A date among books | Poe x reader fanfic | SFW |
fem!reader, I'll be making some more gender neutral fics when I have time but fem is easier for me to write at the moment. I don't think there are any trigger warnings but please let me know if there are any in the comments and I will edit it :)

Your heart fluttered with anticipation as you entered the book store on a brisk autumn morning. The scent of the old pages mixed with the warmth of the dim yellow lights was a rather relaxing and safe feeling atmosphere to spend a few hours away from the chilly morning air. Your eyes swept across the reams of shelves filled with a variety of hardbacks and first editions, eagerly wanting to carry them all home so you could learn of their endings and cliff hangers.
At the back of the store, Poe stood eyeing up one of the hardbacks. As you made yourself travel further into his direction you couldn't help but notice that the book he was looking at seemed rather familiar.
"Hey, are you ok Ed? Found an interesting rival among the shelves?" you giggled and leant on his arm as you were too short to reach the top of his shoulders.
"I'm fine my love, just a little surprised that's all" he whispered as he pulled out the red hardback with gold trimmings.
"Isn't that one of yours-"
"Shhhhhh don't bring attention to it! I'd prefer to remain in the shadows and not have any sort of interest paid to me, only my work - unless it's you of course"
"I'm going to buy it then" and with that you snatched it from the shelf before Poe could even think about a response. He quietly sped down the corridor and pulled on your coat to prevent you from making it to the front desk.
"But why? You have a copy of this one - I know because I gave it you for your birthday. Why spend your money on something you have already?" He tilted his head in confusion.
"Because I want to get this one signed by the author himself" you grinned, making Poe blush and babble.
"W-what?! No I can give you another copy and sign it for you at home without it costing you anything, it would be exactly the same as this edition with the same covering..."
"I know you could very easily give me one and it's lovely that you are so willing to do that for me, but I love buying books from book stores, besides it helps keep them open as well as you earning a little from it I'm sure." Poe couldn't help but smile, keeping his eyes hidden by his fringe.
You walked up to the cashier and placed the book down on the counter, out of the corner of your eye you noticed Poe looking down and shuffling his feet - he seemed nervous for some reason.
"Ah! Great choice! A fine book for a fine lady - I have always said that you can tell the kind of person someone is by the books that they read. I'd love to meet the author and get a copy signed one day" the cashier laughed and wrapped the book up in brown paper to protect it.
"I'm sure my boyfriend would be able to manage that, right Ed?" both men were speechless. You looked at Poe and fluttered your eyelashes at him, pleading silently. There was no way he was able to say no to you, especially with those eyes. The cashier on the other hand was absolutely losing his mind, constantly asking questions. You slowly and gently laced you hand into Poe's left one, allowing him the ability to use his dominant hand to sign the book.
"Anything for you darling" Poe signed and took his fancy fountain pen from the pocket on the inside of his jacket. The cashier explained that he always kept his copy of this book with him at work in case he was ever blessed with the gifted and talented Edgar Allan Poe and today was that special day. Poe elegantly slid the ink drenched pen over the sepia pages, being careful not to smudge it.
"Keep the book open for a minute or so to let the ink dry, it would be a shame to ruin such a rare occasion" he smiled and handed the book back to the cashier. You picked up your copy and was lead out of the book store by your very handsome and talented boyfriend.
"Look babe, you can attempt to be mad at me all you want but deep down you secretly enjoyed the little bit of attention and praise" you nudged.
"I'd much prefer it from my girlfriend though" he pouted.
You pulled his tie so his ear was brushing against your lips.
"Oh babe, wait until we get home" the warmth from your breath in partnership with your suggestive words made tingles spread across the whole of Poe's body. It's not that he underestimates your power of winning him over, it plays as a reminder to him that he is lucky enough to be able to call you his own.

7 am, the beach is grey and chilly and the water on my feet feels like a balm after your words screeched.
8 am, the the fancy coffee doesn't feel so overpriced anymore and I thank the plastic that I can tap tap tap away, and one that I would, if I hadn't studied economics and didn't understand how credit worked.
9 am, I am writing paper napkin poetry with a borrowed pen from the cute guy across the table. He was leaving but let me have the pen. Kindness exists.
10 am, I am at the book sale. There's nobody else. Just me and a thousand books in a room. The dream.
11 am, I come home with bags full of fruit and arms full of books. I crash. I am content. I conquered this weekend.

Something that the world needs more of is blind books and book dates. Books whose cover is, well, cover and there is a small description on the front. As well as dates that take you to the book store instead of the movies because you get to talk and learn so much more about each other.
