It almost feels silly to address a situation like this with a National Crisis happening, but I also don’t want to ignore problems in my own backyard in lieu of the Bigger Picture. This is what an agro-narcissist/egomaniac looks like. You probably have one in your life or in your comedy community. Best case scenario they don’t support others or only support folks that cater heavily to them (they talk through everyone’s sets, don’t go to shows or watch other comics, leave as soon as they’re done etc.) worst case scenario they are threatening, abusive, and violent. Standing-up to them or speaking out against their abusive behavior will most certainly put a target on your back. That’s fine with me, this isn’t the first time it’s happened to me and it probably won’t be the last. All too often in my life, situations where I’ve had to defend myself or others from abusive or problematic behavior, get boiled down to “beef” amongst two people. As if speaking out publicly or taking a stand against someone instigating verbal, emotional, or physical abuse is in-and-of-itself abusive as well. As if simply stating the truth and bringing attention to a situation publicly makes YOU the problematic one. It ain’t. It don’t. Speak up, stand-up to bullies and abusers. The nail that sticks out will get hammered on but it’s always better to stick out than quietly accept a situation where you have the power to stand-up for what’s right. If enough nails are sticking out of a structure, the building will probably collapse.
