Call ahead because the food takes a long time. I ordered bolani and it took 40 minutes. Crazy. They had a few takeout orders but didn’t seem that busy. The food is made from scratch. They even make their own Afghan style bread (thin flatbread). The menu includes several kinds of bolani, kabobs, sabzi, mantoo (dumplings), rice, desserts, and beverages.

Squash Bolani ($14.99): They’re known for their squash Bolani and for good reason. I don’t know how they get the flatbread (like a super thin pancake) so thin and still fill it with pureed butternut squash and onions. The flatbread is golden and crispy yet chewy. They cook it on a big griddle and top it with weights. It’s a marvelous creation. Even better, they made the filling spicy for me and served it with plain yogurt and a zesty cilantro sauce. One order includes a dozen pieces. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Service was very kind. I was welcomed and he even gave me a bread for free since it was my first visit. I gave the bread to my father. The restaurant is small and a bit cramped but warm and welcoming. It’s like going to someone’s kitchen. Smells amazing there too.

My county library system is one of the busiest in the country and the put on all sorts of cool classes. This month I took one about growing microgreens and last month I took classes on making foccacia and bolani (stuffed Afghan flatbread). I love my library and yes, it is that cool.

AMAZING!!! OH those look delicious, I hope they tasted as good as they looked! What a cool library, I love hearing about libraries being places of education :D

Thanksgiving Potluck

Soap: Shepherd’s pie. Real shepherd's pie made with lamb. And Scotch eggs. He knows they’re generally easier for most people to try without a fight. Plus, everyone loves them.

Ghost: Nothing, he doesn’t even want to show up. He is dragged there by Price.

Rodolfo: Handmade tamales. He learned from his mom how to make them. There’s never any leftovers.

Alejandro: just sticks his name on whatever Rodolfo brings and booze. He helps Rodolfo cook, anyway.

Price: the turkey. He and Gaz stand outside all day and grill it.

Gaz: Mashed potatoes and sweet potato casserole. He puts MSG in the mashed potatoes to make sure everyone raves about it.

Graves: Burnt rolls. No, but for real, he’s southern so probably greens or cornbread stuffing. They’re actually fairly good but no one is gonna tell him that.

Shephard: Was not invited.

Valeria: More alcohol, but also orders a bunch of pastries from a bakery. Says it’s because she’s too lazy, but it’s secretly because she knows the money helps them stay afloat.

Farah: A different dish every year, but she always brings Bolani. She likes to share her culture with them all.

Alex: Green bean casserole and a ham. (Always picks up a turkey breast from a place that is certified Halal for Farah, he doesn’t quite trust Price’s.) 

Laswell: Her wife makes pumpkin pie (also halal for Farah because she loves it) and she makes cocktails.

I think I mentioned this about a month and a half ago, but between September 18 and October 31, my goal was to try as many new things as possible. Here are the highlights:

Made it to the top of a 5.10a (rock climbing)

Experimented with Middle Eastern flavors in the form of za'tar, khobez, and bolani

Made 9 new recipes

Tried cooking with miso, za'tar, five spice, buckwheat, fresh pumpkin, and sriracha

Stamped a moon cake, made an arepa, and shaped fresh pasta (yes, a lot of these are food)

Witnessed an annular solar eclipse

Went to a district council meeting and a new library

Overall, I did or tried 33 new things in 44 days. I feel like that's a lot! I think this might just have to be my new year's resolution for 2024 too. So if you're looking for a fun goal, may I suggest trying new things?

She makes friends with a few other kids from the village and they go on wacky adventures together!!

Not a huge fan of Polish food, that one (except for bilberry pierogis her friend's dad makes); too little spice for her!!  Loves to argue about this with her friend. Also she'll kill for good mantu and bolani. She loves to explore and wander, probably dissappearing for hours on end because she found a new forest path and simply NEEDS to see where it leads!!!!, while her parents debate hotly whether or not to call the police and report her going missing (then Tah opens the door, a huge grin on her face becuase she saw a deer up close!! just before the police or something comes with full alarm which in hindsight was kinda funny) There's a homeless cat who kinda wanders around the area whom she befriends also. Prefers to stick to unisex clothes most of the time. Definitely gets them from secondhand.
