Know Thine Enemy - Dabi: 349-352, Part One
Before we begin, I have to jump ahead a little bit because there's something I want to get off my chest about this post:
~✨I WAS RIGHT!!!✨~🎺🎺🎺🎖️ Gold star for me!!!
I'm the best. I'm the shit. I'm a genius. I called that back in April of '21 and in April of '22 it winds up being canon.
Hori, do you read the blog? Actually, wait, don't tell me, just at some point have an Avengers-style Schwarma scene with people eating barbeque. The real fans will know.
Now that I've collected my fake internet award that I gave to myself, *ahem*...
BRAVO FOR DABI SOMEHOW MANAGING TO TOP HIS PERFORMANCE YET AGAIN!
His final descent into madness is JAW DROPPING, visually. This full transformation took two chapters in reader-time, but takes place in canon real time as mere seconds. Eventually he doesn't even look human anymore. I could not help but awe at it for a while.
He begins the fight continuing to fester in his hate for his dad - from his perspective Endeavor once again failed to show up for him because there are bigger fish to fry. Worse, dad sent the replacement to clean up the mess. It feels cruel, disgusting to him, and all he'll keep squashing every last obstacle in his way to get what he wants. If he can't kill Endeavor himself, he'll settle for second-best and at the very least take that away from him while taking out his resentment on the favorite son.
Dabi has clear reason to hate Shouto. Because of a genetic gamble and the evil way Endeavor went about raising his family, Toya was all but damned from the start. In Dabi's mind, he only mattered to Endeavor when he was still able to become the heir that Toya so badly wanted to be. His father, even after he'd lost him though, hadn't just buried him, he'd moved on and learned nothing.
That's all Endeavor's crime, though. Dabi hates Shouto for surviving the same trauma and thriving despite it - a fate also denied to him from the beginning.
I'm at the photo limit for one post, so I'll move on with the plot in part two, but I just want to shout out one more scene that was absolutely phenomenal in Dabi's waking scene. From the too-sweet hospital setting, to the uncanny-looking caretaker, to the mysterious voice over the computer telling him he was already effectively dead despite still feeling alive it was perfectly shot, nailed the pacing and atmosphere, and it was a fantastic piece of graphic novel art.
Then I realized that the entire thing was Dabi's worst nightmare specially crafted to make him easy for AFO to mold into the perfect hate machine.
Hori, write horror someday, I BEG OF YOU!!!
GOOD STUFF with Dabi as always! But now we get to focus on Shouto, and how his story fits into all this.

Praying someone in his life steps in and makes him take a multi month long break because dear lord. As someone who regularly runs themself into the ground working on their independent little projects, YOU HAVE TO TAKE A BREAK AT SOME POINT. Like you HAVE TO. It’s either you take the break on your own time or you’re body FORCES YOU TO. He probably keeps getting sick because he’s working so hard.

If Touya is really preparing a Prominence Burn, it could be because he’s got to the exact same low point as Toga.
Toga wanted love and acceptance from Izuku - instead she got her worst fear confirmed - and she feels like she’ll never be accepted, just like her parents told her.
While Touya’s worst fear was that he’s a weak, worthless failure, and he just got defeated by the “masterpiece” - in a way validating his father’s view of their relative potential.
Toga has her fingers on the trigger to unleash Sad Girl Parade. So Touya could be well on the verge of self-destruction too. Clearly both of these moves are limited (there is only so much Twice-blood left, there is only so much Touya’s body can take) to a one-off use.
They are both incredibly powerful but would be wasted in their current situations - Twice’s last parade on a far-off island could do only so much, Touya’s Prominence Burn at Kamino would maybe take a few red shirts in the process.
But these same moves could be game-changers in other battlefields.
In which case, the kids still need to reach Toga and Touya and save them by somehow changing their warped narratives on love and worth with compassion and empathy.

My first impression: I was immediately taken back by her character design. The green flaming hair, claws, and fangs? I was here for that!
My impression now: Burnin has jumped on the list of my favorite BNHA characters. She's just so fun! Even her bits in BNHA: Vigilantes made me happy. (If there is a BNHA spin-off you should take interest in, it's Vigilantes.) Out of all the fire users, she's my favorite.
Favorite thing about that character: As I mentioned, I really like Burnin's design. She's literally a hothead, but I love that for her. Also, her quirk. She's can take chunks of her hair flames and throw them at people or shape them into weapons. She can also fly! Like, out of all fire related quirks, that's probably the most creative.
Least favorite thing: I hate there's little backstory for her. If there's one sidekick I want some backstory on, it's her.
Favorite line/scene: In the OVA, the one with Mr. Smiley, Burnin has this scene where she got so mad she wanted to shoot Mr. Smiley with a rocket launcher. Meanwhile, Kido and Onima are just staring at her like "... maybe you should calm down". That had me laughing. 😆
Favorite interaction that character has with another: There may not be a lot of scenes, but I love her, Kido and Onima as a trio. Other then the whole rocket launcher scene, there's this bit in Vigilantes where they go "FLAMING SIDEKICKERS" and I just love that.
A character that I wish that character would interact with more: If you have followed me for long enough, you already know I need her and Miruko to interact. Not even just for shipping intent, but I would to see how those two would act around each other.
Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character: The only one that really comes to mind is that flame from Howl's Moving Castle, Calcifer. Oh, wait, every time I heard Burnin in dub, I think of Musa. I remember first hearing her and childhood memories came at me. I grew watching Winx Club, so I'm going to know Lisa Ortiz's voice. (So yeah, I also know she voiced Amy Rose, and in Winx Club, Lisa also voiced Icy, Digit, and Mitzi.)
A headcanon about that character: Okay, if you read my BurnBunny fics, you may notice that I sometimes describe Burnin's hair another color other than its usual yellow-green color. It's because I headcanon that depending on her mood or what she's doing, her hair flames changes colors. Think it would be neat if her hair could do that.
A song that reminds of that character: Fire Again by Ashnikko! Love that song, just give me Burnin vibes. I actually didn't really know it was a sing for Valorant, at first! Which is funny to me because Burnin looks like she belongs in a video game. Put her ass in Mortal Kombat! I want to see fatalities she can do!
An unpopular opinion about that character: Someone is gonna disagree but... Now, in 349, she mentions how Endeavor is good at his job, but she couldn't care less about his family affairs and I know some people gave her heat for that (hee hee), but personally, I'm on the same page. Whatever the Todorokis had going on isn't her business and at this time, defeating the villains is a priority. Of course, what Endeavor did to his family is terrible and I bet Burnin would also be horrified by it. The time to be involved in their family issues is just not appropriate. And it's not like the Todorokis want everyone to be involved in their business, fight their battles and whatnot. Storywise, it makes no sense for Burnin or anyone else to even be involved with the Todorokis dealing with Dabi. Personally, I just feel like some people wanted to hate on a female character.

that’s why I truly think this will be a story of Shoto being able to prove he’s a true hero and save Touya cause otherwise… what?
