Katara has always been my favourite character and she doesnt deserve the hate just for mourning her mother.

A friend of mine had a thought:
Y‘all know how in the episode The Puppetmaster, Katara tells the story of little Nini and how she disappears and is a ghost trying to get warm. She also says that sometimes you can see the smoke coming from her house. Katara also swears that it was a real story which happened to her mom. Anyways looking at it from a perspective of mythology, couldn’t those sorts of ghost stories be the explanation that Kanna‘s generation told Kya and Hakoda‘s, to explain why so many of their people went missing during the raids, going down to the detail of fearing smoke. Furthermore right after the story, Hama appears, Hama is one of the „missing ghosts“ who is now making others disappear.

@zutaraweek day 4: meeting
this one got slightly out of hand but i think i stopped it from getting entirely out of hand. but here’s a little comic about a subtle little au i’ve been drawing for a few zutara weeks now where the war ended early and kya lives (also is chief).
being a comic and having a short deadline (and also adding a page after I thought I was done), I may have taken a few short cuts and it could have been a little less messy structure wise but it’s fine
transcript, and brief image descriptions, under the cut incase it’s hard to read!
Page 1: Kya and Katara arrive to the Fire Nation, the four panel’s on this page show establishing shots of the Fire Nation. Kya: Oh it’s so nice to be be able to really stretch your legs, don’t you think? Katara: Maybe. Kya: Come on now, this is exciting! You’ve never been to the Fire Nation before! Katara: Am I even going to know anyone at the accords? Kya: Yue might be coming this year. And Fire Lord Iroh has a nephew and niece about your age. Maybe you can be friends. Kya: You’ll love the garden’s, I promise.
Page 2: Kya and Katara talk as they walk Katara: I don’t see why we had to come. The other nations rarely come to us. And the foods probably bad. Kya: The peace accords cycle through every nation every year, Katara. It’s how it’s always been done. Katara: You could have brought Sokka. Kya: My darling, you begged to come. And he wasn’t sure how he felt about raw Fire Nation sea slug tentacles. Katara: Do I have to eat that?
Page 3: We switch to Zuko and Ozai talking, presumably waiting to meet Kya and Katara at the gardens. Text at the top of the page reads ‘meawhile in the Royal Gardens’ Zuko: I don’t see why we had to come. This is supposed to be Uncles job, couldn’t he have sent Lu Ten- Ozai: Your uncle and your cousin are preoccupied doing something with the Earth Kingdom delegates this morning. This is an opportunity to do something above your status, be grateful I chose you.
Page 4: Kya and Katara continue talking Katara: It’s just that these talks always feel pointless. Everything’s still tense. And it’s warmer then you’d said it’d be and I…I already miss home. Kya: It’s natural to be homesick, we’re far from home. But the peace accords between nations are important if we intend to have lasting peace. We need to have a presence each year or else the Fire Nation will forget what stopped the last war. It’s important. Kya: And it’s late fall. The summers are much worse. Katara: There’s worse??
Page 5: Ozai continues to berate Zuko, who is uncomfortable about this. But they get interrupted as Kya and Katara arrive, and we get a shot of the turtle duck pond Ozai: Rarely do we get the opportunity to step from your uncles shadow. Especially you. You forget too easily because your uncle is kind. But not all of us are satisfied being third in line for the throne- Kya, interrupting: Prince Ozai. I wasn’t expecting you.
Page 6: Kya is less then impressed with Ozai but their conversation get’s tuned out by both teens as Katara waves at Zuko and goes to give him a Southern Water Tribe forearm shake as a greeting. Kya: I was told we would be meeting your brother, the Fire Lord, this morning. Ozai: Chief Kya! Iroh had unexpected business. How was your voya-

can I have more avatar ursa au?
Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].
1. There wasn't a day that went by that Ursa didn't miss her children, that she didn't long to have them with her, that she didn't feel their absense, and Ozai's control over them like a knife blow. So why is it so hard to have them with her? If she thought the time on the water, as she sailed back to the North Pole, would be a time of healing and reconnecting, both her children soon disabuse her of this notion. At first it's just Azula, full of fury and fear, and full of accusations that her mother stole her away from the only parent who really loved her (and doesn't that make Ursa, who loves her daughter so much, want to scream) and in doing so, stole the throne away from her. But now it's Zuko too, pushing and pushing, and pushing, like he's trying to get her to snap.
2. Of course that's exactly what Zuko is doing, and if Ursa had any space to breathe and think, she would figure it out pretry quick. He's spent so long dancing to his father's tune, trying sho hard to be his father's perfect son, so that he doesn't disappoint him, like he always, always does, that all he can think to do is try to push his mother until ahe pushes back, just so she will punish him, and he will get it out of the way and know what the worst is. and the more he pushes and she doesn't punish, the more anxious he gets, until he's wound so tight the thinks he will be the one to snap.
3. And this is how they sail into the harbor at the North Pole, Ursa and her children, and all of the anger, fear, and resentment traveling with them. Kanna, Kya, and Kya's children aren't waiting for them. How could they? They had no way of knowing when she would be back. But a messanger sends for them as soon as Ursa steps off the boat, each of her children's hands clasped in her own. Zuko spends the entire journey to the palace and the suite of guest rooms Ursa has called her own (and Kya's, and Kanna's, and Sokka and Katara's) practically babbling with nerves. Is she really the Avatar? Has she really been learning to waterbend? But Father will want her dead, he will have her killed, he will want to know why Zuko didn't try to kill her, he will... But Azula is silent the whole way. She doesn't even snap back at ther brother or tell him to shut up. And Ursa knows her daughter well enough to know that's not good, to know she's planning something.
4. But none of them ever get to know what Azula is planning, because when Kya sees Ursa, she runs up to her, throws her arms around her, and kisses her, with joy, relief, and love. And Azula explodes. How dare they? They are disgusting, unnatural, this is because her mother is the Avatar and a demon in human form, and this is why she could never love their father, and he was right all along, she is sick, and evil, and... And this is how Kya, and Kanna, and Sokka and Katara all meet Ursa's children.
5. And Ursa needs to tell her it's not true, and she doesn't get to speak to people that way, And somehow she needs to make her understand that no, the reason she couldn't ever love Ozai was because he was the one who was evil. It was because of the way he treated her, right from the start, and worse, the way he treated Zuko and Azula. And she knows, she has to believe, that someday Ozai's words will dry up, that Azula will run out of them and have to start using her own. But right now, she is so, so tired.

I ask because I genuinely don't know which is canon. I’ve seen it both ways.
Katara’s necklace comes originally from Gran Gran and then was passed down to Kya, Katara’s mother. However this would work whether Gran Gran was Hakoda or Kya’s mother, because the necklace is a symbol of marriage similar to the western equivalent of wearing a ring once you’re married. So Gran Gran could have passed it to Hakoda, who used it to propose to Kya. However it’s possible this is a Northern Water Tribe tradition only, and Kya received the necklace from her grandmother and wore it as a family heirloom. What do you guys think?

Fiona Pitch, from The Simon Snow Series: she’s a criminal. She’s a vampire hunter who dates vampires. She’s a mediocre aunt but she is doing her best. I love her your honor.
Kya, Katara’s Mom, from Avatar: the Last Airbender: she’s pretty. That’s it. Do I need to explain.

i don't kno how it's possible for sokka, the older sibling by 2 years, doesn't remember his mom much
but katara, the younger sibling by 2 years, remembers her mom quite well
I think it's super icky and messed up that the older brother views his younger sister as a quasi mother
and it's even more icky and messed up that the writers thought that was okay

I’m always on here trying to find a show/movie/fanfic or whatever I’m hooked on lately. That being fanfic of zutara. But if it be a WIP or Completed I don’t mind. (Maybe a little bit if it’s a WIP)
Anyway I’m looking for a Zutara fic where Azula has a redemption arc but it could be a slow burn or one of the kids basically gives her love to bring her back. Maybe it’s out there in some way or maybe this is a chance to stick my toe in the Zutara fanfic realm. *me blatantly ignoring all my own WIP stories*

Is there an AU for Avatar Ursa?
I am appalled I tell you, appalled, that you would so doubt me. Of course I have an Avatar Ursa AU. And just for that, I say those Ursa left behind in the Northern Water Tribe deserve some attention. Continued from: [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], [Link], and [Link].
1. Kya wakes to cold blankets beside her. She thinks, she assumes, that Ursa just got up earlier. Ursa has always been an early riser. She once told her that firebenders rise with the sun. But Ursa is nowhere to be found. She doesn't come to take Katara to waterbending lessons, she doesn't come for lunch, and Kya frets. When she isn't back for dinner, Kanna nods at her empty place at the table, and says, "Ah, so Ursa has left at last." Kya's head whips around. What does Kanna mean by that? Only that Ursa has clearly been planning a journey by boat, for which she needs children's clothing, for several months. Oh dear, Kya hadn't noticed? Well maybe Kanna just knew what to look for, having once made a similar journey herself.
2. They put the children to bed. They're full of questions and don't want to go to sleep, and are too old to be sent to bed and tucked in anyway, but Kya and Kanna just shush them as best they can and climb up to the roof of the guest house they have been given. As soon as they are settled, Kya hisses that Kanna might have said something, and Kanna says no, that would have just given Kya time to try to talk Ursa out of going, and Ursa was never going to listen. They didn't need to fight about this. She shouldn't have gone, Kya insists. It's too dangerous. and Kanna shakes her head and asks if Kya wouldn't have done the same for her children. And Kya would. Of course she would, but she just lost her husband, and she loves Ursa so much, and she's so afraid, and can't Kanna understand that? (And didn't Hakoda die protecting their children?)
3. And Kanna does. Kanna is a widow who lost her only child. She understands all right. But Kya, even after Ursa get's back, she's still the Avatar. She has a duty to the world, and she's going to fight a war. Kya is going to have to get used to Ursa leaving to do very dangerous things. She can't stop her, and she shouldn't try. It will only bring them both pain. She can't hold everybody she cares about tight to her chest and keep them safe so that she won't be hurt again. And Kya does know that. She does. It's just...
4. The next morning, before Katara goes to waterbending lessons, Kya and Kanna sit her and her brother down and tell them where Ursa went, and how in just a little while, she will be back with her children, and Katara and Sokka need to be ready.
5. After a few months of hide and seek with his brother's forces, Iroh goes to ground. He's done what he needs to, and Ozai will be looking for him, not Ursa. He picks a nice little town in the southern Earth Kingdom, not far from Omashu. It's a pleasant, sleepy place, where the wealthier citizens try to mimic the high culture of Ba Sing Se, and he sets up a tea shop that becomes profitable in almost no time. The problem is, now that he isn't running anymore, now that he isn't tweeking his brother's nose, and with only the teashop to occupy his time, the depresssion and loss that almost swallowed him whole back in the Fire Nation returns full force. His son is dead, and his quiet retirement in Gaoling will always taste just a little like dust and ashes.
