There's just something about deserts in fiction that I really love. I think it's the concept of the desert itself being largely flat and/or unremarkable with no distinguishing features other than the cliffs or the gaping canyon.
It's the mystery of when you get out there in the dunes, and uncover towering ancient ruins beneath the sand and have to explore it before the winds change and bury them again. Or the skeleton of a giant creature originally thought to be mere myth.
It's the desperation of the characters traveling in this place and their need to escape the burning rays of the sun, or the massive sandstorm blocking out the sun, or the monster burrowing in the sand, or the scavengers hellbent on taking all their valuables.
My four best examples are Andromeda's Elaaden, Star Wars' Tatooine (the franchise will never escape that place and I'm GLAD), The Hissing Wastes in Inquisition, and the Black Desert from, well, Black Desert.
