a step back, you shivered as if you were dropped into a cold cave. Deprived of light and warmth.
He appeared more inhuman as he stretched to his full height and loomed over you.
Shaken from the daze Steve’s proximity and dirty words have caused, you faced the deal he was proposing with a clearer mind.
You’d be bound to the forest as long as Steve wanted to keep you, having to abandon your human life and plans. But you would be alive. And so would the villagers, some of whom were your friends.
You chanced one more look at the wall of branches and vines, briefly wondering if he’d let you go had you refused. Probably. But it was uncertain what awaited your village, or any other, if you backed out.
Taking a deep breath, you turned back to Steve. You gripped the fabric of your skirt to cover the nervous shaking of your fingers.
“Yes,” the word rolled out on your tongue like a faint whisper, but he heard it.
His eyes shimmered with tempting joy, like the reflection of sunlight on the rippling sheet of a lake. In a blink of an eye he was right in front of you, his hands on your hips.
“I’ll be good to you, my little fern.” Tip of his nose nudged along yours, warm breath softening your lips into compliance.
When he kissed you, it felt as if berries burst on your tongue, filling your mouth with sweet flavor.
Your hands traveled up his arms, clutching his shoulders. The one covered in bark provided a new, unique sensation. It grazed your fingertips, but also felt grounding. He didn’t have to pull you closer, your body turned pliant on its own volition.
Steve swallowed your gasp, gripping your hips tighter, as thick vines of ivy rapidly wound around you. They covered you whole, like they had that stone altar before. It felt scary and suffocating, but as soon as the cocoon of greenery swallowed your forms fully it burst apart; leaves scattered around in a fountain.
You broke the kiss, tipping your head away and looking around. You were no longer in the same spot. You were in no recognizable place, to be exact.
If you could find a name for it, the heart of the forest would be it.
Light green grass spread around in a thick carpet, with patterns of bluebells and lilies of the valley. Graceful, tall birches circled the place, their silvery leaves catching chunks of sun rays. By a spot where wild rose bushes weaved an intricate arch stood a big bed. Easily high at hip height, woven tightly of green moss and periwinkles.
Steve didn’t give you much time to admire. With a firm push of his hand he tilted your head back towards him. Kept cupping your cheek as he kissed you again, more urgently this time. Demanding.
He released you to tug on your clothes, doing a swift job with layers of your skirts, but grumbling a bit when trying to untie your corset.
“Won’t need that anymore here, little fern,” he purred as your breasts spilled out.
Then he was picking you up, big hands gripping the back of your thighs and hoisting you easily. He sat on the bed, slowly easing you down until you were standing between his spread legs.
It was only then that you realized the coverage around his hips was gone, leaving him exposed in all his glory.
You couldn’t help peeking down. Your pussy clenched around nothing as you stared at the impressive size of him. Your mouth filled with the aftertaste of berries and your own saliva as his cock twitched upwards.
Steve’s hands roamed over your body, exploring your curves and lines with utmost fascination. He didn’t hesitate leaning forward to capture a stiff nipple into his mouth, sucking eagerly. His antlers gave you a scare as they brushed so close to your skin, but not once did his movement cause you pain.
Feeling a little bolder, you slipped one of your hands between the roots of his antlers and into his hair. They felt soft and silky. Your other hand gripped the top of his shoulder; the one where bark printed into your palm in a sensation you were finding more and more pleasant.
As Steve pulled back slightly, you slipped your fingers from his hair and across his face, mapping out contours and scratching through his beard. He gripped one of your legs under your knee and pulled it up, placing your foot on the bed and spreading you obscenely. His eyes darkened, something wolfish glinting in them as his gaze settled on your puffed, wet folds.
“Show me how you touch yourself,” he demanded in a raspy voice.
The hand on your calf kept caressing and squeezing your flesh, while his other fisted his cock as your fingers dipped between your thighs.
None of your lovers ever expressed desire to see you pleasure yourself, but Steve’s gaze was so heated you didn’t feel shy. Quite the opposite, somehow it felt so easy and natural; even more arousing as Steve licked his lips in unmasked hunger.
“Let me taste you. I bet you’re sweeter and richer than any honey.”
You moaned, pushing two fingers inside and pumping them in and out a few times. When you brought your glistening digits to his lips, Steve licked them in a broad stroke of his tongue then took them into his mouth. His greedy sucking had your clit pulsing wildly.
“Delicious,” he hummed in delight, “and so ready for me, aren’t you?”
Swiftly, he grabbed your hips and pulled you over his lap. Your gasp at the sudden movement and the feeling of his cock against your inner thigh combined with Steve’s loud groan of pleasure, when you gripped his antlers to steady yourself.
“That’s it. Keep touching them.” He urged you on as he slid you down his shaft. “It’s as if you were gripping my cock.”
“Nghh!” You keened, tightening your desperate hold on the antlers as your walls stretched around Steve’s girth.
“Too big!” You whined, yet your hips followed the command of Steve’s hands as he guided you down.
“Shh, my little fern. Take it. I know you can.” He was mercilessly forcing you down, moaning as your tight, hot walls enveloped him. “All your sweet holes will learn to take all of me.”
By the time he was buried to the root, you were shaking in pleasure. Your cheek was pressed to Steve’s, your breath coming out in jagged, hot puffs. Where your breasts were squished into the hard planes of Steve’s chest, it felt as if the filigree vines pulsing beneath his skin moved to tease your nipples. Steve’s hands were splayed on your hips, holding you in place as he savored the feel of your pussy around him.
After a moment, he began rocking up into you and a few heartbeats later started bouncing you up and down his length. Soon your whimpers stretched into moans. Despite feeling boneless in his powerful hold, you also felt a surge of need to take from him as much as he was taking from your pliant body.
You held Steve’s gaze as you straightened your back and started riding him; your fingers squeezing his antlers.
When your climax hit, it was intense and unworldly.
The first burst of it felt like falling into a cool mountain streak, only for the next tremors to fill you with heat and glow. Your head spinned and your moans and cries intertwined with small gasps of laughter. It was everything at once! Running with the wolves, picking fresh raspberries, twirling around in summer rain.
And when Steve followed soon after, cumming with a loud roar, each spurt of his seed seemed to immerse you in hot springs.
It was a rush of sensations; overwhelming, but addictive.
When you met Steve’s gaze - both of you breathing heavily and still rocking into the continuous rhythm of aftershocks - you had no idea your irises bore first specks of inhuman green. All you knew was that you wanted more.
And so you demanded it.
Steve’s grin at your responsiveness was near predatory. He pinned you beneath him on the soft mossy pillows, placed your ankles over his shoulders and plunged into you in a hard thrust that had your scream echoing through the woods.
Soon you’d be bound to him and the forest with every cell of your changing body.

The Briar Siblings' Lies
It's very interesting that in the family of lies and secrets, the lies of the Briar siblings are included, and I'm pretty sure that will play a role whenever they find out about each other.
I expect Yor to be heartbroken and angry at Loid when she'll find out his lies, but I'd also expect her to be heartbroken and disappointed when she finds out how much Yuri lied to her.
Yor might have kept her own very dangerous secrets, but there are huge differences in their circumstances.
Tumblr media
Yor took up her assassin gig when she was just a teenager, orphaned and with a little brother to take care of. Amidst the cold war brewing, there would be various criminal organizations looking for people to drag in, and a poor, desperate, kind, and almost supernaturally strong teenage girl was the perfect recruit for Garden.
Whether this is Garden's initiative or not, Yor has a strong determination to kill her targets as quickly and as painlessly as possible, along with avoiding unnecessary bloodshed. She has studied human anatomy specifically for this very reason, to be able to kill her victims with mercy. She's realistic about the situations she's in, but if talking things through is even a tiny bit possible, she'll give it a try.
Tumblr media
Though her morals are slightly skewed for the average civilian - it's understandable to kill someone in self defense, but her main targets are situations where she plays judge, jury and executioner - she's still retained a lot of her humanity that allows her to be a kind person and a caring sister, mother and wife.
And then you have Yuri.
Tumblr media
Yuri fell victim to a more sinister kind of indoctrination - extremism and bigotry. Having grown up in poverty caused by the war and the deaths of his parents, and having an overwhelming wish to protect his sister, he was the perfect target for Ostania's nationalistic propaganda.
But the tragic background leading up to this choice and the want to protect his family is where his similarities with Yor's case end.
Yuri wasn't left with no other choices. Yor was already supporting him financially when he started working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and that was a job that he could stay at and be independent. He was older than Yor was when she became an assassin. I can assume that some underhanded methods were used to lead him into the duties of the SSS, but even so Yuri had more control of the situation, more choices to choose from, and more information at hand. It's directly opposite to Yor's circumstances.
Yuri tortures people. The SSS specifically want him, despite his young age and lack of experience, exactly because he won't hold anything back, even when it makes him feel conflicted.
Tumblr media
The SSS may be taking advantage of the ease with which he tortures people, but it's still something Yuri willingly participates in - and again, considering the fame of the SSS among civilians, it's almost certain Yuri knew what he was getting into. He's giving up his own humanity, going down a path of "us vs. them" and while Yor plays judge on who gets to live, Yuri plays judge on who gets to be treated like a human being.
While two similarly dangerous and demanding professions, and (at least according to what Franky says) following the same government's orders, it's two highly different cases. I think Yuri will be mostly horrified to learn what Yor went through for his sake, but Yor will be very understandably heartbroken. Yuri could understand that Yor had no other choice, but Yor will know that Yuri had all the best choices right in front of him, and yet he chose this.
And it's why I believe this is the revelation that will hurt Yor more. She could explain Twilight's lies by the fact that they didn't know each other before, she could explain Anya's secrets by her young age and innocence, but there will be very little for Yuri to stand on - and the thing is, Yuri knows that. He knows that what he's chosen to become isn't what Yor raised him to be.
Tumblr media
Currently he may be seeing himself as a martyr for his cause, that he needed to potentially break his sister's heart in order to protect her and "the country she lives in". He'd rather have her feeling heartbroken and betrayed by him than with her life and safety in danger. He'd rather her hate him than get hurt.
How will it hit him when he realizes she's already been doing the same for him, and has already been endangering her life for over a decade for not only his sake, but for the world in general too? When he realizes all the work he's been doing to protect her was in vain because she has been walking into danger herself all along?
It's a really interesting dynamic, because the revelation could either break them or make them. They both have a very heartwarming background together, they both love each other deeply, but it's a trial they'll both have to go through at some point.
(Anime only fan here, don't spoil me for the manga)

Dungeon Meshi Quick Reacts: CH45
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Slumber party!
Tumblr media
Fair, but consider: She deserves a little murder. As a treat.
Tumblr media
Kabru be like "IS THAT MY BACKSTORY???"
Tumblr media
That sure is....a ship. With no one on it.
Tumblr media
Ah, shit the Americans are here.
Tumblr media
Two things: Toshiro being tended to like a pretty pretty princess is hilarious.
And also, the fact that they think the elves can kill Falin......... hmmm.... Pressing X to doubt.
Tumblr media
............... oh. Laios. 😂
But also like. How was he MEANT to keep it silent? Put a little something in it? I thought since it was a magic bell you could code it to only ring when it's shaken with INTENT?
Tumblr media
Fancy ass house.
Also, Namari...........are you hitting that yet? Both of that?
Tumblr media
Oh, it's backstory time.
Tumblr media
Okay one: that's fucking tragic, it sounds like the Elves are just forcing the dungeons closed with no regard for how the ecosystem compensates and what people suffer by being in close proximity......
And another thing: Kabru. Kabru, isn't that what YOU'RE after? Having all the power?
Tumblr media
Why is this so much like that one meme where the girls at the party are looking at you.
Tumblr media
It's the same picture.
Tumblr media
Kabru that's. That's maybe not the way to go about it. you're going to give them MORE reasons to go in.
Tumblr media
Nevermind the governor not being into this 'good boy, now sign' talk, Toshiro's kinda right. Ya fucked up Kabru.
Tumblr media
No matter how far Laios runs, he cannot escape other people trying to tell him how to live his life. Poor guy. But at the same time...
Tumblr media
Is this real? Or a red herring?
Laios' father and mother seemed to be living relatively pious lives. They clearly had a good house, but it didn't seem like they were extremely rich. Then again, perhaps he's just a cousin of royalty? Is that why his parents wanted him to have children?
Tumblr media
They want to.... halt the growth of the dungeon? Is this another part of the natural ecosystem of things? Dungeons growing seems to point even more towards the idea that it's a gigantic, fleshpit-like creature instead of simply a construct.
Then again, constructs CAN be creatures. Like the golems.
Tumblr media
Elves not understanding how old humans are continues to be hilarious because like.
As humans, we HAVE this same concept of variant aging. Like. Dogs. We understand that dogs live less than us, and mature a lot slower. But this is.... COMMON KNOWLEDGE. Most people do not make it into adulthood without understanding that dogs mature within 1-2 years of their birth.
The fact that elves, a species with FAR more time on their hands, who have lived alongside other races for AGES....... have STILL not got the general concept of aging down....means their education is atrocious. Or they're all not paying attention.
Tumblr media
.......this. THIS is the most fascinating concept in this chapter.
The fallen.... turned into MONSTERS.
We know that dying inside the dungeon doesn't mean permanent death. But dying above-ground does.
We know that dying in the dungeon doesn't mean your body turns into a monster (aside from ghosts and ghouls?) ..... but dying aboveground.... DOES......?
WHAT'S THE TRUTH.
Tumblr media
👁👁
Hm.
Tumblr media
If Kabru and Laios fused, they could almost make one functioning human being.
Tumblr media
Senshi just beginning to speak in the middle of his own internal monologue is so real.
Tumblr media
...... what's going on there with the expression, buddy?
Tumblr media
Bread.......are they STILL carrying around flour with them?! How are they getting bread?!
Also, it's awesome that the eggs are canonically hard to crack, because it makes sense that they don't break during their many fighting events.
Tumblr media
Izutsumi really said ◉_◉
Tumblr media
Don't tell me Laios, who is sensitive to ghosts has ALSO been seeing things?
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie, that's highkey terrifying.
Tumblr media
Props to that ghost that's been following Laios around, not ever giving up hope that it can bother him into acknowledging it.
And also - hey, it already saved them once! that means it's probably not evil!
That, or it's the king of the bloody dungeon. Wouldn't that be something!

Do you think all the characters are assholes?
Because i think they are despite their tragic backstories and i also don't think they appreciate Yuu enough, except for maybe the first years
Tumblr media
I mean, the TWST characters are (mostly) inspired by Disney villains... Plus, they’re immature high schoolers still in the process of emotionally maturing. Of course they're not going to be perfect balls of sunshine. They're all going to be rude or have faults in their own ways, but they also have their strengths and charm points. I do call them assholes (lovingly), but I would hesitate to slap a singular label on any of the characters when they're all very well-rounded and morally ambiguous.
On the topic of Yuu, I think it makes sense that most of the cast doesn't really "appreciate" them. To begin with, most of the characters are not the openly sentimental types; they wouldn’t overtly express that gratitude even if it were present. Then we have to consider that Yuu isn't directly involved in their character growth or arcs in most cases; it's often the other characters who are confronting the OB boys or instigating, physically battling them to snap them out of it, and then comforting them afterwards.
As early as book 1, that pattern holds true. Ace is the one that initially pissed Riddle off. Adeuce are dueling Riddle. Ace decks Riddle and claims his last straw. Trey is the one calling out to Riddle as he's losing it. It's the members of Heartslabyul who gather around Riddle when he reawakens following the OB. (I'm not going to go through and list off what happens in every single book, but I'm sure you can think of many other instances... Lilia insulting Leona, Deuce and Epel having the heart-to-heart on the beach, Octavinelle's plot against Jamil, the twins checking up on Azul post-OB, etc.) To me, it feels like it is the boys and their bonds with one another responsible for the change, not Yuu's involvement. Yuu is usually along for the ride and actually does and says very little despite all the fandom jokes about "being the school's unpaid but overworked therapist" or Crowley's shallow claim that Yuu can help the boys learn to cooperate (which feels more like a vague ruse only shown in the prologue to shoehorn Yuu into the plot). There's actually very little in-game that shows them being active in helping the students change for the better. Much of the time, the boys can resolve their own struggles to get along without Yuu being there (like all those pair-ups in book 6–sure, it may have taken a while, but the fact remains that they did eventually resolve their own issues and cooperate without Yuu having to orchestrate for them; this also happens many times in events like Port Fest, Wish Upon a Star, Ghost Marriage, the Halloween events, etc). A very common complaint (at least among English speaking players) is that Yuu isn’t “involved enough” or that they don’t have a big impact on the events of the story. Therefore, most of the boys not feeling close or indebted to Yuu makes sense from their POV. What has Yuu actually and explicitly done to help them? Not much. It’s mainly in individual fan interpretations where Yuu/a Yuusona/an OC in Yuu’s role is actually able to play a more substantial part in each characters’ life and growth. In general, the standard in-game Yuu is more of a "fly on the wall" character that witnesses events unfold rather than someone who plays a large role in each book. The boys are seemingly the main characters, not Yuu. It's just convenient to have Yuu/a blank slate in the story because they, as an outsider, need TWST concepts explained to them (thus making it easier to give exposition to the players who may also be unfamiliar with the information). The first years, by comparison, are closer to Yuu simply because 1) Yuu is implied to be in the same year level as them (so they're more likely to be exposed to one another) and 2) their preestablished relationships with Grim, Ace, and Deuce opens them up more to first year interactions. "Friends of friends", if you will. It makes more sense than Yuu being appreciated and loved by everyone/most people in the main cast of 22ish. (How many people do you know irl that have 22ish significant friends?) They spend the most time together. Everyone else tends to stick to their own groups (with maybe the exception of Heartslabyul, since Yuu is already close with Adeuce). They’re just... not as intimate with Yuu, and therefore not as inclined to find much appreciation for them.
I want to clarify that this doesn’t mean there are zero instances of the characters outside of the first years expressing gratitude toward Yuu. Like, of the OB boys, it’s only Vil who consistently apologizes for the trouble he caused (note though: it’s not specifically to Yuu, but to everyone in the VDC/SDC squad. Yuu is then given prize money from most of the other boys as thanks for letting them crash at Ramshackle… Of those, only Kalim cites being grateful that he was able to stay and have fun with everyone because of Yuu green lighting the decision. This makes sense, as Kalim’s one of the few who wears his heart on his sleeve and is friendly to most. It just isn’t true for the majority of the cast, and we shouldn’t expect it to be.
As late as book 5, you can see characters like Leona not being so happy to be called out to or for Grim to act all buddy-buddy with him. That indicates to me that the rest of the cast is not that close to Yuu + related parties and doesn't have a real reason to be. (Note: I'm not counting character voice lines here as proof of friendliness with Yuu, as it can be argued that the relationships and events explored in the cards don't run in tandem with the main story and are meant more as fanservice for the players.)
Again, while it's not that fun to read in a narrative, it does leave things open-ended for anyone who wants to self-insert or to expand on those blank relationships for their own characters. I believe this is by design to appeal on an individual level to players. You get out of it what you put into it!

i had a vision and drew it - and even better, i got a fic idea from it!
johnny cage > discovery
johnny discovers his new powers unexpectedly. maybe he wasn't as ordinary as others thought.
warnings: johnny thinks he's dying and gets all crisis-y, established relationship
notes: imagine instead of activating his powers in a life or death situation, it randomly bodyslams him like a heart attack - and it scares the hell out of him. also i hope u like my silly sketch :3
masterlist <3
Tumblr media
• johnny's life was crumbling. his movies were flopping hard, and people were starting to forget his name. his spending habits were out of control, and you two were arguing about it so much that you grew tired of hearing your own voice. most days were the cold shoulder or shouting matches. things weren't looking great.
• it was during one of these matches when the shouting on his end abruptly paused, and he doubled over. your anger was shoved aside as you dashed forward to inspect his current state. but, just as soon as it started, it was over in a flash. johnny was startled, to say the least. his eyes were wide and he was panting.
• you guys assumed the stress was taking a toll on him, a physical toll. out of respect for his well-being, you held your tongue from that point on. or at least, you tried to. everything was relatively quiet until a mysterious yakuza member demanded the sword on your shared mantle. you would've thrown it at him if given the opportunity since the damn thing sent you back millions. johnny, however, wasn't as willing. fortunately for your safety's concern, he was the ultimate home security system, tying up the man after knocking him unconscious.
• we all know the rest. "what in the actual-" "i am the god of fire" "get your damn hands off him" "that's no special effect" "change the arc of your lives." blah blah blah. it was all a weird blur. apparently, you, johnny, and this new "friend" of yours were all chosen to fight for something bigger than a malibu disagreement. you were a fighter alongside your husband, but you did it competitively. johnny did it for the cameras, which isn't to say he's worse naturally. he could kick ass, and so could you, just in different directions.
• liu kang warned everyone that training would take months, as the tournament was far down the line. johnny grew impatient, and you grew tense with his lack of eagerness to actually train. regardless, you sparred and took the monk's advices to heart.
• johnny wouldn't tell you at first, since he didn't want to distract your own progress, but he would oftentimes catch himself feeling... funny, for lack of a better phrase. during meals, his eyes would unfocus and his hearing sounded underwater. at night, he'd toss and turn for hours in the cot beside yours. something felt wrong, really wrong. his chest felt fluttery and cold, like a sprite weaving between his ribs. it scared the holy hell out of him, considering how prone is family is to heart attacks.
• "great session! whaddya say to a well-deserved break?" he'd announce out of concealed desperation to the other earthrealmers, hoping that someone would agree and he'd be able to excuse himself to loosen his collar and sit down for a moment. it was after the fifth time asking in a day that you approached him with genuine concern.
• "honey, are you alright?" you asked gently, putting a hand on his shoulder. his eyes followed your touch and he sighed, moving your hand to his chest.
• "i-i'm afraid," he'll confess quietly, glancing behind you to make sure nobody was overhearing his moment of worry. "i haven't been feeling well, but i can't just drop everything and leave. not when my career's in the shithole. we've got nothing to return to. this fire god guy needs me, needs us, and i know damn well you'd follow me out if i stepped back from all of this."
• johnny's tragic worry struck a chord in your heart and you couldn't help but agree with his words. you advised him to ask a monk about decongestant tea, or some other simple remedy that would keep you at the academy.
• things died down, or at least, johnny's pain wouldn't be verbalized for a while. you and the boys were actually gaining significant strength and conditioning with the brutal training regime liu kang assigned. when he felt everyone was finally prepared to choose a champion, he assembled a king of the hill type of tournament on campus grounds.
• you stood between johnny and kenshi, a palpable tension on your husband's shoulders. his jaw was clenched tight, as were his fists. he looked... terrified. this wasn't a normal expression for the star.
• "johnny?" you whisper to him, reaching down to intertwine your fingers with his. before you could fully articulate your concerns, he speaks up.
• "i don't feel well," he murmurs in return, eyes fixated at the platform in front of you all. he visibly pales.
• liu kang calls you to the platform as the first contestant, and you obediently oblige with a bow, waiting for further instruction. your eyes danced across your potential competitors — raiden and kung lao, the humble farmers. kenshi, the enigmatic swordsman... and your husband, who looked as if he was shitting himself and moments away from puking.
• "you will face (reader), johnny cage."
• "a-are you sure? because that's my spouse, and i'd hate to—"
• liu kang frowns. johnny puts his hands up in a surrender motion, a pathetic attempt at remaining playful, and hoists himself to the platform across from you. his position readies, as does yours.
• though he may be visibly under the weather, the technique is still there. johnny's fighting style is unique and calculate, effortlessly playful and charismatic, just like him. even so, the match becomes quite even as you're familiar with his style. you parry many blows, mirroring others. the crowd is pleased and excited by the potential outcomes.
• you land a good kick to johnny's face, sending him spiraling in the air and landing on his back with a deep thud. the color in his face returns (due to the bruising) as he stares up at you, licking his lips before flourishing his way back up.
• but then, he lets out a strained cry.
• johnny clutches his chest, clawing at the layers of fabric across his body as if they're an anvil sitting atop his torso. his face twists as he doubled over in complete agony.
• "by the elder gods!" liu kang shouts, standing from his spectator chair. others let out their own concerns and shouts, but you're the first one rocketing to his side. you get to his level to inspect his face. you make a desperate attempt to push his damp hair from his face, but his neck snaps the other way as his body tries to expel this sudden onslaught of pain.
• as the fear that a heart attack is imminent, a sudden glow of green burns bright even past johnny's robes. it spills out like an angry cloud, seeping through johnny's fingers as he cries out in the worst pain he'd ever experienced. it is here that liu kang tenses up, then relaxes. he steps to the side, and does nothing but watch blankly. you come closer and part his clothing, giving yourself access to his bare chest to inspect the source.
• shockingly, the problem is... internal. his veins are glowing a bright green shade and when his eyes aren't deeply clenched, you sense a faint trace of emerald in his irises. right where his heart is, is a rhythmic flashing pattern.
• "make it stop!" johnny begs helplessly, and you reply on the verge of tears that you don't know how to help. however, almost as if on cue, he takes a deep breath inward and sits upright, eyes wide and jaw slack. and, just like that, everything seems normal again.
• you run your hand frantically across his bare skin, trying to feel for abnormalities as he catches his breath. you're crying now from the fear, and you catch a glimpse at his watery eyes.
• "are you okay?!" kung lao asks, putting a hand on his back to help him stabilize. "what was that?!"
• "i don't know..." johnny breathlessly replies, reaching a hand up to fix his hair nervously. however, as his hand traveled upward, he noticed the same emerald aura clouding around his hands, and he shouts out and scurries as if he's trying to run away from his own arm. as it's outstretched, it shoots a ball of energy outward, frying a mannequin that sat innocently off to the side. the crowd's eyes go from the mannequin and back to the celebrity. your fists ball up on his back, fistfuls of fabric keeping you upright otherwise you'd fall back from shock.
• "that is not how i anticipated that happening this time," liu kang muttered, coming closer to inspect johnny's palms. johnny stares at his hands like they grew overnight. his eyes shoot to the fire god, incredulous.
• "what the hell do you mean, 'this time?!'"

Fluffbruary, Day 5
February 5: rescue | inertia | lullaby
Dream of the Endless / Hob Gadling
Rated M? Maybe T?
-----
Hob is desperate.
He is out of options. He is no longer a religious man, but he has prayed. His fate is inescapable.
Hob is trapped.
Dr. Atkins will not leave.
He's tried everything to get his new colleague out of his office. He's tried hints. He's tried exclaiming about how much work he has. He's tried ignoring the man and actually doing his work, but he could not focus, and his students deserve better than that. He's stood at the door expectantly, and Atkins stood just outside the door and kept talking. Hob has gone to the toilet, which was extremely awkward, as Atkins followed him in, kept talking, and then followed him back to his office.
Hob could simply leave, but it's his office! His lunch is here! He has 32 exams to mark and 3 lesson plans to finalize, and he is extremely thirsty but he does not want to make tea because he does not want Atkins to consider it an invitation to sit down again. Also, he's afraid that if he just leaves, Atkins will follow him out and all the way home, still talking.
Atkins is currently bemoaning his tragic love life and failed marriages, and Hob bites back a snarl as Atkins once again laments how all of his lovers have taken advantage of him because he is an empath. Clearly, the man is not, or he would already have been knocked flat by the hostility boiling under Hob's properly polite British demeanor. Get out get out GET OUT! he seethes.
Hob longs for assistance, longs for rescue, but the department is deserted, his colleagues' office doors closed, their window blinds down. He knows they're in there, the cowards, but it's obvious that all of them have already been exposed to their new resident bore, and no one warned Hob.
He yearns for a student to stop in, for a fire alarm, for a bloody earthquake, the building's boiler to explode. He glares at his phone, lying silent and dark on his desk. Why won't it ring?
"Music is my first love, though," Atkins says. For at least the fifth time. "And I want someone I can share that with. Concerts are not the same on one's own."
"Mm, yeah," Hob says listlessly.
There are footsteps in the hall. They stop before his door, and Hob's heart leaps like a startled hare.
"Hello, beloved, I am here for our lunch date. You were to call me after your class, were you not?"
God's wounds, thank you, love!
Hob lurches to pull open the half-open door, grabbing Dream's hand with both of his and clinging.
"Hello, darling, so sorry!" He presses a quick kiss to Dream's lips. "Time got away! Come in, come in!"
Pulling Dream into his office, he threads his arm in Dream's and keeps chattering at lightning speed. "Got so busy talking, you know how it is. Love, this is my new colleague, Dr. Atkins. Drew, this is my husband."
"Oh! Ah, pleasure to meet you," Atkins says, eyes wide as he stares at Dream. Every inch the dream king, Dream nods regally. Seeing Atkins take a breath to speak again, Hob jumps in once more.
"So sorry to rush you out, didn't realize what time it was, we've only got time for a short break, you understand. It was lovely chatting with you!"
If he lets Atkins get a word in, the man will never stop, and then Dream will say something unspeakably rude, and the only reason Hob hasn't already been unspeakably rude is that he still has to work with the man.
"Oh sure, no worries, " Atkins says as Hob herds him inelegantly out the door. "Chat later?" he asks over his shoulder.
"Absolutely," Hob says with a cheery grin as he shuts the door in Atkins' face and then locks it.
He slumps against it momentarily and then springs up to tug Dream into a searing kiss.
Dream rumbles in pleasure like a big cat, hands curving around Hob's waist to pull him close.
They only break apart when Hob gasps for breath. "Hello, love," he pants, tucking his face into Dream's neck. "You're my hero, did you know that?"
"Your daydreams of rescue were very loud, but they did not seem to call for a combative response. Is all well, beloved?" He glares at the closed door. "Is Andrew Atkins a threat?"
Hob snorts and reluctantly steps away to walk toward his desk. He has so much to do. "God, no. Only to my peace of mind and my schedule for the day, duck. New colleague, frightful bore, couldn't get rid of him. I tried everything. Nice bloke, but he would not stop talking. If I had to hear one more time about how he saw Queen at Wembley in '85, I would not have been responsible for my actions."
He daydreams a little vignette of sliding his sword out of a desk drawer far too small for it, grinning at Dream's small huff of laughter.
"I am glad to have come, if it averted unnecessary bloodshed," Dream says as he crosses the office. He leans against the corner of Hob's desk, ankles crossed, and smiles down at him. Hob swivels so that his knee knocks Dream's, and smiles back.
There is a brief moment of blessed silence, and Hob savors it.
"As your rescuer, I believe I deserve a reward, do I not?" Dream's voice is a purr, low and sultry, and it sends a shiver down Hob's spine.
"Oh, I will happily reward you tonight, love. Repeatedly, if you like."
"I am here now. For our lunch date. And I find myself ravenous."
"Dream, we're in my office!"
Dream says nothing, simply staring down at him hungrily, and Hob swallows.
"I am so behind, dove. Atkins was here forever, and I have - " It ends on a gasp as Dream straddles him. Hob's desk chair creaks alarmingly.
"So fickle in your gratitude, beloved," Dream murmurs in his ear, his hands in Hob's hair.
Hob glances at his pile of marking. He glances at the blinds, closed, and the door, locked. Ten minutes. He can take ten minutes. Maybe fifteen.

How to Develop a Memorable Antagonist
Tumblr media
Antagonists are one of the most important characters in your book. Without an antagonist, writers wouldn’t have a story to write in the first place. They bring the action, drama, trauma and many other factors that are often the reason for a book’s success. However, their pivotal role in the book is often why antagonists can come across as poorly-written one-dimensional characters.
From stereotypical backstories to a lack of humanisation, authors often make simple mistakes that can result in a cliche or boring antagonist. Are you struggling to create a compelling antagonist for your WIP? Here are some tips to help you get started.
Give Your Antagonist A Clear Motive
People don’t just wake up one day and decide they want to fundamentally alter society and possibly end the world. Or, maybe they do, but their idealogy starts somewhere. Voldemort wanted to change the wizarding world because he loathed muggles due to his parents, Hannibal’s tragic past triggered his cannibalistic tendencies.
Every antagonist has a reason for their crimes, and it's important to understand your antagonist’s motives and goals in order to create a compelling villain. Start with your antagonist’s backstory.
Did they have a tragic childhood? Did they desperately want to achieve a certain goal but failed and were driven insane? Are they following someone? Are they being manipulated? There is an endless list of possible reasons you can choose from in order to create a compelling motive for your antagonist.
Make Your Antagonist Multi-Dimensional
Once you have established their initial reasoning it’s time to go into more detail. I would start by taking their dynamic with the other characters into consideration. Why do they despise the protagonist? Do they want to simply remove the obstacles in their way or do they have a personal vendetta?
It’s also important to consider the other characters. Is there a mentor figure in your book who the antagonist has a personal vendetta against? What about their allies and henchmen? How did they meet them? Did the antagonist start off alone or have they worked with the same group of people since the start?
Your readers don’t necessarily need to know every single detail of your antagonist’s past, but having a clear understanding of their motives and dynamics can help you create a clear image of the antagonist. For example, they could be particularly spiteful towards the protagonist’s best friend because she is the daughter of the antagonist’s ex-ally. This could make for an easy subplot or come in handy if you need to distract the antagonist in a fight scene.
Make Your Readers Empathise With Them
When developing a motive authors should always look for a way to make their readers empathise with the antagonist. Show us why we should feel sorry for them, tell us they could have had a promising future if it weren’t for an unjust moment in their lives. When you make your readers feel conflicted about your antagonist they become more than just a character on the page.
Your readers begin to question whether their tragic past justifies their actions, some might root for them, others might dislike them more and regard them as apathetic. However, the goal is to make your readers view your antagonist as more than just the person causing issues for your protagonist.
Give Them Strengths And Weaknesses
Everyone hates a Mary Sue protagonist, but the same can be said for an antagonist. Think of it this way—if your antagonist is an all-powerful flawless villain who could destroy the world if they wanted to, then why haven’t they already won? Why do they have to fight the protagonist?
The good vs bad, protagonist vs antagonist dynamic only entices readers if they can’t tell who is going to come on top at the end of it all. This is why it’s essential to give your antagonist appropriate strengths and weaknesses.
Here’s an example of an antagonist with appropriate strengths and weaknesses: a main antagonist is an all-powerful witch who wants to destroy the protagonist’s home country but she lost most of her power in a fight against the mentor and can’t gain them back without a special artefact.
This example shows your readers how big of a threat the antagonist is while also providing her with appropriate strengths and shortcomings. This can look a little different depending on the genre you write for. Maybe the antagonist in a romcom wants to get the love interest married off to a side character and has the leverage to do so but the main character is introduced to the love interest’s family to try and sway the antagonist’s plans.
You don’t need to create a comprehensive list of all of your antagonist’s strengths and weaknesses, but it’s important to have a proper understanding of what puts them in a position to easily combat your protagonist and what stops them from outright winning.
Showcase Their (Negative) Impact On The Story
An antagonist can only be labelled as such if they actively do things to hinder or harm the protagonist. Simply saying your antagonist is a bad person isn’t enough, you need to show your readers this too.
When you start reading Harry Potter it is made clear that Voldemort was an all-powerful wizard who severely damaged the wizarding world during the first war, however, his bad deeds aren’t only reserved for the past. He was also just as evil in the present and was out to harm Harry from the first book itself.
From small confrontations with the protagonists to entire fights, it’s important to create a range of situations and chapters that can showcase your antagonist’s ‘true colours’.
Keep Their Personality Consistent
Just like every other character, it is important to ensure you have a consistent personality type for your antagonist. An antagonist regularly spotted in a suit known for their professional and calculative plans wouldn’t casually joke around with the protagonists during a showdown. The way they contradict the protagonist should also be reflective of their personality.
You should also take their personal history into consideration and how that could impact their dynamics with certain characters. For example, a character like Tom Riddle who despised both of his parents would likely be spiteful whenever they see the protagonist with their mentor figure and could even target the mentor out of spite.
The only time an antagonist’s personality should change is during a pivotal point in the book’s plot. Maybe the put-together antagonist shows off their frustrated side when the protagonist outwits them, maybe they let out maniacal laughter when the protagonist asks them about their motives.
It’s important to treat your antagonists like humans and consider how a person with that personality would realistically react to the situations they are in.
Avoid Creating A Stereotypical Antagonist
Nobody likes an overdone cliche. When writing your antagonist try to avoid creating stereotypical villains. Here are a few examples of stereotypical antagonists and how to avoid them:
The Evil Mastermind: Instead of making the antagonist an all-powerful villain with no weaknesses, give them flaws and limitations that can be exploited by the protagonist. Make the antagonist's motives more complex than just wanting to take over the world, and consider giving them a personal connection to the protagonist or a sympathetic backstory.
The Brainwashed Henchman: Rather than having the antagonist control their minions through brainwashing or mind control, make the henchman have agency and free will. Consider making the henchman conflicted about their role, or have them question the antagonist's motives and methods.
The Vengeful Ex-Lover: Instead of making the antagonist a scorned lover seeking revenge, consider giving them a different motivation for their actions. For example, the antagonist might be seeking revenge for a perceived betrayal, or they might be trying to protect someone they care about.
The Unfeeling Machine: Rather than making the antagonist a cold, calculating machine with no emotions, consider giving them a personal stake in the conflict. The antagonist might be acting out of fear or desperation, or they might be struggling with moral dilemmas related to their actions.
The Crazy Cult Leader: Instead of making the antagonist a stereotypical cult leader with a group of brainwashed followers, consider giving them a more nuanced personality. The antagonist might genuinely believe in their cause and be able to convince others to follow them, or they might be struggling with doubts and conflicts within their own ideology.
Avoid ‘One Man Armies’
Let’s be honest, one evil wizard cannot destroy your protagonist’s entire world by themselves. Just like protagonists have mentors, allies, coworkers, friends and sidekicks your antagonists need to have allies too. Voldemort didn’t conquer the entire wizarding world by himself right after graduating from Hogwarts, he instead built his troops and only fought Dumbledore once he was ready.
When worldbuilding for your novel it’s important to create some semblance of character development for background antagonists as well as the lead antagonists.

So,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What a wild ride, everybody.
This tournament went live on July 13th, 3023, and concluded January 1st, 2024. For a long time before, I’d been wondering if I should try my hand at running one of these tournaments, and then I realized we hadn’t had a general tumblr-wide one for tragic characters. I knew that I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but I decided to bite the bullet and take the URL. The rest is history.
I didn’t have a set plan, but I figured I could take 128 entries. And then in less than a week and a half, I had ~122. And honestly, I wasn’t happy continuing with just those I’d gotten so far, and thought it’d be unfair if it closed that quickly without warning, so I decided to up it to 256 with a max 2 characters per canon after preliminaries. Only after that did I go on a mad search to find brackets that were big enough for that, and I’d almost given up before I finally found these:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those are all the characters that made it past prelims and into the competition. Some quite unexpected results came out of these matchups, round after round, and honestly I’d consider the first round to have had the most brutal competitions, because I had tried to do the best I could to match levels of popularity with each other, as far as I could tell. (Yeah, that’s why we had c!Tommy v Jon Sims and Primrose v Jinx.). But even eclipsing all of those, as the weeks went on, we were eventually met with Antigone versus Lloyd Garmadon. Ah, those crazy kids.
At some points it was stressful, in the early rounds when I had dozens of posts, each with edited images and alt text, to prepare for every round, but I never regretted starting this. As of posting, this blog has 2,020 followers and has made over 1,000 posts. This will be the last post on this blog—any future asks I receive I will answer privately back to the asker, or cannot be answered if they are anon—but it will always remain here for posterity. The link below is to the similarly-preserved google sheet compiling every word of every submission this tournament ever received.
I’d like to take this chance to say thank you to everyone who submitted characters, supplied photos, sent in propaganda, reblogged the polls, indoctrinated their teachers into greeklitsweep, and everyone who kept good sportsmanship when their blorbos proved so tragic they couldn’t even win. Thank you to the small group of URLs whom I’ve consistently recognized in my inbox from submissions all the way to finals, thank you for letting me know when a name was messed up, and thank you for your patience in-between rounds. (Shoutout to @elemom as well for having their tiktok on the original antigone/lloyd poll blow up.)
If you’ve stumbled upon this blog weeks, months, or even years after this was posted, I would direct your attention to the tag map in the pinned post to sift through the tumblr history you’ve just uncovered. And I would also be tempted to point at the big sign next to it reciting the nuclear zone warning poem. Lastly, if anyone here or there wishes to talk to me about anything regarding the tournament, you’re welcome to DM @twilight-skies.
There were times when I said to myself this was a one-and-done thing—I was NOT dealing with this again, but….keep a look on the horizon, ya never know.
But until next time, it’s been amazing.
Sayonara you weeaboo shits.

this is going to be my somewhat-brief analysis (buckle in, it's not brief at all) of preluding scenes to farleigh and olivers... scene, lmao. because i can't read micro-expressions and social cues IRL, but i can for movies! also, i want to give my understanding of farleigh's character using the most substantial part of his arc. i disagree so much with a lot of people's takes on farleigh. i needed to talk extensively about it.
[0:58:46] farleigh makes eye contact with a footman. this is one of the footmen that farleigh mentions to felix in a later scene, which i'll also go into. what's interesting about this subtle interaction is how wildly differently you could consider it, depending on how you choose to view farleigh as a character. if you go the "mirror of oliver," route, then this eye contact could be the moment farleigh decides the route he's going to take to confront felix.
on the other hand, the hand that i believe makes more sense, farleigh is genuine in his confrontation with felix. the eye contact he shares with the footman is reciprocated; the footman holds it, even as his body pulls back and his head turns. this gives the idea that they are making a connection. the expression farleigh makes afterwards is also an indication that farleigh isn't plotting or scheming to earn pity points; he feels a connection and comradery with the only other black people at saltburn. when the footman turns away, unneeded anymore (this can be a parallel to farleigh), farleigh glances down, back up, then purses his lips. he looks dejected, in my opinion. this is immediately followed by farleigh's dig at oliver; "i think oliver looks like he'd rather throw himself out of a window.
food for thought.
[0:59:9] elsbeth: you can invite all your friends. farleigh: what friends?
this can obviously be a petty dig. and it is, in some ways. but i think a lot of these petty digs are because farleigh has been here before. he has watched his cousin drag home mediocre and tragic (presumably) white boys for perceived self-benefit. whether felix wants entertainment, wants to quell his guilty conscious (both of which are motivations for his mother), felix seems to have these fleeting possessive relationships with the friends he brings back to saltburn. he could also be queer and deeply repressed, lmfao.
i digress; farleigh is sick and tired. the first thing he says to oliver, before oliver even got to felix, was bitchy as all hell. after that, farleigh had more incentive to belittle oliver; yes, his comments about mannerisms, class, and overall character were petty. they were also all of the qualities that farleigh couldn't afford to have. farleigh is pointing out that oliver has no social life, yet still gets a 200-person party full of people that don't even know his name. this is tragically unfair, at least in farleigh's mind.
[1:01:25] felix: and fucking farleigh, what a little shit stirrer. oliver: well, someone has to entertain us all. felix: ...right. oliver: that's why we love him.
there's a clear disregard of humanity and depth, when felix concedes that farleigh is "entertainment." the sheer fact that felix would immediately believe oliver, a "stranger (as venetia so eloquently puts)" over a close family member, is odd on it's own. there are probably more reasons for distrust; everyone in saltburn is a shit stirrer, and farleigh does put on a particularly good show.
that's intentional, though. farleigh is very intentionally entertainment. otherwise, why would the cattons keep him around? they're welcoming people to their house as family, because they want a break from the reality of soul sucking wealth. because they want entertainment. elsbeth with her friend, who's only real personality traits are being pitiful and visibly different. felix, with his summer pet projects like oliver. farleigh can't be a temporary show; he needs to keep coming back. he needs sir james to support his mother.
[1:02:40] farleigh: i'm not saying my mother isn't completely idiotic when it comes to money. felix: you just have to be firm with her. farleigh: well i can't call her and tell her no! felix: i know, i know, you've said that. i know, i understand. farleigh: no, you don't know! you don't, it's humiliating. felix: it's very hard.
felix's approach to discussing other people's issues--that he does not relate to--makes me giggle sometimes. not that he's malicious or a fumbling idiot, but because of this scene specifically. in just this chunk of dialogue, you have the "i understand" and "you don't understand" conflict. an age old one. a common representation of someone who has never lived a specific struggle yet frames themselves as knowledgeable. felix seems to enjoy the "it's very hard" verbiage. the manner in which he speaks to oliver about his supposed impoverishment and struggles is very similar to the way he speaks to farleigh, in this scene.
i don't know what else to say about this. you can make your own inferences on felix's dialogue, i suppose.
[1:02:50] farleigh: i'm sorry, but it's a bit fucking shitty. you're all throwing oliver a party for 200 people while my mother lives in squalor. felix: well, she's hardly living in squalor, mate. farleigh: well she can't pay her bills so she will be! okay? at the rate she's going, she will be.
GAH. again, this dialogue can be considered in two different ways. farleigh could be hyperbolizing in order to play into the catton savior complex. or he could be completely genuine in his anxiety surrounding his mother's finances. it's very important that you recognize the fact that farleigh isn't arguing about himself, in this situation. he's talking about his mother. later in the conversation, he recenters himself as a person of color. but the original conflict is about whether or not his mom is living comfortably. this arguably affects him, but not entirely. he could continue to maintain his oxford-student-and-saltburn-resident character and continue to frolic around while his mom struggles to make responsible decisions.
[1:03:02] felix: right, well that's exactly why dads concerned about helping her. he doesn't want to enable her. he wants her to learn how to stand on her own two feet. farleigh: yeah, like he does?
and farleigh ate.
[1:03:09] farleigh: i mean, you know how this looks, right? making me come to you with a begging bowl. felix: what are you implying? farleigh: i think you know what i'm implying, felix. why don't you ask liam and joshua? felix: who... who the fuck are liam and joshua!? farleigh: ...your footmen.
farleigh's mannerisms in this portion of the scene GAG me. the easy confidence, the self-assured and confrontational attitude. the cocky wave of his shoulders and tilt of his head. he smirks, scoffs, makes and holds eye contact as emphasis to what he is accusing. the way he says "i think you know what i'm implying" even though i'm not quite sure if felix did. this really hammers in the implicit nature of the cattons' treatment of farleigh.
[1:03:33] felix: oh, oh. that is... that is low, farleigh. farleigh: okay. felix: jesus christ, mate! seriously, is that where you wanna take this!? farleigh: right. felix: make it a race thing!? what the fuck! i mean, we're your family, we hardly even notice that you're... different, or anything like that! farleigh: mmm. felix: i never know our footmen's names!
GAGGED. i eat up this scene and lick my fingers. "wohohoho, i don't see color! i can't believe you'd make it a race thing!" i know i should cut felix some slack, but this is just a little too real. although i've cut farleigh some slack for his classism.
the complete change in farleigh's mannerisms from the previous timestamp to this one is EDIBLE. i can't cope with it. his smile as felix says "that is low" is so painfully real. it says "i've been here before and maybe i was expecting this." for a second, felix is almost entertainingly cliche. then the exasperation hits. farleigh just looks tired. he blinks rapidly, smooths over his eyebrow with his hand, vocalizes his disbelief in felix's denial. "we hardly even notice you're different," to which farleigh crosses his arms (defensive), raises his eyebrows, nods along.
i won't include the final few lines of this conversation cuz i'm blabbing FAR too much, but farleigh's expressions of absolutely exhaustion and disappointment as felix says they've "been more generous then most"... i'm so sick. it doesn't matter what other families would do, because this family passes out charity like it's their favorite pastime. farleigh is your best american girl.
oliver, overhearing this conversation, immediately knows what his next plan of action is. compare himself to farleigh. and really, it's funny, because oliver misses the obvious differences between him and farleigh. just like everyone else. he will never feel different, not in the same way farleigh does. not with farleigh's relationship to the cattons, the legacy of his parents, and his blackness.
[1:06:32] (godfather's karaoke scene, AKA apple bottom jeans. he's a disgusting manchild and he throws his jacket at his wife.) is it odd to point out that another one of the only visible black characters is being degraded/mistreated/disregarded? not crazy, right? especially following the conversation about bias two scenes ago.
[1:07:02] farleigh: y'know, i think i'd fuck richard the III. he's so insecure, so you'd know he'd put in the work, right? oliver: or you could just fuck me, right?
here, i think there's a level of projection that farleigh is using in his line about insecurity. not only is it made known that farleigh uses sex as a tool (with teachers, specifically), but it's also made known that farleigh believes/knows that he is treated differently due to his race and/or family history. oliver seems to have clocked this, considering he relates himself to richard the III, then tells farleigh they have similar experiences.
[1:07:34] oliver: y'know, if you ever wanna talk to anyone, you can talk to me, farleigh. farleigh: ...what do you mean? oliver: well, i know you're going through a hard time at home. i know how that feels, when things are so precarious. it's terrifying... and lonely. and it must be so fucking weird, having to ask them for everything. and i know you fucking hate me. farleigh: i... i don't hate you. oliver: but... if you ever wanted me to talk to them, to see if there's... if i can help in any way... just ask. farleigh: ...okay.
i love this movie. have i said that yet? i bet you definitely couldn't tell by this post. this conversation is so... there's so much to talk about.
i'll start with some of my favorite of farleigh's mannerisms/expressions. when oliver first cuts their... tensions with "you can talk to me," farleigh pulls back slightly, sits up slightly, looks across oliver's face. there's a level of shock to it, but. farleigh was comfortable with oliver, his sworn enemy, flirting with him. yet, he pulled back at a genuine offer of support. some see this as farleigh always wanting oliver sexually, but i think it's more nuanced than that. when oliver says "terrifying... and lonely" that's when the camera cuts back to farleigh. he previously wore a half-smile that is now dropping; "lonely" was the hardest word to swallow. his lip is quivering. he looks up in an almost-eye roll when he says, "i don't hate you." he's laughing when oliver finishes, like he finds it all funny, yet the way he says "okay" makes him seem genuine. however... clearly not, considering the next portion of this scene!
even though oliver is lying out of his ass, everything he's saying is a description of farleigh. people grossly misunderstand farleigh's character, even when it's laid onto a banquette sized table through this portion of the movie. he's insecure, desperate, terrified, unsure, and lonely. farleigh, with so many friends and so many scandalous choices, is so fucking lonely. he knows he doesn't belong here, so he jams his ill-fitting puzzle piece into the saltburn jigsaw and crosses his fingers.
he tells oliver he doesn't hate him, and he looks like he's struggling to spit it out. he looks up towards the ceiling, closes his eyes like he's gathering himself. again, people take this as a bonding moment. the next portion of the scene contradicts this. honestly, i'm not completely sure, either. i think he's honest when he says he doesn't hate oliver. so, what? he's jealous, definitely. he wants to hold the same power as oliver, a foreign entity with somehow so much more privilege than farleigh. maybe that bred a certain kind of infatuation; the need to emulate what you'll never be. of course, he sees himself in the boys felix brings home; they, just like farleigh, need or want something from the cattons (although i object to the idea that farleigh is somehow "a mirror" of oliver). do what you will with this word vomit, i don't know where i'm going here.
and OH MY GOD "if you ever wanted me to talk to them, to see if there's... if i can help in any way," is diabolical. so terribly diabolical. the sheer idea that oliver knows, is pummeling it into farleigh's face, that he has authority over farleigh's life like that? that he knew felix for six months and he can somehow "talk to" farleigh's family about treating farleigh better... vomit inducing. farleigh is actually your best american girl.
[1:09:39] (karaoke scene) elsbeth, so uncomfortable with the idea that oliver is using them. i suppose that's the manner of wealthy people; they don't want to believe that they're only good for their money. but... they did that to themselves, in a way. they enjoy the pet projects, the charity work, the ego boost that comes with inviting the "lesser" to saltburn. hanjob on a haybale, golden big boy summer, right? everyone in the room is scandalized. farleigh is having the time of his fucking life. yet, here's the kicker,
[1:10:10] oliver: this is your song too, farleigh. come finish it. farleigh: only if you insist!
and then farleigh gives the performance of his life, by the way. people died. but... nobody is uncomfortable. literally no one. no one shudders or gasps at the scandal of oliver saying "this is your song, too" over the karaoke microphone; everyone heard. nobody cares. they all know. they start clapping farleigh on, cheering. elsbeth relaxes back onto her bed of cushions, because farleigh is entertaining. the change in mood is soooo... interesting.
[1:10:45] curse this scene, i don't even want to talk about it. it was hot, oliver and farleigh are so homoerotic, whatever yadayada. just like every other sexual scene in this movie, it is riddled with a suffocating kind of uncomfortable tension. we are made intimate third-party witnesses to carnal, sinful, emotionally ambiguous scenes. when i pointed out farleigh seemed more comfortable with flirting then comfort, when i said farleigh uses sex as a tool, when i said farleigh was projecting with "he's so insecure, so you know he'd put in the work." i just overthink. but any person that has sexual relationships with teachers needs intensive therapy and that cannot be denied. however, it's oliver, that uses sex as a tool throughout this movie. another uncomfortable parallel between the two characters.
something about farleigh's expression throughout this scene is... kind of hurtful. the way the moonlight just barely illuminates the light in his eyes, whereas any detail of oliver's face is shrouded in darkness. it make's farleigh look young, innocent, real. (sidenote, as i'm watching, i have to mention this. the way farleigh says that second "no" is so funny. "...no...?" LMFAO). man, i don't even know what to say, past this. the whole dominant dynamic, farleigh saying "i'm going to behave" is a little too painful considering the context leading up to this scene. it's freaky. it's so very oliver.
this is way too long but i could make so many more connections with their final confrontation at oliver's birthday party. i'm drowning in thoughts. what i really wanted to highlight was how ambiguous farleigh's character is, and how differently a lot of his scenes can be perceived. i've decided that farleigh is a sympathetic character, similar to oliver but so much less powerful. some people hate farleigh! so. there's that. the end! thanks to anyone who read this whole thing!

Tommy
🌿 Naively, and in your rush of excitement at having discovered your childhood friend survived the war, you tell Tommy about your old friend.
🌿There is also a little part of you that wants to test the waters, to perhaps force the sometimes cold Tommy Shelby into showing you more affection by showing him that you have potential other options...
🌿This is of course a big mistake, huge. If you weren't aware quite how obsessive and possessive your Tommy is over you then it's only because he's been trying very hard to keep his darkness hidden. He didn't want to scare you off, not too soon.
🌿 But now you've spent almost every evening this week "catching up" with your old childhood friend and Tommy's head is spinning with paranoid thoughts he just can't ignore or swallow down any longer.
🌿 But he's far too smart to lash out, too smart to take his paranoia out on you... he knows why you're doing it. He knows you're trying to make him jealous and to him that's a very good thing indeed because if you're trying to make him jealous that means you want him. It means you'd still choose him over your old friend in a heartbeat...
🌿 Still, best to make sure you never have to make that choice.
🌿 He definitely spies on you. Ever since you met Tommy you've felt as though you're never quite completely alone. Even at night when you're asleep in your bed. You always feel as though someone's watching you. You've always convinced yourself it's Tommy "watching over you" like your guardian angel. Now however the feeling has intensified. Ever since you mentioned your friend you've felt almost claustrophobic whenever you've been out with your childhood friend.
🌿 and that's because you've never once been alone with your childhood friend. Tommy's always been somewhere near by, keeping tabs on you. He would tell you it was for your own protection, would tell you it was because he couldn't live with himself if something happened to you because he wasn't there for you...
🌿 But if that's true its only half the story. The main reason he's been following your childhood friend is to try and deduce this mans motive. Tommy is deeply suspicious, no man would ever spend this much time with a woman he didn't have intentions on... Tommy is absolutely convinced that your childhood friend wants to be more than friends.
🌿 He gets so quietly angry about this, he feels deeply wounded inside that the world would deal him this potential betrayal, but if the devil works hard, Tommy Shelby works harder...
🌿 He considers killing your friend in cold blood. Decides this would be too messy, too risky... It would break your heart and you'd certainly hate and fear Tommy more than he could stand... Then he considers the many different "tragic accidents" that could wipe your childhood friend off the face of this earth... A sudden and untimely death however could potentially seal this old friend inside your heart forever, perhaps not all of your heart, but a part of it could end up devoted to the memory of what could have been. It could leave you questioning your whole life, could mean you drift away from Tommy in your heartbreak instead of closer to him... And even if you didn't drift away, even if you came back to him twice as devoted and adoring as before, he could never be quite sure that you weren't still thinking fondly of your untainted childhood friend who came back for a moment from the war.
🌿 No, the only thing that will settle Tommy's crazed mind is to hear you say you hate your friend, to see the betrayal in your eyes, to see you realise that the only person you can trust is Tommy. The only person in the world it's safe to put your heart into is Tommy.
🌿 So rather than kill your friend himself or see him taken care of another way, Tommy sets about devising an intricate plot, which plays out like his own personally constructed soap opera.
🌿 First he plants the seeds of doubt, rumours which spread through the market and around the pubs, about the long lost soldier who has recently returned from the dead, about the atrocities he committed during the war... The people he killed - not just the enemy but women, children... The violent and sadistic things he did to the women unfortunate enough to cross his cursed path.
🌿 Then he starts leaving you alone with your friend, that claustrophobic feeling disappears but you don't feel relieved. You feel scared. You feel increasingly nervous in the presence of your friend who's every intimate move - a hand on your hand perhaps - feels like a warning, like a threat...
🌿 Then Tommy escalates things, the rumours get more detailed, he goes, worried, to one of your friends, tells her he's heard all these terrible things about your friend, that you've spent so much time with this dark stranger and he's worried about your safety... He'd tell her that he's scared to talk to you about it himself because he doesn't want to come off the way some men do... Paranoid and possessive. He respects your freedom...
🌿 So it's your friend who begs you not to spend anymore time with your old friend, and when she retells of all Tommy's fears your heart is not only touched that your man cares so much, but so so relieved because for days now you've been nothing but desperate for someone to save you from your friend, because the rumours have finally gotten to your head and you're convinced that your friend is going to do something terrible one of these days.
🌿 Your running back to Tommy however isn't quite enough to reassure him. He also goads your friend into attacking him, somewhere in public so that everyone sees the insane act of paranoid violence against him. Your childhood friend is dragged practically foaming at the mouth away from Tommy, shouting about how Tommy wants to hurt you, how Tommy is insane, evil in fact.
🌿 Tommy has to fight to keep the smirk off his face as he watches your friend dragged out of the Garrison and thrown in all him shame out into the street.
🌿 All the while youre clinging onto Tommy, your arms thrown around him, tears in your eyes because you could have lost him.
Alfie
🐻 Before Alfie ever actually spoke to you himself he researched you thoroughly. It took him a couple of weeks to trace your family tree, know your life story, even the intricate details and the secrets you believed yourself to be taking to the grave.
🐻 And so he knows about your childhood best friend. Actually he knows everything about the man who used to walk you to and from school every morning like a nauseating little lap dog...
🐻 Only one person's ever doted on you more than that lad and it's Alfie... so when he hears you mention the name of this old friend he feels sick.
🐻 This man is younger than Alfie, he's softer, better looking than Alfie, healthier than Alfie, he's been in your life so much longer than Alfie...
🐻 And because Alfie feels threatened as he does by this old friend, that darkness he's always trying to hide from you, takes over, like storm clouds passing over slowly. His paranoia and his need to possess you completely spreads it's roots even deeper inside him until he can't ignore the feverous certainty that you are in grave danger...
🐻 In Alfie's mind he is the only man who can protect you from the evils of the world, he genuinely believes that if you leave his side you will die, that something terrible and tragic will happen to you, a grave curse only he can save you from.
🐻 And this old friend could end up being the reason you leave him, therefore this old friend, as far as Alfie is concerned, is going to kill you.
🐻And Alfie only has one way of dealing with people who threaten his little ziskeit...
🐻 However Alfie knows that if he kills him in front of you you'll be devastated, maybe even sympathetic to this undeserving intruder, so he devises a plot to get the three of you together...
🐻 Alfie uses his men from the bakery to spread word around Camden that he's looking for a wanted man, your childhood friend because this lowlife outsider has designs on Alfie's girl... Let's the whole town know exactly what he wants to do to this cunt when he gets his hands on him...
🐻 He's trying to lure your friend out, trying to scare your friend in exactly the right way - because he knows your old friend better than you do and he knows exactly how to goad him into a fight... A fight he just won't win.
🐻 Alfie makes sure that when the confrontation happens you're there with him, that when your friend sees Alfie and immediately bites, crazed by his fear of the gangster and the rumours he's heard, you are there to witness everything which goes down.
🐻 And it all plays out exactly as Alfie planned... Alfie ever calm and apparently innocent, your childhood friend practically rabid, violent and threatening in his panic.
🐻 So certain that the situation is kill or be killed your childhood friend will race to draw a weapon first, previously a pacifist your friend had bought a gun to protect himself when he heard what Alfie was planning...
🐻 So he draws his weapon, terrifying you... You scream, grasping for his arm begging him not to shoot Alfie... Alfie remains calm, "Now what on earths possessed you to get that out eh?"
🐻 "You!" Your friend is practically panting, his adrenaline shaking his whole body, there's tears in his eyes... It's the most pathetic sight Alfie's ever seen. You're still petrified that something awful is going to happen, you know Alfie doesn't take threats lightly so you're begging your friend to put the gun away, begging Alfie not to react...
🐻 Your friend starts growling and stuttering out his words, "I know what you want! I know what you're here for! I ain't goin down without a fight... I'm a fuckin man aren't I..."
🐻 "A fight?" Gasps Alfie, "you think I wanna fight you? Sunshine I don't even fuckin know you..."
🐻 "You think I want y/n, you think I'm gonna steal her away..." he carries on but Alfie just shakes his head and tells you to stop crying, that everything's going to be alright, that your friend isn't going to do anything... "Are you mate?"
🐻 Your friends arm is shaking as he continues holding the gun out threatening Alfie... And Alfie wants nothing more than to put a bullet through the stupid cunts face but he knows that in the long run, patience and mercy will be worth the sacrifice of blood thirsty satisfaction.
🐻 "Now listen here mate, I don't know whats possessin you right, some malady or demonic force I imagine yeah, but I promise you right, hand on heart that I don't know you yeah... But clearly right, clearly you are a friend of my dear y/n right, and as you can see your gun yeah, and well you as a matter of fact, are fuckin terrifyin her ain't you... My poor girls sobbing her heart out because of you right and I don't like that, I'm sure you don't like it either do you mate... So, why don't you put the gun down yeah, take a couple deep breaths yeah..."
🐻 But your friends heard about Alfie's double crossing ways and this apparent kindness only spooks him more, now he's more convinced than ever that Alfie is going to kill him... In his desperation he shoves you forward towards Alfie so that you go stumbling into him, if it wasn't for Alfie catching you you'd have fallen to the ground in a heap...
🐻 But Alfie wraps an arm around you protectively, tucks you under his coat and soothes you gently. All the while your friend is denouncing you as his friend, "I don't want her Alfie I promise, whatever you've heard it ain't true she don't mean anything to me, nothin I promise..."
🐻 hearing all this breaks your heart, you're sobbing into Alfie's shirt whilst Alfie reassures you not to listen to your friend, that he's clearly having some kind of episode, that no one in their right mind would say those things about you, especially not to him.
🐻 And then Alfie does what no one would expect him to, he shows the man mercy. "Now like I said yeah, you are clearly very dear to my y/n and I can see yeah that you are clearly experiencing high levels of severe distress so, I'm gonna forgive you yeah, as long as you put that gun away now and stop waving it at me and my y/n, I'm gonna forgive you for threatening me just now, for wanting to kill me right... And I don't know what you've heard about me mate but I reckon you know forgiveness ain't usually my strong point so... Id put that gun away now if I were you and I'd say thank you too..."
🐻 When your friend flees Alfie is left to do exactly what he'd hoped, to pick up the pieces of your broken heart, to soothe and comfort you, he takes you home, holds you in his arms all night and reassures you over and over that he will always care about, always treasure and love you...
🐻 in a few months time your old friend will have been found to have killed himself, and although you'll be heartbroken, Alfie will be there to comfort you and ultimately his plan will succeed because you'll be driven closer to him, more dependent on him than ever.
Arthur
🍂 You know about Arthur's temper and you know he can be a little quick to jump to conclusions so, when your old friend comes back to Birmingham you know to keep your meetings to yourself.
🍂 You don't want to make Arthur jealous because you know he's already jealous of every man who so much as looks at you...
🍂 But it's impossible to keep secrets from Arthur without keeping them from everyone else too and in Small Heath it's impossible for a Blinder's girl to go anywhere without being seen by every man and his bloody dog... the women at the market gossip and every house has eyes always watching you... and absolutely no one in Small Heath would be stupid enough to keep a secret from Arthur.
🍂 So it doesn't take long for him to find out. A young blinder tells him that he's seen you out walking with a stranger, a man around your age that they don't recognise...
🍂 Arthur will be a deadly combination of humiliated (because a young, practically nothing blinder has delivered news of his girls betrayal) confused (because he thought you only had eyes for him, thought you were in love, that you needed him) and angry, with you, with himself and with the stranger..
🍂 He'd grab the young lad by the scruff of his shirt, already beginning to lose his mind "Where, where the fuck did you see her? You're fuckin wrong she wouldn't do that to me!"
🍂 He'd want desperately to deny the fact, want madly for it all to be a misunderstanding but he isn't trusting and he knows deep in his heart that this stranger is trying to steal you away from him. That he has to get rid of him before it's too late...
🍂 He's so hurt too, deeply wounded because he very easily believes that you've betrayed him, that you're plotting to run away from him, that all this time you've been lying to him, that you've made a fool of him, that you think he's a useless idiot...
🍂 And of course none of it is really true. The stranger is just an old friend you wanted to catch up with, he's nothing to you and doesn't compare to your Arthur in the slightest... That's why you hadn't bothered to mention your meeting to Arthur, because you didn't want him to end up wound up over something that means nothing...
🍂 When Arthur finds out where you are there's no stopping him. He storms through town, his head spinning with wild jealous thoughts. By the time he gets to you he's red in the face, veins bulging in his temple, he can barely see for the red he's seeing. He's shaking with rage...
🍂 And he walks into the little cafe on the river bank at the wrong moment, just in time to see your friend reach to take your hand. Now if he'd waited just a moment longer Arthur would have seen you remove their hand from yours, would have seen you smile politely and reject their advances.
🍂 But he didn't wait, instead propelling himself forward at such a pace that the force with which he knocked into your friend was enough to topple the chair he was sitting in and send the two tumbling to the floor in a wild heap, a tangle of arms and legs as Arthur begins to beat the life out of your friend.
🍂 He's like a wild animal, his brain a haze of red, completely out of control. He barely even knows what he's doing himself, only that he can't stop. Only that he doesn't want to stop.
🍂 Your friends long dead when Arthur is dragged off him by his brothers who just didn't get their in time. You're on the floor at your friends side, sobbing your heart out, and when John comes to your side, his hand on your back to try and soothe you he realises you've slipped into a strange state of shock. Only half there as you stand with him and let him take you home.
🍂 When Arthur realises what he's done he's devastate, not exactly for having murdered your friend but for having lost control in front of you the way that he did. You're terrified of him now, his brothers keep telling him to leave you for a little while, to give you time to understand what happened, to grieve, but Arthur can't leave you alone...
🍂 He keeps knocking on your door begging you to let him in and in the end you do, not because you're ready to forgive him but because despite everything you still care about him, he's just a human after all, and you know he means it when he says he's nothing left to live for if you won't see him. That if you don't let him in he'll throw himself in the cut like his mother.
🍂 So you let him in and when you see what a state he's in, how hollowed out he looks, how ghostly and unwell he appears your heart breaks for him. When it comes to Arthur you've always stuck around because you were sure you could fix him, that all he really needs is a gentle woman who he can trust, who can show him forgiveness. You know you'd be letting yourself down, betraying yourself if you refused him now.
🍂 So despite everything you devote yourself to him even more. You won't make the mistake of keeping secrets from him again.
John
🌼 You and John have been friends since you were children and he's always been proud of that. Of being the man who's known you the longest, who knows you best. You grew up together, it was always you and him against the room...
🌼 Except this isn't exactly true, John's edited the truth, warped his memories to suit his delusions and your childhood as you rember it is a little different. You were a popular girl, popular with the boys too and John was not your only friend, you had another. One you thought had died in the war, one who, when you find out is still alive, you're giddy with happiness.
🌼 You tell John, elated as you are, expecting him to be happy too, expecting him to be just as thrilled as you are but when you tell him the smile he offers you doesn't reach his eyes and you're confused.
🌼See there's a reason you believed your friend to be dead and that reason is John. Its just one of many little "white" lies he's told you over the years to keep you from thinking of anyone but him.
🌼 So John's quietly furious you've discovered that your friend is alive, he'd always known this old friend was a threat, he's resented him since childhood because he's always been "in the way" and just when John thought things were finally going along roses with you and him this friend has returned to drive a wedge between the two of you once again.
🌼 John knows what he should do, he should be outwardly happy, he should be happy that you're happy and he should be behaving as though he too is over the moon to find the friend he thought dead is really still living. He should be looking forward to the inevitable reunion.
🌼But he isn't, he's absolutely dreading it, every time he thinks of the prospect of watching you throw your arms around your old friend he starts dry heaving, a deep and crazed panic gripping him. Dark John is deeply insecure and he knows that good girls like you don't stay with evil men like him, men who will ultimately destroy you...
🌼 But he won't let you go and as the day draws nearer and nearer that the two of you will be reunited with your old childhood friend John's thoughts grow darker and darker, ever despairing. The dream world he constructed for the two of you, in which it had only ever been him and you, together until the end, the only two people in the world, this world is falling apart piece by piece. His whole reality, warped as it may have been is being threatened and he feels himself coming apart at the seems.
🌼All those false memories he constructed, the time He rescued you from those bullies in the school playground, the day he taught you how to skim pebbles... he's being forced to remember the true memories, the memories in which that old friend got inbetween you, taking the stone from John's hand to show you how to do it right, pulling John from the fight to play the chivalrous pacifist...
🌼 John can hardly sleep, he feels like half of himself has been ripped from the other and he can't stand the pain...
🌼 So he goes crazy and one day you come home from town to find him waiting for you at the kitchen table, his gun in his hands. When he points it at you, tells you he can't live to lose you, can't let you love anyone else, you don't know what to do...
🌼 You're stunned, you'd never expected him to be this kind of despairing, this kind of heartbroken but you can see in his bloodshot teary eyes that he means it and you're really not sure you're going to live to see another sunrise...
Bonnie
🍀Bonnie's whole world revolves around you, you are the reason he gets up in the morning and the reason he sleeps comfortably every night. He adores you and it's been this way ever since he first laid eyes on you. He's planned his whole life around you and every night he lies in bed imagining your future together. All the children he's going to give you, your wedding day, how he's going to be the most devoted husband...
🍀Nothing else in the world has ever given him more joy or hope... you're even the reason he wants to be a successful boxer, why he's so determined to be the champion of the world one day... not just to impress you but to ensure he's able to dote on you the way you deserve
🍀But, because he's so completely devoted to you, his obsession with you leads to some pretty deep insecurities... he's terrified of losing you, terrified that you won't want him, won't see him as good enough...
🍀So when a new family joins your travelling convoy and Bonnie finds that you and one lad from this new family go back years, longer than you and Bonnie, his heart breaks.
🍀He immediately assumes that this is the end of your relationship, that if you don't already you're going to end up loving this boy more than you love Bonnie...
🍀He doesn't stick around to watch your reunion, he takes himself off on his own, into the woods so that he can cry his eyes out angry, heartbroken tears with no one to hear him. He knows he can't let you or anyone else see how upset he is because he knows it looks pathetic.
🍀It isn't actually in Bonnie's nature to be manipulative in the way someone like Tommy or Alfie is manipulative, he just isn't as clever, doesn't think so complexly about things... So Bonnie is at a total loss for what to do. He feels hopeless...
🍀But he knows he can't lose you, he knows that he won't be able to live with himself if he loses you, won't be able to live without you...
🍀So he returns from the woods once he's calmed down, presents you with a gift, a beautifully carved pendant which Bonnie made whilst he was away, he's stained the back of the charm with blood from the palm of his hand, "so that you'll always have a part of me with you..." You think it's a little intense but that's what your Bonnie is like, when he locks eyes with you you can see how deep his emotions run, how wildly his feelings rage inside him. That's why you love him, because he's vulnerable, because he's honest... Because no one's ever loved you so dramatically before.
🍀He feels better when he sees that you wear your pendant all the time, when you tell him that you even sleep in it... But this doesn't stop his jealousy and insecurity niggling away at his sanity... He can't hide how it upsets him when you choose to spend your day with your old friend and not with Bonnie
🍀He feels like you're slipping away from him, feels like he's being forced to share you and he doesn't like it. He gets teary eyed whenever you tell him you've been out with your friend, he struggles to swallow around the lump in his throat whenever he sees you laughing at one of your friends jokes. This is the most painful experience of Bonnie's life and he'd rather get knocked down in the ring every day for the rest of his life than have to watch you twirling your hair round your finger whilst you talk with this other friend...
🍀This makes him so much more possessive over you, he's constantly glued to you, always showering you in affection, always holding your hand or pulling you into his lap. He makes a show of picking you up and carrying you off when he thinks you've spent enough time talking to your friend. Definitely likes to snog you in front of your friend just to prove to himself that you're still his.
🍀Starts to fixate on getting rid of your old friend, instead of imagining that peaceful and happy future with you he now imagines tragic accidents which your friend could suffer, he imagines your friends family being driven away by some outside force
🍀 Bonnie wants your old friend gone but he doesn't want to do it himself, for now he manages to convince himself that his obsession with you is nothing unusual, that he's still completely sane... He knows that if he starts letting his mind wander towards thoughts of murder he might never come back from the dark, might lose himself to his obsession and lose you in the process.
🍀He will constantly be reminding you that it's "you an me against the world little dove," "can't trust nobody else, you and me against the world now and to the end of our days..."
🍀He has so much pent up anger that he's trying to swallow down, so much hatred and resentment for this intruder, that it's beginning to effect his fights... He can't concentrate anymore once he's in the ring, the hatred takes over and he sees red, he can't throw fights properly anymore because he's lost control. This starts to piss Tommy and Arthur off... Which leads to questions...
🍀Which leads to a strained but emotional confession, when he tries to pass it off as nothing, "some stupid bastards been gettin too close to my lass..." he receives some flippant advice which Bonnie takes a little too literally. "Well y'know what y'need to do then lad... Knock her up, put a ring on her finger so she ain't goin nowhere..."
🍀 Which is what he becomes determined to do... Brace yourself for some deeply passionate breeding because Bonnie isn't going to stop until he's given you more children than you can count on your hand.
🍀Ironically this is what you've wanted the whole time, your old childhood friend is nothing in comparison to Bonnie and you can't even begin to understand why Bonnie feels threatened. You're actually always trying to reassure him of this, always telling him how much you love him, there's just something about Bonnie though, he doesn't seem satisfied until he's buried inside you, you clinging onto him for dear life.
Isaiah
🐀Isaiah hates your friend from the second he's introduced to him. He doesn't like the way your friend looks at him, he doesn't like the way your friend looks at you, or the way he talks to you, or the way he dances with you... Isaiah hates everything about him and he makes no secret of that because he doesn't play the long game. Doesn't think about the consequences of his actions.
🐀He's so rude to this man, only ever gives him short disinterested answers in conversation, ignores him 90% of the time, pretends not to see him and accidentally bumps into him spilling some of his drink on your friends shirt.
🐀He's playing the intimidation game from the get go and is hellbent on making your friend feel as unwelcome and as uncomfortable as possible.
🐀 Whenever you get particularly upset about Isaiah's behaviour and question it he always has an answer for you. "Know you're too sweet to see it mousy but that friend of yours ain't really a friend... I know right cause I know how men think, I know what he really wants from you my pretty girl and it's disgusting..."
🐀 "Why does it matter, I don't want those things from him... I'm not interested like that... Obviously, and he knows that I'm with you, so he won't..." "That don't stop men like him darlin, you've gotta be careful, s'alright I'll make sure you're never left alone with him..."
🐀 And he keeps that promise devotionally. From the day that old friend turns up in town Isaiah is by your side constantly, you're never alone, your friend never really has an opportunity to talk to you or spend real time with you, not without Isaiah lurking like a raincloud near by, warning your friend off silently.
🐀"Fuckin hate that smug cunt bastard..." Is what Isaiah says to Michael the night your old childhood friend walks into the Garrison. Isaiah actually can't believe he's been stupid enough to come round here without you... but he has and Isaiah is more than pleased to finally have an opportunity to show the stupid prick how he really feels about him...
🐀 He's practically electric with excitement as he strolls up to the bar, stopping just behind your old friend, barely saying a word to the unsuspecting prick with the stupid fucking grin on his face before landing a sharp blow to his eye.
🐀 And once he's started it feels so good he doesn't want to stop...
🐀 And he doesn't kill him, he does something some would say is much worse... When his brain finally clears a little, just enough to start thinking about what he's doing he realises that the whole attack could earn your friend a whole lot of sympathy from you so
🐀 He stops, and just when your friends let out a sigh of relief Isaiah takes his peaky cap from his cap, takes the blade out and uses it, not to blind him but to castrate the man and cut his cock off. It's a bloody scene and Isaiah is only glad you aren't here to witness the mess he's made, but he knows that emasculating the bastard was the only way to stop you from ever falling for his charm. Isaiahs happy he's made him ugly enough that to look at him will give you nightmares.
🐀 Now after an experience like that your friend doesn't stick around, he leaves town as soon as he can, and he leaves town too humiliated to explain his departure to you...
🐀and you hear things through the rumour mill about what really happened that night at the Garrison but you can't bring yourself tj believe it. Not when Isaiah has always been so charming and good to you, so sweet...
🐀 And of course after the incident Isaiah made much more of an effort to layer the tenderness and affection on thick with you, he's been ever so sweet, spent so much time with you, hardly ever lets you out of his sight, or reach...
🐀 And you don't really want to ask him if it's true, it would feel cruel, asking someone as loving and sweet as Isaiah if he butchered someone and left them for dead... So you're always left wondering, a tiny doubt in your mind always questioning what really happened to your friend.
🐀But Isaiah knows what happened to him because he had Bonnie trail him for several weeks to find out exactly where he fled to, to threaten him once more so that he'd stay quiet. Isaiah doesn't need the police turning up on your door, and he certainly doesn't need your friend ever returning... Not that he'll last long if he does.
Michael
☘️ Doesnt think twice, he has your friend killed the very day that you first mention him.
☘️Michael isn't going to take risks, not when it comes to you and although he knows he's rich enough, good looking enough to keep you happy, he's always worried that someone else might catch your eye...
☘️ And an old childhood friend, someone who's got all that history with you, someone you knew before you knew Michael, someone who could remind you what life before Michael and all his rules, all his possessive demands and paranoia was like, well... Michael can't risk anyone breaking the harmony you live in because he understands what a fine balance it is...
☘️ So, when you show him a letter from your friend at breakfast Michael begins making plans. He memorises the address on the letter and goes off to work having given you a deeper, more passionate kiss than usual. He also lies to you about how he needs you to stay home today, to keep yourself hidden inside the house where it's safe because there's something dangerous going on with Tommy and his cousins that he's worried you'll get wrapped up in...
☘️ And because he has you wrapped around his little finger you believe him, you do exactly as he says, you close all the curtains and keep yourself hidden away from the world for the day, locked up in your house exactly where he wants you to stay. If anyone knocks the door you pretend not to be home... The only person who sees you and you see all day is Michael. Which is the way he would keep things permanently if he could...
☘️ You're worried about him, worried what could be happening to him at work, whether someone threatening him, whether he's going to make it home to you alive, and you're feeling so lucky that you have him, that he's always there working to protect you and keep you safe, so you spend all day baking a delicious apple pie for him when he gets home...
☘️Michael really didn't need to worry about your friend, if he'd asked you not to see him you probably would have done as he told you because he has the wool thick and firm over your eyes, you're as deluded about Michael as he is about you.
☘️When he returns home he's got blood on his shirt and you rush to check him for injuries, ever the doting little lamb, you help bathe him and you help get rid of the shirt which is stained. Michael notices how you even get a little teary eyed when you tell him how you were so worried all day, when you tell him how much you love him.
☘️"Don't know how I'd live you Michael," "You wouldn't love, you know that..."
☘️ You help dress him, kissing his chest as you button his shirt, kissing his neck as you straighten his collar, you're so blindly in love with you and Michael can't help smirk as your lips on his body remind him of the brutal act he committed only hours before. How he stabbed your friend in the heart, how he slit his throat...
☘️But you're blissfully unaware and that night you can't stop gazing lovingly across the table at your hero and protector as he tucks into the pie you baked especially for him.
☘️ But this whole threat has certainly shaken Michael, warned him that there are threats he needs to anticipate in future, things he needs to make sure he doesn't have to worry about...
☘️ So he turns the adoration up a notch, spoils you with even more fancy gifts, pieces of exquisite jewelry, gorgeous silk dresses, lingerie he dresses you up in and calls you all sorts of adoring names, he makes extra time to spend with you...
☘️ And of course he realises that now is the time to propose to you, a gorgeous diamond ring to slip onto your finger and show everyone that you're his now and forever, so that any potential threats are scared away, know that they could never offer you the wealth and luxury that Michael does.
☘️ But you only have eyes for Michael, and he's got you wrapped so tightly round his finger that he's all you ever think about, when you look up at him it's like your brain turns to cotton wool. You're completely devoted to him.
☘️ So when you read about the brutal attack on your old friend, when you read when it happened, you don't even make the connection, don't even remember that that was the very same day you read your letter to Michael, that that was the day Michael came home covered in blood... You're sad about your friend but never once does it occur to you that your great hero could have had anything to do with it.
Sorry these took so long, they were really fun to write though forgot how fun writing insane people is!!!!

I don't think I've ever really spoken in depth about how much I love Lauriam as a character, which is honestly a crime because out of all the Union Leaders I'd probably have to crown him as my number one favorite.
I love Lauriam not only as a character (pink, sibling plotline) but also as an example of how much prequels can recontextualize an entire character. While Ventus is also an example of this, I think we all knew that he probably had some sort of messed up past that landed him in the clutches of Old Man Xehanort. Marluxia, on the other hand, had absolute zero background to infer from his screentime. He was the villain, you're not really meant to think too hard about him and how he became who he is because he sucks and you hate him.
I don't think there were many people chomping at the bit wanting to get info about his past. Like, it would've been cool to get, but I don't think a background for Marluxia was necessary for the story at that point in time. His role was to establish the organization as a threat to Sora and the other guardians, and that was pretty much the extent of it.
And then Union X happened, and Lauriam entered stage right into a tragedy where his fate was already sealed. You look at Lauriam with his polite little smiles and cute little chibi animations and immediately think "what is this man up to" because you are already primed to distrust him on principle due to COM. Did not help his case that he was introduced in the cutscene immediately following the death of Strelitzia, painting a huge target on his back. Fandom reaction was hostile towards him before he was even fully on screen. Occam's Razor, the most obvious answer is the correct one. Lauriam is the obvious suspect because of his actions in the future, so he must be the killer. Literally him just existing in a scene caused more ire to build against him.
But then the Shift Pride cutscene happened. Then it was revealed that Lauriam and Strelitzia -the girl who so many thought he killed- were siblings, and that he was quite worried for her wellbeing, actually.
Every cutscene a clearer picture of who Lauriam is a person was painted, and soon you stopped looking at him with distrust, and it's replaced with the question of "What happened to you?". What happened that caused Lauriam, someone who has been shown to care deeply and immensely about the people he loves, someone who is willing to do anything for those people, become Marluxia? It became increasingly obvious that they were incredibly different people, even though Marluxia came from Lauriam.
And this isn't to say that there was no connection between the two. Lauriam seemed to be incredibly self-confident in his abilities, enough to be pretty steadfast in his resolve to square up with goddamn Maleficent of all people (even if he did get his ass kicked). There's also his very intense anger, as seen in the cutscene where Ventus confesses to being the reason why Strelitzia "vanished", as well as a bit in the scene where he's at Ventus's bedside.
This is all to say that Lauriam was not a necessary addition to the khux cast, he very well could've been swapped with a random new character and the plot probably would've worked fine, all things considered. But because it's Lauriam -the somebody of a character that has already been established to be a prick- it gives his whole plotline a hell of a lot more punch. If it was a new character, people probably wouldn't have been as distrusting of him right of the bat, the sibling plotline would be sweet, but because it's Lauriam and we know how he ends up in the future, it becomes a hell of a lot more tragic. How did the change happen? He's tragic because we know that whatever he does will lead to the outcome of him losing his heart and falling to darkness, something that is essentially the exact antithesis of the keyblade wielder mission statement.
Lauriam is someone who was made to struggle against the destiny that was written out for him with a neat pen and ink, and someone who was doomed to fail in every regard. He could not save his sister, he could not defeat Maleficent, he could not help Ventus, he could not keep his memories when thrown into the future. He couldn't do anything about it.
I realize this is all rounding back around to "the inherent tragedy of prequels" but it's true.
...and yeah that's basically it. I have a lot more thoughts about this guy but I feel like if I write anymore I'm just gonna sound completely incomprehensible bc I'm very tired. Thanks for reading, and don't forget to sparkle on
