Week 1: Build Your Beast
Salutations, stooges. It is time to build your beast. Will it be feathered? Furry? Flame-scaled? Will you be re-purposing an OC you already have or creating a completely new character? Will your beast be big and brash or soft-spoken and nimble-footed? Here’s your template. Download it, draw or describe (or crochet or paint or mold or embroider or immortalize in shanty form) your character. In short, unleash your wildest whims upon it. We look forward to meeting your horrid creation.
Upload your completed template using the tag #build a beast to share your grizzly creation with the world (a reminder to use your reblog controls if you’d like your beast to remain hidden in the wilds).
Loathsomely yours, us.

tumblr tuesday: beasts you've built
The best thing about watching all your delightfully ghastly beasties come out of the woodwork is seeing how their horrors endear you. Please enjoy this host of vile varmints, and please, we beseech you, click through to read about them and follow along. Where do they dwell? That's for this week to determine. Stay tuned.

The October Build-A-Beast Challenge hosted by Tumblr continues! It’s time to prepare for fright night! What are you going to wear?
You can work however you want! Fill the space in whatever medium you feel comfortable with, be it digital, traditional, written, or build it in your favorite game. The objective here is to have fun!
You can download this week’s template for your own creations from this post (week one here , week two here, week three here). Be sure to use the #build a beast tag for your creations and check out what other folks have made!
My Art This Week
Oh man I was having such a hard time coming up with an idea, until I had the inspiration of an early pilot. An outfit made for folks that used to fly in a cockpit open to air makes so much sense for someone zipping around on a broom! Her costume is based on photographs of Amelia Earhart.
You May Find Useful
If you’re having a hard time picking out a costume, think about attributes that your character already has and how they could be adapted into something new. Maybe long hair becomes a tail - maybe a color pallet matches a familiar object - maybe their hobby becomes an obsession!
Who am I?
Hi, I’m Emily! I’m an illustrator and concept artist, currently working in the tabletop gaming space. My most recent projects include providing card art for the official Blaseball: Wildcards published by Wayfinder Games, as well as prop art for indie homebrew D&D manuals.

This week’s Build-A-Beast is about the familiar, and I was really looking forward to draw Aydee’s sparrow ❤
It felt only fair that he would have a matching little cloak to keep him warm!

Week 3: Fashion Your Familiar
So. We meet again. Your beast demands a familiar, a friend, a sidekick. It has fallen to you to create this, just as you assembled the original entity. Where does this familiar come from? How did they meet your character? How do they communicate? What do they bring to the team? Are they animal, vegetable, or mineral? Perhaps they are a mother-of-pearl vapor cloud. Or a vindictive stapler with a revenge agenda. Or a mischievous monstera called cheddar.
Either way, you know what to do: Download your template, do your drawing or writing or crocheting or molding, and upload it with the tag #build a beast to add it to the menagerie.
Loathsomely yours, us.

tumblr today: costumes you’ve conjured
Felicitations, Frankenfolk. We wish you a very Halloween, Tumblr, on this most auspicious of eves. We have, alas, reached the end of the Build a Beast challenge. Today is—as some of the more discerning among you will have noticed—a Monday. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Today, we celebrate your costumed critters.
How will you celebrate? If you haven’t yet, check out the entire parade of crafty characters your peers have created. If you’re new to the challenge, you could even have a go yourself if you like. It’s never too late to build a beast (here’s a reminder of week 1, week 2, week 3, and week 4 templates for your convenience). For now, enjoy these:

You can work however you want! Fill the space in whatever medium you feel comfortable with, be it digital, traditional, or written. The objective here is to have fun!

My Art This Week
One of my goals this year has been starting to make nice character sheets for my OCs. They’re sometimes frustrating but it has been satisfying to see the finished references when I’m done. This challenge provided an opportunity to dust off a witchy cat that I drew in a sketchbook challenge in 2016 and make her really mine.
You May Find Useful
I like my designs best when I keep them simple, and limit them to a few ideas so things don't get too cluttered or confusing to the eye. For example, I tend to limit colors to 3-4 main choices that define the character, with a few compliments for smaller details. Here I chose black and orange to fit the Halloween theme, and an accent of purple that pops nicely with the fur.
Who am I?
