something i will never understand is why "wir kinder from bahnhof zoo" (we children from station zoo) never became as much of an internationally known book as it should have been.
for context: we children from station zoo is based on the true story of christiane f., a girl who grew up in westberlin in the 1970s. with 12, she began smoking pot, and with 13, she was addicted to heroine.
i don't think i need to tell anyone much more about this book for you to know where this story is going to go, and yet, it is absolutely heartwrecking. recent teen shows have had a tendency to romanticise drug use (STARING at euphoria) and this book does the exact opposite.
imo, if you want to keep kids from taking drugs, make them read this book. the worst part is that you're constantly reminded that these children that are engaging in sex work to pay for their drugs were absolutely real. and while it's frustrating reading about their actions, you can understand them too. you can understand why they all constantly relapse and destroy themselves and others.
it's an absolutely fundamental book to understanding drug crises (like the fentanyl + opiod crisis in the us) as well as why children fall for it (the need to belong in this book - i could talk abt it for hours), and understanding addicts. ofc, my opinion isn't going to make it compulsory reading anywhere but i just think that it's an amazing book - not necessarily for its writing style, but for the real humans and the story they're connected to.
also, in some versions, you get pictures from the children in the book. let me just say i stared at this picture for hourse because it is absolutely haunting:

(spoiler alert?) this girl died at 14. she was the youngest heroine overdose victim in westberlin.
anyway, @levithestripper, @demon-of-the-ancient-world, @leithdragon, @ilikeitbetterangsty if you're looking for a new read that will completely mess with your feelings, this is it. the story is so horrendously tragic, and that's what makes it good.
