A Surprise at the Café

Paring: Benoftheweek (Youtuber) x Reader (Mainly Female)

Summary: One special day at your favourite coffee shop fate brings you closer to someone you couldn't imagine meeting

After a grueling day of college classes, I sought solace in the familiar routine of grabbing a warm drink from the nearby coffee shop. As I waited for my latte, I pulled out my phone and scrolled through my subscriptions, eager to unwind with a Benoftheweek video.

The latest upload caught my eye, and I eagerly tapped on it. Ben's videos always brought me a sense of comfort, like catching up with an old friend. Lost in his latest adventure, I barely noticed the bustling crowd around me until I collided with someone while reaching for my drink.

Startled, I looked up to apologize, only to find myself face to face with none other than Ben himself. My heart raced with disbelief as I realized who he was. I'd been a fan of his videos for years, and now here he was, standing right in front of me.

Ben's kind eyes softened as he noticed the coffee stains on my jeans and sweater. Without hesitation, he offered me his hockey hoodie to cover up the mess. As I slipped into the oversized hoodie, a wave of joy and warmth washed over me. It was like wearing a piece of his world.

Feeling giddy with excitement, I asked Ben for a selfie to capture the unexpected moment. He chuckled warmly and obliged, his arm wrapping around me in a friendly embrace.

Ben insisted on buying me another coffee and a muffin to make up for the mishap, even though I knew it was my fault. We found a cozy spot to sit and chat, the conversation flowing effortlessly between us.

Curious about the hoodie, I asked Ben about his interest in hockey. Surprisingly, he admitted that he wasn't much into the sport but collected jerseys because he liked the way they looked.

Ben's eyes fell on my bag, noticing the array of books and a laptop peeking out from within. "So, what major are you taking?" he asked, genuine curiosity shining in his eyes.

"I'm studying Journalism," I replied with a smile, feeling a spark of pride at sharing my chosen field of study. "It's actually my first year here."

"Ah, journalism! That's awesome," Ben exclaimed, nodding appreciatively. "Gotta love the power of words. You'll do great, I'm sure."

I thanked him, feeling a rush of encouragement from his words.

Then, with a mischievous twinkle in his eye, Ben leaned in closer and quipped, "Well, at least the coffee didn't decide to make your books and laptop its next victims. That would've been a real headline: 'Coffee Spill Disaster Strikes New Journalism Student!'"

We both chuckled at his joke, the tension from the accidental collision melting away into shared laughter. It was moments like these that made unexpected encounters truly memorable.

As we continued talking, I glanced out the coffee shop window that had the reflection the clock and realized how quickly time had flown. I needed to get back to my apartment soon.

Sensing my dilemma, Ben offered to drive me home. Grateful for the gesture, I accepted, and we chatted animatedly during the short drive.

During the drive, I couldn't help but notice the pom-poms dangling from the car's ceiling. I remembered the video where Ben decorated them, feeling like I was right there with him during that moment.

"Those pom-poms are adorable," I remarked, unable to contain my smile as I touched one lightly.

Ben laughed, a warm sound that filled the car. "Thanks! I thought they added a fun touch to the car."

"They definitely do," I replied, feeling a rush of gratitude for the shared connection, however small.

As we pulled up to my building I gathered my belongings, preparing to step out of the car, Ben turned to me with a hesitant expression. "Hey, before you go, I was wondering if… would you be interested in going out for dinner sometime? I had a really great time talking to you, and I'd love to get to know you better."

My heart skipped a beat at his unexpected invitation. "I would love to," I replied, feeling a surge of excitement coursing through me. "Here, let me give you my number."

We exchanged phones, inputting our contact information, before reluctantly parting ways. Before I closed the door, Ben reached into the backseat and handed me one of his favorite caps as a parting gift.

"Consider it a token of our unexpected meeting," he said with a charming grin.

I thanked him profusely, feeling incredibly grateful for the unexpected gesture.

As I watched him drive off into the night, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. One of my biggest dreams had just come true, all thanks to a chance encounter at a coffee shop. As I settled in for the night, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the future date with Ben and the endless possibilities it held.

Ellis: "Are you okay? Miss Kate.”

When I opened my eyes, there was a worried Ellis and the ceiling of my familiar room.

(That's right, I...)

I recall feeling dizzy when I returned to the castle after my mission.

Ellis: "You suddenly collapsed. Mr. Roger examined you and said you would be anaemic and tired."

Ellis: "Victor is making soup with plenty of spinach in a hurry."

(Huh?)

Kate: "These things at the bedside are...?"

Ellis: "The water is Liam. Harry is the candy. That is from......”

After Ellis carefully told me who each item is from, I raised my eyebrows a little apologetically.

Ellis: "I was so worried about you, I was in such a hurry and didn't prepare anything, so I ended up being by your side like this."

Kate: “So that's what happened. Sorry to worry you....”

(Ah…..)

As I stumble to raise my body from the bed, Ellis holds me in his arms.

Ellis: ".....Don't get up too fast.”

Kate: ".....Oh, I'm sorry."

Ellis: “No. Sleep again. Your job today is to get some rest."

(Ellis is right. If I push myself too hard, I might cause trouble again.)

I nodded and laid my body on the bed, and Ellis's hand gently touched my forehead.

Ellis: "I wonder if it's a little hot.... Shall I cool it down?

I hastily call out to Ellis, who is wetting and wringing out a towel that was by his side with water.

Kate: “I'm fine. It's just anemia.”

Ellis: "You always say you're fine."

(Eh…..)

Ellis: “And yet you are so caring and kind to everyone."

Ellis's words that flowed into my heavy head made me really happy.

Kate: "....Thank you very much, Ellis. But that's not true...."

Ellis: "The things placed by your bedside are proof of that."

Ellis: "That's why"

Ellis's hand places a cool towel on my forehead, avoiding my bangs.

Ellis: "I've always wanted to spoil you like this."

Ellis: “You work hard every day. Thank you."

(…..Ngh)

Kate: "Ellis is spoiling me enough, isn't he?"

Ellis: “Oh… Is that so?”

Kate: "Yes, it is.”

Ellis: “If so, I'd like to spoil you even more. .....Can I?"

Perhaps it's because I'm weak, I want to lean on Ellis's kindness that melts me into a soggy mess.

(Just for today, you can spoil me..... right?)

Kate: "Well, if you don't mind my asking, could you get me a glass of water there?"

Ellis: "Yeah. I'll make you drink it by my mouth."

Kate: “…You can’t do that.”

Ellis: "Fufu, I'm sorry. I was just kidding."

After that, Ellis gave me a cup of soup that Victor had brought for me to drink.

The soup with plenty of spinach fills your mind and body softly.

(When my body warms up, I'm getting sleepy......)

Ellis: "...Are you sleepy? It's okay, go to sleep."

Ellis: "I'll stay by your side until you fall asleep."

Sitting on the bed, Ellis pats me on the blanket as if to soothe me.

It's like a gentle lullaby.

Ellis: ".....When I was still young, there was a child who stayed by my side like this when I couldn't sleep."

Ellis: "......We spent sleepless nights hugging each other and holding hands."

Ellis: “I think I sleep better when I know someone is there with me."

Ellis's voice melts into the soft twilight air.

It gave me an indescribable comfort, and even the contours of my consciousness melted into the air.

(...just a little longer ...I want to be in this air...)

(b…..ut…..)

…

Ellis: “…Miss Kate?”

Ellis: "Are you asleep?"

Ellis: “………..”

Ellis: ".....The truth is, as soon as I heard you had fallen ill, I got you a blanket."

Ellis: "But I lied because I thought I could be by your side if I pretended not to have anything prepared."

Ellis: “I'm sorry I lied to you. Good night, Miss Kate.”

…

I had a deep, deep dream.

I couldn't get out of bed for some reason, but it's a dream that Ellis just spoils me.

Ellis: “It's okay, Miss Kate. .....I'm here for you."

Ellis: “I will spoil you, love you, and make you happy."

Smiling at me like that, his words filled my heart like a sweet poison.

Even after I woke up from my dream, I somehow wanted to see Ellis.

Something about the way Valkyrie's eyes are drawn and the highly stylistic creases in the front of her suit remind me very strongly of Percival's phase 1 work. I actually think this cover is okay tbh. Also, it ornge.

It would be an alright cover if it was a cover for a normal book. It would have been a great cover for 'Resurrection' I like how the name of the author is on the brim of skulls head, that looks pretty cool. And he improved how he draws Val's hair compared to the SoW cover.

But, bloody hell, for the cover of the FINAL book it's fucking BORING.

Percival took so long for THIS? He missed his deadline and was almost a month late (cover was meant to be revealed before christmas) for THIS? Bc he took so long I thought they'd go all out and smack a bunch of characters on it MCU style, but nope. This should have not taken this long since essentially this is just a front-facing headshot of Skul and a halfbody shot of Val just standing there with her hands raised. With what's presumably a stock image of sparks in the background and a few FX brushes smacked on top of it to impress the non-artists.

The characters are also grey scale which is a lot easier and faster than drawing with colours. And knowing Percival the skull is probably a stock image he painted over. By all accounts this shouldn't have taken as long as it did which makes me think my theory about him being busy with his own projects and half-assing SP stuff was right tbh.

On top of that, there are a few things that feel off. Like, turtle neck Skul returns, tho on this cover it's not as bad as on the DoA cover. The shading on Skul's skull feels off. I think bc it lacks definition/is too soft and there is this weird shadow on his teeth where light should be. He still can't draw necks to save his life. In general, the shading on Valkyrie looks very flat, especially on her hair, face and arms. The muscles on her arms look like drawn by a n00b. Like, he's ignoring how the muscles 'flow' into each other.

I'm shit at explaining so here's a very quick and sloppy overpaint to show what I mean. Tbh I don't like doing these overpaints, but I feel like people won't understand what I'm trying to say if I don't show them

Too be fair, I'm shit at drawing muscles too, but I ain't the one whose job it is to draw this covers, so-... But you get the idea of what I mean, yeah?

I also feel like Val's head is too small, but it ain't that obvious bc of her hair. To fix that I think I'd rather make the body smaller to fit rather than make the head bigger bc then the head might cover up Skul too much? He straight up forgot the tattoo on her left arm. Some people think this is Darquesse and not Val bc of it. Something is off with the hands too I think, but that might be bc Val's magic partially obscures them. The cover also lacks dynamic poses, perspectives, colours, expressions or an interest composition. It's too symmetrical. Interest is added through asymmetry.

The simplicity worked for the DotL (the one with just Skul's skull on it) bc it was atmospheric and gave the vibe of the-calm-AFTER-the-storm. But this cover seems to be going for the-final-showdown vibe and it kinda has the calm-BEFORE-the-storm vibe going on in regards to the confrontation between Val and Skul that's gonna happen but that doesn't fit with the vibe of the books, I think. Like there is so much stuff set up, storylines to finish and new gods that got introduced that the book is probably going to be a chaotic, fast paced mess and I'd like to see that reflected in the cover, ya know?

Also, once again, a more high res version of the cover has been uploaded to the UK SP website and on that one you can see how detailed Valkyrie has been rendered. Especially her suit is very detailed and you can see the materials that its made off. Meanwhile Skul is at the same time over and under rendered, meaning, he smacked details like cracks on holes on top of the skull eventho you can still see some sketch lines (right eye-socket, upper 'lip'). Yeah, this strikes me as rushed..

TL;DR: The cover is the best out of the phase 2 covers, but it's still not a good cover. It's boring, has flat shading and strikes me as rushed and half-assed

Being an artist in this fandom is awful bc understanding enough about art to see a bunch of mistakes he made makes it impossible to enjoy the canon art :/

This is my final gif for my 1st project. The concept was simple, but the execution ended up being more time-consuming than it needed to be.

My idea was to do a sort of "ebb and flow" system, where the frames for an object would go, like,

1 > 2 > 3 > 4 > 5 > 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 > 2 > 3 ...

This was for the rabbit (chewing) and the grass (swaying), each going through several cycles. I also added some pauses and irregularities (ex: 4 > 5 > 5 > 5 > 4...) to make it less robotic.

For the other clouds (moving across the sky), there was only one "cycle".

Clouds

The concept of the clouds was simple enough: copy, paste, move the clouds a few clicks over, repeat. But,

Parts of the clouds overlapped into the other artboards with each copy and paste, which got cluttered and confusing to trim.

I ended up moving the clouds far too gradually (10 "left arrow clicks" per frame) and this resulted in more artboards than Illustrator could handle (and too long of a gif). I ended up having to start over and go twice as fast.

So while cloud movement in concept was simple, in practice it wasn't ideal for this format (Illustrator isn't an animation program after all).

Bird

The bird was amusingly complicated as well. The bird actually combined both concepts: the ebb and flow (1 > 2 > 3...) for the flapping wings, and the single cycle (making a loop back to its original spot) for its position in the sky.

I had to redo and start this one over a few times.

Organizing

Once I got to the bird, it had all gotten a bit confusing with the several different elements all on their own irregular ebb and flow cycles. I ended up having to write out a frame by frame planner to see which step of the cycle each part (rabbit, grass, bird) would be on for each frame.

This is the one for the bird's wing position I made after I kept messing it up.

What I learned

I learned a lot of useful tools during this project, especially the search and find functions, the puppet warp tool, how to rearrange artboards, how to keep layers organized on duplicated artboards, and how to paste in place.

What I'm proud of

I'm proud of how much more comfortable I got in customizing my workspace and navigating my way around the locations of tools, settings, windows, and shortcuts. I also like the general aesthetic I narrowed down on as far as colors and mood of the piece.

What I'd do differently

As described earlier in this post, I ran into a lot of trouble from not having things really planned out beforehand. I wish I would have written out an actual outline so I wouldn't have spent so much time on trial and error.

Overall, this was a fun project (that I finished last Monday but didn't upload until now). For some reason, my brain was not functioning for the "writing up informative captions about the learning process" part and so I had been grinding at work for my other classes and life responsibilities while feeling a complete block for finishing up the final details (uploading and writing about) for this one. 😞
