Maedwyn had probably tried to return to Dalmasca at least 3 times by the end of 6.55
He would've wanted to go immediately after 2.0 but flaked out because he was scared. And because he was ashamed. As a conscript, he had definitely been deployed against his countrymen or their allies, and he killed them. Maybe not all of it was Maedwyn -- between the shock collars, whatever it was Garlean chemists filled his veins with, and the terrible condition they kept him in to keep him under control -- but Maedwyn most definitely made the choice to survive. Even at this cost.
How could he return, then, knowing that? And he couldn't even start to unpack all that without wanting to claw his own skin off. Dalmasca was still under Garlean occupation, his people gasping for breath under its grip. Maedwyn would have to cross over many occupied territories, and as an escaped conscript, he would most certainly be on the wanted list.
He couldn't survive captivity again. He knew that much to be true. And so idled around Eorzea, looking after Alphinaud with a mix of frustration and bemusement, did all that...
Then the Bloody Banquet and its spiral. And Maedwyn picked up Fray, picked up dark knight, and had his own pain of exile scream at him in the face.
So after 3.3, he considered heading back a second time. Moving through occupied territories be damn. Maedwyn thought, numbly, that if he got to die in the land of his birth, that was good enough.
But he had friends who talked him out of that head space, and their concern kept Maedwyn in Eorzea once more. He couldn't run either as it came out that Ilberd had been trying to gather enough traction for a strike at the occupation in Ala Mhigo, and it was easier for Maedwyn to focus on someone else's pain that he shared in rather than his own. So he committed to it.
And, well. He and Raubahn were friends. Their bond was first found on mutual fondness for Nanamo, and once they got talking, they were in quite similar situations. Raubahn's homeland could be given an opportunity. How could Maedwyn be absent for that?
Then the horrors of Stormblood, etc., though it went far better than most for Maedwyn. He saw firsthand what the world under imperialism suffered, but was given the means and the will to push them back. It gave him a second wind like nothing else ever could.
He was looking for a way to head back to Dalmasca, then got involved in the Ivalice raids.
Maedwyn did meet Ba'Gamnan, who recognized him and spat at him for the coward that he was, escaping from the fortress before the end. It wasn't true; Maedwyn was ordered to by the prince, and agreed because the young man pleaded with him, and then was captured. But he had no grounds or spirit to reject an accusation that, at its core, was true.
Fran also pushed him against a wall, but she didn't spit on him. She only hated Maedwyn for not having returned, after he was freed. She demanded to know why he was off gallivanting in Eorzea when their home was suffocating. Maedwyn had no excuse to offer her.
But Fran did know of him. One of the resistance leaders executed was Maedwyn's lover at the time, and the man never gave up on finding him even to the end, even though intelligence suggested Maedwyn was captured and executed by traitors who sold him to Garlemald. Fran had honored his last wish and tracked down what happened to Maedwyn, and thought he died on that deployment that he escaped from.
And she admitted, grudgingly, that there would be more souls glad for his survival than not.
Maedwyn told her he could come back, but Fran told him no. "What is the use? You would be crushed under your guilt if you return," she said, and it was true. "Earn back your honor. Continue to press the empire on the Ala Mhigan front alongside those allies you have found. In doing so you will help us."
So he returned to Eorzea, to a very panicked group of Scions who thought Maedwyn really had left for Dalmasca for real. The naked relief on Alisaie's face made Maedwyn realize he wasn't going to be able to just put this obligation down.
Shadowbringers was uhhhh. Rocky. But Maedwyn committed to it with full fledged fury once Emet-Selch showed himself. And it was karma on Emet-Selch too, because Maedwyn was the most complete and eerily alike to Azem he had ever been. They loved each other once. To have this Azem scorn him every waking moment was its own torment. To have him kill him, though... Maybe it was closer to relief.
Maedwyn also participated majorly in Bozja, half in coordinating attacks and half in strategic assaults that eventually resulted in Bozja's victory. Fran sent him a bottle of Dalmascan wine, the kind Maedwyn and his lover used to drink together, along with a message informing him of their country's emancipation and Noah van Gabranth's death.
But the events of Endwalker demanded Maedwyn's full attention. So again, he didn't head back. And then that was done. And again, he still couldn't bear to go home.
He had grown familiar to the pain of exile. He preferred it, almost, to the thought of going back and tearing old wounds open again. But the Scions, full knowing of Maedwyn's bone-deep ache in this matter, had been gently nudging him to at least visit Dalmasca.
Except oh hey a new distraction! Tural. So he got to put it off for another year, hopefully.

Round 1 - Eliminations:
We must say goodbye to Queen Brahne, General Leo Cristophe, Argath Thadfalus, Borghen, Wiegraf Folles, Volg, Venat, and Ba'Gamnan. So long, and thanks for all the fish.
Congratulations to Chaos, Ravus Nox Fleuret, Emperor Mateus, Garland, Sorceress Edea, Lilitth, Judge Drace, and Ultima! We look forward to seeing you in Round 2!
Here are some of the reasons this lot here were nominated:
Venat: Genderless rainbow entity, definitely a top, what isn't to love? Asexual fuckable representation
It's incorporeal, which some people might say makes it impossible to fuck and therefore inherently unfuckable, but those people are wrong. This is one for the expert-level monsterfuckers.
Leo: His bad hair and death at the hands of a clown have captivated me what can I say
I love morally grey characters… he's working for the evil empire but has a strong moral compass and is, like, actually a kind person. His conversation with Terra on the boat is so good. He may be on the villains' side (why I'm submitting him) but ultimately a 10/10 good guy. Didn't deserve what happened to him.
Ba'Gamnan: He's one of the few options for the furries/scalies. Also he's got a large soap bubble chainsaw wand for a weapon.
I'm a scalie what do you want from me
Volg: Okay I know he's a bird but he's kinda bad though isn't he he's like shadow the hedgehog. He'd be so fuckable if he wasn't a bird but I don't know the ethics or mechanics of fucking a sentient chocobo so maybe that brings the fuckability down a few notches but like imagine it though. Actually I think there's a human version in one of the picture books.
Brahne: kind of a milf. reblog
Wiegraf: Who doesn't get hot and bothered when tragic idealists make Faustian pacts, acquire demonic fursonas, and stomp all over all your save files?
