Calling all Shadowhunters creators--it's time to dust off your notebooks, sketchbooks, laptops, drawing tablets, and other creative instruments.
Welcome to By the Angel Bingo!
What is By the Angel Bingo? By the Angel Bingo is a Shadowhunters-themed event where you request a grid of prompts in the layout of a bingo board. The goal is to fill the prompts until you get a traditional bingo (filling 3 or 5 in a row, column, or diagonally) or until you blackout your entire board!
Do I have to be a part of the Malec Discord Server to sign up? No, being a part of the Malec Discord Server Community is not required to be a part of this event, but it is highly encouraged if you’re looking for friends to bounce ideas off of, if you need help finding a beta reader, or if you’re just looking for Shadow Fam to hang out with.
What is the schedule?
Sign-ups open: February 1st
Sign-ups close: February 29th
Last day to request prompt changes: March 31st
Masterpost due by: September 30th
Have more questions? Join the Malec Discord Server or keep reading under the cut for official rules, minimum requirements, and other FAQs!
How will it work? On Thursday, February 1st, sign-ups will open for a bingo card. In your sign-up, you will be asked a few questions including what size bingo card you’d like (3x3 or 5x5). You will then receive a bingo card from one of the Mods to your preferred method of contact within 3-5 days. Sign-ups will remain open until Thursday, February 29th. From there, you’ll have until Monday, September 30, to complete what you can on your bingo card!
What if I don’t like my prompts? You may request 3 (for 3x3 cards) or 5 (for 5x5 cards) replacement prompts at one time. If you need more than 3-5 prompts replaced, you will be sent an entirely new card. This can only happen once. If you receive a new card, you can request 3-5 replacement prompts again for the last time. You can request changes to your board until March 31st, a month after sign-ups close.
Can I sign up if I’m under 18? Yes! Anyone is able to receive a bingo card, but you must be over the age of 18 to request NSFW prompts or submit NSFW fills. You also must be over the age of 16 to join the Malec Server.
Are there any content restrictions? This bingo is open to all creations; fic, art, gifs, videos, moodboards, playlists, cosplay, physical art, etc. All bingo fills must be Shadowhunters-related. Any ships/characters/ratings are permitted as long as they are properly tagged. RPF is not allowed for this event.
Am I required to get a bingo or blackout my card? Not at all! You can fill as little or as many prompts as you have the time/energy to complete. This is low to no stress. Low risk, high reward. HAVE FUN.
Can I combine prompts? Each prompt needs to be its own fill, but you can post a multi-chapter fic or art series with one prompt per chapter/piece.
What if I black out my entire card before the final posting date? Congrats! You did it! You can either be done OR ask for a second bingo card.
Minimum requirements:
Fic: 500 words
Digital/physical art: 1 piece
Photomanipulation: 1 piece
Gifsets: 2 gifs
Moodboards: 4 images
Video: 30 seconds
Playlists: 10 songs
Podfic: 500 words (with author’s permission)
Rules:
You must be over 18 to request NSFW prompts and submit NSFW fills. You have to be over 16 to join the Malec Server.
Any Shadowhunters-related ships/characters/ratings are permitted as long as they are tagged appropriately.
You may create works based off of the show, books, or movies, but no RPF is allowed.
You may request a 3x3 card (8 prompts) or a 5x5 card (24 prompts).
You may request 3 (for 3x3) or 5 (for 5x5) replacement prompts at one time.
If you need more than 3-5 prompts replaced, you will be sent an entirely new card.
This can only happen once. If you receive a new card, you can request 3-5 replacement prompts again for the last time.
You can request changes to your board until March 31st, a month after sign-ups close.
Each card has one “FREE SPACE” to be used as a wildcard where you can submit any creation that follows the rules of the event.
Each prompt needs to be its own completed fill, but you can post a multi-chapter fic or art series with one prompt per chapter/piece.
Each fill must be NEW during the bingo posting period. No past creations may be used as a fill.
Fills can be combined with other events (i.e. Femslash February, Any Fandom Bingo, Trope-specific bingos, etc.) only if the other event allows it and you meet the minimum requirements for both events.
Prompts can be interpreted as literally or figuratively as you like (I.e. A/B/O meaning a frat house, or falling to your knees in the sense of lust, despair, clumsiness, etc.) If you think it fits, it probably fits.
All bingo fills must be added to the AO3 collection. If posted on Tumblr/Twitter, the Malec Discord Server must be tagged (@malecdiscordserver/@MalecServer).
If you are participating in this bingo, you are not allowed to shame any ships/kinks/characters/content of any kind created by other participants. Failure to follow this rule may lead to a lifetime ban of Malec Discord Server-run events. We’re in this for a good time, not a dramatic time.

First Pride
Chapter 3 of cum non bellantis
Malec | Rated general | no warnings | Bingo Square: First Pride
Summary: Alec and Magnus enjoy the benefits of a telepathetic bond and Alicante has its first pride.
A/N: Takes place following chapter 3 of magicae bellantis, about a year after the events of vitae bellantis, so read both of those first!
This work was created for the Shadowhunters Pride Bingo presented by the Malec Discord Server. @malecdiscordserver
Read it on AO3 or below the cut.
Alec
“You are cheating,” Jace said, glaring at Alec although he was swaying slightly in place, which rather ruined the effect. “Both of you. I don’t know how you’re doing it, but it’s cheating.”
Alec raised a nonchalant eyebrow at him. “Perhaps Magnus and I are simply better at charades than you are.”
We kinda are cheating, though, Magnus observed in his head. I don’t think magical mental communication is permitted.
The rules don’t say it’s not allowed, Alec returned, hiding a smirk behind his glass. And you gotta admit it’s hilarious to watch them struggle to understand how we’re doing it.
The thread of amusement in the bond was answer enough, and Alec turned back to Jace, who was demanding another round.
“No cheating this time,” Jace told them, pointing at the two of them. “I’m warning you. I’ll tell Alec the word, and I’m activating a hearing rune this time to make sure you’re not whispering to each other.”
“Feel free,” Magnus said indifferently. “You won’t catch us cheating.”
Jace scowled and dragged Alec into the area which Clary had drawn specialised Soundless runes all over, so that he wouldn’t be overheard telling Alec what he had to act out. Not that it mattered; Magnus had a hotline into Alec’s head through the bond humming between them, and no ward they’d encountered yet had been able to separate them.
“We should make Alec act out something Magnus won’t know about,” Clary suggested, following them over. “Like… a Shadowhunter-only thing.”
“It’s not fair if Magnus doesn’t know what it is,” Alec protested.
“I don’t care, you two are already being unfair,” Jace replied, and dove into brainstorming with Clary.
(Magnus chuckled in the back of Alec’s mind, and Alec made sure to keep his face blank and calm while he laughed internally. Pranking Jace was so much fun.)
Three more rounds of charades later — all of which Magnus and Alec had won; Jace was growing increasingly frustrated and drunk, which wasn’t helping his acting skills — Clary finally called a halt. “I think we all know Magnus and Alec are better at this than we are.”
“Cheaters,” Jace mumbled, but acquiesced.
Should we tell them? Alec asked Magnus mentally. Or keep them guessing?
Jace’ll be furious, Magnus commented, though he wouldn’t be particularly upset about that.
Jace is drunk and already furious, Alec replied.
Magnus grinned. Then let’s tell them.
“My parabatai is a traitor,” Jace was mumbling. “I swear you’re cheating.”
“Calm down, Jace, I’m sure they’re not,” Clary said with a consoling pat to the back of his hand. “We would’ve noticed if they were communicating.”
“Not necessarily,” Alec broke in, smirking when both Jace and Clary’s heads whipped around to stare at him.
“So you were cheating,” Jace said, eyes wide. “How?”
Alec and Magnus raised their forearms in sync, gesturing to their matching permanent Alliance runes. “It used to be just emotions and abilities, but lately, we’ve been getting thoughts as well,” Alec explained.
“Cheaters,” Jace grumbled, turning away from them with a huff. “We’re going to play another round, and this time you’re going to be on opposite teams.”
Magnus
The next morning dawned with shafts of light that Jace claimed were specially designed to hurt his hungover eyes. (Magnus offered Clary a hangover cure but refused one to Jace until he admitted that Magnus had won their last game of charades fair and square. Admittedly, it was false — Alec had mentally told him the answer, purely to piss Jace off — but Magnus was a fan of irritating Jace, so he didn’t feel particularly guilty.)
Simon dropped in shortly after — he’d struck up a friendship with Clary, Jace, and Izzy, as well as Alec — wearing a shirt with a twenty-sided die in the colours of the pan flag. “Hi guys.”
Jace groaned — his hangover still hadn’t abated fully — but Clary waved cheerfully enough. Alec was making pancakes, which left it to Magnus to swan over and greet him. “Sheldon. Pulling out the Pride merch?”
“It’s June,” Simon replied. “I’m going to the parade in New York with Izzy. Can you believe she didn’t know what pride month was?”
What’s pride month? Alec asked Magnus mentally, causing him to bemoan — yet again — Shadowhunters’ lack of exposure to mundane culture. Last June, he supposed it simply hadn’t come up — they’d been dealing with Lilith and Jonathan at the time — but that was no excuse for Shadowhunter ignorance to continue. “It’s an absolute travesty, my dear,” he told Simon, “but mundane queer culture isn’t exactly in the Shadowhunter curriculum.”
Jace sat up, poised to argue in support of the Shadowhunter curriculum, then winced as his headache apparently increased. Magnus dulled the pain a little, if only so it’d stop bothering Alec through the parabatai bond.
“Mundane culture isn’t necessary for Shadowhunting,” Jace pointed out.
“And Shadowhunters are elitist enough not to bother with anything that isn’t strictly necessary,” Alec put in. “What’s pride month?”
“It’s a celebration of diverse genders and sexualities,” Magnus told him, and launched into an in-depth explanation featuring the origin, the different forms of pride parade around the world, and the general culture surrounding it. “I’ve gone every year since 1970.”
There was an introspective bent to Alec’s feelings through the bond which suggested he was considering an idea, but Clary was the one to speak up. “We should go to New York for it, too, then.”
“Actually,” Alec said, consideringly, “what if we didn’t need to go to New York for it?”
He met Magnus’ eyes, and Magnus understood what he was suggesting. “You want to organise an Alicante Pride Parade.”
Alec grinned. “Well, why not?”
Alec
Organising a Pride Parade in a city that regularly exiled queer people two years earlier was a hassle.
Not enough of a hassle to discourage Alec. If anything, it encouraged him even more — the resistance of his opponents made it from a fun idea into a serious political move, and Alec was always delighted to piss off the remainder of the old guard that’d made it through the Resistance takeover only to be denied at every turn by the new world Alec was building.
He brought it up at the next Downworld Council meeting, and received overwhelming support along with several offers of aid, which he gladly accepted. The parade would be set up with warlock magic, decorated with faerie-grown flowers in the colours of the pride flag, and take place from evening into the night in deference to the vampires’ preferences; it was a celebration both of queer rights and of Downworlder ones, and Alec was delighted when it finally began to come together.
The parade happened on the last Sunday of June, the 26th, and the day was filled with last-minute reorganisations. A patch of flowers had withered for an unknown reason, and Alec needed to regrow them into the purple, grey, white, and black of the ace flag; a float was broken; somebody wanted the parade to go down a different street. At last, however, it was all straightened out to everyone’s satisfaction with a minimum of blackmail and almost no blood spilled at all.
Magnus insisted that Alec come home an hour before the parade was set to start so that they could get ready — or rather, so that he could get Alec ready, because when Alec arrived, he was already dressed to the nines in bright pink, purple, and blue, with more skin showing than Alec had seen on him before in public. What little shirt he was wearing read:
DATING HIM →
STILL BI
His makeup was also in the colours of the bi flag — eyeshadow in stripes of pink, purple, and blue, on both eyes, that stood out when he blinked; a flag painted on his lips; a flag on either cheek; small gemstones stuck around the corners of his eyes; glitter dusting his nose and cheekbones, highlighting them in that same pink/purple/blue.
He looked, in Alec’s estimation, positively ethereal — he was always beautiful, of course, but there was something to be said for the confident pride he wore like a second skin, decked out like this.
Alec, however, doubted he’d be as comfortable in so little clothing. Magnus clearly sensed his trepidation, because he grinned and reassured Alec that he’d be dressed a bit more sedately.
The pants covered Alec’s legs — unlike Magnus’ — but they were tight enough that Alec caught Magnus looking rather below his face whenever he turned around; they were plain black, thankfully, and not too tight for Alec to move comfortably, for which he was grateful. The boots weren’t far off his usual, although perhaps a bit less sturdy and with a few more metal bits on them; the shirt covered a good deal more of his chest than Magnus’ did, at least, and it was black aside from letters in the green-and-blue gay flag that spelled out
← DATING HIM
NO VERY HOMO
The arrows on their respective shirts, Alec noted, pointed in opposite directions, so that when standing next to each other, they’d be pointing to each other. He made a mental note to stay to Magnus’ right so that the shirts worked properly.
The most adventurous part of his outfit was unquestionably his makeup. Magnus had drawn a rainbow flag on one cheek and the gay flag on the other, a pop of colour Alec liked. He hadn’t been covered with glitter (though a good deal had already drifted onto him from Magnus), but Alec’s eyes were traced with black that made them stand out, his face felt odd with foundation, and when he looked in the mirror, he saw an… augmented version of himself — the curves of his face sharpened, cheekbones brighter, eyes standing out more. It was pretty. He’d expected to tolerate it for Magnus’ sake, but strangely, he liked it for himself as well.
Toilette complete, Alec hurried out to oversee the finishing touches on the parade.
Magnus
The parade was everything Magnus could’ve hoped for and more.
He’d showed Alec videos of mundane Prides and explained as much as he could, but he’d half expected the parade to end up relatively boring in the Shadowhunters’ typical shades of black, with a few Downworlders who knew the mundane customs standing out sharply in more colourful wear. But apparently everyone had gotten the memo and Alec was conservative in his mostly-black clothing: many Shadowhunters were wearing flags of various types, often showing nearly as much skin as mundanes might, and the Downworlder half of the crowd was even brighter.
He tugged Alec down into a kiss, and the crowd cheered around them. Alec’s slightly obsessive preparations had turned out perfectly — everything was well-timed and every street was hung with decorations; perhaps more importantly, the atmosphere of jubilant half-defiance was perfect, and Magnus found himself grinning uncontrollably.
Briefly separated from Alec due to organisational difficulties that absolutely required Alec’s approval, Magnus bought himself and Alec several pins adorned with their flags before casting out a mental net to locate his husband. There was a faint shiver of relief in the bond when they found each other again, and probing more closely, Magnus noticed a faint discomfort with the size of the crowd; it wasn’t so bad that Alec wanted to leave, but when Magnus guided him into a quieter area, the slight tension in Alec’s shoulders dissipated. He accepted the pins with a smile that shone brighter than the glitter on his cheeks.
Izzy appeared shortly after in one of the most revealing dresses Magnus had ever seen her in — which was saying something — in blatant stripes of purple, pink, and blue. Simon was wearing the D&D shirt in pan colours that’d started it all off, and while Jace’s shirt only read ALLY, Clary was wearing the colours of the omni flag.
“This is really cool, man,” Simon told Alec, grinning. “Never thought Shadowhunters would have so much pride.”
Alec shrugged, uncomfortable as always with praise, but Magnus pushed a thread of his own admiration through the bond to reinforce Simon’s words. Alec arched an eyebrow at him, and Magnus grinned, unrepentant.
“They’re doing their Alliance-bond-telepathy schtick,” Jace announced, rather complainingly — Magnus supposed he was still salty about his loss at charades, and the bond shot through with laughter.
“Jealous?” Alec asked him.
Jace promptly scowled, and Alec chuckled out loud this time.
Surrounded by brilliant colours and laughter, Magnus had never felt more at home.

Hi! Can I request a Clarissa × Fem!reader, where reader is spending a lot of time talking to someone from Athena's cabin and she gets jealous. you can decide what cabin reader is in :)
Jealous jealous girl
Tumblr media
Clarisse la rue x fem!reader (apollo's kid)
Summary: when the girl she likes is being friendly to someone, Clarisse might see red.
Warnings: no major fights actually, fluff (a bit) kissing (yes today no clickbait) medíocre writting and im sorry.
(I didn't review it, don't sue me, English isn't my native language, that's probably why it's mediocre, love ya
"Have you actually read that book? Oh my gods really? I felt like i was the only one who knew it"
Clarisse watched with red eyes as (Y/n) got excited and laughed togheter with some kid from Athena's cabin.
They werent exactly...togheter yet, but they WERE something, everyone was sure of that.
Clarisse mind couldnt comprehend then, how even though EVERYONE knew they had something, that particular girl would not back off of her.
(Y/n) laughed togheter with the girl at some book reference she had made, and the final straw for Clarisse was when the girl had the courage to touch her girl's knee.
Her sunshine?
The disrespect, was she not seeing Clarrise looking at them? Like 10 steps behind?
The.disrespect.
Oh that will end right now.
Walking over to the girls with a fake smile who people would perceive of normal happiness, however, if you did knew her, her eyes had a hint of red rage in them.
"Love? Would you come with me for a second yes?"
She took (Y/n) by the hands but before she could even get up the Athena kid made herself seen.
"Excuse me? Cant you see we're talking? So rude."
"Oh yes, excuse you really, i dont think a need a cue to talk to my girlfriend, now shut up before I make you eat that book for dinner."
Not waiting for any more words Clarisse took reader by the hand again.
"Clarisse that was not nice, she was my friend- dont even start to speak right now, we'll talk in my cabin, it must be empity right now, we dont need the camp seeing something they dont need"
Letting (Y/n) guide her, still holding her hand, Clarisse had a confused look on her face.
"But we are not going to fight, not today"
"Says who?"
They got inside the cabin and bingo, empity empity, all the Apollo kids must be doing its activities, or getting ready for dinner, as always.
"Me, Love. We wont fight, we'll talk."
Clarisse sat down at the bed she knew it was (y/n)'s waiting for her to do the same.
Choosing to stand, she had a blank look on her face.
"You said we would talk, talk to me, why be mean to my friend clari?"
"Because im jealous. Im not made of steel, love, i cant see a girl from a rival cabin flirting with my sunshine and go around skipping like a kid, you know me"
"We were not flirting clari, she is my friend!"
"YOU were not flirting, she wants to be more than that"
Clarisse corrected
"And you have a right to do something about it since when? Everytime you talk about me to your friends im a friend too, but suddently when its convenient i turn into your girlfriend? Oh please"
Clarisse looked at her, and extended her hands to grab (y/n) hands, when they finally touched Clarisse got (y/n) to get closer and closer to her, now she was standing in between Clarisse's legs and had to look down to see her.
"I never said i was right love, im sorry for hurting you, i swear.....i was insecure about that, im so sorry really..."
"Clari you dont needed to-"
"Date me"
Clarisse interrupted her mid speech.
"What?"
"Date me, let me introduce you to everyone as my girlfriend, i wont make you hurt anymore, date me....-"
Please
That was the word missing, would it make clarisse apear as desperate if she used it?
Fuck it, she was inside the Apollo cabin, that gave her enough poetic justice to be as luvestruck as she could
She found herself resting her hands on (y/n) hips, looking up to her with heart eyes.
"Please... date me"
.
.
.
"Say something, please"
Whoever first said that acts spoke words was very much right, because the kiss Clarisse received was nothing short of a love letter.
Clarisse felt hands on her cheek and neck, caressing her.
The kiss was slow and carefull at first, like the first time they kissed, so very sweet, until it wasn't.
When the kiss deepened, Clarisse's hands sunk more onto (y/n) hips, and then started to pull her down, to sit on her lap.
It was the very first time both felt like this, the absolute need to just become a fusion, hug so tightly a loved one that they would just morph into one.
"Thank you, thank you, thank you"
Clarisse said, breathing in her girlfriend's neck when they separated to breath.
When (y/n) was going to speak, she felt a small bite on her lower neck.
"Clarisse- ah"
"Sorry.."
Clarissed giggled before she went back kissing her mouth, when did she became one of the girls that giggled?
They heard the cabin door opening and then a
"Oh fuck sorry i just...ill come back later, and you (y/n) will tell me everything about later or ill change my name, bye lovebirds"
They looked at each other resisting the urge to laugh.
"Well i guess we wont need to introduce ourselfs to anybody, by tomorrow morning they'll know"

loved your post defending clary but what is your opinion on jace??? i feel like he's equally controversial
you know how sometimes rereading books a few years later changes your opinion on certain characters entirely bc instead of being some older hot brooding hero they're now just some kid in your eyes. that's me with jace right now
in fact you may have asked his at the perfect moment because i had a whole breakdown about this last night in the group chat last night i feel like this text sums it up quite well
Tumblr media
he has 2 to 6 parents depending on how you look at it and for at least 17 years none of them ever loved him. he was fully prepared to go back to his cartoonishly evil kidapper dad who physically abused him bc at least there he felt wanted. he just wanted maryse to read him a bedtime story when he was 10 like she did for alec and isabelle. she never did. he just wants to be loved so so desperately. he can be genuinely hilarious and charming but now i'm looking back on it, it mostly reads like that too is just a way he taught himself to get the attention he wants so desperately. it's implied that he's been suicidal/has engaged in acts of self-harm since he arrived with the lightwoods when he was literally 10.
i think most people (me included!!) just remember him as a sarcastic rude asshole which to be fair is very much who he is HOWEVER every single time we get jace pov he reveals another 5 reasons why he's actually kind of valid in his assholery. this boy is playing DSM-5 bingo and babes his card is FULL and it's literally so upsetting to read. he's just a very sad kid and i'm literally on my way to nyc adoption papers in hand

*grabby hands* LB family chaos yes pls
“Magnus,” Alec warned. “Do not meddle.”
“It’s not meddling,” Magnus protested. “It’s just a little shove in the right direction. It’s my god-given right as their bapak to shove them when required.”
“Well, we’re not doing any shoving,” Alec said in a tone that meant no further arguments. Magnus never really cared for that tone so he decided to ignore it.
“How about a nudge then?” Magnus amended. “A gentle nudge.”
“No nudging either!”
“Oh, come on!”
“Magnus,” Alec sighed tiredly. “We’ve talked about this. We don’t meddle in our children’s relationships.”
“It’s nudging!” Magnus clarified.
“This is not going to end well for you. When has your meddling ever led to anything good?”
“Nudging,” Magnus said again. “And I have so many examples.”
“Name one.”
Ah. Shit.
There has to be something, right?
“Sizzy!” Magnus yelled triumphantly. “Simon and Isabelle are together because of my meddling!”
“They got together because of Clary’s meddling,” Alec told him.
“Is that what she’s going around and telling people?” Magnus demanded. “I will be having words!”
"She literally introduced them!"
"At my party!"
“Magnus.”
“Please, Alexander,” Magnus pouted.
Alec sighed. In that way he did when he couldn’t resist Magnus’ pouting. Bingo!
“Fine,” Alec said. “A gentle nudge. But that’s it.”
“I promise,” Magnus said solemly.
“But leave me out of it!”
“Don’t you want to be my partner in crime?” Magnus asked sweetly.
“No!” Alec yelled over his shoulder as he walked away.
“Fine,” Magnus huffed and looked at Chairman Meow. “You can be my partner. Let’s find everything we can on that French Boy and Scary Girl.”

Malec | Rated general | tw mention of Jace's abusive childhood, panic attacks | Post-Canon, Jace Wayland-centric, Sexuality Crisis, Pansexual Simon Lewis, Pansexual Jace Wayland, Mutual Pining, Idiots in Love, Love Confessions, Light Angst, Angst with a Happy Ending | Bingo Square: Pansexual
Summary: For most of Jace’s life, his assumption that he was straight went unchallenged.
Jace is definitely not straight and in love with Clary. That doesn't change just because Simon's cute and funny and brave and— well, Jace is straight, so obviously he doesn't like Simon that way. (Right?)
A/N: Many thanks to CJ for beta'ing this for me!
This work was created for the Shadowhunters Pride Bingo presented by the Malec Discord Server. @malecdiscordserver
Read it on AO3 or below the cut.
For most of Jace’s life, his assumption that he was straight went unchallenged.
After all, he did like girls — more than Alec did, at least — and he was pretty sure he liked them more than boys. So what if Jace also noticed how hot some boys were? Didn’t everyone? Wasn’t it, like, normal, to appreciate people who looked good?
(Alec noticed how hot boys were, which served as Jace’s proof that they were both totally straight until he finally figured out how gay Alec was. This realisation, sadly, failed to make Jace question his own sexuality.)
After all, he didn’t, like, particularly want to kiss a boy. He was curious what it’d be like, sure — who wasn’t? — but he’d always hook up with a girl when they went to a club. Some boys were hot, but more girls were hot, and that was enough confirmation for Jace that he was straight. Very straight.
The first time he questioned his firm commitment to hetrosexuality was thanks to Meliorn, who was — well — attractive. But Seelies didn’t exactly do gender the way that mundanes and Shadowhunters did; Meliorn was simply androgynous enough that Jace’s very straight perceptions noticed he was hot. That was all, right?
But then there was Simon, and, well — he was cute. Nerdy, and he definitely talked too much, but it was actually kinda… adorable. And when he was rambling, Jace now found himself wanting to shut him up by kissing him, which was — probably not straight. (Probably.)
Except Jace was straight (wasn’t he?) so it didn’t make sense. He was in love with Clary, not Simon — and anyway Simon was clearly caught between his crush on Clary and his crush on Izzy (he ignored the pain he felt at the thought), so it wasn’t like anything would happen. (Of course nothing would happen. He was straight.)
He did not have a crush on Simon Lewis, no matter how cute he was or how funny his Star Wars jokes were (now that Jace actually understood them) or how warm he felt when Simon smiled at him.
The thing was, he kinda… wasn’t in love with Clary anymore. If he’d ever been. When they’d first met, there’d been that instantaneous feeling of oh, it’s you, I’ve been looking for you — but that was more their shared angel blood than any sort of soulmate-y connection. They’d both translated it into a romantic love (or at least a crush), which had made it really weird when they’d thought they were siblings, but then they’d realised they weren’t and somehow they’d just — assumed that meant they were in love. And before they’d had a chance to breathe and think about what they meant to each other, Clary’s memories had been stolen, and Jace had spent a year in heartbreak and never questioned the idea that he was in love with her.
But then, she’d gotten her memories back, and while he was overjoyed she was back, he didn’t feel that all-encompassing attraction anymore. Perhaps it was partially because her extra angelic blood was gone now, but it was also that he simply didn’t love her like that anymore — he loved her like he loved Alec or Izzy, more like a sister than a girlfriend.
That was why, even when she was back properly and she remembered them all, they hadn’t really gotten back together. Well, hadn’t gotten back together at all — they hadn’t talked about it, hadn’t kissed. Jace was privately relieved, and immediately felt horrible because if Clary was still in love with him— but it wasn’t like she had tried to get them back together, either—
The longer it went on, the awkward if consensual not talking, the more certain Jace became that he wasn’t in love with Clary any longer. (And no, that did not mean he was in love with Simon; that was a ridiculous thought. Jace was straight, dammit. Straight. Liked girls. Didn’t fall in love with cute nerdy Daylighters. That was all.)

So, when Clary came into his room and declared that they needed to talk, he felt a complicated mix of trepidation, guilt, and apology.
When Clary explained that she wasn’t in love with Jace anymore and that she’d fallen for Izzy instead, that was all replaced by relief. He grinned at her, told her that he wasn’t in love with her either, and accepted her hug with a perceptible loosening of the shoulders. (It had nothing to do with the fact that if Clary and Izzy liked each other, neither of them would start dating Simon. Nope. Not at all.)
She proceeded to explain that she’d just “accidentally” kissed Izzy — how a kiss could be accidental, Jace couldn’t fathom — and then panicked about Jace and ran away. Jace promptly had a revelation about the looks Izzy had been discreetly sending Clary for the last month or so, huffed, and informed her that if she didn’t go down, apologise to Izzy, and kiss her properly, Jace would assign her to train the new recruits for the next six months.
Clary blanched, grinned, and then took off — hopefully for the lab where Izzy was likely swallowing back heartbreak. When she showed up four hours later with messy hair, a shirt on backwards, and her hand held tightly in Izzy’s, Jace beamed as brightly as either of them.
But that still didn’t really resolve Jace’s problem. (Not that there was a problem — he was straight! Obviously!) He still couldn’t stop thinking about Simon, about how surprisingly brave he was beneath his constant chatter and jokes. If he was straight — which he was — why was he feeling butterflies in his stomach when Simon smiled at him?
He decided to talk to Alec. Alec would, of course, tell Jace that he was straight — which Jace already knew! He just wanted extra confirmation, that was all — and then Jace would be able to figure himself out and not worry about not being straight. (Not that he was worrying about that, because he was straight.)

Alec looked up impatiently from his reports as Jace came into his office, but his features softened as he took in Jace’s expression. “What’s up?”
The story came spilling out. Clary, and the confusion of falling out of love; Simon, and the cute way he smiled and made Jace’s heart beat faster.
For a moment after Jace was done, Alec blinked at him in silence. Then, he said with absolute certainty, “You’re not straight, Jace.”
Jace was silent. He’d thought — he’d expected Alec would confirm he was straight, not deny it; he shook his head, almost unaware of what he was doing, head spinning. “No, I’m — I’m straight, I thought—”
Alec opened his mouth to say something else, but Jace reached blindly behind him for the door handle, turned it, and left Alec’s office at a run.
He didn’t know where he was going; his head felt like a mess, thoughts spilling out in random bursts that only confused him more. He was straight — he thought he was straight, he believed it, he’d always been straight; now the world was spinning because Alec didn’t think he was, and he felt that bloom of warmth in his chest whenever he thought of Simon, and panic was curling tighter and tighter around him.
Far enough away from Alec’s office, Jace sat down hard on the floor, back to the wall, legs curled up to his chest. He was breathing quickly, too quickly, but his thoughts were spinning even faster and he didn’t know what to think, what he was, who he was, who he wanted to be — or to be with.
He didn’t know what was wrong with him, why he was like this — Alec was gay, and that was fine; Magnus was bi, as was Izzy; Clary was lesbian. It wasn’t — it wasn’t that he thought it would be bad to like men; it was just that he’d thought, assumed, for so long — and now he knew he wasn’t straight, that he was bi or pan or omni or poly or something like that, he wasn’t — it’d been a part of him, a part of his identity, and irrational panic was rising irrepressibly in his throat.
And, he realised with a second burst of shock: he had a crush on Simon. He’d been vaguely irritated by the mundane-turned-vampire-turned-Daylighter at first, with his constant chatter and references that nobody else got except sometimes Clary, but over time he’d grown to know Simon better, to like him better; a reluctant affection had bloomed into something more, into an attraction that Jace could no longer deny.
It wasn’t just butterflies in his stomach, it was a warmth in his chest — it wasn’t that all-encompassing heat he’d found with Clary, driven by angelic blood and adrenaline; it wasn’t like any of the other girls he’d dated, either, quick and fun but not deep. Perhaps that was why it’d taken him so long to realise that he liked Simon that way — because it wasn’t like any of the other romantic relationships he’d had.
With Simon, he admired more than Simon’s looks. He admired his quiet bravery that so often went under the radar; his constant desire to cheer up the people around them, to comfort them if he could, to stay with them if he couldn’t; his determination to do what was right that nobody — not even Simon — seemed to notice because it was such a fundamental, simple truth. Simon was a genuinely good person, and Jace didn’t know what to do with that.
Because this wasn’t just a crush. This was more; it was deeper, warmer, longer-lasting; it was a glow and not an inferno, a quiet constant rather than a burst of sound that died away too quickly to see clearly, and shit, he was in love with Simon Lewis—
But Simon was probably straight, and didn’t he have a crush on Izzy, or Clary, or both? He’d never mentioned not being straight, and while Jace knew it was possible that he liked both boys and girls — like Jace did, apparently — that didn’t mean Simon liked Jace. And if he did like Jace, he would’ve said something, right? His crush on Clary had been clear enough; he’d never showed any similar signs with Jace, which meant that he probably didn’t like Jace back—
“Jace?”
A voice, one he recognised, but he couldn’t think to put a name to it because his head was spinning wildly with panic that wasn’t helping him figure anything out, at all, and he was fairly certain he was having an panic attack which he hadn’t had since he was six and Valentine had snapped him out of it with a dagger through the shoulder that’d taken months to heal since he was too young for an iratze; perhaps that was why his love life was doomed to failure, because he’d been raised by a genocidal sociopath—
“Jace!” The voice was sharper now, pointed, and suddenly there were hands on Jace’s shoulders, calming him, bringing him back to earth. “Shh, take a deep breath with me—”
“Simon,” Jace managed, and while Simon’s presence probably should’ve made everything worse — it was, after all, about the fact that he was in love with Simon that he was panicking — but instead, his voice was somehow soothing.
“In, two, three, four, out, two, three, four. That’s good, just keep breathing, you’re going to be okay.”
Jace obeyed almost automatically, inhaling and exhaling on Simon’s pattern, feeling his heartbeat slow and his head clear. He opened his eyes and looked up, black spots he’d barely noticed fading from his vision as he took in Simon’s concerned frown, the cute little divot between his brows, his pursed lips, his brown eyes looking at Jace with worry, but not pity. Simon didn’t pity people, and Jace was infinitely grateful for that.
“You alright?” Simon asked him, hands still on Jace’s shoulders, and Jace felt abruptly, viscerally aware of how close together they were. He decided to blame his too-fast heartbeat on the panic attack.
“Fine,” Jace said reflexively, and Simon arched an eyebrow.
“You don’t need to talk about it if you don’t want to, but you don’t seem very fine.”
For a moment, Jace hesitated, but the words came tumbling out before he could make up his mind that he didn’t want to. “I — I’m just… having a minor sexuality crisis, I suppose.” He huffed self-deprecatingly. “I… don’t think I’m straight.”
There was something complicated in Simon’s eyes, but Jace didn’t have the brainpower to decipher it before it was gone again. Simon shifted to sit more comfortably, hands falling away from Jace’s shoulders, and Jace did his best not to mourn the loss of contact. “Uh. Congratulations,” Simon offered, slightly hesitant.
“Thanks,” Jace returned dryly. “You deal with my panic attacks better than Valentine.” He didn’t almost say my father this time, which was progress, but the name still brought a complicated mix of emotions — fear and hatred uppermost, of course, but Valentine had raised him, and it could never be that simple.
Simon huffed, leaning back on the wall of the corridor facing Jace. “That’s not very high praise, you know.”
Jace shrugged. “Probably not. Still — where’d you learn how to calm me down?”
“I used to have panic attacks all the time,” Simon replied. “Notably, one over the realisation that I’m pan” — Jace kept his face carefully blank at the reveal, quashing the hope that rose almost automatically in his throat — “but I had them over other stuff, too. You know, school, bullies, stage fright, being nerdy, having a crush on Clary, band stuff, no reason in particular — or actually a bunch of them at once, that happened a few times too, especially when my band had a performance at the end of term so I also had a ton of schoolwork—” He cut himself off. “Sorry, I’m rambling.” (Jace rather wished he could punch everyone who’d ever made Simon think he needed to apologise for talking.) “Point is, Luke used to help me deal with them, so I’ve got an idea what it’s like, and how to deal with it.”
They were both quiet for a moment. Jace wasn’t sure what to say; the panic was abating, but it wasn’t gone yet, blurring his thoughts. Having Simon there was calming, though, and despite the silence, he relaxed.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Simon offered, only slightly hesitant.
Yes, actually. Jace usually didn’t like talking about feelings, but was happy to talk about anything else; with Simon, oddly, it was the reverse. Silence was comfortable — especially odd, seeing as Simon talked a lot — but Jace was also comfortable talking about more… private things. He usually resisted the urge, if only to keep up his cold-hearted persona, but sometimes — like now — he didn’t. “I always just — assumed I was straight, I guess. I mean, I do like girls, and I never really… thought it meant anything, that I sometimes also liked guys?” He shook his head. “It sounds dumb now, because I’m — I mean, I do like boys, but I didn’t… didn’t think it meant anything, you know?”
“Yeah, I get that,” Simon said amicably. “Heteronormativity and all that. You don’t question it until it comes and slaps you in the face.”
“‘Slaps you in the face’ sounds about right.” Jace managed a small smile, hoping Simon wouldn’t ask what that slap in the face had been, because it’d been Simon himself, and pan or not, Simon didn’t like Jace that way, and everything would get… awkward.
Thankfully, Simon went on without asking. “For me, it was this guy in my band — he left a little while later, moved somewhere else, but while he was still playing with us, I kept noticing that he looked really cute with a guitar. And I was crushing on Clary at the time, so I didn’t really think about it for a while, but at some point I realised that I liked him in, like, that way. So I had a bit of a crisis — Luke found me, I came out to him, he reacted pretty well, gave me the courage to come out to my mom. And she didn’t really get it, she’d heard of being gay but not really being pan, but she figured it out and she was pretty supportive by the time I got involved with—” he gestured around them, as if to encompass their whole lives, the Shadow World and all that it entailed “—all this.”
Jace knew that Simon hadn’t been able to talk to his mother since he’d become a vampire. She thought he was dead, and while Jace hadn’t known her at all, he felt a dull stab of sympathy for Simon’s pain. Right now, however, didn’t seem like the time for him to bring that up; there was a touch of melancholy in Simon’s voice, but he didn’t seem like he wanted to linger on it. “Seeing as Izzy’s bi and Alec’s gay, I doubt I have to worry about not being accepted.”
Simon chuckled, though Jace’s words barely counted as a joke; at least it was light-hearted enough to distract Simon from his mother. “That is an advantage. I remember, when I first got here, I thought everyone would be straight, and now…”
“Yeah, we’ve all come out as some sort of queer over the last two years,” Jace agreed. They’d all grown as people, too, from irresponsible children to adults (Jace, Clary, Izzy, and Simon) or closeted teenagers to confident Inquisitors (Alec). There was probably a metaphor somewhere in there. Between Clary, Simon, and Magnus coming into their lives with a bang and the numerous near-death experiences of the last two years, there’d been plenty of reason and time to mature.
“What about you? I mean, are you pan, or bi, or omni, or—?” Simon asked, tilting his head to the side.
“I… don’t actually know,” Jace said thoughtfully. “What — I’m sorry, I don’t really know what the… difference is, between those?”
“Depends who you ask,” Simon said. “Some people distinguish between them — like, bi people are attracted to both men and women but in different ways, while pan people are kinda attracted to everyone regardless of gender, and poly people are attracted to multiple genders but not necessarily their own — but then a lot of people just choose whichever one they like best. I mean, the fact that there’s a ‘pan’ in ‘panda’ definitely factored into my decision, plus I like the colours better. And I’ve known people who’re omni because they like the flag better, as well as people who really think one of the definitions fits them best.”
“Huh.” Jace considered that for a moment. Izzy and Magnus were bi — they’d both dressed up in pink, purple, and blue at Pride, complete with colourful makeup and skimpy clothing which, in Magnus’ case, had made Alec blush — but that didn’t quite feel right for him; he liked the splash of yellow across the pan flag, standing out sharply against the other shades. Like Simon. “I — I like pan, I think.”
“That’s great.” Simon grinned encouragingly. “And you can, like, change your mind or whatever if you decide something else fits better.”
Jace nodded. The panic that’d risen so sharply in his throat was nearly gone now, soothed away by Simon and their conversation and Simon and the settling of his thoughts and Simon. Mostly Simon.
“If I may,” Simon said, an odd note of hesitance in his voice, “what made you realise you weren’t straight?”
Shit. Jace barely managed to keep the swear from spilling out of his mouth, because this was exactly what he’d hoped Simon wouldn’t ask. He’d just — lie, make something up about seeing one cute guy too many—
But Simon was looking at him with something almost like hope in his eyes, something tentative and uncertain but there, almost like Simon was hoping for a particular answer, and that gave Jace the courage to answer honestly.
That didn’t mean he wouldn’t beat around the bush a little. “Well, I talked to Alec, expecting him to confirm that I was straight, and he told me I definitely wasn’t. That was what brought on the realisation and minor panic attack.”
Simon hummed, that strange hope/wish/desire in his eyes that Jace couldn’t quite decipher, and Jace went on. “But I — the real reason I started questioning it, even if I couldn’t admit it to myself, was because of you.”
He’d lost the courage required to look at Simon properly, eyes falling to his hands in his lap, and he didn’t know what face Simon was making. “It’s because I realised that I’m in love with you — have been for a while, really, though I was too steeped in denial to recognise it at first. I’d convinced myself I was in love with Clary, but I’m — I’m not, I don’t know if I ever was, if it was anything but adrenaline and angel blood that pushed us together. When you and Clary were dating, I told myself I was jealous of you, but I was really jealous of her.” He hesitated, but Simon still didn’t say anything, so he went on. “I love the way you ramble when you’re excited about something, and I hate that you’ve been told so often that you talk so much, because I like listening to you talk. I love how much joy you get from Star Wars puns or jokes that nobody but Clary and me really get. I love how brave you are, even when you don’t think you’re being brave, just doing what’s necessary.” The words seemed to flow almost without Jace’s volition, all the feelings he’d denied or holed up in his soul coming spilling out of his lips. “I have no idea if you feel the same way, but I can’t — I can’t lie about this any more. I love you.”
He finally dared to look up, and found Simon staring at him with wide eyes and a smile dancing at the corners of his mouth. “I love you too,” Simon said.
For a moment, Jace blinked, and then he felt the hope in his chest burst into joy that brought a grin to his lips. “Of course you do. I’m irresisti—mph.”
Simon cut him off with a kiss, and Jace’s brain went blank at the touch of his lips. His hands came up almost automatically to cup Simon’s face, to pull him closer, and Jace thought for a delirious moment that he wanted to stay here, like this, forever.
Unfortunately, breathing was a necessity — if only for Jace, thanks to Simon’s vampirism — and he eventually had to pull back. Jace met Simon’s eyes, warm and brown and full of love that he scarcely believed he could ever deserve.
“I love you,” Simon said again, and Jace’s smile brightened almost involuntarily.
“I know,” he replied, and Simon blinked at him for a moment in surprise.
“Did you just quote Star Wars at me?”
“I listen when you talk,” Jace told him, “and your jokes are a lot funnier when I know what they’re referencing.”
Simon beamed and kissed him again.

Love Triangles ≠ Tug-Of-War
“Oh great. Another love triangle.”
“Here it comes: the love triangle.”
“Ooohhh, I see a love triangle going on~!”
That’s the idea that is the new norm right now in storytelling: the love triangle, a situation involving a tense-making drama between three people, most commonly a girl that falls in love with two guys separately, and both guys love her back.
(Thanks Twilight.)
But the thing is, there’s actually a catch on calling it a love triangle. I was so caught up on the tri-romance that I didn’t realize it myself until seeing a source, whether a comment or something, had me thinking.
Thinking enough to head back to elementary school, where we learned our shapes.
You know how a triangle works. I don’t need to bring out a diagram. You got your Point A, Point B and Point C. Connect the dots and bingo! You got your triangle:
Tumblr media
But here’s the thing: the triangle points… aren’t the same as the points in a love triangle.
Here’s the thing:
- Point A connects to Point B,
- Point B connects to Point C;
- and, Point C connects to Point A.
Simple, right?
But here’s the question: Why isn’t the points ALL connected in a love triangle?
The answer: It can’t, because it’s not a triangle.
It never was.
Tumblr media
Shocking, I know.
Now, before anyone mentions on defending the “love triangle being legit”, remember what I said before: a triangle makes up three points, and they all have to connect to make the shape. That doesn’t work the same way as the love triangles I’ve been noticing from certain stories. Twilight, especially for being the root of it all.
Bella likes Edward. Bella likes Jacob.
Edward likes Bella. Jacob likes Bella.
One girl likes both guys. Both guys like the same girl.
Bella is Point A.
Edward is Point B.
Jacob is Point C.
Point A likes Points B and C. Point B likes A, and so does Point C.
It’s not a triangle because Point B and C – Edward and Jacob – are not connected.
Neither one has feelings for the other – other than the feeling to rip at each other’s throats. (Being a vampire and werewolf, respectively, it’s no surprise.)
Because if they were, then the real triangle would be:
Jacob likes Bella.
Bella likes Edward.
But Edward likes Jacob…
Tumblr media
I’m humored by that. Just imagine how the plot would go if it somehow went like that. There would be new teams: Team Bella and Edward, or Team Jacob and Bella, or Team Edward and Jacob.
The direction it would have gone if were done…
BUT!
It wasn’t so it’s not a triangle – it’s tug-of-war. Love war. Both men fighting/trying/convincing/doing everything they can in a situation to get the girl they both like to accept one of them.
There’s a rope with two ends and a centered mark. Who gets the mark is the direction of a pair the author was going for.
Bella was the center mark. And Edward and Jacob were at the ends.
Same goes for:
- The Hunger Games; Katniss at the middle, with Gale and Peeta at the ends.
- The Mortal Instruments; Clary in the middle, with Jace and Simon at the ends; and,
- Legendborn (Read it if you haven’t! So damn good!); Bree in the middle, with Nick and Sel at the ends.
The effort the guys pull is the direction of which of the guys is with the girl in the storyline.
It was never a triangle. For the guys such as mentioned above, it was tug-of-war.
And for the girl in the center—heck, it would have been an angle without a base! The A without the middle line. Just standing like an open ladder, the bottom ends for two people to stand on and fight who will be first to the top as they climb—and by her acceptance.
This can also work vise-versa – the girls doing tug-of-war, the guy as the singular point of an angle. The rope or angle can even break if the main love interest decides neither one! Or whoever the author would be using.
The point is, the next time you read a book and see a romance where Point A falls for Points B and C, and the feelings are returned, remember: it’s not a love triangle. It’s a return to your childhood, during recess or P.E., where the rope is held at both ends, the center mark is the target, and whoever team you are on is the support for one of the pullers.
Not a love triangle. Just a new game of Tug-Of-War.
Thanks for reading my WriTED Talk 😊

Mishpukhe [Shadowhunters - Bubbie Helen & The Lewis Family, Simon/Izzy, Clary/Rebecca]
Helen smiled. The whole mishpukhe was here. It was important to her, having everyone there, seeing her daughter and grandkids and their loved ones. She loved being Simon and Rebecca's bubbie and she loved being a bubbie to their lovers too.
She loved that they celebrated every holiday with her, without fail. No matter what the young ones had going on in their lives, they made time for this. They made time to celebrate and they made time for their bubbie.
"Elaine, you light the menorah tonight," Helen said.
Simon and Izzy helped Helen get up from her chair so she could watch the menorah lighting better. Clary and Rebecca quietly held hands. Elaine's voice was beautiful as she said the prayers. Helen teared up a little. Yes, this all made her so happy.
She became even happier when Simon and Izzy told her that Izzy was pregnant. The more family, the better she thought. And something told her, from the sweet smile they exchanged, that Clary and Rebecca thought the same.
"We'll have little ones running around soon during Hanukkah," Helen said to Simon. "It always made me happy when you and your sister were young."
Simon gave her a hug and then Izzy hugged her too. Simon asked his sister to play dreidel, like they always did when they were kids. Clary and Izzy sat down with Helen and watched their partners.
There was laughter and joy. This was a good night and a good family, Helen thought to herself. G-d had given her her own miracles.
