au where the batkids just sort of,,,,,,invent a new batkid

it starts fairly innocuously, a cowl for someone’s costume ends up the wrong shape or the wrong colour. dick, having dropped by the cave to hand off some evidence or beg alfred for his new potato recipe (most likely both), sees it and his instant reaction is oh my god did bruce adopt another child vigilante? he’s colour-coding us now? fucking splendid

the confusion is cleared up quickly, but everyone got such a good laugh out of it that they keep the new helmet, insisting it belongs to bruce’s new kid ecurb. their vigilante name is Shadow The Dark Lad Blackwing Moron-With-An-Orange-Helmet Batbird. ever so creative.

(bruce doesn’t want to know.)

they collectively design a new costume for him. they convince oracle to help them get ecurb into the system, though it really doesn’t take much convincing, just a bit of dick’s puppy eyes and the utter ridiculousness of the situation that has her cackling. ecurb’s backstory is that he was part of travelling circus in america when he was kidnapped, held as a hostage, and tortured by the joker, during which he learned of batman’s true identity and also How To Fight Good, then was sent to kill bruce but was adopted by him instead. he’s a little older than damian but a little younger than duke, fights exclusively with brass knuckles, and his costume is black with orange polka dots.

(bruce really doesn’t want to know)

they talk about good old ecurb, or batbird depending on the company, amongst themselves all the time. good old ecurb, the only bat fast enough to get cass in rooftop tag. i heard ecurb took on bane with nothing but a water balloon and an empty laptop case and won. well i heard ecurb can get the gotham’s corrupt politicians to apologize to him. yeah, well i heard ecurb’s secretly a meta whose power is to neutralize other metahumans, and bruce keeps him as the ultimate contingency plan.

they talk about ecurb so much that the justice league believes bruce really did acquire a new child. other superhero teams are a little more skeptical, but after several select appearances in which different batkids donned batbird’s armour and were conveniently caught on camera, even they start to believe it. the titans really want to meet this new vigilante who can actually, consistently get dick to sleep. young justice want to fight him. but ecrub’s always undercover, or on a mission, or recovering because bruce trusts him so much, he’s already putting him in charge of the big stuff.

(bruce really really doesn’t want to know)

there are legends about ecurb. photos of him looking powerful yet mysterious, a carbon copy of batman but with orange polka dots. there are stories of the villains ecurb took on singlehandedly and won. apparently the green lantern corps contacted him and he turned them down. apparently he infiltrated the fortress of solitude and now is the leading expert on kryptonian tech. ecurb doesn’t fall off a cliff, he just changes the altitude of his fight. ecurb crashed a plane into a mountain and the mountain apologized to him.

they fake ecurb’s death as part of a plan to save the world. over a hundred heroes show up at the funeral. clark’s heart aches at bruce’s red-rimmed, watery eyes. bruce is two seconds away from collapsing on the floor in disbelieving laughter. ecurb rises from the dead a couple weeks later, no worse for the wear. his new costume now includes orange and pink polka dots.

the bats swear to take the secret to the grave.

Tim and Dick both love Doctor Who and bond over it a lot.

Dick is a Star Wars fan while Tim is a Star Trek fan. They butt heads about it occasionally.

Dick stans R2-D2. Tim stans Kirk (and maybe has a crush on him).

(…okay, Dick 100% had a crush on Leia. and dressed up as Han for Halloween once. or several times.)

Meanwhile, Jason’s vibing with Back to the Future and Lost in Space (and the book The Little Prince).

Dick loves the Avatar movies while Jason loves Avatar the Last Airbender. (Jason gives him shit a lot for them having stolen the name.)

There’s just something so intimate and comforting about the issues each member of the batfamily has.

Bruce: Being hyper independent, having paranoia and fear that everyone will leave you so it’s better to stay away anyway. Bruce who has emotional baggage because of all the betrayal he’s gone through and how he can never ask for help even when he needs it. Who has to be logical and prepare for the worst case scenario because he feels safer with a back up plan and is scared of emotional intimacy because he thinks everyone will look at him, break down his walls and then leave when he grows fond and dependent on them. It’s better they fear him, so he doesn’t develop these feelings and get attached.

Dick: Never feeling good enough, always looked upto as the “Golden child” and afraid he might fall off. The guy everyone looks to in times of need so he has to push his own needs aside to help. The mother hen who tries to make sure people never have to go through what he did and are never alone. The one who always seems fine and always helps but barely anyone pays as much attention to how he’s doing so he fakes his way through discomfort, sadness and pain. The one who always has to keep it together for the family.

Jason: Abuse by parents, the trust issues and coping mechanisms has use anger to protect yourself because that’s all you’ve ever known to defend yourself, even when the others intentions are good. Feeling inferior and trying to live up to impossibly high standards, and the fear of failure when you cant. Misinterpreting situations and lashing out trying to block out the other person because that tiny voice telling you people don’t love you is screaming too loudly. Never feeling truly like he is safe and loved despite evidence to contrary and desperate to remember how to survive alone because inevitably he too believes you’d be left alone.

Tim: being underestimated and overlooked. Not too much attention was given and so love, care and going the extra mile are foreign concepts and unbelievable if someone does it for them. Not concerned or can’t bring themselves to care about the behaviour that would concern others but only focused on the next task. Pushing the boys and the mind to work under torturous conditions because you really can’t bring yourself to care about yourself. Assuming you’re an afterthought and people won’t really notice if you’re there or not, and that’s fine by you.. until the right people come in and force you to be okay because they care. The confusion when you realise people actually are pretty cool at times, even when you’ve lost all faith in them.

Damian: Learning from scratch. Trying a completely new thing with no idea how to proceed forwards. Doing what you’ve been taught all your life and getting so frustrated and angry on why things are changing. Being scared but not wanting to show weakness. Wanting to be taken seriously and feeling insecure but trying to work twice as hard not to show it.

Just… just issues that people can relate to, which makes them more comforting and familiar, like there’s someone else out there who’s going through the same things you are, and you can find companionship together. Because after all.. what is more human, then being broken?

The batkids all complain or roll their eyes when Bruce is utterly unshakeable in the face of disaster/conceals injuries/doesn't explain the whole plan to them, but secretly they can't deny the relief that he's a constant rock they can latch onto and trust.

He wasn't good enough for his mom to quit using.

He wasn't enough to save Roy.

He wasn't enough for Bruce to save him, when Bruce moved heaven and earth to try and bring Damian Back.

He wasn't enough to save himself.

He wasn't good enough.

He throws a bottle at a family photo that's been taped up a good few times after he's torn it into shreds, enraged, yet hopeless. There's nothing he can do to change any of it. How do you go on, knowing that all your life was destined to be was 15 short years filled with suffering?

I’m done with angsty, emotionally distant batfam. I want unusually affectionate and emotionally close batfam because it’s all they can do to cope.

After all of their individual as well as shared trauma, they rely on each other for support. They confide in each other because they don’t need to lie or hide anything to maintain secret identities or personality fronts. They never need to pretend with each other. They share affection openly and frequently because they are all vividly aware that what they do is dangerous and any one of them could die any night, and they don’t want anything left unsaid. They’ve all dealt with grief and they overcompensate by trying to avoid all of their regrets preemptively.

Their individual support systems grow over time to include people outside of the family; close friends, partners, etc. But their family will always be their first and most prominent source of safety and comfort.

Batfamily headcanons LGBTQ+ Edition

Bruce Wayne is the definition of chaotic bisexual

He doesn’t flaunt it per say, he did grow up in a time where being homosexual was still a crime and frowned upon

But he definitely lets his kids know when he gets them. If anything to show that they’ll always be welcomed regardless of identity or orientation

Also is very much cis but he tries to help any of his children’s journey

Dick Grayson is chaotic Pansexual. Emphases on the chaotic

I mean he’s dated an alien before. My man does NOT care

He’s non-binary and uses He/Them

Barbara Gordon is demisexual and biromantic

Cis and uses she/her

Jason Todd is demiromantic and bisexual

He has to have a strong emotional bond before any romantic feelings come up.

He’s cis but uses He/Them

Cassandra Cain is definitely lesbian but asexual

Doesn’t quite understand gender identify but prefers they/them

Tim Drake is canonical bisexual so we'll leave that there

They’re gender fluid and uses they/them mostly but on some days there more female uses she/her and same for male days

They have a little pin to show how they feel that day. Bruce got it for them.

Stephanie Brown is pansexual (you can’t change my mind)

Just loves everyone

Cis and uses she/her

Duke Thomas is asexual and pan romantic

Non binary and uses he/them

Damian Wayne is still figuring himself out

I don't think the LOA would really put any training towards identity so he's still learning

But he seems to lean towards gay as of now

Not sure if this is any good. Wanted to try writing again after almost 10 years of not witing. Please please tell me if somethings wrong or off or bad. I'm pansexual and gender fluid myself but that doesn't mean I don't make mistakes.

He took it from Talia, and at first it started out as something to kindly say back to her when she would ask him if he was dating or interested in anyone, but when he finds his actual beloved he really does say it as a term of endearment. Maybe it is Kyle. Beloved blurted out one night when they are sitting next to each other. Maybe it is Barbara. Written out on a note he leaves on her desk. Maybe it is Rose. As a final parting between them.

First post :0 Been fascinated with the idea of an AU where Dick starts out in Cirque Du Soleil instead of as a regular acrobat.

-His parents met through the show. They got married and just stayed on the road, bringing their baby with them.

-They couldn’t keep Dick off the equipment. He was tumbling and practicing right along with the hired child performers, and since he took to it so well they decided to just make it official

-It was either that or continue to yell at him to stop playing with the equipment. Joke’s on them, they still couldn’t stop him from using the silks as a Tarzan swing <3

-Little feathers/wings on the belt, that’s how he gets the Robin nickname from his mom

-He knew he was good. He always heard the adults talking, and besides, he has eyes. It definitely got to his head, made him a little arrogant at best, insufferable at worst.

-All it took was watching his parents be brutally offed in front of him to humble him up :)
