hello, I’m a new writer here on tumblr. I’ve been posting my writing lately but that seems to attract not even a single person. And I want people to review my writings and post down their opinions on it..how do I get people to view my writing here?
Like any social media platform, you get out of Tumblr what you put in.
Tumblr is all about community, so it's important to make sure you engage, not just put out content. We've put together this article in the Reading Room that's all about how writers can get the most out of Tumblr.
But we also have some great resources for more general book marketing that have some transferrable information for any social media platform you might be using to promote your work.

A guide to the parts of the book
All the elements of the book are grouped into three main parts:
Front Matter introduces the book to the reader. It includes the title page, copyright page, dedication, foreword, and preface, among others.
Body is the main text of the book. Besides the story itself, it includes part opening pages, chapter opening pages, epilogue, afterword, and conclusion.
Back Matter provides additional information about the book. This part consists of colophon, errata, index, list of contributors, a glossary, and notes, among others.

They help make it so that your book gets discovered without having to do major marketing. Plain and simple, they are important.

I made bookmark business cards to hand out at markets. There are four designs and they each have a little oracle message on the back ☺️
I wanted to make something that people would want to keep and get some use out of, so bookmarks with pretty art and magical messages seemed like the thing to do!
They were really popular, and a great icebreaker to bring people into the stall 💜

Judging a Book by Its Cover
I've been in the book business for over 40 years. I can't tell you how many times I have asked an author, editor, or designer in a meeting if they had looked for comp covers on the shelf of a bookstore and they have replied "no". Knowing where your book is going to be shelved and noting the books that will be shelved around it is increadibly important when concisdering a cover design. Authors, editors, designers, and publishers should be making a point of being inside a bookstore at least once a month. This should also include searching your book's genre, authors name, and competative authors name s on Amazon, Bookshop.org and Google in general to see what other related books come up.
Another thing that magazines do but is surprisingly not done very often in book publishing is a cover review. Once a quarter or at the very least, once a year, lay out all the book covers of your comparable genre by sales numbers. Sales trends and design trends don't always coralate. How many of the top selling mystery books had a cat on them? Did text only covers outperform illustrated covers? Is shabby chic making a comback? Are all your competing books blue? Should you lean blue to fit in or maybe you need thing red to stand out.
You need to place yourself in the readers shoes, see what they see. What is true in writing is true in sales, design, and publishing of books - context is everything.
Here's a link to nice piece on covers geared to indie authors.:
"Dedicated readers of genres like fantasy, romance, or mystery are used to books of that genre having some visually recognizable qualities. To get a sense of what other books look like it’s helpful to visit a library, bookstore, or online retailer and find genre comp titles for your book. Take notes on what the covers look like, and what similarities there are between the covers. Look at the colors, fonts, and images that authors use. You’ll probably find that a fantasy novel is going to have a different visual look than a romance novel, or poetry collection, or a book of literary fiction. Having a genre-aligned cover will help readers find your book."

I've just finished my first novel and am looking for ways to market it. A friend of mine mentioned NetGalley, but I've only ever used it as a reader. Do you know anything about how writers use it?
Thanks!
Ooh, we love NetGalley! I (Pamela) have been a long-time NetGalley user on the reader side, but it definitely has a lot to offer indie authors, too, not just trad published ones.
Check out this post in the Reading Room for the Pros and Cons of NetGalley if you're a self-published author.

My author marketing tips
In my last blog I shared my writing tips. This week the focus is on marketing. Let me start by saying that what works for some doesn’t work for others. It’s subjective, but you will sense if the following advice is relevant to you. But one tip I highly recommend is check your stats! It may be your newsletter or your website, but you won’t grow your readership if your stats are telling you what…

The Weirdest Book Marketing Campaign Ever
I got a strange e-mail the other day from someone claiming to have a breaking news story about a book that stopped a school shooting. If that wasn’t odd enough, the book was about “How to be a Soft Boi,” which was a term I wasn’t even familiar with. The whole thing was so weird that I just had to look into it, and was a little baffled by what I found. Authors these days will tell you writing the…
