So uh, this is one of those things I missed apparently. That top picture is back from September, 2021 and I'm sorry to say I do not have a picture of what it was before that. Some kind of tool like a fro, where those holes were actually riveted together, around a haft, and the blade was much shorter and thicker.
Honestly I liked the curve, but something about it just, wasn't what I was going for. It got shelved two years because I just was not feeling it. I would carry it around, pick it up and swing it, stare at it on the rack with the rest of my swords, and yesterday I realized something had to change.
The picture below was from visiting the makerspace today and trying a little push and pull. That spot right above the guard is thinner than I wanted it to be, but there was only so much I could do when the blade already had a hole in it. Something about it does make more sense to me now, so it will be on to grinding and finishing.

Writing Research - Knife
The purpose of this research post is to be helpful, more importantly educational. I certainly don’t condone the use of this knowledge for malevolent reasons. I want to help writers with their stories and I figured this would make their search for such information easier.
This is great for the stories that take place in ancient times, apocalyptic setting, and/or contain characters that are blacksmiths, bladesmiths, survivalist, etc. This information would help to make them believable. For example, what if they are teaching another character how to make a knife? Or how to defend against an attacker with a knife? Or how to treat a knife wound?
This post is meant to make a writer’s life a little easier by giving them a starting point. It doesn’t contain EVERY information about knives, but if you know what you’re looking for than I encourage you to look it up.

Coffin-handle bowie knife I made for my friend @lukenop
blade hand forged from a piece of an old leaf spring, copper for the guard, and black walnut for the handle. I went for a frontier/old west kinda style, something a mountain man or cowboy might've used

Introduction to Bladesmithing - (Monday, Jan 23 & Tuesday, Jan 24 2023 6pm -9pm)
Led By Adlai Stein
Our most popular workshop is now a two night workshop - you asked and we listened!
Learn to make your own EDC knife in this two-night workshop. Workshops are held on the Monday and Tuesday following during the same hours.
You will get started by learning about the tools such as the forge, tongs & hammer as you use them to create your blade shape. Once you have a nicely shaped edge for your knife we will show you how to grind and harden the blade. You will also learn how to make a para-cord wrapped handle. This class is a great way to get the feel of a hammer and what it takes to make a blade.
We are going to be working with temperatures in excess of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit and tools like grinders that could be dangerous if your not cautious. Please wear natural fiber clothing and closed toed shoes. Also bring safety glasses if you have them or you may use ours.
Must give a minimum of 48 hours cancellation notice in order to receive a refund, minus a 5% fee
Age 16 and up if interested under 16 please contact [email protected] for private instruction information.
To help avoid Covid-19 we will be wiping down the tools
Safety is a priority in our shop, we reserve to the right to end a class at anytime without refund if safety rules are not being followed.
