Well, I was angry when I saw African leaders shaking hands with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and the terrorist, Yevgeny Prigozhin. But the article shows that only 17 African leaders out of a possible 54 attended, just under a third.
It is still shameful to see this Russia-Africa summit. And while Russia expert Ivana Stadner correctly calls on Britain to defend itself against Kremlin pontification about British's colonial crimes, there's another problem that needs addressing.
Many Africans and African diaspora have been fed a diet of anti-Western sentiment owing to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the European colonial era. But then we see many African leaders lining up to please dictators such as Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping and African civilians parrotting propaganda from despots, including their own.
I know from personal experience that there are Africans who either consider such nations to be better than European countries just because neither was directly involved in the 19th century Scramble for Africa, or, worse, believe that neither side is better than the other.
Both positions are incoherent and completely untrue.
It doesn't take a political analyst to see that Russia's interest in Africa is malign. Russia is under severe sanctions for its illegal war in Ukraine, where it currently limits Ukraine's ability to ship grain abroad to prevent Ukraine from reclaiming more territory. So the first motivation for Russia's alignment with Africa is financial. Russia also has grain and desperately needs new customers.
Next, Russian terrorist organisations such as the Wagner Group have been operating on African soil for several years. They have infiltrated countries such as Congo the Central African Republic, and Mali. In fact, this article shows a group of clearly deluded Africans in Mali thanking the terrorist Wagner Group. Ignorance is painful-- and dangerous.
African dictators seeking to remain in power may wish to benefit from Russia's terrorist militias, especially as Russian state terror organisations are now known for their assassination programs.
This leads to the third point: the legitmisation of dictatorship. Russia is a failed state today because it is a dictatorship. Putin can only survive if he is seen to have the support of other dictators.
Contrary to the popular anti-Western narrative, the most significant factors influencing African poverty today are its own dictatorships, tribal warfare, corruption, Islamist terrorism, and environmental abuse. And even more contrary to the anti-Western narrative, the only part of the world that is heavily invested in helping Africa overcome these problems is the West.
Yes, that's right: the West.
But thanks to years of people in Britain being conditioned to denigrate our country, our history, and our culture, malign forces such as Russian propagandists have successfully capitalised on Western confusion and demoralisation.
The Kremlin recently published a paper calling for the investigation of Britain's colonial crimes. The hypocrisy is obscene. It's true that Britain did commit colonial crimes. But we have relinquished those territories and actually enjoy cordial relations with many former colonies via the Commonwealth.
Russia is currently in the middle of an insane, expansionist war designed to save Putin's dictatorship and take revenge on Ukraine for declaring independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. The Ukrainian referendum for independence was a major factor in the eventual collapse of the union, according to Ukrainian historian Sergei Plokhy; soon afterwards, Russia also voted to leave and over 70 years of the Evil Empire came to an end.
Putin, while pontificating about Britain's past, currently denies the validity of Ukrainian nationhood and falsifies Ukrainian history. He claimed in 2021 to respect the Ukrainian language and culture, yet his puppet, Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church, has repeatedly claimed that Ukraine is part of the same spiritual body, which he defines exclusively as a Russian-speaking space.
Anybody who is familiar with Putin knows that he often accuses others of crimes he himself is committing. This is why Russian dissidents who support the rule of law find themselves being investigated for corruption, and countries that call on Russia to end war find themselves being accused of starting it.
A strong and patriotic Britain would quickly rebuff these lies. But we have sunk into a brainless stupor where we endlessly accept attacks on our pride in our country. The results are not just depressing, but dangerous.
China, one of the most totalitarian and wicked regimes on the planet, is on course to overtake the United States economically. This will give China untold power in the political sphere, as evidenced by China's recent brokering of a diplomatic deal between Saudi Arabia and Iran. China also shot down a proposal at the despot-friendly United Nations to investigate possible crimes of genocide against its Uyghur Muslim minority. European nations had proposed the idea.
China supports Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while pretending to support dialogue. This is because China wishes to see whether it can get away with invading Taiwan.
China also supports Putin's dictatorship, since Xi Jinping is also a dictator using many of the same tactics as his northern neighbour. China is also practicing its own violent imperialist policy of denying the validity of Taiwan's national independence, even though it has rarely had any real control over the island in history. China terrorises Hong Kong through its slippery 'security' law. China denies the language rights of Tibetans and Inner Mongolians.
Anyone who really opposed imperialism would have far more to say about dictators from Russia, China, and many African nations than denigrating the West, which, for all its faults, is largely free, democratic, and committed to the rule of law.
Despite this, a recent report from UkraineTV (English edition) suggests that Russian encroachments on African territory have failed, with an encouraging thumbnail of Africans holding a Ukrainian flag.
Let us hope this is true. Either way, African leaders must reject Vladimir Putin and demand that Russia stop blocking Ukraine's ability to export grain.

why do I see many iranian flags at israeli protests?
Those are Pahlavists, a bunch of royalist Iranians that wish to reinstate the Imperial monarchy of Shah Pahlavi, a US/UK puppet. In 1953, Iran nationalised its oil reserve during the tenure of democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammed Mosadegh and so the British and their corporate representatives were expelled from the country. Obviously, Churchill the pig, did not like it when a colonized country strove back against them, so together with the help of the CIA, the British and Americans were able to overthrow Mosadegh. They installed the pro-Western statesman Fazlollah Zahedi and gave the tyrant Mohammed Reza Shah Pahlavi near consitutional power. The Communist Tudeh party was outlawed and neoliberal policies were enacted. All of this acted as the catalyst behind the Islamic revolution and the abolision of the pro-Western imperial state. Pahlavists hate the IR, Communists, and Muslims, so they're naturally predisposed towards the West and Israel
Either way, Pahlavists are all bourgeoise royalist scum and the West has only itself to blame for the existence of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

So I take it being for Canada becoming a republic, you don't really care about the British royal family, including Harry & Meghan Barkle?
I do not.
The Monarchy is an archaic and colonial institution that needs to be abolished.
These people can be rich and enjoy their lives or whatever, that's not harmed if the monarchy disappears.
They shouldn't have a perpetual grip on democratic institutions thousands of kilometres away just because in the middle ages people thought this one particular family deserved to be treated like gods.

I dream of a Hallmark royal romance where the worldbuilding goes beyond "there's a tiny British-flavored Western European nation." Let's branch out. Let's go crazy. Let's put this monarchy in North America so we've got this entire alternate history of political and cultural differences that our spunky commoner has to navigate.
Our options include:
Most of the US exists as we know it, but there are a handful of micronations that for some reason maintained their independence and established monarchies. These nations would have a history of distrust of the wider United States and be fiercely patriotic--devotion to their national identity is the only thing that has kept their kingdom alive. Spunky Commoner would be a bit uncomfortable in this kingdom. Why are these people so devoted to a monarchy in a modern democratic continent? It's weird. If she starts a romance with their charming single prince, the wider public would not be happy with the prospect of an American queen. The prince would have to do a lot of explaining about sociopolitical history to make this cute American understand his nation, and he'd have to do some serious PR to bring his people around if he wants to marry her.
The US consists of little more than the original thirteen colonies, and the rest of the continent is made up of kingdoms that gained their independence from other European nations but maintained a lot of cultural ties. The middle of the country is a French-styled monarchy based in New Orleans. California is ruled by a very Spanish monarchy. There's a czar in Alaska. Maine became a monarchy when they seceded from Massachusetts. Our Spunky Commoner is familiar with the history of this multi-cultural continent, but there are a lot more cultural and political differences to navigate--potential language barriers, various alliances with other monarchies that could be jeopardized if he married a US commoner, etc.
The thirteen colonies never managed to come together into one nation and remained separate states, some that stayed republics and some that became monarchies. Each of these states made their own purchases and alliances that extended their territory--some of which added to the original states and some that eventually broke off to form their own nations. Cultures have evolved in each state based upon alliances and immigration, and there's a complicated history of wars between the states. Things have been pretty stable since WWII, and our Spunky Commoner from a republic is traveling to different nations when she catches the eye of a foreign prince--which could have a massive effect upon this fractured continent.

One day in the future, there will be a place named the United States of Africa Federation. It will be a vast territory comprised of many countries. The leaders will convene and decide to unite the region to make it stronger, thus creating a federation.
In the United States of Africa Federation, there will be one prominent leader known as the President. The President will be the leader who will make all the significant decisions. However, the President will not be a dictator. The President will be elected by all the people within the United States of Africa Federation.
They will also have a single currency for all the countries - no more kwachas, nairas, or rand - just one significant currency called the Afri-dollar, making trading and other activities easier. Additionally, they will have one massive army known as the African Defence Force to protect the entire federation from bad actors and keep everyone safe.
The United States of Africa Federation will not be perfect. There will be complex issues to address. The Federation will have to figure out how to share resources and help all the people in need.
Overall, people will work together to create a better future for Africa. They will make Africa strong and proud. It will be a place where everyone will be equal and will respect one another.
This concludes the story of the United States of Africa Federation, prophesied by African revolutionaries who have advocated for the unity of Africa:
1. Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana): Nkrumah was a key figure in the Pan-African movement and played a crucial role in Ghana's independence from British colonial rule. He strongly advocated for African unity and was instrumental in the formation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union (AU).
2. Patrice Lumumba (Democratic Republic of Congo): Lumumba was an influential leader in the struggle for Congo's independence from Belgium. He envisioned a united Africa free from colonialism and exploitation. Unfortunately, his leadership was cut short by his assassination in 1961.
3. Julius Nyerere (Tanzania): Nyerere was the first president of Tanzania and a prominent advocate for African unity. He believed in socialism and played a crucial role in the formation of the OAU. Nyerere actively supported liberation movements across Africa and worked towards economic and political integration.
4. Amílcar Cabral (Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde): Cabral was a revolutionary leader and the founder of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC). He fought against Portuguese colonial rule and championed the idea of a united Africa. Cabral's ideas on liberation and African unity continue to inspire many.
5. Thomas Sankara (Burkina Faso): Sankara, often referred to as "Africa's Che Guevara," was the president of Burkina Faso. He advocated for self-reliance, social justice, and pan-Africanism. Sankara pushed for economic independence and called for African countries to break free from the shackles of neocolonialism.
6. Samora Machel (Mozambique): Machel was the first president of an independent Mozambique. He was a staunch supporter of African liberation movements and a vocal advocate for African unity. Machel emphasized the importance of self-determination and worked towards regional integration in Southern Africa.
7. Jomo Kenyatta (Kenya): Kenyatta played a crucial role in Kenya's struggle for independence and became the country's first president. While focusing on building a strong and independent Kenya, he also emphasized the importance of African unity and cooperation.

Oh my god this got so long. I swore to myself that I was going to be normal about this and not just dump all of my headcanon immediately but like
Do you ever think about the fact that in the 1950s & 1960s there just were not that many nuclear weapons blueprints out there (and most of the document stealing was done by long term plants, not high risk guys like Curt & Owen)
If you were a spy during the Cold War you were most likely doing regime change. You were arming, training, and supplying coups. You were helping set the stage for American or UK capital to set up shop and repress and enslave Indigenous populations and export every drop of wealth possible from the global south. You were fighting a proxy war against "communism" (which often just meant workers striking for better conditions, at least intially) all across the globe.
With that context I think a lot about the coup in Guatemala in 1954, where the CIA trained and armed the coup and overthrew the democratically elected president of Guatemala (Jacobo Árbenz Guzmán) at the behest of the United Fruit Company. Árbenz was left of center, and he had land reforms planned that would compensate UFCO for their land, appropriate it, and redistribute it to workers. Guatemala offered to pay the value listed on UFCO tax documents (1.2 million), but UFCO demanded 16 million
If I start talking about this I'll never stop, but long story short UFCO had spent 50+ years gobbling up all the land in Guatemala, grew Bananas and exported them for massive profits, and terrorized or outright massacred Indigenous workers to keep them in line. The 1954 coup and the subsequent I think its 36 years of civil war in Guatemala is all down to the CIA doing a coup because the head of the CIA (Allen Dulles) was on the board of United Fruit and they wanted that blood money baby. It was a genocide.
Hard swerve back into it here: I don't know about Owen, but at least Agent Curt Mega had a *very* good chance of participating in the 1954 coup. In creating a literal Banana Republic (a puppet government controlled by US interests). I tend to think Owen was there too because it's more interesting that way. I think it's a mistake to focus exclusively on the Russian cat vs mouse and ignore the larger geopolitical context of the cold war.
Owen "dies" because of Curt's hubris- not just the drinking and talking him into risks he isn't comfortable with, but with his job at A.S.S., because someone else points and Curt shoots. In my headcanon Curt helped to create a banana republic that harmed and killed an incredible number of people, and he is just as careless when he leaves his banana peel on the stairs and "kills" Owen. Curt is absolutely firm in the belief that he is one of the good guys. And I think Owen was prolly the same way- until his body got wrecked and he got abandoned by the man he loved and he had a long, long time to think about the foreign policy of his government and what he and Curt really *did* on their fun lil spy jaunts.
If Owen was in Honduras (where they staged the Guatemala coup), then he has to reckon with the fact that he "died" due to *his own* hubris as well. He has to process that he joined the intelligence game because he grew up during the Blitz, during WWII, but that post WWII Britain was doing the same imperialist bullshit the US was. That Owen wasn't saving the world, he was destroying it. He was crushing half the planet under the thumb of British power. He was enacting the very genocides he joined up to prevent. That's why he wants a world with "no more agencies, no more spies, no more secrets."
So when Chimera offers Owen the chance to undermine US & UK interests, to take the power out of their hands by using and discarding a ridiculous n*zi, Owen just goes for it. I don't subscribe to the Chimera brainwashing theory, I like to think Owen joined Chimera because post-banana he became ideologically aligned with Chimera.
I imagine Chimera pulled him out of the rubble and got him back on his feet, and whispered in his ear about US/UK imperialism. We can argue about whether the ends justify the means, whether he goes too far, whether Chimera has pure intentions (doubt), but Owen isn't just some nightmare monster. He tells Curt "you've been blind" and "no one's innocent." He calls Curt a "caveman" and what is it, an "arrogant brute?" He has a rationale. He believes he is right. He's kind of a dick about it, but he has radicalized in a way Curt hasn't.
I think Owen sees Curt as clinging to cool guy spy shit (and the macho straight guy facade) instead of seeing the world for what it is. I think he probably also thinks about Alan Turing, about the UK arresting gay men- men who had previously been considered national heroes- for doing what Owen does (loving a man). I think he thinks about the US doing an elaborate and very public witchhunt of communists and gay people and anyone else who doesn't conform to good ol American capitalism. I think he insults Curt because he has been through a lot of shit that has changed his perspective, and he cannot believe that Curt *still doesn't see it*
I know there's the whole "DMA killed 1147 people, mostly girls from ages 14 to 22" kickstarter joke, but I'm sorry as much as I love Cynthia it'll be a cold day in hell before I believe anything the US state department says.
I don't think Agent Curt Mega is a perfect adorable babygirl who has never done anything wrong, I don't think Owen is (and has always been) a cruel and sadistic comic book villain. I think these are two men who loved each other in a time where it was very difficult, in a profession where they are literally the property of their respective governments. Where they could be arrested and forced into conversion therapy if they were discovered.
I think they were flawed (Curt cocky and careless, Owen condescending) but loved and respected each other as best they could, and when a massive trauma hits them they break different ways. Curt remains the lawful good, but Owen reframes his sense of right and wrong. I tend to think he did legit torture a lot of people, and even enjoyed it, but I think it was people related to these proxy wars, people related to these coups. People who could advance Chimera's objectives
I think Owen tortures Curt because he hates him, and he doesn't kill Curt (despite having soooo many chances) because he loves him. Owen has so much hesitation in the staircase scene. When Curt brings up their relationship he wavers and his face softens and his gun drops. He brings the gun back up, but despite having Curt at gunpoint for like 3 minutes he doesn't kill him. He hates him, but he loves him. If Curt takes the chance to talk to Owen, then maybe...
But Curt is convinced he is the good guy, which makes Owen the bad guy. And bad guys get put down like dogs. The ideological split is something Curt can't handle, so he shoots and kills his unarmed ex-lover. He just needs a win. He needs it to be over.
I don't have anything against anyone else's headcanon, I think it's a testament to how good Spies Are Forever really is that nearly 8 years later so many people still spend so much time taking apart this comedy musical about gay spies. But for me, it's more compelling if Owen is traumatized and flawed and ideologically opposed to the heroes of our story. I think it's more interesting that Curt kills the man he spent 4 years pining for because he can't accept the possibility that he could be the baddie.
Oh god I have to stop this is too much. But yeah. I've got feelings.

• 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐫 •
The First World War accelerated the path to modernity. It was the "Primal catastrophe" of the 20th century, an era of war, violence and displacement. It cost the lives of around 17 million soldiers and civilians, destroyed large parts of Europe and left behind unresolved problems that led to further violent conflicts.
[Without the First World War, the rise of fascism and communism and the transition to systemic competition between West and East, the 20th century cannot be understood.]
The assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir Franz Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 is regarded as the trigger for the First World War. In Vienna, the military pressed for a swift retaliatory strike against Serbia. The German Reich assured Austria-Hungary of its unrestricted loyalty to the Danube monarchy.
On July 28: Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia - Russia starts mobilization.
On August 1: The German Empire declares war on the Russian Empire.
August 2: Invasion of German troops in Luxembourg.
August 3: Invasion of German Troops in Belgium - the First World War begins.
The age of weapons of mass destruction and industrial warfare began in early 1915 with the German chlorine gas attack on the Ypernbogen. Almost two million German, French and British soldiers died on the barren battlefields and in the trenches of the "Hell of Verdun" in 1916. However, the course of the front changed only slightly as a result of these material battles.
In total, the war claimed 17 million lives. It ended on November 11, 1918 with an armistice and the defeat of the German Reich. In Germany, the monarchy collapsed and the Weimar Republic was founded.
In 1917/1918, numerous monarchies collapsed in quick succession and were replaced by democratic republics, as was the case in Germany in November 1918.
After 1918, no new stable framework of order was recognizable - neither socially, politically nor internationally.
The new models of the Russian Bolsheviks, the fascists in Italy and the National Socialists in Germany were unmistakably opposed to the liberal legacy of the 19th century, not least in their pronounced willingness to use violence. This had to do with the diverse experiences of world war, the transitions from state war to revolution and civil war, as well as the disappointed expectations in many societies in view of the peace treaties of 1919.

CW rape mention
The new hot take I’m seeing is, “OMG! I can’t believe you’re accusing those nice freedom fighters in Hamas of raping Israeli women. You just believe it so quickly because you’re Islamophobic!”
And I’m like, “HA! Are you truly that gullible?”Islamophobia ain’t got shit to do with it. Know who else’s army used rape as a tool of war? The Russian army in Ukraine and other countries they’ve invaded, the US. army in countries America has invaded, the Japanese army in the countries they invaded, the British army, the French army, the army of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and yes, even the Israeli army in Palestine,… I could go on and on
Employing rape as a weapon of war is something that, unfortunately, routinely happens. So why are we required to believe that Hamas is just so uniquely good and pure that they’re above raping women??
Are there racist Islamophobes who will believe anything bad or unflattering about Muslims? Yes. Does that mean Hamas isn’t guilty of committing war crimes? No.
Anyway, look: this sounds like propaganda very specifically designed to make people be wary of criticizing Hamas. But it’s not Islamophobia, it’s acknowledging what has happened before and very likely happened just recently in Gaza
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - I want Palestinian freedom. I do not, however, believe that soldiers raping women or killing children and the elderly in cold blood is a necessary part of achieving victory. Stated differently, rape + intentionality killing children is indefensible and inexcusable at all times and under any circumstances, regardless of who is doing it
Tumblr media
And finally, let’s not pretend that Israel hasn’t been committing war crimes against Palestinians literally for decades. The IDF is deadass bragging to the world on international media about committing a massive war crime right now, as they are indiscriminately bombing the hell out of hospitals, schools, mosques, children and noncombatant civilian families in Gaza—and Israel is not even giving innocent people anywhere to go. They’ve closed the borders and escape routes. That’s a fucking war crime too
My daily reminders:
TERFs dni
the Holocaust happened
Antisemitism is real
Hamas ≠ Palestine
Israel is an apartheid state
Collective punishment is a war crime
You can support Palestine without being antisemitic
Free Palestine 🇵🇸

The British tabloid press has a history of targeting royal family members who are seen as controversial, such as Princess Diana, and they have continued this pattern with Meghan and Harry. However, to an unprecedented level, tabloids have deliberately manipulated the public discourse surrounding the couple to make it increasingly toxic and hateful.
This hateful campaign landed on the doorstep of Jamaica. Jamaica’s journey towards becoming a Republic is rooted in a desire for it's absolute self-governance, free from the vestiges of external control.
The characterization of this movement as “anti-monarchy” denies the legitimate and democratically supported aspirations of the sovereign people of Jamaica to take full control of their political destiny.
