Damians so funny bc at first he genuinely is insecure in his place in the batfam and acts as if he's expecting to be rejected (bc well... he is frequently rejected) but when people actually do get around to assuring him he belongs* he immediately brushes it off and is like "you want a good birthday gift this year or something?"

My weird hot take is that I see Dick and Damian's relationship as paternal largely because I'm obsessed with Dick and Tim's fraternal relationship. It makes more sense in my head that Dick had to prioritize Damian over Tim because he's younger and needed parented rather than choosing "one brother over the other."

Like no, Dick loves Tim to bits, but after Bruce's death, he has to prioritize Batman and Gotham and WE and this literal child who is going to implode if he isn't given a stable parental figure.

And from a story telling perspective it's like, no we don't need to do the whole Dick bonds with his little brother thing. Because we did that with Tim. But Dick raises Bruce's child as his own like Bruce raised him? Now THAT'S a new story.

Small Damian Wayne comic because I recently finished Batman and Robin (2011) and it made me appreciate Damian even more (and inspired me to make this comic) :)

One of the best parts of Batman and Robin is how Cameron Stewart draws comicbook action

Also there's just something about his Dick Grayson, so much earnestness in his face.

They're beautifully drawn, the panels are used in funky ways, the fights are short but he pulls you into every second, there's this crazy sense of fluidity and movement, and (maybe just me) but I can genuinely understand what's going on; like it's not just visual gibberish where you shrug and nod along to the finishing punch.

If Dick didn't have to be Batman or take care of Damian during the 2009/2010 era - what do you think he would've done instead?

I personally lean towards staying in New York, as I know that's where he was living since Bludhaven got nuked. But I don't know anything else more specific since I'm not super versed in Nightwing comics before that particular era. Obviously the Titans would come back into play.......

Some context for the question:

I'm currently writing a frighteningly expansive au where BfTC changes pretty drastically, thus shifting later comics a good bit. TLDR is Cass becomes Batman so Dick doesn't have to, and Bette Kane is the one who takes care of Damian until Bruce returns from his time travel shenanigans. Jason goes through a real Greek tragedy ordeal dealing with his life post-UtRH and post-Bruce's death. Tim's storyline throughout the 2009 era stays the same, he just actually communicates with people just a teeny-tiny bit more. Steph also becomes Batgirl like in canon, but I just don't like a lot of the writing in her Batgirl run - so I'm currently trying to reconcile that with what I think would be a lil better. The au has a very large Bette Kane focus too, as a what-if to Bette being incorporated to the larger dynamics of the "Batfam".

Damian tears off his robin patch and leaves when dick is being annoying in batman and robin and he does the same thing when Bruce is annoying about him not following his orders in that one heretic one-shot. He knows his value he's out if batman gets too annoying

Okay but give me every Bruce & Dick to Dick & Damian parallel you can I fucking live for that shit.

Like Dick seeing this small, angry boy who just lost his father and knowing that oh my god I have to be his Bruce.

And every time Damian gives him shit, he thinks of all the times he made Bruce's life harder. Or every time Damian learns a new move or is kind or smiles, his heart explodes and oh god is this how Bruce felt about me??

But Dick will never know. Because Bruce is gone so now Dick is just haunted carrying out Bruce's life and Bruce's mission and caring for Bruce's son and it's this amalgamation of obligation and family and heartbreak and love that he's been destined for since he was a small, angry boy himself.
