Batman: Death in the Family (2020)
Happy Birthday Jason!
It’s hard to put to words how important you are to so many of us. Your 40 years of existence in the dcu may have been arduous and unforgiving, but everything you stand for will always resonate with fans who know and appreciate you.

batman saying he and the joker are intrinsically linked and bound to one another in a way that defies explanation right after the joker fucking straight up murders jason is just a little bit not cool, imo. like maybe don't be so fruity for the villain that just killed your son. have standards, Bruce.

In December, DC plans to publish what they’re calling a “faux-simile” edition of Batman #428, the notorious issue where Jason Todd was killed be the Joker, thanks to a fan vote.

"You know, guns get the job done quickly and blades are fun to hold and swing around, but there's just something special about blunt instruments. Clubs, bats, crowbars, you name it. There's a charm to the kind of damage they can do, dontcha think?"

Not to get all technical all over your comfort characters but I think the reason Jason Todd’s story is so deeply upsetting—the reason fans can see him as a scared kid who was wronged and not just angry and vengeful and full of hate—is because he was not only done an injustice by those around him in his own universe, but because he was done an injustice by the real, actual society, and they didn’t get to run from it.
Jason when he was Robin was never portrayed as angry and violent the way the he is after his death, he had always been just a kid who couldn’t live up to his predecessor, and the fans hated that, they hated him, and they were allowed to because he wasn’t a boy he was just paper, his narrative was actively slandered by the writers to make him unliked by everyone, and then he was voted out of existence by real people.
When Jason is finally brought back in under the red hood, we as fans are forced to face the consequences of our own actions. When he is yelling at Bruce for failing him, we feel it in our guts because really, truly, Bruce isn’t the one that failed him. That was us.

I am a big, BIG fan of Batman: Under the Red Hood. I love the art style and voice cast almost as much as the DCAU, and I think it's criminal, CRIMINAL, that we didn't get to see the other rogues aside from what we saw in this and the sequel, Death in the Family. I have often said to myself that if they made a whole TV series in this art style with this voice cast, I would watch it in a heartbeat and not miss an episode. But what about you guys? Would you watch a show based on this movie? Would you watch more of Bruce Greenwood as Batman, Jensen Ackles as the Redhood, John DiMaggio as the Joker, Wade Williams as the Black Mask, etc?

I'm reading Death in the Family for the first time and it's... a roller coaster. No one ever mentioned that the Joker would be the Iranian ambassador to the U.N. That's... something alright. I get that beating Jason with the crowbar + exploding the warehouse with Jason and his mom inside it to finish them off was the pivotal emotional moment in Batman comics continuity but. He was also a U.N. ambassador with political immunity. Are there any other times he's worked in diplomacy/politics/etc?
Yeah, Joker being the Iranian ambassador to the U.N. is uh... something, alright. We all probably like to pretend it didn't happen. That whole plot line has had plenty of criticisms due to its islamophobic connotations. Having Joker as the epitome of evil and then having him associated with "Arab terrorists"... it's just bad.
Joker being actively involved in politics isn't something that happens ever again in main comic continuity, at least not to my knowledge. And that's good, because Joker simply isn't the kind of character to put in such a position. His whole thing is the mockery and destruction of existing systems, not... participation in them. However, outside of main comic continuity [deep sigh] Frank Miller had Joker involved in politics in his comic Dark Knight Returns: The Golden Child (2019), where he campaigns for a governor that is an obvious Trump stand-in as part of his Evil Plan. Then there's Batman: White Knight (2019), in which Joker gets cured by magical pills and becomes Good Jack Napier (you can probably tell what I think of this plot), running for councilman. And lastly, there's the Harley Quinn show and its third season, in which Joker is running for mayor of Gotham.

Sometimes I wonder how the people that voted to kill of Jason Todd back in 1988 are doing. Like genuinely.
It’s so hilarious to me that DC asked “hey, wanna kill this kid?” And a couple thousand people answered “i sure do!”
Buck-fucking-wild!
I would love to know how these voters like Jason now and if they are mad that he came back. And if they like Red Hood.
And just how their day is going cause they seem like funny people

i genuinely so badly want to see the batman death in the family movie alternate stories and i would even buy it except for some goddamn reason it's a blu-ray exclusive and i can't justify buying a whole-ass blu-ray player just for an hour of additional blorbo content

I myself LOVE John as the Joker. His voice makes him sound unhinged without it being another Mark Hamill impression. But what do y'all think?
