I'm not used to writing on here, but in the last few weeks there has been a figure I can't stop thinking about and not that many people know: Flávio de Carvalho (1899-1973). He was not only one of the pioneers of modernist architecture and painting in Brazil, but also designed the first Brazilian fashion show in 1951 and is regarded as the first performance and multimedia artist in the country. His most notable work is Experiência n° 3 from 1956 also known as "New Look", where he proposed an unisex garment specific for Brazilian weather and scandalized the public by wearing an early form of miniskirt on the streets of São Paulo.

Some of Oscar Niemeyer's masterpieces appreciation post. Considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture in Brazil and the world. Also an open communist (PCB), Niemeyer's leftists views made him flee to Paris due to 1964's right-wing military coup. Highly influenced by Soviet Futurism, his work evolves exploration of reinforced concrete and a strong signature for a better future. After his exile in countries such as Cuba and the Soviet Union, Niemeyer served as PCB's president from 1992 to 1996.
Over a career of 78 years he designed approximately 600 projects, followed by numerous awards such as the appointment as inaugural head of architecture at the University of Brasilia, honorary membership of the American Institute of Architects and also the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize winner.

It was only after Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021) received the Pritzker Prize in 2006 that the German-speaking world really took note of his work, a circumstance that was also reflected by the basically non-existing German-language literature on the Brazilian master. An exception to this day is Annette Spiro’s monograph „Paulo Mendes da Rocha - Bauten und Projekte/Buildings and Projects“, published by Niggli in 2002. In it Spiro, architect herself and since 2007 professor at ETH Zurich, collects 37 of PMdR’s projects and provides an in-depth analysis of his design principles and the fundamentals of his architecture. Beginning with the basic components of architecture, i.e. site, shelter, cantilevers and pillars, Spiro elucidates Mendes da Rocha’s arrangement of these components and reasoning behind it. From this she then changes over to explaining the interrelationship between these components in the architect’s designs: PMdR’s architecture is characterized by a close relationship with ground and site, a particular light regime but also by the contrastive pairs horizontal vs. vertical planes and voids vs. filled spaces. After this introduction to Mendes da Rocha’s architectural principles the author presents a thorough catalogue of his works that ranges from Club Atlético Paulistano gymnasium to the University of São Paulo museums. With each project being discussed in illustrative texts and supplemented with drawings, plans and photographs the reader receives in-depth information on Mendes da Rocha’s built and unbuilt designs, visually stunning and highly readable. Thus, Annette Spiro’s monograph, irrespective of the fact that it is the only comprehensive publication on Mendes da Rocha also in German, still is a valuable publication that rivals many other and later released books.

So, in Brazilian architecture, urbanism, and politics news, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva issued a decree to prohibit the use of materials, structures, equipment, and hostile construction techniques in open spaces for public use that have as their objective or result the removal of homeless people, elderly people, young people, children, people with disabilities, and other segments of the population.

The decree regulates item XX of the caput of art. 2nd of Law No. 10,257, of July 10, 2001, previously included by Law No. 14,489, of 2022, the Padre Júlio Lancellotti Law, named in honour of a priest who is a famous activist against hostile architecture.
