My Rawgust Experience... and Raw Avo & Tomato 'Toast'
'Rawgust' is over and we are rolling swiftly into September!
I thought I'd take a moment on this sunny Sunday morning to reflect on a few thoughts of my 'raw food' experience. As I mentioned in my previous post I didn't maintain a 100% raw diet, it was more like 85% as my view was to see it as an exploration and open my mind to new recipes and ideas, rather than a restriction which I may have felt had I been super strict.
This decision to go 'high raw' rather than fully raw was partly based on the fact I had a few family commitments and events I knew I would be attending which would have made life difficult. I decided that a 'high raw diet' would allow me to appreciate most of the benefits and enable me to broaden my raw food repertoire without it feeling pressured or frustrated.
Overall I really enjoyed the month, initially I did miss big hot bowls of porridge (yes, I still eat porridge in the summertime!) and I really missed beans and lentils- such a staple in my everyday diet.
That being said, I really threw myself into creating some amazing salads and lots of raw dressings and dips to go with them. For me, a good dressing can turn any salad from average to amazing :-) 
This is definitely something I'll be continuing, as I'd like to aim for at least 50% raw ongoing- basically, i'll be incorporating a smoothie and a big salad every day- pretty easy, right!
I'll post a recipe round up of loads of sauces, dressing and dips from my vegan community in a separate post- hopefully, there'll be lots to inspire you too!
My boyfriend, who took the challenge along with me- who also reminded me that it was his idea in the first place (credit where it's due!!) has, for the time being, decided to maintain a 75-80% raw diet, so we'll still be eating a lot of raw meals together. 
My downfall (if anything) was eating too many Bliss Balls, ha ha. I often get carried away anyway when I make them, but during Rawgust I fell into the trap of having even more excuse to indulge.
Many people I know who eat raw, typically follow a high-fruit diet. This is something I have never felt really suits me. When I've experimented with an 801010 (80% carbs, 10% fat 10% protein) style diet in the past I ended up feeling incredibly bloated with the ratio of fruit. I feel I need to incorporate more fats. Maybe that was why one of my favourite meals last month was avocado and tomato on dehydrated flax crackers.
That said, my digestion was, for the most part, really great this last month, even though I have had some tough personal challenges to content with (stress usually impacts my bowels- sorry TMI!) My tummy felt flat and I have lost a little weight. Maybe that's down to the lack of legumes and/or grains... who knows? It will be interesting to see what happens as I add them back.
I'm also not convinced that a fully raw diet is particularly suited to our UK climate during the colder winter months. I know the idea of a nourishing warm meal really soothes me and the abundance root vegetables help ground me. I wouldn't want to forgo soups and stews indefinitely regardless of any nutritional science. 
I know there are ways to create 'warmth' in the body whilst consuming raw foods by using ginger and other warming spices to 'fire up' the body, but nothing compares to a big bowl of soup in my opinion! :-) 
I also query the environmental angle. I like the idea of aiming to eat more seasonally and locally, (although i'll make it clear I'm not perfect at this by any means), so feasting on tropical fruits shipped from far overseas during our cold winter months, doesn't quite sit right with me. I want to enjoy our abundance of winter vegetable roots and brassicas from the ground during this time.
One final point of interest... I was scanning through all my old health and wellness magazines, as part of my declutter ahead of moving house in a couple of weeks and I found various articles on Ayurveda. I am definitely a Vata Dosha and interestingly one of the things it advised 'Vata's' against was to consume raw foods... how interesting!
I have not looked deeply into the reasoning behind this (but now I am curious to know more), but it did remind me that there is never a 'one size fits all approach' when it comes to food, and that we all need to be intuitive eaters when it comes to what we feel our bodies need.  
As an example, I would never directly advise others to eat animal products BUT I do appreciate that we each need to find out own way and tune into what really works for us away from societies expectation and the pressure from the media and those around us.
Most of all, I believe we need to become more curious, more self-aware, more confident and relaxed around food.
Short terms 'Detoxes' and Challenges' (such as Rawgust) create the perfect opportunity for shaking things up, trying new things, re-setting our bodies systems, checking in with any symptoms that might be showing up and reflecting on what we really need deep down.
To break the pattern of the autopilot mode that so many of us function on day to day when it comes to food and lifestyle.
So on that note, I am going to leave you with the recipe for my favourite avocado and tomato salad on raw flax crackers.... ridiculously simple, and definitely one I'll keep on weekly repeat.

Recipe: Raw Avo & Tomato 'Toast'
Ingredients:
1 avocado
A large handful of cherry tomatoes
Dehydrated flax crackers (quantity to suit appetite!) 
Fresh basil
Salt and pepper
Sprinkle of nutritional yeast (optional)
Salad leaves (optional)
Flax Cracker Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup ground flaxseeds 
1 cup sunflower seeds, soaked overnight 
1 cup walnuts, soaked overnight 
1 stick of celery, roughly chopped  
1 red onion, roughly chopped 
1/2 cup sun-dried tomatoes in oil (including the oil)
1 tsp Himalayan salt
1-2 tsp mixed dried herbs (or other herbs/spices to suit)
a few tbs water to create the right consistency (add gradually)
Method for the flax crackers:
Blitz all ingredients together in a food processor, until thick and sticky, adding a little water add needed (I used approx 1/3 of a cup)
Spread the mix to a 0.5 cm thickness over teflex dehydrator sheets. 
Dehydrate at 45C for approx 10 hours, turn over and place onto mesh sheets and return to the dehydrator for another 4 hours. 
Cut into any desired slices. Can be stored in an airtight container for up to two weeks. 
Method for the avo 'toast':
There is no real method.... just assemble everything on top of the crackers!
You can slice your flax bread/crackers into larger 'bread style' squares but because I make mine in a large batch I had pre-cut them into small squares for versatility. Either is fine.
NOTE: I originally made a version of this style of raw bread/cracker HERE. At that time I also tried a second batch and spread it out on a lined baking sheet at 'baked' it for approximately two hours on my lowest oven temperature (approx. 80ºC). I covered it loosely with foil after 1 hour to ensure the most even cook. It worked well so it's an option to try if you don't have access to a dehydrator.

[10] using aloe vera solution to stomatitis and pain intensity in patient who undergoing chemotherapy procedures and the results were obtained that using of aloe vera solution to reduce the pain of chemotherapy to stomatitis patients are very effective with statistical test results on third day (on the 3rd day)-14th day P : 0.001 (stomatitis intensity) and P: 0.001 (pain intensity).

Pain is common symptoms of many medical problems. Which indicates tissue damage [15]. Pain has several types such as acute pain, chronic pain, migraine, musculoskeletal, post surgery pain, neuropathic pain, nociceptic and others [16]. One of causes of pain is wound caused by various health problems. Most researching literature reviews that discuss the using of aloe vera therapy through skin. Skin is one of organs as a protector which has function as a receiver regulate humidity, temperature modulation [17]. In 9 researching articles conducted by literature review identify ways to speed the wound healing process and reduce intensity of paint from various health problems with treatment using aloe vera. But we can the type or form of aloe vera which given in the treatment is gel, cream, solution, juice and oil which given through skin. Of 9 articles there was only one researching article which investigate treatment with using aloe vera in a type of solution in stomatitis done by gargling. Whereas it is known that one of the most effective absorption of drugs through skin is solution and liquid [18].
All the results of researching conducted by literature review prove that aloe vera is very use full for used to wound healing process. Aloe vera gel topical using is done by application it to skiing as medicine for skin conditions such as burns, psoriasis, wound and can be taken orally (through mouth) for conditions including osteoarthritis, intestinal disease, fever [19]. Pharmacological action of this get has assessed through in vitro and in vivo experiments. Preclinical researching results provide evidence that aloe vera has activity as anti-inflammatory, antirheumatic, anti-bacterial, and hypoglycemic [20]. Health benefits aloe vera include the application in wound healing process, treat burns and given to protection against skin damage from Aloe vera is a plan that can produce X-rays [21]. Aloe vera is a plant that can produce sap and gel. The gel is extracted from the leaves, and this is the most widely used substance as a treatment [22]. Different from traditional treatment modalities, aloe vera will great reduce medical cost intended as complementary therapy [23]. This paper is still limited in research using aloe vera to speed up the wound healing process and reduce intensity of pain from various health problems, in the type of gel, juice, cream, and especially solution and liquid. More researching is needed on the efficacy of aloe vera in curing various health problems [24,25] Table 2.

The using of treatment that uses aloe vera has been proven to accelerate the wound healing process and reduce pain intensity in some health problems than other comparison groups and also serves as an improvement in the skin pigmentation

Hey all!
After an EXTREMELY LONG HIATUS, I am back in the habit of writing an illustrating for Ironbeak’s Journal again. So where are the new entries? Well, this week, they are actually ... the old entries. I’ve been doing some editing of art and writing on the first 30 or so entries to bring them in line with the style of the more recent ones (the ones where I’ve actually planned out what I’m doing in advance and have a better handle on what Ironbeak looks and sounds like).

And I’ll be continuing to edit art and text through tomorrow.
Most of the text edits are minor, but I wanted to assure anyone who’s rereading and has a really good memory that they aren’t going crazy. The only major overhaul of an entry occurred with Log 20: The Reading Room, which is now quite a bit different to bring it in line with the lore I’ve decided on for the Glitch.
Here’s the old version for your enjoyment (or not--I always wanted to redo this one cause it bothered me, lol).
Log 20: The Reading Room
      "Mr. Vanderbuilt--" I said, rising from my seat, as he entered the Reading Room.     "Please, just Vander." He spoke in Glitch, but dropped the conversational expressives in favor of greater intonation, as I did. His voice was hoarse without the audio filters running. It sounded as though he was still smiling beneath what I now knew was a helmet.     "A pun," I said lamely.     "I took it as my pseudonym when I first arrived here. That was almost thirty  years ago." He removed his metal head and set it gently upon a desk, then turned to face me. This was my first look at an Apex in the flesh. Even in the dark, it was clear he cut his own hair.     The reading room was cozy and warm, with three couches encircling a low, round table, and several desks messily crammed with writing utensils. On the wall appeared to be the library's reserve collection of artwork. Mr. Vanderbuilt Vander lit an oil lamp on the desk beside his false head, and we both took a seat.
    "When word gets around that your beacon summoned the Penguins, there's going to be a lot of distrust coming your way," he said.     "You know?"     "Of course I know. Some of us even saw the ship as it descended. But none of the townsfolk has ever actually seen a Penguin ship. A few may have read about them, as I do have a book or two on the topic. But it won’t be until Dosskey spreads the word that most folks here will get the news. And that's when your status as the Friendly Foreigner may erode a bit.” He put his ironclad feet up on the table. "There are already a few who don't take kindly to your presence. Maybe you've noticed. They think you'll corrupt the youth, put harmful ideas about space travel in their head."     "I know nobody from this town has flown since ... well, since it was founded, that much was clear as soon as I started asking around for ship repairs. But--harmful ideas? Really?"     "This town was founded by Outcasts. As you well know, having borrowed Founding Forges last week. You did read it, didn't you?"     "Well ... yes, I did. But ... not in full. I admit, I found the book on sellomander biology to be a little more captivating."     "Having seen your illustrations, I figured you might. But I'll fill you in." Vander stood and began to pace the room, hands behind his back, like a professor giving a lecture.
    "Do you know what an Outcast is?"     "I didn’t know there would be a test," I said, and he responded with an appreciative laugh. "I know the Glitch on Avos were ejected from Glitch society for whatever reasons. But for a lot of them, it happened generations back. Space travel must have brought those to the Alpha Hamal system just as it brought those to Avos."     "Yes. There are quite a few independent colonies in the galaxy. But traditional Glitch society is a sort of feudal collectivism. In its truest form, every member of society is intimately connected via a massive neural network called a Hivemind. Serverside, thankfully, has no such thing. If it did, I would have no chance of passing as an ordinary citizen.     Serverside does, however, closely ahere to the same collectivist culture in which most Glitch are comfortable. Those that stray from traditionalist values of work ethic, family values, simple living ... let me put it this way: despite being a direct example of extremely advanced technology, the Glitch themselves are Luddites. It’s not in their nature to explore, but they will out of necessity. And more often than not, those who are cast out are most apt to survive elsewhere."     "So they excommunicate people for what, studying engineering?"     "Exactly that. Mechanical though they are, Glitch are not robots. But they didn't evolve like you or I. They were created, and they were programmed. Legend has it that they were created to enact some sort of grand social simulation. The truth is hard to uncover, because those of the original Glitch civilizations don't believe they are acting on programming at all." He sounded like he was rambling. Perhaps he’d been waiting to talk to someone about this for a long time.     "But ... they program their own children,” I said. “When they’re created, or what have you. Even if they believe the code to be as fundamental as DNA ... surely they must realize that there was a ... prime mover?"     "Ha, aptly said. But that's just it. The Kluex priesthood--would they have you believe that your existence is the result of evolutionary happenstance? That the whole Avian race is just a byproduct of its surroundings, and that a few mundane twists of environment or inheritance might have had a different race rise to sentience on Avos? Of course not. It is for the Glitch as it is for many of your people: their existence was divinely foretold. What many have tried to explain to them is hardwired by their creators, they believe to be divinely inspired."     Considering the fantastical mythology I’d grown up with, the difference between divine creators and mundane inventors seemed like semantics. Still, I asked, “And you think it's their programming that causes them to remain technologically primitive?"     "I do. But some Glitch break the mold. Like genetic mutants, they often benefit from their unique abilities. They are aware that their fellows appear to be stuck in the feudal era, and they seek to surpass it. Most Outcasts have an innate fascination with astronomy, space travel, and alien cultures. And they're almost always persecuted for it."     "Even in a town like this? So recently founded by space travelers? You don't really think Serverside would ostracize someone just for an interest in space travel, do you?"
    "I know they already have,” he answered. "Outcasts simply don't do well in traditional Glitch societies. Usually, sudden self-awareness is brought on by an injury. Occasionally, it is present from birth. Even more rarely is it inherited. The Founders of Serverside, I think, were hoping that if they brought together enough Outcasts, that they could hand it down from generation to generation.
    But many Glitch colonies suffer similar fates. Though the founders did their best to build and program their children, they could not fight nature.” As a biologist, I couldn’t help a derisive snort. Vander paused to shoot me a you know what I meant glare before continuing. “By bringing so many Glitch together in this community, the Founders have most likely doomed them to repeat history."     "Are you saying the Glitch can't ... evolve, socially?"     "I don't know. But when this town was founded just a few hundred years ago, it was by all accounts a peaceful anarchy. Not lawless, mind you ... but no formal judicial system existed for nearly a hundred years. Now Serverside is a democracy, and there have been talks for decades of holding a mayoral election. How long do you think it will be before they have a king?"     "I'm no political scientist, but it seems just as likely that this is a natural progression of government. Any sentient race could have walked down the path you're describing."     "Maybe so. But I have been living in this town and curating its history for quite some time now. To me, the pattern is clear: the townsfolk are growing more fond of a traditional lifestyle every day. Even Dosskey's interest in guns is seen as questionable."     "Can't they be ... deprogrammed, somehow?"     "Attempts have been made by the Glitch themselves to create a Better Glitch. The experimentors found that tampering with the software--even slightly--had dire consequences. I'm sure you read about that in 'Mistakes to Avoid,' eh?     "I did. It wasn't specific on the consequences, but it was fairly heavy-handed about following the instruction manual, yes. I assumed it was a matter of tradition."     "And so it is, my good fellow. But you may unravel that mystery soon enough."

A lot of people have been asking for me to post more plant based recipes, so I’ll be posting some with every prep I do!
All plant based/vegan 🌿
Seasonings are subjective based on personal preference and amounts of food you’re making. I start off with ¼-½ tsp then add as I go.
Oils I use for cooking/baking/high temps are avocado and grape seed because they have high specific heats. Olive oil doesn’t so I only use it raw for topping on salads/pasta etc.
▪️Garbanzo beans (chickpeas) -Dried, soaked overnight (these were soaked 3 days to sprout, look up benefits and how to’s On sprouting), cooked low in a crock pot with bay leaves for 5-6 hours. -I season later depending on dishes I’ll be adding them to
▪️Baked potatoes/Sweet peppers -potatoes with avo oil, dill, thyme, oregano, sweet basil, pink Himalayan salt, cumin -sweet peppers baked with no seasoning
▪️Quinoa with sautéed mushrooms -quinoa made normally and added cumin, pink Himalayan salt, grounded kelp, onion and garlic powder, cayenne pepper -marinated mushrooms in coconut aminos, Dijon mustard, garlic and onion powder, minced garlic, cumin, pink Himalayan salt, then sautéed and added to quinoa
▪️Zucchini noodles -sautéed with garlic and onion powder, cumin, pink Himalayan salt -separately sautéed grape tomatoes, red/orange sweet peppers, green hot pepper, onions, then added to zucchini noodles. Added a small amount of sesame oil for extra flavor
▪️Apple Cabbage -Basted Cabbage in Apple cider vinegar and balsamic vinegar (not too much, just to prevent drying and to get enough flavor for the dish) -added in sliced green Apple and around a tablespoon of coconut palm sugar (I don’t use white sugar cause it’s basically poison lol), just to balance out the intensity of vinegar -pink Himalayan salt and some onion powder
▪️Sautéed Collard Greens -sautéed onions in avo oil, then added in collards, cumin, onion and garlic powder, and pink Himalayan salt
▪️Baked squash and “cheesy glaze” -Baked squash with no seasonings -Homemade cheese made with soaked walnuts/Brazil nuts, water, nutritional yeast, sweet onions, minced garlic, onion and garlic powder, pink Himalayan salt, paprika

The Finale - Chickpea Taco Bowl

So guys it’s come to my final post! I can’t believe I’m at the end of my food journey with you! While I am sad it’s come to an end I am also proud of my journey and what I have accomplished.
I can notice my progress when I compare my first traditional post and video post to my most recent one. By progress I mean food placement, images and how I filmed my video. I have defiantly come a long way in the past few weeks and if I kept working on my blog could go even further!
 For my final recipe I have made a chickpea Mexican bowl! Honestly I should have just made this blog all about recipes in bowls but it's a bit late now.   
This bowl is packed with delicious fresh ingredients. The bowl has brown rice, chickpeas cooked in Mexican spices and some fresh veggies! Can't forget the jalapenos, salsa and sour cream (we are cooking Mexican food of course).
In terms of health benefits, this bowl has chickpeas which are known for being packed with protein and are high in fiber. I have used brown rice instead of white rice as it contains more key vitamins and is less fattening.  So that's the base of the bowl done, then I just loaded it with onion, corn, tomato, jalapenos, cheese, sour cream, salsa, cilantro and some homemade guac! This bowl is so simple and creates an epic taste! A must try for all you guys reading. So let’s get started.
RECIPE- Makes: 4 Prep time: 15 mins Cook time: 15 mins

INGREDIENTS- 
Taco seasoning:
½ tbsp. chili powder
½ tbsp. paprika
½ tsp cumin
¼ oregano
¼ tsp salt
¼ tsp black pepper
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
¼ water
 Chickpea Mix –
1 can of chick peas
¼ onion
1 tbsp. minced garlic or (one clove of fresh garlic)
1 can of diced tomato

The rest –
1 tomato diced
1 cob of corn cut off the cob
¼ red onion diced
2 pack of instant cook brown rice ( one pack serves 2)
1 lime
1 lemon
shredded cheese
sour cream
salsa
 Guac –
1 avocado
half a handful of cilantro
salt and pepper
handful of red onion
handful of diced tomato
1 lemon wedge
1 lime wedge
 METHOD:
1.     Dice all the veggies and cook the corn and put it aside
2.     Next mix avo and the guacamole ingredients into a separate bowl
3.     Mix all the taco seasoning in a bowl with the water (it’s good to get this done first to avoid rushing while the chickpeas are in the pan)
4.     Meanwhile heat oil on a pan over medium heat and cook the garlic and onion until its brown
5.     Add the chickpeas and the seasoning and stir for a few minutes
6.     Add the can of diced tomato and bring to boil for around 5 minutes, then let it simmer on low to medium for another 5- 10 minutes. (until the sauce starts to thicken up)
7.     While the chickpeas are cooking, cook the rice in the microwave
8.     Evenly distribute the rice and veggies, sour cream, salsa etc. into bowls
9.     Once the chickpeas are done add them to the bowl
10.  Don't forget the Guac guys and you’re ready to eat!
