What is Humidity?

It's September 16th, 🇺🇳 International Ozone Preservation Day. On this day in 1987, the United Nations sponsored the 🇨🇦 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. This annual observance highlights the threats to our atmosphere's ozone layer, its relationship with climate change, and the steps we can all take to protect it from further damage.
In 1913, 🇫🇷 French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson discovered the ozone layer while measuring the Sun's radiation. Later research revealed that this fragile layer of ozone gas in our atmosphere protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays, thus helping to preserve life on our planet.
In the late 1970s, scientists realized that human activity was destroying the ozone layer. They discovered a hole that was caused by ozone-depleting gases often found in air conditioners and refrigerators. Evidence of this ozone depletion manifested itself in many ways, including destruction of plants and ecosystems and increased incidences of skin cancer.
The international community rose to the occasion. In 1985, the United Nations adopted a formal declaration, the 🇦🇹 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer, and then two years later put the Montreal Protocol into effect. Thanks to these successful efforts, the ozone layer is now healing. On September 16th, 2009, the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol became the first United Nations treaties in history to achieve universal ratification. Without oceans and the atmosphere, Earth’s temperatures would be like the moon’s, which drop by hundreds of degrees after sunset. Winds on Earth carry warm air towards the poles and cool air towards the equator. Ocean-top currents carry warm water towards the poles and underwater currents carry cool water towards the Equator.

Ontem, depois que tirei a foto das #palmeiras contra o #céularanja (que publiquei aqui, no IG), mostrei a imagem pra filhotinha, futura professora de #ciências . Ela já tinha visto a cor e feito breve comentário sobre o tom quando saí, nesse horário #laranja que tanta gente registrou. Depois de ter mostrado a foto do IG, que não tinha filtro aplicado, ela me disse. "Você sabe que essa cor laranja é por causa da poluição?" Não, não sabia. Depois pensei no novo filme do Blade Runner, no laranja de uma parte da história. Fiquei pasma. Esse tom, então... não é bom... Mas não foi apenas com o propósito de informar sobre isso que trago estas imagens, que foram tratadas no #lightroom, com exceção da última (essa foi obra do #Googlefotos - se quiserem comparar). Resolvi postar estas fotos hoje - com duas imagens das palmeiras já exibidas ontem - pq li uma matéria na Folha sobre o final do dia de ontem e como as redes sociais se encheram de posts cor de laranja. O texto focava na formação das #nuvens, que estão na primeira foto desta sequência. São chamadas #mammatus pq lembram pequenas mamas. Elas surgem acima de onde ficam as cumulus nimbus (nuvens de chuva pesada). Não são comuns, mas não são raras. Porém a matéria nada falou de poluição. Poderia ter explicado. Ou não? Será que o texto não quis acabar com os ohhs e ahhss da mídia social? Porque a especialista consultada aparece em outros textos falando da relação da cor com as partículas poluentes no ar. Talvez o jornalista tenha optado por ficar na bonita formação de nuvens. Certamente falar de poluição iria tirar o romantismo do fenômeno. Eu diria, no entanto, de forma arriscada, que citar a poluição não mataria a poesia vista ontem. Poesia, afinal, não é só sobre romance. Há poesias trágicas e tristes como enterros, ainda que belas. Quem diria, enfim... Ontem admirávamos partículas poluentes alaranjando o céu. Viver, como escreveu Guimarães Rosa, é muito perigoso. Exploratorium’s Wired Pier Website Challenges “Alternative Facts,” Encourages Local Environmental Awareness

The Exploratorium is launching its new Wired Pier Website this week! For the last three years, our team has been developing the site, aimed at providing public access to environmental information gathered by the network of sensors embedded across the museum’s location on San Francisco’s Embarcadero.

The website provides easy to use, online tools meant to inspire educators, tinkerers, and citizen-scientists to explore and interact with environmental data collected on site.

When Exploratorium moved four years ago to its new waterfront home in 2013, the museum was designed to double as an environmental field station. The building was fitted with an array of sensors that measure patterns in San Francisco Bay’s water, weather, and atmospheric conditions.

The Wired Pier website makes the information collected accessible and understandable to the public, building on the Exploratorium’s vision of a world where people think for themselves and can confidently ask questions, question answers, and understand the world around them.

The Wired Pier was inspired in part by the science movement interested in democratizing data and making it available to all. Projects like Wired Pier encourage science literacy and counter “alternative facts” by giving people direct access to their sources. We are so excited to get people engaged and curious about the environment of the bay!

For use on mobile, the Wired Pier app uses familiar smartphone and tablet features, such as click, drag, pinch and zoom. It also allows users to easily wrangle large amounts of complicated data in a way that is useful and accessible both to young learners and seasoned scientists alike.

The Wired Pier launch is just the beginning. As user engagement increases and data grows on the site, our community of tinkerers, thinkers, and explorers across the globe will come up with new ways to use the information to provide better answers to the questions we face today.
