#because they won't enrich their cats in their own spaces

today when I got home, I parked my car and one of the cats that hangs around my yard (stray? outdoor cat? feral? nuisance, is what it is, and a direct danger to my birds) was in my fenced backyard area. Saw me coming and took off bounding at Top Catte Speed because every time I see another fucking cat in my yard, I chase it off yelling and clapping. Took off so fast it did not see the fence coming. Barreled straight into it, pinged off it like a high-speed roomba, and began running a new direction. A minute later I saw him trotting to the neighbor's in the distance, dignity in shambles.

I saw your tags on that cat post you reblogged from me, and if I can add my two cents, there are safe ways to give cats outdoor enrichment. Leash training is one. My parents have a cat-safe area in the backyard that is carefully fenced so the cats can be outdoors without "getting out." Cat patios are a thing. There are also cat tents that you can use to take your cat outside but keep them enclosed. If you have a cat from a kitten, you can train them to be outside and supervised (and in my experience, if you raise a kitten to be indoor-only, they won't really know the outdoors exists and won't want to go out). But if none are feasible options and your inside space is too tiny to enrich a cat, you shouldn't have one. As the post and numerous other examples of research have established, letting cats run loose unsupervised outside is terrible for the ecosystem and cat. I know it's kind of hard to address the fact that the way people are used to taking care of indoor-outdoor or outdoor cats is neglectful, if not abusive, especially if you in the past have allowed that. I mean, you love your cats; you don't want to think that what you did was dangerous or was hurting them. But I think it's important to overcome those initial emotions of guilt, shame, etc., and just accept that keeping your cats inside (or finding safe ways to be outdoors) is an aspect of protecting their welfare. The responsibility of caring for a cat or any pet sometimes means not letting them do something they want to do because you know it is bad for them. Like, my cat tries to eat plastic. I'm not going to let him eat plastic because he might choke on it even if he thinks it's a fun, forbidden snack. It's the same thing.
Feel free to reply publically, privately, or not at all, I just noticed your tags, and since I feel strongly on the subject, I wanted to share my perspective.
This is actually really informative so thank you.
I am aware a lot of my issues with cats going out is probably my own guilt at keeping an animal inside. I know lead training is important for cats as kittens if you do want to walk them outside which isn’t always something you can guarantee especially getting rescue cats. But securing your garden or having a catio isn’t something I’d really thought about. I suppose I don’t question making sure your dog is secure in your home and garden so I should have the same attitude to cats but after having cats who have been free to go outside it’s a hard mindset to break after so many years but that’s a me issue.
One thing I am aware is significant is the prevalence of FIV in outdoor cats which is why so many rescues want you to keep your pet indoors or in a safe space to stop the spear. FIV is significant as it can be spread to other cats which you might not be aware of when your cat is out without your supervision and it’s not something you want your cat to get as although it’s manageable but can cause serious illness and is so easily spread between cats. It’s one of the key reasons why I’ve thought about keeping cats indoors as I wasn’t aware it was something cats could get until a couple of years ago and although I don’t live on a very busy road I always worry about cats being outdoors because of cars. Especially as I know most drivers don’t stop after hitting them. That’s one thing I do want is drivers have to stop. They have to for dogs so cats should be the same to see if there’s anything that can be done as soon as possible. Drivers need greater responsibility for sure and although that could be reduced by keeping your cats indoors and watch them outside I am aware they can get out and accidents happen so there should also be the responsibility for drivers too. That’s not to say anyone is placing blame but simply common decency you know?
And that’s my ramble about cats for the day.

🍓TLDR🍓
--A stray lamb, all alone. Very sweet, but bad with people/scared of them. Daydreams a lot/spaces out. Art, music, and fashion are her biggest interests. Can see noise/etc. CAT fan.--
🍓Background: Aku was born to free spirits, and so she never really saw much of her parents save for letters from their travels. Even though she loved them, she resented their abandonment and moved out as soon as she was allowed. This forced her to live on the streets for a short period, but she worked hard to find herself a job that could sustain her enough to get a small apartment on her own. Her social ineptitude made all of this very difficult, but she has since pushed through it enough to at least exist in a functioning capacity. Now she works at a retail store during the day and spends her afternoons exploring Shibuya and drawing in a sketchbook that she carries around.
🍓Abilities: Aku has a second sight that allows her to see noise, players, and reapers. However, as a very creative and dreamy person, Aku has up to this point written it all off as part of her very vivid imagination. She draws the noise in her sketchbook all the time, but she never talks about her visions to anyone else. One could also say that her strong imagination is also an ability.
🍓Personality:
Aku isn't very good with people, but she has learned to cope with her discomfort to the point that she can still hold conversations and even make friends should anyone offer her the chance. She tends to be particularly uncomfortable around loud and explosive people, but as long as their attention isn't on her she has no problem being around them. She gets particularly overwhelmed in spaces that are too crowded or too empty. Streets are fine since she can escape into a back alley when needed, but tightly packed buildings are difficult for her to go into. She also feels uncomfortable in empty buildings where she feels a precedent may be held for her and worries she won't meet expectations. She often wished she could visit Ramen Don or Wildkat and would hang out around their entrances, but ultimately never went in because there just weren't enough people for her to feel comfortable. She regrets those decisions now that both of these places are no longer in business.
Aku loves to enrich her life with art, music, and fashion. CAT had always been one of her favorite artists due to their ability to slip into any medium without trouble at all. While she has no talent outside of pencil and ink, Aku still aspires to be the kind of artist that CAT had managed to become. She tends to not stick to any particular brand, either. She loves to experiment with her fashion and find combinations that would work together from even very different brands. Her top brands tend to stay the same, however.
🍓Relationships: Aku doesn't keep many friends but only because she doesn't actively seek them out. There are a few people who worked on her and talked to her enough to become friends, and she generally doesn't push anyone away that's putting in the effort. When she makes a friend that person will often become very important to her, but she tends not to say so out loud for fear of sounding creepy. Most of the time she just quietly praises them in her head. Her friendships are deeply important to her and her ability to love others freely is strong. She tends to get hurt much worse when something bad happens to a relationship, however. If a friend just sort of fades away and leaves her to go onto other things, she never complains but a part of her feels the same pain that she does thinking about her parents. When it comes to romance, Aku has never pursued such a thing, but she daydreams about it all the time. She doesn't think she's capable of holding a romantic relationship given her orientation and lack of social skills, but a part of her still wishes someone would prove her wrong. She would never be the one to suggest or engage in such a way, however.
🍓Hobbies: Aku loves to draw and write, though she only writes stories and daydreams in her head, and she never puts anything she comes up with online. She carries a sketchbook with some bare bones materials wherever she goes so that she can draw while she's out and about. She particularly enjoys exploring Shibuya and finding any new pieces of graffiti that have come about. While she doesn't consider herself talented enough to attempt it herself, street art in particular has always fascinated Aku. When she isn't drawing she'll often be playing video games or watching some TV show (usually animation), though this is only at night when she goes home. She has a couple of mobile games, but she only ever plays them if she isn't in a place where pulling her sketchbook out would be acceptable.
🍓Brand Chart:
TWEWY: 1)Tigre Punks 2)Hip Snake 3)Natural Puppy 4)Sheep Heavenly 5)Lapin Angelique [Secret]Gatito
NTWEWY: 1)Gatto Nero 2)Monocrow 3)Tigre Punks 4)Top o' Topo 5)Cony×Cony [Secret]Croaky Panic
(These are Aku's top brand picks [plus one extra that she likely would never talk about], but generally speaking, Aku will wear them all and may often wear multiple brands at the same time. It's okay to put her in whatever brand you like!)
🍓Other Information: Aku's design was based on an outfit I got in KHUX (as shown in the screenshot). When the Street Clothes set came out my immediate first thought was that it looked like something from TWEWY, and I built the outfit based on the idea of what Aku might look like in that setting. I intend to revamp the design at some point to be not so branded to KH, but that might take a while. For now I hope you enjoy what's there.
🍓Verses:
daydreamer - This verse takes place before Aku has been informed of the extent of her ability. She believes entirely that the noise are her imagination and may not react strongly to noise unless they are attempting to possess her or someone else.
pre twewy - This verse takes place before the first game. She will most likely be unaware of her abilities
post twewy - This takes place after the first game but before Neo. May take place before, during, or after A New Day.
neo verse - This takes place during and after Neo. Aku may at this time have learned of her abilities and may be skittish around noise.
third eye open - This verse is one in which Aku has been informed of her abilities. She’s more frightened of noise, and witnessing erasure will incapacitate her. She becomes extra weary of people whom she recognizes as inhuman.
new game - This verse takes place after Aku’s death and entrance into the Game. Her entry fee is her imagination, and she is unable to wield pins. She actively seeks angelic people and places, as they give her the sensation of her deeply missed imagination.
Verses may be changed and added at any time -
