FKRG Open Session - March 2019
Our second open session of the year was centred around questions of BEING AND IDENTITY, in both an individual and collective sense.
Tumblr media
(Image provided by Cynthia Florek ♥) "We have many histories, many points of arrival, those who somehow find themselves as 'not,' as not universal, not human. But I still think, I do think, that being not, being in question for being the being you are, is the beginning of an affinity, a beginning that is behind us." - Sara Ahmed, 'Being in Question'
This month we were thinking about how we build a meaningful sense of self, and how labels, names or descriptions are chosen by us and applied to us. How do you interpret your being? Who gets to decide who you are? How do we work with the labels ascribed to us? Where do you fit, and how do you live and work within the cracks?

Readings  (There are a lot of them! Instead of reading out loud together, we shared quiet space to pour over the readings offered, while also taking time to write, reflect, and draw portraits of ourselves and each other).

I'm sharing John Berger's Ways of Seeing, episode 2 which focuses on women in traditional European oil painting. It's kind of dated and retro but I feel like it's still very relevant today. Especially since we do live in a Western / Euro-centric / heteronormative society - it's hard to escape these influences...if you just want the gist of it, watch from 3:15 - 12:50.”)
