heyyyyy remember this series? yknow, hermitcraft x the mechanisms, the one i keep thinking ill be able to post about once a week or so? well its actually apparently more of once a month instead haha. anyways heres cleo as ashes! rambling under the cut as usual!

so anyways, the mechanisms are a steampunk band blah blah blah, they play characters as the mechanisms, an immortal space cabaret from the starship aurora travelling the stars having fun violence adventure ...and more violence! they were turned immortal by d. carmilla after dying/nearly dying idk
ashes o'reilly, the one who cleo is based off, has mechanical lungs after getting betrayed in the mob and killed off in a burning building, relevant song backstory here or a live one here in all its 2012 480p recording glory ft jonnys trademark gravelly voice and ashes being ashes (aka being ridicoulously cool 😳), its called lucky sevens, hit it.
but cleo's story is a bit different w a different backstory (found dead alone mysteriously, gets their heart replaced) but they have a similar vibe :) aka badass people who can kick your ass and also probably commit copious amounts of arson and/or murder
another inspiration for this one was this bernadette banner video haha

hello!!!! I am so normal about the mechanisms (lying) but am not good at describing things so if you want, like, The Intro Post To The Mechs than @x-ca1iber has it and that’s much more fine tuned but I shall try my best! This may be… a bit of an infodump, and not very concise.
base content warnings for mechs, not this post but the mechs as a band and their stories: violence, so much violence, lots of death, war, general tragedy, British people (ew)
okay. So. The basics! The Mechanisms were a 9 person folk cabaret band who told stories in their albums and songs that were based on mythology and stories (more on that later)
Outside of these stories they played individual characters, a space, steampunk pirate crew of immortals roaming the universe aboard a sentient starship named the Aurora and finding tragedies to tell through their albums.
They're, as I mentioned, immortal, through a mechanism (not to be confused with The Mechanisms, the name of their crew lol. They weren’t very creative with that) A mechanism is a replacement for a part (or in some cases several parts) of one’s body made of metal and shit, that causes regeneration if you die. And this shit isn’t light, it is totally possible to regen from being, for instance… shoved into a sun for a century. so basically, crew of immortals making stories they witness into albums and playing the roles of people in those stories.
For a fan of tma, the most recognizable part of this is 4 people in the crew (though only 3 are major characters in tma) Jonny Sims, of course, plays Jon in tma and Jonny D’ville (he/him) in the mechanisms. (He is… perhaps not the most creative with naming his character) Jonny D’ville is the first mate (NOT captain. Though he would say he was) of the Aurora, and his mechanism is his heart. He was the first person in the crew, and the first to become immortal. He’s also the lead singer, and plays harmonica.
Frank Voss plays Basira in tma, and in the mechs plays Ashes O’Reilly (they/them) an arsonist crime boss, ship’s quartermaster, whose mechanism is their lungs!
Jessica Law plays Nikola Orsinov in tma, and in the mechs she plays The Toy Soldier (it/its) The Toy Soldier is… a bit of an outlier, in that it wasn’t ever mechanized, wasn’t ever “made” immortal. It is simply a sentient clockwork toy, with a voice box stolen from a human it had been in love with. (Somehow jess is typecast as an unsettling dollike entity twice in a thing created in part by Jonny sims) Its role in the crew is… really nobody knows. Occasionally it’s called mascot. It’s just kinda there and whenever it’s kicked out it finds its way back. It’s very charming, and simply happy to be involved!
last, and kinda least in the context of being a tma fan, is Tim Ledsam, who plays the exterminator Jordan Kennedy in tma and Gunpowder Tim, (he/him) master-at-arms, in the mechanisms. His mechanism is his eyes.
others, who I’m not going to go into detail about, are Nastya Rasputina (she/her) engineer, Ivy Alexandria (she/her, actor uses he/him) archivist, Drumbot Brian (he/him) pilot, Marius Von Raum (he/him, actor uses they/them) and Raphaella la cognizi (she/her)
two, the albums! This is gonna be pretty quick because it’s just an overview, but there are 4 main story albums that tell self contained stories, 2 that are a collection of songs that tell single stories, and 1 EP thing that tells its own little ballad. Then there’s a live recorded version of their final show ever, death to the mechanisms. They’re all very tragic, and *very* queer stories.
first, once upon a time (in space) a story based on fairy tales, tells the story of a war through the stars.
second, Ulysses dies at dawn, a film noir style telling of a dystopian world based on Greek myths.
third, high noon over Camelot, a cowboy western ballad about Arthurian legend on a space station.
fourth, the bifrost incident, a rock ballad about Norse myth, lovecraft eldritch horror, and one person being really fucking horny for a train (Dw about it)
the other albums are a mix of myth and story retellings (Frankenstein, the story of Prometheus, a rhythm based video game called crypt of the necrodancer) and character backstory songs for the Mechanisms.
random ass fun facts because I’m out of base info and I think the mechs is really funny for something supposed to be tragedy
-one of the crew, Nastya, is in a loving romantic and sexual relationship with the starship
-there are creatures called octokittens that are half octopus half kitten. I love them.
-Jonny is Texan. Yeah. (Well technically New Texan, because he was born on a planet called New Texas, but whatever)
-I’m not going into this because it’s more complex lore but the person who “created” most of the mechanisms was a vampire named Doctor Carmilla and was a (very disfunctuonal) mother figure to at least most of the crew. They kicked her out
-Doctor Baron Marius Von Raum, one of the other crewmates, is neither a doctor nor a baron. His real name is Byron. He psychoanalizes people for fun.
-they’re all horrible people, the Mechanisms. They kill and burn and destroy and manipulate unrepentantly and take pride in breaking every law they can find (though we have explicit canon confirmation that Jonny flat out refuses to commit any sexual crimes) It makes them fun, though
-there are *so* many photos of the bandmates in character and a good part of fandom activity is just passing around those photos within the fandom like they’re Pokémon cards
-last, and very much not least, it’s quite important to note that Jonny Sims didn’t “create” the mechanisms, not like he did tma. It’s a collaboration between a bunch of great storytellers and musicians that started out as a uni band

How many Hatchetfield and how many Mechanisms?
Also, what's been your favorite moment of looking at a submission and being like "that doesn't make sense...oh no wait that makes perfect sense"? Mine is realizing that seeing Mr. Eaten's description in the Desolation bracket and realizing it was waaaay more Desolation than Flesh.
To answer your last question first, I truly couldn't tell you. There's 2,420 unique pairs of Character X for Entity Y and they all tend to blur a little. That said, Heathcliff for Desolation was pretty solid.

Mechs-Nautica - The Mechanisms x Subnautica
Warnings: Canon-Typical behaviour for the Mechs, ocean depths, occasional gore
Summary:
“I want to collect some samples there!” Raphaella chirped as soon as she saw the ocean planet. “It’s going to be just a few! No long stops, don’t worry!”
They all agreed to do just that.
But instead, the Aurora picked up a garbled message. Something about quarantine, though they could not understand most of what was being said. The Aurora shook shortly after. Nastya began yelling, and every single alarm blared as the ship screamed in distress.
And then they crashed into the oceans below.

Hello we are doing a little Nightmare x The Mechanism au here some info about it of characters we have figured out.
Here some Tw:death, talks of violence, murder, talks of how people get murder, needles,unethical surgery,
Nastya- was the adopted daughter of The Lady, former known as Loreli and The Doctor of former known as Carmilla. She is 15 years old and is dating Aurora. Also, she has a sibling relationship with Jonny.
Jonny- He is also 15 years old, and his backstory is that he lived with a single dad and every fine, his dad slowly gets corrupted by the tower, and Jonny kills him and runs away from his house. He and Nastya have a sibling relationship. He is good friends with Aurora.
Aurora-She also 15, she meet Nastya before everything happens, they meet because of Nastya's mom restaurant where Aurora family met Nastya's family and they became friends and then lovers. They got separated, and then Jonny reunited them. Aurora escaped after nearly dying by the hands of her family.
The Lady- Formerly known as Loreli is the wife of Carmilla and mother of Nastya. She works at a restaurant that know kills people and uses kids to keep her young. She kills people by picking them up with her magic and sucks the soul out of them.
The librarian-Also, known as the Ivy. She is a librarian ,and if you dare go into her library, you will never leave. She kills by Slaming people into books or hitting you with her books.
The Doctor-Also known as Dr.Carmilla, she is the wife of Loreli and the mother of Nastya. She was an amazing doctor until corrupted by the tower. She does unethical surgery on people who want to help. When she catches you, she uses needles to make fall asleep, and she will later have surgery on you.

Nastya has done something to Jonny's harmonica.
Nastya asked Raphaella what it'd take to get Jonny to drink something dangerous.
The Toy Soldier made a blog.
Ivy Alexandria made a blog.
Jonny has been stealing Ivy's books.
Jonny is pining about "someone" again. He emphasizes again it is not Gunpowder Tim.
Jonny has discovered fanfiction, specifically the Jonny/Tim and character/reader tags.
Raphaella is told that there's fanfiction of Raph/Ivy.
Raphaella has rediscovered that she is gay. Jonny implies this person is an archivist and someone we're familiar with. Nastya wants me to go over this fact a few times.
Jonny has "feelings" about him x Tim fanfiction.
Brian made a blog.
Lyfrassir Edda, that inspector from those 60 years we spent in prison, made a blog.
Raphaella is having heart problems.
Nastya explains how everyone who is blogging isn't really doing so from a specific point in the "timeline."

so like the mechanisms are a band but they all have characters that they play and have lore and tell stories (theyre immortal space pirates who roam stars in the starship aurora having fun violence and more violence etc etc) GHSJHKFSH im not gonna ramble abt them anymore lol @lucky-sevens is a very good resource for all things mechs + check out lyric vids of their songs on here + their official site
SO BASICALLY, mumbo right? i know i said hed be nastya and he does share some stuff w her but then ppl reminded me of who would be aurora and what of nastyas backstory and i realized tango would be a better fit for those details of nastya so (ex princess tango + starship impulse !!! zed is the ships doctor btw n his mechanism is his brain) i decided to mix n match stuff from different characters n change whatevers, so now about mumbo:
his mechanism is his blood ! which is replaced with redstone :] this makes him radioactive, and also glow red. hes also like, a powered redstone circuit or w/e they are, and can power things by touching them/being near them even. i think redstone would be terrible for circulation but also that i think redstone itself would be pretty hot, being radioactive and all (especially powered redstone)
the coat + gloves etc are for hiding the glow (and also maybe some of the radiation??? i cant imagine that would be very good for normal people), and the scarf is for his head when he goes out n such
the mustache is fake. yeah. mumbo got meched young and did not get a mustache u_u
i think theyd have a backstory kinda like ashes, mumbo worked for the governemnt as a scientist/weapons expert but double crossed them for the rebellion or smth and got assassinated/sabotaged via lab safety violations
ok thats all i got for now abt mumbo
im kinda thinkin if ill keep the original number of 9 mechanisms or if ill add more hermits, i want other mcyts to be album characters and such, with one smp focused on one album maybe, but i dont know if i wanna add hermits as albums characs or as more mechs. maybe them as non-mechs immortals? like king cole or lyf or briar etc. thoughts on etho as carmilla tho?
btw i read everthin ppl say on my posts!!!!! i love all of ur hermitmechs ideas !!!!!!!! im grateful for each and everyone even the keysmashes u_u <3 all three characters in this au so far is now tagged under #hermitmechs!
