Hey there, just needed to say something quick. ALL of this misrepresentation about schizophrenia everywhere is ableism. People that say “schizophrenia is spiritual”, “schizophrenia is satanic”, “schizophrenia is demonic”, “schizophrenia means that you have demonic entities attached to you”, “schizophrenia means that you are in spiritual warfare with demons”, “schizophrenia just means that you are going through a spiritual awakening” is just so frustrating for people who ACTUALLY have this mental Illness or suffer from psychosis. It all comes from people who don’t even HAVE this illness or experience these things. It is dangerous to tell people who have or don’t have schizophrenia/ schizoaffective disorder, people who are on the schizo spectrum or people who experience psychosis that what they are experiencing is real and is caused from external forces or that they are just in a “spiritual awakening”. Stop spreading your misinformation on this mental illness and do some research, your ableism is showing. This goes to all of you new age spiritualists that say “people with schizophrenia just experience the world differently than us” No, we are suffering from psychosis/hallucinations or delusions. It is a mental illness, not what your idea of what schizophrenia may seem like to you. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, I’m not haunted or “woke” I’m mentally disabled, It is a mental illness PERIOD.

I'd love it if more people understood the difference between hallucinations and illusions. So let me try to explain with examples. [TW: examples of auditory hallucinations and illusions described as you experiencing them]
1. Imagine you are home alone with your windows closed and it's silent. And then you hear unfamiliar voices talking about you, it sounds like they are coming from another room. You go to check but no one is there. Your brain created entire voices of people out of thin air. This is a hallucination. There is nothing but your brain creates something.
2. Now imagine you are in the same scenario but your windows are open but the curtains are closed. You hear your neighbors having a conversation, and you hear it as them talking about what you are doing in that moment. They couldn't possibly see what you are doing, so realistically they can't be talking about you, but your brain makes you change the words and hear it that way. This is an illusion. There is something but your brain changes the real thing into something unreal.
It's not always easy to know the difference when you are experiencing it. But if you do know which one it is (nothing there and something unreal appears or something there changes to something unreal) then I think it can be really helpful to label the symptom accurately.
For me it was helpful to gage the effectiveness of my medication. I noticed that I have more illusions than hallucinations, and for me that was a sign of improvement. It can also go the other way, to see if your psychosis is getting more severe.

Hi I’m a little confused about something and was wondering if you might know the answer?
Do you know if all systems experience auditory hallucinations? I can hear my headmates in my head but I don’t hear them in a way that I would think I was hearing them outside the headspace.
I’m very curious. :)
no, not all systems experience auditory hallucinations. but an auditory hallucination can include things that sound like they're coming from inside your head, different to thoughts (but in what way they're different, we're not sure, as someone who doesn't experience hallucinations)

Found out I’ve been having auditory hallucinations and now whenever I hear something that definitely could not be there I wonder if it’s the regular sort of hearing stuff or it’s the hallucinations

"Doc! Doc, where are you, brother?" Ren called as he flew into the perimeter, book clutched tightly in his hand.
It was night, which Ren did not want either, because the moon was full and his brain was buzzing with the sound of lighting filling his ears. He flew around until he found Doc fiddling with some redstone. Ren didn't know which particular monstrosity of a machine it was, but he landed and ran over to him, thrusting the book at him.
"Doc, I-I found it, I found-"
"Hmm? What's this?" Doc flipped through it, sort of recognising some of Ren's scrambled writing, but to be honest, it was all a little difficult to decipher. "Are you okay? You don't look okay."
"Last season was meant to be a simulation, yeah? None of that was meant to be real?" Ren ventured, searching Doc's eyes as he gripped his arms.
"Uh, yeah, that's what I understand happened. Why? What's this book got to do with anything?" Doc said.
"That's the moon rock book," Ren said with absolute certainty. "You know, from when I went mad? I found it in a chest under the Crastle when I was cleaning up the last of the chests I'd left there. And it's not supposed to be real. And yet it's here. I know it's mine because it has my scent on it, and yours. It smells old enough. And that's my writing. I'm sure it's the real book, Doc."
"Oh. The- right before we- oh. Yeah. Okay," Doc said, handing him the book back.
Ren couldn't read his expression as he stashed the book away. "It's been a year, Doc. Like, I think yesterday was the day it all... I've been having nightmares all week. Hiding in holes in the ground if I'm out at night and no one's slept so I don't have to see the moon. I'm terrified of storms now, Doc, in a way I really wasn't before. I hear lightning all the time. I-I don't know if I'm just not coping or if my body somehow remembers but- I'm not okay, Doc. And finding that book has just shaken me. It can't have been real. It wasn't meant to be real, right?"
"No, it wasn't meant to be real," Doc said quietly. "I... I just thought the lightning in my head was normal. But you hear it too?"
Ren nodded. "It's like white noise, and then it cracks, and I see flashes behind my eyes when I'm sleeping. My nerves have been shot all season. Like I'm being electrocuted all the time. And I don't even have any mechanical bits anymore! That's also weird, you know?"
Doc brought him into a tight hug, and Ren held him back, whining softly, his body trembling as thunder rolled across the sky in the distance.
"It's been a year, huh? I'd almost forgotten," Doc said, rubbing Ren's back gently.
"It's been a year. Doc. What do I do if it's real? What does any of that mean if it's real?" Ren said.
"I dunno. But you can stay here with me as long as you need to. Maybe I don't want us too far apart either, you know?" Doc said.
"Yeah, we went through all that together. I'm not ready to-"
Ren paused, unsure of what words he even needed or was trying to find. He clung tighter to Doc, burying his face in his chest, seeking all the comfort he could find as the thunder rolled closer and the sky flashed behind them.

Auditory hallucinations whump? Thoughts? Examples?
any type of hallucinations in whump is perfect to me. visually hallucination? lovely. auditory hallucinations? nice. basically I’m a sucker for tropes where a character is a mess to the point they can’t trust themself, what they see or what they hear. they don’t know what is real and what isn’t. the sheer panic? the struggle? yeah I love that shit.
in regards to your ask about auditory whump a character (whumpee) suffering from, they can hear voices in their head telling them to do terrible things to themself and/or to other people, maybe to the people they love. the voices in their head can sound like someone they know, they can either sound like their enemy, their friend, or someone they’ve lost. maybe a dead lover where whumpee started hearing their voice when they’re mourning them.
the voices can say cruel things about whumpee themself, things that are whumpee’s worst fear or things that are whumpee’s dark secrets.
but the thing about auditory hallucinations is that it doesn’t always have to start with “unkind voices” in someone’s head. actually, in most cases, the voices someone in real life hears, if left untreated, can eventually lead to a full blown schizophrenia. it can start off as something kind and sweet, or something normal and random (like someone hearing voices telling them they should wear this shirt today), before things start getting worse; those nice and/or random voices can eventually tell someone to do something bad to themself and/or others.
and most people don’t go see a psychiatrist when it first starts off as something small / nice / random because they can just shrug it off as nothing. until the voices get to the point where they are aggressive and dangerous.
tropes regarding auditory hallucinations:
whumpee who’s mourning the death of their loved one starting hearing their loved one’s voices in their head, telling them they were the reason they died.
whumpee with self esteem issues hearing voices in their head telling them they’re not good enough.
villain whumpee who did bad things because the voices in their head made them.
whumpee who can’t tell if the voices they hear are real or if they’re hallucinating it. they’re struggling to distinguish what is real and what is in their head. in some situations, this can put them and the people around them in danger.
whumpee not being able to trust caretaker, because they don’t know if the voices really belong to caretaker or if it’s a part of their illness.
“listen to me. you have to listen to me.”
“stop it. stop! you’re not real.”
“yes, I am. I am real. and I need you to trust me.”
“the voices say the same time. how do I know you’re not one of them?”

Why do complete strangers feel the need to rationalize my delusions? It’s weird and personally very upsetting to be told something so counterproductive by someone who’s supposed to be rational.
I apologized to an older lady who caught me talking to myself and she asked me how long the angels have been speaking to me. I was caught off guard and stumbled out something about “just hearing voices” only to get reassured I wasn’t hearing anything other than messages from God.
I understand that certain people believe this stuff genuinely, but after she kept trying to convince me I wasn’t crazy, the voices took a turn towards the divine so to speak, and I’ve had to deal with my most pervasive symptoms taking on religious undertones.
I get people turn to religion, or the spiritual to deal with their schizophrenia sometimes, but it’s not anyone’s place to tell me what the hell I’m hearing, and I wish people would understand how dangerous it can be to validate the voices, or to even acknowledge them.
It always seems like the people who insist schizophrenia isn’t real, or who think that all schizophrenics are evil, dangerous people that try and convince me I’m not sick. Maybe it’s because I look put together?
I don’t know. I’m just sick of doing damage control because some stranger thought they know better than I do.

I just want to say I agree with your post / reply to "No! If you are hearing voices in your head, that's not fucking healthy." That kind of sentiment can be really harmful. You should seek help if you need it, but what if the voices only say good things to you? What reason then is there to get rid of them? Not everything out of the ordinary is bad, and that's something more people need to realize.
This!
I mean, this is why the Hearing Voice Network compared forcing people to get rid of their voices to conversion therapy.
If someone thinks that positive and supportive voices inherently are problematic and need treated, they're not pro-recovery. They're pro-conversion. They don't care about your personal health. They're only interested in making you "normal."
It's about making people who are different acceptable to and able to fit in with neurotypicals. Nothing more.

Hey there 😊 just wanted to say a thing quick.. 💖
If someone has schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder or on the schizo spectrum, please do not say that they are gifted, that they’re clairaudient, telepathic or anything of that sort. I know you’re just trying to make sense of it all but please 💖✨don’t✨💖
It feeds into their hallucinations/delusions that they are experiencing and that is DANGEROUS to someone who is hallucinating *them already thinking that the voices are REAL, that they actually can read minds or that they are thought broadcasting and everyone can read their minds all while actually believing it to be real* and can lead to them thinking they have a gift and can lead to them putting themselves in danger by thinking that what they are being told while hallucinating is REAL because they “have a gift” or are “gifted”. I’ve been told this before early on when I was first diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder about 5 years ago I had to find out on my own with my diagnosis that not knowing what’s real and what is real is just apart of having this mental illness. We are not being haunted by demons or ghost’s, it is a mental illness just like anxiety or depression, and unfortunately we suffer from hallucinations, catatonia, depression, and labile affect(Inappropriate involuntary laughing and crying) amongst a lot more symptom’s, just like you take meds for anxiety and depression we also have to take medications, it is a mental illness and should be treated as such, with knowledge and treatment can help someone get clarity about their recovery and can help reduce their symptoms. Thank you for reading 💖✨😊
