Otter Creek Wilderness, designated by the Eastern Wilderness Act in 1975, was one of the first wilderness areas established in the state of West Virginia. While Dolly Sods and Spruce Knob are steadily loved to death by east-coast solitude seekers (try finding a parking spot on a fall weekend), the remote, verdant trails of Otter Creek remain comparatively quiet and uncrowded - one of those increasingly rare places in Mid-Atlantic region where true solitude is still possible. On Saturday, Blake and I had this special place - and its countless treasures - mostly to ourselves.

Year 1 - Moon 1 - Newleaf
A Gathering takes place!
The Gathering - a time for sharing news with the other clans and coming together under an oath of peace.
It was tradition, honored by generations of cats before her. As leader of SeedClan, Kestrelstar took great pride in the Order of the Flowers.
She led her clan to Rainbow Fields, gentle with the golden plant in her mouth. She dare not let it wilt, something she always worried about despite its fresh picking. Still, under the eyes of the full moon, knowing this was when StarClan was closest, she couldn't help but always feel a twinge of dutiful anxiety.
As her clan began to settle in, Kestrelstar took her place next to a familiar gray tom. His hazel eyes gleaned with interest, already eyeing her offering.
"Guh evenun, Kestrasta. Wha flowa ha yo brough?"
Watching as his own flower flopped about only made Kestrelstar's nose scrunch up. Amber eyes looked away, giving Chivestar only a flick of her ear in acknowledgement. With this movement, the clans lulled into a hushed murmur before falling silent, eyes fixed upon the four leaders before them.
Kestrelstar took a step forward. Gently, she placed the golden plant down, and looked out amongst the crowd of cats. "Under the honor of the full moon, I have the blessing of going first this moon-lit gathering. Today I have brought with me Goldenrod. Representing prosperity and good fortune, that is what I believe SeedClan has had this past moon. Softpaw has been continuing his training and completed the Trial of Training. Young Howlkit has also been growing stronger every day, and will be beginning his apprenticeship very soon."
Her gray paw rested atop the stem of the goldenrod, always worried the soft breeze might just blow it away. Amber eyes would give a firm nod as she completed her words, turning to the smiling Chivestar as if to say, finally you can speak.
Placing the purple plant down, the fellow clan leader could only chuckle softly before speaking up. "Today I have brought Borage," he announced, his voice stronger now that it wasn't muffled by leaves. "Borage is used to reawaken the heart, and grant courage. I will first say that we have a new warrior in our presence. Having completed the Trial of Herbs, we are proud to welcome Icywish as a full warrior of SorrelClan."
The clan cats erupted into cheers, chanting Icywish's name, others murmuring congratulations to the proud brown she-cat.
Chivestar continued. "Bumblepaw continues to work hard, and completed the Trial of Borders. SorrelClan continues to grow stronger, and I believe our hearts only continue to awaken and grow stronger with it." As he finished his words, Chivestar cast a lasting a glance at Kestrelstar, a knowing smile on his face before flicking his tail, turning away to look at the elderly gray tom who would be next.
"Ryestar," Chivestar murmured with a dip of his head.
The CoyoteClan leader sighed calmly under his breath, adjusting his aching bones as he gently placed his flower down before him. He had to clear his throat, voice raspy as he spoke up. "I have brought with me Violet today. It represents humility, peace even. That is what CoyoteClan has been. Rainpaw has completed her Trial of Training, and Havenbramble has made great strides in his visits recently to the other clans. I understand SorrelClan welcomed him as a guest for a few sunrises this moon, to great success." Ryestar turned to look at Chivestar expectantly.
"Certainly. Havenbramble is a welcomed cat in my clan, and myself and my clanmates were honored to have him," Chivestar replied, dipping his head.
A small scoff could be heard, causing Ryestar's ear to twitch. Dark blue eyes shifted to the small white she-cat next to him, the final leader to speak. Clearing his throat, Ryestar cast a gentle look upon her.
"Whisperstar, would you care to go next?"
"As the stars decree, yes?" the white she-cat snarled back. The other leaders would look to her with wide eyes, surprised by such an openly hostile tone at the sacred gathering. Whisperstar practically flung her flower to the ground, the sharp inhale of breath from Kestrelstar unable to be missed.
"This evening I have brought the Petunia. With it I bring anger, because one of my own was murdered," Whisperstar hissed.
Murdered?! Kestrelstar's eyes widened, staring in shock as hushed murmurs echoed through the gathering. Some CherryClan cats looked down with sorrow, while others bristled and carried the same anger their leader did.
"CherryClan had welcomed Bushclaw as a full warrior of their ranks, however... in the dead of night, something..." Whisperstar paused, bristling as she raised her head and her voice in turn. "Someone killed him. The claw marks along his throat are unmistakably from a cat. So I'm going to ask you all right now, who was it?!"
"You dare accuse us of such a thing?!" Ochreclaw shouted. The SorrelClan deputy's tail lashed.
Fireleopard would snarl as he sat amongst his fellow medicine cats. "Don't look at SorrelClan. Perhaps instead look at SeedClan. Perhaps they seek vengeance for their fallen mediator."
Fallendapple's eyes widened in shock, immediately backing away from the SorrelClan medicine cat. "Fireleopard?! You dare say such things? To instigate fighting under the light of the full moon is blasphemy!"
"Don't think just because you're a medicine cat that I won't claw your ears off, you old sack of bones!" Quillbeak had stepped forward, protectively standing in front of Fallendapple and forcing Firelopard to back up.
Kestrelstar began to feel the hair on her pelt rise. Her amber eyes saw the clouds beginning to gather overhead. The winds pushed old air into her ears, and the petals of her goldenrod would waver with their touch. She knew that this had to stop!
"It is unfair to accuse SeedClan and use our grief against us," Honeyeagle called out. He gently pushed Quillbeak back, looking to his clanmate with a sympathetic gaze.
Kestrelstar felt a sense of calm rush over her, thankful for her kindhearted deputy.
"Besides-" Honeyeagle raised his head with a narrowed gaze. "You didn't even talk about CoyoteClan."
Honeyeagle!!
That was not helpful. Yowls of fury echoed from Ryestar's cats, the elderly leader frowning as he cast an unapproving gaze at Kestrelstar. Her ears burned with embarrassment. Kestrelstar knew she'd have some stern words for Honeyeagle later.
A soft tail brushed against her back, causing the she-cat to look up. Chivestar smiled at her with those same gleaming eyes. "No hard feelings, Kestrelstar. I will be having words with my cats as well. I assure you that we are allies in this troublesome time."
While she hated to admit, she was grateful for Chivestar's patience and kind words. "Thank you," she murmured back, softly so that no cat heard.
Clouds rolled over the full moon, the peace having been broken. Kestrelstar knew they should take their leave before blood should dare be spilled. With a quick dip of her head, she said her goodbyes to Chivestar, only giving a quick glance to Ryestar and Whisperstar.
Amber eyes fell down upon the goldenrod she had brought. Prosperity. Growth. So much for that... Quickly, Kestrelstar shook her head. She mustn't forget the traditions of their ancestors. Before she took her leave, the dark gray tabby tenderly picked up her plant before any other leader could do the same to theirs, placing it softly within the Rainbow Bend. Soon the seeds will fall and spread through this field to create the array of so many colorful flowers. That beauty would never fade, not if Kestrelstar had anything to say about it.
"SeedClan, we are leaving," Kestrelstar called.
With but a flick of her tail, her clan went silent, eyes following her as she padded through the crowd of cats. Mixed expressions greeted her, but one by one the clan followed their leader.
The moon remained clouded, the stars unreadable in the night sky.

[CM] - Flowering Plants 1
More lexicon posts, woohoo! Today I've got some flowering plants. This isn't the full list, but it's the ones I've assigned words so far, so it'll have to do until I work on more.
New york aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii) - Palefi Derived from base Clanmew palifuh* (purple) and pfefi* (fluff petal). Tall, thin-stemmed plant with narrow leaves and pale purple flowers. Grows on marshland borders and may be found in nutritionally poor soil. Attractive to butterflies, moths, and bees!
Bog aster (Oclemena nemoralis) - Oskfi Derived from palefi and osk* (white). Very similar to palefi, but a little smaller and with pale, pink-or-white flowers. Found in wetlands and on shores.
Bog goldenrod (Solidago uliginosa) - Morree Derived from waymor* (taller than it is wide) and rreen* (golden). Very tall with a thin, reddish stem and fluffy golden flowers that bloom in late summer. Grows in wetlands and on shores. Resistant to deer and attractive to butterflies.
Water hemlock (Cicuta maculata) - Mwrai Branched plant with clusters of tiny white flowers and deeply-toothed leaves. Grows in marshes and on shores. Mwrai is highly toxic! Consumption results in tremors, extreme pain, fever, and death. Mwrai is especially dangerous due to its resemblance to the herbs boneset and valerian.
Blueflag iris (Iris versicolor) - Pail Derived from palifuh* (purple) and pai* (petal). Thick-leaved plant with fancy blue-to-purple flowers. Found in marshes, fields, and on shores. Though beautiful, pail is irritating when handled, and ingestion results in stomach upset.
Fragrant water-lily (Nymphea odorata) - Ssoskai Derived from osk* (white), pai* (petal), and yasschoop* (sense of smell). Leaves are wide and float on the water; flowers are ornate, white with a yellow center, and bloom from morning til noon during warm months. Ssoskai are found exclusively on the lake. Flowers carry a sweet scent that may be detected hundreds of yards away!
Wild sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis) - Sikibow Cat-sized plant with tiny white flowers in spherical clusters; these flowers develop into dark berries in mid-summer. Grows in forest understories. Browsed by deer and moose, while the berries are consumed by foxes and chipmunks.
Sheep laurel (Kalmia angustifolia) - Besskaf Derived from beka* (pink), peske* (clusters of flowers), and mwssaf* (poisonous). Shrub with thick, leathery leaves and circular pink flowers. Grows in wetlands, forests, and on shores. Besskaf is highly toxic to cats and also exudes chemicals that inhibit other plants, particularly conifers.
Northern St. John's-wort (Hypericum boreale) - Mwurfs Leafy, shrubby plant with fancy yellow flowers. Found in wetlands, on shores, and in shallow lake water. Mwurfs is toxic - contact may result in boils and irritation, while consumption leads to photosensitivity, drooling, and depression.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense) - Shuf Tiny spreading plant with little pink-or-red flowers. Grows in fields and on shores. Shuf is an herb that aids skin inflammation and (possibly) arthritis! It's also consumed by numerous animals.

Goldenrods
It’s nowhere near the fall hayfever season, but I thought I’d PSA anyway.
Hayfever is caused by RAGWEED (Ambrosia artemisiifolia and Ambrosia trifida where I live).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOT. Goldenrod (Solidago, Oligoneuron, Euthamia). It is impossible for goldenrods to even cause hayfever since their pollen isn’t released to the wind. Goldenrods are beautiful, with some edible parts, some medicinal properties, and middle of summer through fall pollenators love them.
Non-exhaustive list of goldenrods
Euthamia graminifolia (Flat-top goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Oligoneuron rigida (Stiff goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago bicolor (Silverrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago caesia (Blue-stem goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago canadensis (Canada goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago flexicaulis (Zigzag goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago juncea (Early goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago missouriensis (Prairie goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago multiradiata (Alpine goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago nemoralis (Gray goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago odora (Anise-scented goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago ohiensis (Ohio goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago patula (Rough-leaf goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago ptarmicoides (Upland white aster):
Tumblr media
Solidago rugosa (Wrinkleleaf goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago simplex (Spike goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago speciosa (Showy goldenrod):
Tumblr media
Solidago uliginosa (Bog goldenrod):
Tumblr media
The only drawback is that many goldenrod species spread a lot and quickly if you don’t keep on top of those rhizomes. But if you need to fill a space in a relatively short period of time, why not try some in your garden? They’ll grow up green through spring and summer and put on a show in the fall (earlier depending on the species)!

Male Fern: The male fern (aka dead man’s fist) thrives in dry areas. It can be used to treat nosebleeds and wounds.
Cattail: The cattail (aka typha) can produce two types of dower spikes, one male and one female. They can be woven into mats, baskets, or be used as torches.
Crooked-Stemmed Aster: The crooked-stemmed aster (aka symphytorichum prenanthoides) prefers variations of sun exposure and usually does well in wooded areas. They have been used to treat weak skin, pain, fevers, and diarrhea.
Virginia Smartweed: The Virginia smartweed (aka polygonum virginanum) is an aquatic perennial. They have been used for diarrhea, bleeding, and the common cold.
Wild Indigo: Wild indigo (aka baptisia tinctoria) can be used as an asparagus substitute. It can act as a natural repellent against mosquitos, snakes, and ticks.
White Snakeroot: White snakeroot (aka eupatorium rugosum) caused milk sickness in the 1800s for settlers moving to the Midwest. The root tea is used for kidney stones and fever treatment.
Blue-Stemmed Goldenrod: The blue-stemmed goldenrod (aka solidago caesia) can spread aggressively in an area. They provide food and habitat for many birds and small animals.
Attendance:
“This was thanks to the chalk, which the artist used to make his paints go further, to thicken them so that they stood off the canvas, and to make glazing layers more transparent — because it has a low refractive index, chalk is almost completely translucent in oils.” (pg. 57)
I found this interesting because I never knew chalk was translucent in oils. I always thought of chalk as something you use on the playground as a kid where you would draw hop scotch, or drop it on the pavement and watch it break and get upset. This passage made me think of when I used to work as a camp counselor and drew a 160 tile hop scotch for the children I was looking after. I did not know that it is used to thicken paints and make glazing layers more transparent.

His quiet was noticed.
It was quick, maybe - lost among the spell she cast and the concentration needed to keep it alight, the stems and thorns glittering yellow in the near darkness. She had intended roses, something flattering and purposeful, showy and enticing with secrets 'neath their foliage - him.
But his quiet, the inhale that had broadened his chest and pressed them closer together... it was not wholly desire nor surprise. The actor was swift to cover up the mistake in his lines. It would not hide his stutter, the tightness in his shoulders and the stillness beneath her body.
What had intended to be roses turned into some false flower upon her uncertainty, not true and not existing. The petals were shy and closed, curled into each other, as if abruptly unsure of themselves and why they had been conjured. Even the leaves no longer held their lilted edge, the spikes smoothed and hidden away. His demeanor had shifted for a moment, and so had hers in reply.
The rose had been meant for him. This, too, maybe fit - her and him both, curling both away and towards each other in body but not in spirit. This had not been the first time she had sought company but avoided eye contact.
It seemed he was no stranger to it, either.
She had reached up, one hand skimming around the back of his neck to cradle his skull, silky locks filtering between her fingers. Her blue irises had been lidded, peering down at him at a height only gifted by their situation, and parted thin lips to quip back.
The tilt of his hips canted her forward, the friction of fabric separating them from truly touching. The goldenrod mana shattered, vines and flowers disappearing into sparks of light like fireworks in the sky.
Her hair brushed his cheeks and their lips met, not in a kiss but in something more intimate. Her words had caught in her throat, muddled by surprise and the sensation between her thighs. Alta's eyelashes fluttered as she fought to grasp her sandy constitution, of the insistence that this came only if he were to be truthful and earnest.
She had never been one to simply rely on physical desires. She shared beds with those she cared for and no less, even if their affection was cloudy and uncertain, nameless and coy. Zelos had stirred something in her heart, and that was the only reason the insistence pressing into the nightgown trapped betwixt them was causing something more to stir in her belly.
Her touch had been thoughtful, reverent, once gazing at him as one would look into a crystal ball: begging, wishing for clarity, for transparency, for truth. The hand at the back of his neck tightened, cropped nails biting into the skin just so.
She recollected the sands of herself, of the hourglass he had attempted to crack. It settled again, almost as if he had reset it entirely to zero: few grains of grit remained at the top, the remains of her patience for him weighing thin.
"I don't think healing you there would - ... be as pleasant as you believe," she breathed, words against his lips, hot breath mingling with his own. "But - ... should you insist, I'll indulge. Mayhaps you would be more forthright for it."
She shifted. Her lips barely left his own, simply tilting her head to kiss him more thoroughly, an opening act for the show he seemed so keen to see.
Sunlight flecks of light curled down from his throat, the pinpricks finally touching his skin instead of coiling around in wait. The flowers budded; the leaves unraveled, and thorns of heated energy prick his skin at a leisurely speed. It was slow and loping, like a pace one might set to sight-see.
It spoke of her skill. It spoke of her patience, slowly recovering despite his attempt to detour, and it spoke of her own insistence. He would get what he wanted, but she would not spoonfeed it to him.
Golden light curled down his body like roses on a trellis, digging beneath his skin and the heat measured. The light illuminated the sheerness of her nightgown and the trail of hair he had before it disappeared entirely, the trail dipping between them with one final leaf appearing near his navel.
She waited. She shifted, the silk fabric sliding against his own purposefully. And then Alta kissed him again, nearly mirthful.
"Now," Alta asked, "do you still hurt?"

Actions Prompts
"Do you know the Language of Flowers, Legato?" Aurelius asks as the two walk idly through one of the many parks in Cotes after one of their regular meetings over tea. The human has been pausing to brush the tips of his fingers over the petals of various blooms, chosen seemingly at random as they meander down the path. Legato hums and tilts his head slightly, expression gone rueful.
"Only a very little and only since being here. My world has very little flora, only vast tracts of empty desert, so there was no reason to make a study of such a thing." He brushes a thumb over the embroidered flowers on his new coat's lapel. "I looked up the meaning of various blue flowers to choose something I liked for my coat but that is all."
He doesn't elaborate on what meaning he favored for the little blooms meticulously stitched into the fabric under his thumb and Aurelius doesn't ask. They fit the human as he wishes to be, whatever meaning he focus on.
"It can be as complex or simple as you wish it to be, depending on the combination of blooms one presents to another. I find it fascinating that humans have created an entire coded language out of the bounty of beauty left to them. For example," he waved his hand and a grouping of vaguely trumpet shaped flowers with large petals swayed their faces toward the two. "Petunias can be given to mean anger and resentment if given to someone with whom one has a quarrel. Or they can signify a calm and soothing presence. The color changes the meaning as well. Humans are very keen to create meanings from mundane things and then use those meanings to express themselves. They've made quite the art form of it."
"I wonder if Knives knows any of it..." Legato muses as he eyes the blooms they pass with a slightly more critical eye. "Mm. His brother seems more the type to know meanings, especially since he works in a flower shop." He huffs an amused little laugh and tilts his head.
"I wonder what he would do should I visit and request he help me make a bouquet." The human's lips twist into a scheming little smirk before he shakes his head and apparently the thought away. "I doubt he would appreciate that."
"He is the one you told me prefers the company of humans, yes? You have a rivalry with your Master's brother?" Aurelius tuts with amusement when the top of Legato's cheeks redden slightly, read far too easily by the angel. "Tsk. Holding such grudges with the relations of someone you hold so dear is unproductive." Aurelius scanned the ample blooms around them until, humming with satisfaction, he stepped off the path and carefully wove his way through the plants until he came to the ones he wanted.
"If he does understand flowers and you wish to 'bury the axe' as the humans say, perhaps send him some of these. Hyacinths, particularly blue ones, are known to represent peace. Perhaps that will help." He bent to another bush and plucked a long, plush grouping of tiny flowers, twirling the stem through finger and thumb a moment before turning to tuck it carefully in the human's vibrant hair. He noted Legato's sharp breath in and his twitch when Aurelius touches him but as he neither says anything nor shies away the angel doesn't comment.
"Goldenrod, known for growth, encouragement, and good luck. May its bright color be a balm in such times of stress." Legato's mild displeasure from mention of Knives' brother shifts to amused near exasperation as he runs careful fingers over the flower in his hair.
"I'm sure it will be just what I need to deal with Stampede," he says with a light huff and Aurelius smiles indulgently as they make their way back to the path. The sprig of goldenrod remains tucked in the human's hair for the rest of their walk.

This past January, I made a resolution to get my garden beds to 70 - 75% native plants. My, oh my, that was an ambitious goal. I probably need another year or two to reach that level of coverage. On the other hand, the native wildflower seeds I purchased in January have germinated and produced healthy, vigorous shoots (above). Today, I planted the spreading Jacob’s ladder (Polemonium reptans) in four different beds. I have spots prepared for the rest also, including hairy beardtongue (Penstemon hirsutus), blue-stemmed goldenrod (Solidago caesia), yellow pimpernel (Taenidia integerrima), and wild geranium (Geranium maculatum). The project is at least moving ahead; this coming September, I’ll buy or collect more seeds to plant before the first frost.

Mc!Zinc pact mark placement headcannons
Pride: Lucifer’s pact mark rests on the knuckles of Zinc’s right hand. The symbol is near/on the middle knuckle with feather-like flourishes on either side and is Royal Blue in color. (#4169e1)
Greed: Mammon’s pact mark wraps around the second joint of Zinc’s right side middle finger like a ring. The symbol is on the underside of the finger with a simple array of dots that rap all the way around and is Goldenrod in color. (#DAA520)
Envy: Leviathan’s pact mark rests above Zinc’s tailbone. When Zinc is in a form where his tail is out the symbol sits a few inches up from where it protrudes. The flourishes look like a snakes open mouth and are a Marmalade orange in color. (#D16002)
Wrath: Satan’s pact mark is on the back of Zinc’s left hand. The symbol is in the middle of his hand and the flourish looks like an open book that’s directly centered around the symbol. It is India Green in color. (#138808)
Lust: Asmodeus’s pact mark is on the underside of Zinc’s chin and is rather small. The symbol is slightly off center, closer to the back of the space near his neck with swirl like flourishes stemming from it that end off in a flower petal shape. It’s Azalea in color. (#c53d56)
Gluttony: Beelzebub’s pact mark sits over Zinc’s heart. The symbol is a few inches down from the collarbone with curved lines, hearts, and little diamond shaped flourishes. It’s Blood red in color. (#880808)
Sloth: Belphagor’s pact mark sits on the back of Zinc’s neck. The symbol is a few inches below the hairline with simple looking cloud flourishes and is Periwinkle in color. (#CCCCFF)
Other miscellaneous pact mark headcanons
The pact marks can shift their appearance to match the strength of the relationship between demon and pact holder. The stronger the relationship between demon and pact holder (platonic or otherwise) the more the mark grows out from the demon’s symbol.
Beel, Satan, and Levi’s pact marks are the most elaborate.
The purple in Belphie’s pact mark is constantly being mistaken as a bruise which is something Belphie has conflicting feelings about.
I might draw out what the pact marks look like at some point in the future but I just needed to get them down so my brain can move on to other things :)

If  a  fountain  could  jet  bouquets  of  chrome  yellow  in  dazzling arches  of chrysanthemum  fireworks,  that  would  be  Canada Goldenrod.  Each  three-foot stem is a geyser of tiny gold daisies, ladylike in miniature, exuberant en masse. Where  the  soil  is  damp enough,  they  stand  side  by  side  with  their  perfect counterpart, New  England  Asters.  Not  the  pale  domesticates  of  the  perennial border,  the  weak  sauce  of  lavender  or  sky  blue,  but  full-on  royal purple  that would  make  a  violet  shrink.  The  daisylike  fringe  of purple  petals  surrounds  a disc  as  bright  as  the  sun  at  high  noon,  a  golden-orange  pool,  just  a  tantalizing shade  darker  than  the surrounding  goldenrod.  Alone,  each  is  a  botanical superlative. Together, the visual effect is stunning. Purple and gold, the heraldic colors  of  the  king  and  queen  of  the  meadow,  a  regal  procession in complementary colors. I just wanted to know why.

I think season supremacists have overrated points of view. Winter, spring, summer, and fall each have beautiful parts to them as well as uncomfortable parts. But being outside during any of them is so beautiful, raw, and enjoyable. What a wonderful job God did on seasons.
Like. There's breeze. And sometimes it's wet and sometimes it's dry. And the clouds change. And goodness have you ever paid attention to how the trees change? Like, really paid attention? It's a testament to God's creativity and a wonderful lesson in growth.
To watch the buds go from dapper red buttons on skeletal limbs to sails of vibrant green, deepening and fluttering gaily in summer winds, only to blush scarlet and fall to the ground, leaving the skeletal guardian forlorn and vigilant once more? It's like watching our own lives unfold in patterns so beautiful and terrible and raw and wonderful.
And the plants that grow in a reckless field. Watching the first breaths of green peak through last year's golden-gray carpet, the delicate leaves of chickweed and mustards and henbit and dandelion popping up while it's still cold, to be replaced by bolder daffodils and then brilliant dancing irises and quaint yarrow and demure clover, and the wild roses perfume the air above where the violets had died, then you see the day lilies and the echinacea and the sweet blue cornflowers that reach up with spindly hands, and then the fields explode into the brilliance of goldenrod dotted with tiny, tender white asters, and then the rosehips explode from reddening rose cane and the tender stems of queen ann's lace become woody scepters, and the grass goes brown again? Just like different responsibilities and people have been placed in our lives at just the right time so that the field of our lives may be colorful and continually nourished and bearing fruit.
And through it all, the currents of breezes makes you feel alive, like you could fly, like you could die tomorrow or live forever, and it caresses the earth and then it strikes it in the next breath, ripening the berries to black sweetness and shriveling the leaves to brilliant litter, kissing the rain of the late spring shower and driving the sleet in mid winter, blowing your hair in your face and out, keeping you cool on the hottest summer days, winding its way through trees and up hills, a messenger of how the world carries on. It reminds me of the Holy Spirit who continues His sanctifying work in us, continuing to refine us by bolstering us in the Word and convicting us of our sin, holding us tight moment to moment and keeping our lives moving forward on the path God has laid out for us: the path that leads us closer to Him.
To say one season is better than another is foolish... for each season is beautifully a part of the others and yet unique in its own way. You can hate the bitter cold... despise the sweat of the beating sun... but there is beauty in every season and what's important is we don't forget that. Every season has a purpose and every season always holds in it the potential to praise God (since, after all, we are to praise Him regardless of circumstance).
Stay present and stay thankful throughout all seasons. And remember that seasons in a year aren't the only seasons worth making the most of.
