I love killdeer so much. Truly. However they are some of the dumbest creatures on the planet someone help them
#THE ROAD IS A BAD NESTING PLACE YOURE SUPPOSED TO RUN AWAY WHEN FACED WITH A GIANT DOG#its like. 3 adults and 4 little fuzzy babies. just in the road! all day! huddling up in one of the potholes#thankfully Jasons prey drive is not for birds? he wants to chase them yes but if he catches up he just kinds stops#like he doesnt know what to do#small mammals he wants to kill tho 😬 when he was younger that 100% included tiny dogs but hes gotten over that thankfully#disclaimer: i did not willingly test the small dog thing people just wouldnt stop bringing their 7lb toy dogs to the big dog side#even when i was like HEY UH my dog is not good with small dogs!! and they just rolled their eyes while i went to go leash him#but i didnt always see them come in so a few times suddenly theres this teacup poodle yapping at my legs#and jason is just. fine? confused but not acting like he just saw a rabbit#and hes been good with little dogs since tho i still keep a very close eye on him#idk what id do if anything happened what do you even say in that situation?#anyway not like we go to the park more than a few times a year since no one can actually tell if their dog is dog friendly or not 🙃#but like!!! they have separated areas for big and small dogs for a reason!!!#that got very off topic im just glad his crazy (for a collie) prey drive when he was younger seems to be mellowing out#maybe someday we can revisit herding and he will not try to nip the sheep 🙃🙃🙃🙃#anyway. please. the killdeer. they are so sweet but so dumb

Deer and jackdaws.
The birds feed on ticks from the deer, and also assist in removing velvet from growing antlers.

Gouache painting of long-tailed tits for the upcoming book about my local nature reserve.
Long-tailed tits make stretchy nests from a base of moss and spider silk. On the outside they’re covered in lichen for camouflage and inside are lined with feathers for cosiness!

I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it
Tumblr media
they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and musical instruments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them

i was always bothered by the lack of like official concept art for kim kitsuragi that's available. there's like, three total pictures? which made no sense to me given how he's a main character, he's there with you for most of the game, how can this be all of it. where's the early iterations. alternate designs. turns out it's because they apparently drew him once and were like "oh this is perfect. we can't improve on this. we nailed it" and just moved on
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i once joked that given how little insight there is into his creation and how little concept art there was of him, he probably just appeared fully formed in the game one day. apparently i wasn't far off. his portrait is literally from pre-production just with colours slapped on it. "a slam dunk from the get-go". character of all fucking time

Crested caracara / caracara quebrantahuesos (Caracara cheriway), Pima County, Arizona.
The name caracara is probably imitative of the bird's call. The Spanish common name quebrantahuesos is literally bone breaker.
