Do y'all remember the first YouTube video you ever watched because I had a crazy conversation with a coworker this morning and I have to know which one of us has the more bizarre experience

Does anyone remember that weird period where beauty gurus on youtube and in any sephora you went into would insist that the BEST way to do your makeup was to start with your eyebrows and THEN try to do foundation and concealer around them? and then the penultimate step was always like "and then draw your eyebrows back in wherever you might have smudged them or put concealer over them :) and now we can do lips" as though that was totally normal and not a sign of a fundamentally flawed flow chart? and now all those same beauty gurus start every video by being like "yeah i like to start with my foundation because it just makes everything easier" as though it's some trick they've uncovered and not like... basic common sense. what was that. why did we think that was totally normal and good

pewdiepie, menace to society who is one of the top five most subbed youtube creators ever in the world and is unspeakably rich and connected, does not have professional captions on all his videos.

just a few examples here, but indicative of the prevailing, feckless trend that the vast majority of major creators follow. even if you're lazy and cheap there are several gig economy sites where people will get paid peanuts to spend hours captioning your videos (i should know, i've done it). it's unconscionable that anyone making the equivalent of an upper working class salary off content creation cannot find some way to caption their videos. if youre that strapped just do it yourself. for the love of God. even most people on tiktok will take the time to cc their videos these days.

thinking about the fact that sane universe Isaac is a YouTuber because of COURSE they are.

I'd imagine that they started out mainly with beautuber things like makeup tutorials, product reviews, etc., and branched out later into something more akin to what Jenna Marbles's channel is now. a bit of a variety act- maybe on Thursday he makes pho with his mama, on Friday he goes to a thrift store and has an hour-long video about upcycling that used clothing into a new jacket and pants set, on Monday he has a video doing a movie review, so on and so forth. variety!!

Eddie does a lot of editing for them and tries to not have his own personality put into it, but Isaac INSISTS that the channel is "theirs" so eventually he puts a little more flair into it, adding comments to funny clips nd such. and then the people wanna see MORE of Isaac's bestie because they constantly talk about their shenanigans together on their channel in storytime videos or live streams or even simply going "haha yeah Eddie would say that!!!" to a remark. it takes a lot of warming up to the concept but eventually Eddie is okay with at LEAST letting Isaac's audience hear his voice ....

And then. Of course. Isaac is always a big happy mush about it and goes to him to talk about all these milestones they've reached, no matter how small, these people who made fanart, this fun little Flash game-esque short someone made for them, this pretty bit of crocheting someone was inspired to do because of them,,

there's something wrong with makeup tiktokers like... no this is not an anti makeup post or whatever i love makeup and i love beauty reviewers. idk how to explain but short length content doesn't work for makeup. it really should stay on youtube. not only that, it's like every beauty influencer on tiktok likes every product they try?? like they're so untrustworthy and i feel like half of them don't really know what they're talking about and maybe part of it has to do with the absolute disingenuous performative nature of tiktok where everyone in there is just there to flex... idk man. i also find most of the more popular ones have hella fillers in their faces even if they're young and they always use filters so you never see what the product actually looks like. like of course that happens on youtube too but it's way easier to find people on youtube that are genuinely passionate about makeup and want to make long form content about it and they're genuine about their thoughts and i find especially now it's way more common in the beautube world to not use filters and to use more natural lighting so you can see the products
