book review: she who became the sun
Woohoo, this stacked well with reading the "end of Ming, early Qing" stretch of The Search for Modern China. It's set in a similar time period, and Zhu, the "random peasant who turned out to have an amazing knack for leading a rebellion" protagonist, fits neatly into the historical period where many peasants or failed bureaucrats were discovering that this was their calling.
GOOD novel. Chewy. It's good. Had enough crazy brilliant protagonist energy to remind me of the Vorkosigan saga:
"That monk knows exactly what he wants. The night before the battle at Yao River, he asked me to make that gong for him. I made it, he used it, and he won,” Jiao said. “I’ve met his type before. They either go far or die early. And either way, they have a tendency to make collateral damage of normal people.” He raised his eyebrows at Yuchun. “Are you special, little brother? Because if you’re not, I’d watch out."
Will definitely be buying the sequel.
(At this point the review becomes spoilery.)
One of the most gorgeous blood feud I've ever seen! The players in the blood feud are:
- Ouyang, the sole survivor of the massacre of his Han family – begged for his life as a child, was spared but castrated, and has grown up into a fearsome Mongol general
- Chaghan, the high ranking Mongol military commander who did the massacreing
- Esen, Chaghan's son who conforms perfectly to Mongol masculine warrior ideals. Loves Ouyang as a best friend but fails to see, at all, how bitter Ouyang is with his life and how set he is on revenge.
- Wang, Chaghan's half-Han nephew whom he adopted as a son.
Each pair of the above either outright hates each other, OR is plotting the other's destruction despite great love, except Chaghan and Esen. It's fabulous! Ouyang is... oh, just read this short post about CS Lewis's definition of damnation. Ouyang is very damned.
Oh, Ouyang. Women are terrible! The politics.” He groaned. “Consider yourself lucky you’ll never have to suffer this kind of torment.”
Esen never meant to hurt, and Ouyang had always taken care to pretend matter-of-fact acceptance about his exclusion from family life. Why should he blame Esen for not reading his mind to see the anger and pain there? But the truth was: he did blame Esen. Blamed him even more than he would a stranger, because it hurt more that someone so beloved should not see the truth of him. And he blamed and hated himself, for hiding that truth.
Ouyang's arc is a superbly executed tragedy. The climax, I think, physically winded me slightly.
And Wang –
This book is primarily about people-who-are-not-fully-men by the Mongol standards of manhood, and of the GNC characters, Wang was the one who struck me as queerest by nature/volition rather than circumstance. His gender is Accountant Who Loves The Arts, and his Manchu relatives HATE him for it. His gender noncompliance seems like "I'm doing this because I really want to and anything else is painful" rather than "I'm doing this because I was castrated" (Ouyang) or "I'm doing this because I was going to literally starve to death unless I latched on to the niche that was meant to be my dead brother's" (the protagonist).
Said GNC people sniff each other out quickly and feel Weird Magnetism. "Like calls to like" is an italicized refrain. In fact, Zhu's nonbinarydar is so advanced that she intuits Ouyang's emotional damage within minutes of meeting him, and feels a magnetic pull to him for the rest of the book. As a shipper, I'm a huge fan. (What I want: Ouyang/Zhu/Ma triad fic.) As a person who yearns for anyone to understand Ouyang, I'm a huge fan. But I'm an anti-fan of "these two people who are very different are of the Same Kind because they don't fit into mainstream culture". Such groupings are politically expedient but I feel allergic to seeing them painted as intrinsic similarities – to say, these two things are the same because they are not X, seems to ontologically center "X vs not X" when the political project should be to dissolve the salience of that division.
Through that strange quiver of connection to the Yuan’s eunuch general, she had seen beneath that carved-jade mask to his shame and self-hate and anger. He had a wound for a heart, and that made him a more dangerous opponent than anyone here realized.
I feel weird writing a paragraph about this, but the book is really explicit that these radically different GNC people are on the same wavelength and I'm like, NO, they're really not!... they could have grown into the weird intense soulmate enemy bond they immediately have in book 1, and that would have felt narratively rewarding to me – recognition through inquiry and (reluctant) empathy and reflection, not, Nonbinary Frog Pheromones
Finally: I loved Zhu's romance arc and childhood trauma and fucking everything. She's ten years old when her father is kicked to death by bandits for not offering them enough food (the whole region is some years into a famine), and by the time she's an adult this feels so faraway that... well, as an adult she sees a food seller at a market being extorted, and the scene goes like this:
“Hey, granny!”
Well, less hope for some. Zhu, observing the unfolding human drama, felt a stirring of unease: the memory of something witnessed so long ago that it might as well have been in a past life.
Seriously, the kicked to death thing never comes up again, and the elision is vast and leaves a lot of room for echoes. Similarly – several minutes before being kicked to death, the desperate father, who devalues girl children in a culturally unexceptional way, offers ten year old Zhu as food for the bandits so they'll leave him and his son alone. (This whole scene is amazingly written, and does not get in the way of the inherent intensity and awfulness of this event.) Zhu does not process this onscreen At All. Once her entire family is dead she starts rolling on her journey to becoming a warlord like a polished marble. Said journey involves her taking her brother's place at a monastery and playing at being a not-girl so well that even the heavens won't notice that she's of the Grindable To Nothingness gender, all while having ZERO thoughts about the "eat my daughter and leave us alone" incident. Fucking fantastic.
Anyway, at the beginning of becoming a warlord, she meets Ma, a Girl Who Is Somehow Nice Despite The World Making This Very Hard:
in her face there was such a depth of raw and innocent emotion that Zhu’s eye was drawn as if to the scene of an accident
and
Zhu, watching Ma with an alien ache in her heart, saw the girl turn away at the critical moment [of someone she cares about being executed]. There was nobody to comfort her. She simply folded over onto herself in the middle of that empty bubble in the crowd, crying. Zhu felt a strong protective urge rise up in her at the sight. With alarm she realized it was a new desire, already rooted alongside that other desire that defined everything she was and did. It felt as dangerous as an arrowhead lodged in her body, as though at any moment it might work its way in deeper and cause some fatal injury.
and marries her. I love this, because I'm a huge sucker for "I am a very bad person and I love you and hope you will keep me in line" ships, and this is explicitly part of their deal!
However, after fights about less taboo atrocities, Ma comes back to Zhu after Zhu kills an eight year old Ma is attached to (for being a ?dalai lama? who is inconvenient to Zhu's goals), so it's a little unclear to me how much Ma is going to keep this function.

during her time in the bunker, cindy didn't really have a whole lot of human contact. so when she wasn't training, her face was either in a sketchbook (sketching MEMORIES of her family) or a novel. if she's every socially overwhelmed, look up in a HIGH place--she's probably hanging there reading or drawing
she loves to garden--her apartment is full of flowers she's grown. if she had the house space for it, she'd have a greenhouse where she'd spend time gardening, reading, listening to music--her HAPPY place
knitting--cindy is truly RIGHT brained. anything creative appeals to her. sometimes if she's just sitting back with her little brother or even gwen, she's knitting something. a hat/sweater--socks, you name it! she's gotta keep her hands busy; none of this should be surprising for a WOMAN who knit her first suit out of webs

claustrophobia: extreme fear of confined spaces. this is self-explanatory. after the bunker, being locked away for a decade…cindy never wants to feel confined again. after peter freed her (and that’s exactly what he did and for that she will always consider him family), she made a vow to never allow herself to feel that restriction again. occasionally she’ll face panic attacks if she feels confined

it Almost feels like a copout to answer wilmon but its genuine. the great thing about young royals is just how juicy meaty delicious the story and characters are. there is SO MUCH to explore that i COULD sit here writing for the rest of my life and still feel like their are aspects of the story i have yet to explore, y'know? blessed with the BEST fandom and the BEST material

so there is this user on ao3 called embracedthevoid, i dont know if youve heard of them but theyre amazing and prolific and so so sooooo talented
ok while that was definitely genuine, really the thing with the young royals fandom is that the fic writing community is SO incredible and so close knit. i consider so many of you my friends so there is no universe in which i could pic three, it's just. i couldn't.
so instead, here are three non-YR authors that have inspired me in some way:
iknowitainteasy - this one is obvious. the author of little numbers, which not only sparked my love of fanfiction well over a decade ago, but also inspired the fic that got me to enjoy writing really for the first time ever. a MASTERCLASS in immersive storytelling and combining humor with emotion, there is not a Day of my life where i don't think about this fic and how much it has done for me
cacophonylights - when someone asks me what my favorite fic of all time is, i have an Easy Answer that has remained unchanged for twelve years. a change in the weather permanently altered my brain chemistry. it is enemies to lovers executed with Masterful precision. so much of how i think about story structure i learned from this fic, too. i know it's perpetually incomplete, but the emotional arc the story set up was still so Well Constructed. i marvel about it All The Damn Time. my FAVORITE forever
finalizer - this is a VERY recent one and maybe it's recency bias but also maybe it's just that GOOD, but. i've read anyone else at least thirty times in the past three weeks. this author UNDERSTANDS pacat in a way that i find suspicious, almost. like, have we seen ao3 user finalizer and cs pacat in the same room????? this fic is singlehandedly tiding me over until we get dark rise book 3 and for that i am grateful

The Church needs to resist this attempt by the state to recreate humanity in its own image. They will also need to use eugenics as a means of standardising the human product. He talks about how governments will need to offer economic security and use drugs, as well as create a pre-conditioned status for its citizens. The Church should make people question and challenge, so that we will recognise the illness and accept the remedy. The state wants to make us content and silent so that we will not question. They know nothing different and need to be shaken out of that soporific complacency. But in much of modern society, people are bound in sin, but are happy to be that way. One of the problems in Christian evangelism is that we too often assume that people are basically unhappy and are just longing for a way out. "The most important Manhattan projects of the future will be vast government sponsored inquiries into what the politicians and the participating scientists will call 'the problem of happiness' - in other words, the problem of people making people love their servitude." The greatest problem facing the Christian church today is not that our message is rejected but that it is not heard. Sometimes it is not so much what we discuss but what we do not or are not permitted to discuss. Great is the truth, but still greater, from a practical point of view is silence about truth." That sounds eerily familiar! How will we love our servitude? Not just by the kind of propaganda Orwell wrote of in 1984 but by silence: "The greatest triumphs of propaganda have been accomplished, not by doing something, but by refraining from doing. He then explains how "a really efficient totalitarian state would be one in which the all-powerful executive of political bosses and their army of managers control the population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude." The Church at its best has always recognised that. He recognises that: "This really revolutionary revolution is to be achieved, not in the external world, but in the souls and flesh of human beings." Huxley explains that his novel is about the advancement of science as it affects others. Here are some quotes and lessons I hope we can learn for the church. It is a revealing and astounding addition because much of what he shares in it we can see happening today – 85 years later. Recently I came across Huxley's 1946 introductory essay to his book. This book, written in 1932, foresaw a 'soft totalitarianism' of absolute government where conformity was enforced, as Margaret Attwood summarises it, by bio-engineering, hypnotic persuasion, endless consumption, state encouraged sexual promiscuity, drugs and a caste 'class' system where everyone fulfils their pre-ordained function. But there is another secular 'prophet' who in my view was astonishingly prescient and that is Aldous Huxley, the author of amongst other books, Brave New World. Looking back, I see CS Lewis, Francis Schaeffer and today, Os Guinness, as Christian prophets who saw where we were going and accurately predicted the state we have now found ourselves in. I am amazed that it is secular commentators like Jordan Peterson and Doug Murray who seem to have a better grasp of the bigger picture than many Christian ones. He is also able to teach us through those who are not his people. We need to constantly remind ourselves that the Lord is sovereign and can even use what men meant for ill, to bring about good (as we see for example with Joseph's brothers). In today's world of Covid, vaccine passports, police raiding churches, endemic sexual abuse, gender confusion, disillusionment with government, there can be a temptation for the Christian to either despair and retreat, or despair and end up fighting the wrong battles. What is happening in the world? Sometimes we stand so close that we cannot see the bigger picture.

One of the most popular career choices for students after class 12th is to become a Chartered Accountant in India. All CA exams are administered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, a national professional accounting body in the nation. Students must prepare for the ICAI CA Midterm Exam for eight months after enrolling. After passing the mid-level exams offered by the Indian Cost Accountants Association (ICAA) or the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), candidates can start their position as an articled student (IIC). A three-year degree is an articleship. Following that, candidates should adhere to the following rules:
After passing both CA midterm groups, take the CA final exam.
Candidates must finish the 4-week AICITS training before taking the final exam and completing the final two years of practice.

Ghost Recon Wildlands
Ghost Recon Wildlands is a spin-off from the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive series and it’s a welcome addition to the franchise. The graphics are almost exactly like the original PS2 game, but with a twist. You play as a member of the U.S. armed forces and you are sent on a mission to take down an Iron Islands terrorist threat. The mission is simple, but the execution is what sets the game apart. The team tactics, combined with the incredible visual novel-like storytelling, make Ghost Recon Wildlands one of the best games of all time. There are several versions of the game available and each is different in terms of the combat system and story, but the general idea is the same.
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm to be Freaked Out
Finally, we have Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm to be Freaked Out. Once again, the graphics are very similar to that of Final Fantasy X, but in an alternate universe with magical creatures, super gear, and an ancient, powerful enemy. The plot is quite similar to that of Final Fantasy Type-0, but the faction and leader changes are even more interesting. You play as a summoner who is trying to complete quests and complete them in a team. There are multiple versions of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm to be Freaked Out available and each is different. The best part about this game is that you can play it on the go! While you can only play the demo, you can watch the latest trailers, or play the standard play, on the go.
Destiny 2
In addition to everything we’ve mentioned above, we have one more classic that is very popular among Destiny fans. This is the classic arcade mode called Mythology. The demo is pretty decent, but the real reason anyone would want to play this game is to switch classes and take up a new weapon type. You can play it on the go as well, so you can take your party along with you and stand-in for any other teacher that needs a special student.
Portal Knight Collection for the PS VR
Finally, there’s a classic that we’ve been seeing a lot in the northern part of the world for the last few years. It’s called the PlayStation VR Portal, and you can watch the adverts for it, but the point is that it’s a great VR game. It’s a simple but very easy game to pick up and play, even if you don’t play the original games. It features the classic controls, and among other things, you can use the PS VR’s included stylus to make some customizations to your play experience. It’s a great game that you can pick up and play again and again.
