One thing i have to appreciate abt crossroads of destiny despite the heartbreak i experience every time i watch that episode, is how well done the last fight is.

The effortless teamwork between Aang and Katara, bc at this point they've been in enough battles together they don't even need to glance at each other. How quickly everything happened after Zuko's entrance. How Zuko's focus shifts from Azula to Aang, and Aang immediately notices something is up, he gasps bc he knows what's about to come. Zuko fires at Aang and Aang immediately reacts because he connected the dots that quick. Azula not even hesitating and instantly focusing on Katara while Zuko unleashes his anger onto Aang.

Idk that particular sequence is just the crème de la crème of unspoken dialogue and storytelling go argue with the wall.

I’ve been thinking about jetko again the last couple days, hear me out:

so what if jet never saw iron reheat his tea and developed a different kind of obsession with zuko.

he survives laogai lake, joins the gaang after season 2 and when zuko decides to follow suit in season 3 they have an emotional little reunion with the gaang (specifically sokka) absolutely flabbergasted like

they know each other??? they like each other?? ROMANTICALLY???

and the story goes on as we know it with the only addition of zuko having a hot boyfriend and them annoying everyone (sokka) with their constant smooching thank you for coming to my ted talk.

ykw would've made s02 of atla even better? if jet didn't immediately find out that zuko is a firebender and for the majority of the season they're really close best friends only for jet to find out the truth about zuko in the worst possible way imaginable (i.e. when zuko sided with azula in the crossroads of destiny).

there obv IS a prevalent and aggravating trend of stories having an antagonist who correctly identifies a flaw in society and aims to fix it but also commits atrocities along the way that the narrative claims to undermine the entire goal and then when the hero defeats them it is in the name of the status quo - but people sometimes point to legend of korra as an example of this which is so annoying bc like man how can you not understand a show written for children. every single season ends with korra defeating the villains and then saying "they had some points tho!" and then changing the status quo to address the flaw the villain identified

HOWEVER #the consistent inconsistency the serialized adventures that tell super interesting stories but regularly contradict #each other and retcon half the original canon #the writers constantly trying to recreate the original status quo but just fucking it up even more…#i understand where people are coming from but the writers are EXTREMELY american. these are late 70s kids who grew up with the peak of #the american comic industry. lloyd’s a comic book character #the hagemans specifically pointed to their childhood storytelling with their action figures as influencing how they wrote the show and it #shows.#this isn’t like a callout or anything avshdjd #it’s just interesting to me. as someone who’s been collecting that era of comics (right around when the big 2 were rolling out secret wars #and crisis on infinite earths and finally making superhero stories coherent #it’s very clear how this is the kind of media they were exposed to and internalized #ninjago is very reflective of the storytelling strategies of late 80s and early 90s comics and that’s cool.#*especially later seasons of ninjago

My little cousin (15) finished season 2 of atla, here are her opinions of the characters after the s2 finale

Aang: "adorable and he better not be fucking dead"

Katara: "i hope she gets vengeance in season 3." Me: "vengeance on who?" Her: "the world."

Sokka: "he needs a girlfriend, every girl he's met has either died or left him... are you sure he's not into guys at all?" Me: "the fandom thinks so." Her: "they're right."

Toph: "she reminds me of a feral little dog most of the time"

Zuko: "get that traitor out of my face"

Azula: "if i speak."

Uncle iroh: "if he needs to die for zuko to finally get some character development so fucking be it"

Mai: "knife wife"

Ty Lee: "she's so me coded"

Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors: *hums who run the world girls by Beyoncé*

Jet: "dead. at least i think."

The Earthking: "oh that loser"

Long Feng: "who?" *gets shown a picture* "imagine being half bald and losing your whole army to a teenage girl"

i am begging every good omens fan that hasn’t read the book to please pick it up. it is so fucking good.

is it an exact mirror of the show? not exactly. but if you enjoy the show i cannot imagine that you’d dislike the book.

there’s so many little tidbits and scenes that aren’t in the show/are more fleshed out in the book (eg the paintball scene is way longer and way funnier in the book)

and i know some people struggle with books but the full cast audio recording exists! and it’s so good! i promise!
