A/N: This is my first (ever!) Ikemen fic and it's for the 2022 Spring Bouquet Content Creation Challenge, organized by the lovely and talented @atelier-maroron
Pairing: Comte de St. Germain x Reader. (This is told from Comte's POV so "you" is the reader but from his perspective)
Prompt: Searching for a four-leaf clover
Tumblr media
“Come on, Comte!”, you say as you run ahead, glancing back at me over your shoulder, impatience and excitement running through you like electric current, lighting you up from within.
I see your light and I follow it, unable to suppress a short laugh at your enthusiasm. This park is nothing new. We have been here many times before, taken many a turn around the cobalt blue pond, watched as it slowly frosted over to an arctic blue and then with the warming weather, cracked again, revealing the waters underneath. The pond is now hugged by lush green grass, inhabited by tiny yellow ducklings churning the water with their short, restless legs. I have experienced spring countless times….
And yet, with you, pausing in your mission, reaching back to take my hand, pulling me into your orbit so I have no choice but to follow, everything is new.
“It’s just up this hill!”
Your hand in mine, fingers curled around me, will never be anything less than extraordinary. Your touch, no matter whether deliberate or absent minded, unfailingly sends sparks through my veins.
I laugh out loud, feeling the warm spring sunlight on my face as we ascend, hands clasped. A warmth that holds the promise of summer. A touch that holds the promise of more.
You stop, cheeks pink with exertion and drop my hand to gesture at the ground, immensely proud.
“I told you!”
Across the top of the hill and sloping down the other side of it are bright patches of emerald green clover, the harbingers of spring, out in full force.
You kneel down, fingers gently running over the small, delicate leaves, expression concentrated. I love that look on your face.
“What are you doing?” I fold my arms, lips curved upward in amusement.
You shake your head, as if not believing I could ask such a silly question.
“Looking for luck.” You don’t even glance over your shoulder at me. You’re so intent on your search, so focused.
I watch you and can’t help the memories that begin to flash through my mind, like a zoetrope spinning faster and faster, pictures accelerating into motion. In my long lifetime, how many times have I seen children bending over clover, searching with excitement for the elusive four-leaved gem hidden among the rabble. How many couples have stopped on a spring day like today for a chance at luck. How many grandparents have watched their grandchildren, reliving their very same experience.
I see them all, over the centuries. Some triumphant in their hunt, their tiny green prize clutched in their hands. Some defeated and disheartened when it eluded them.
There will always be spring. There will always be patches of clover. And there will always be someone who stops, heart full of hope, to look for one with four leaves.
“There!”
You jump up, turning excitedly to me, hands carefully cupping your treasure. I reach down, cradling your hands in mine, see the perfect clover with its four heart-shaped leaves.
You lift your gaze to me, eyes alight, smile bright, more beautiful than any spring bloom.
“Now we’re going to be very lucky,” you proclaim happily.
I feel myself returning your smile, feel the way it pulls me away from thoughts of the past, towards the here and now and you.
Bending down, I kiss you, under the blue spring sky, on the blanket of green grass, in the light of the pale yellow sun. My hand comes up to cup your cheek, thumb running over the familiar, beloved line of your cheekbone, over the curve of your jaw, my fingers coming down to curl gently around your neck.
“Ma Chérie,” I say quietly, softly. “I already am. I have you.”

Outfit Details of the Bride and Bridal Party
The Wedding Dress: Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy
Ms. Meghan Markle’s wedding dress has been designed by the acclaimed British designer, Clare Waight Keller. Ms. Waight Keller last year became the first female Artistic Director at the historic French fashion house Givenchy.
After meeting Ms. Waight Keller in early 2018, Ms. Markle chose to work with her for her timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanour. Ms. Markle also wanted to highlight the success of a leading British talent who has now served as the creative head of three globally influential fashion houses – Pringle of Scotland, Chloé, and now Givenchy.
Ms. Markle and Ms. Waight Keller worked closely together on the design. The dress epitomises a timeless minimal elegance referencing the codes of the iconic House of Givenchy and showcasing the expert craftsmanship of its world-renowned Parisian couture atelier founded in 1952.
The Design
True to the heritage of the house, the pure lines of the dress are achieved using six meticulously placed seams. The focus of the dress is the graphic open bateau neckline that gracefully frames the shoulders and emphasises the slender sculpted waist. The lines of the dress extend towards the back where the train flows in soft round folds cushioned by an underskirt in triple silk organza. The slim three-quarter sleeves add a note of refined modernity.
The Fabric
Following extensive research by Ms. Waight Keller in fabric mills throughout Europe, an exclusive double bonded silk cady was developed. Perfect for the round sculptural look required, the silk cady has a soft matt lustre whilst the bonding process and pure white colour chosen by Ms. Markle and Ms. Waight Keller bring a fresh modernity to the dress.
The Veil
Ms. Markle expressed the wish of having all 53 countries of the Commonwealth with her on her journey through the ceremony. Ms. Waight Keller designed a veil representing the distinctive flora of each Commonwealth country united in one spectacular floral composition.
The Commonwealth family of nations – of which Her Majesty The Queen is Head –will be a central part of Prince Harry’s and Ms. Markle’s official work following   His Royal Highness’s appointment as Commonwealth Youth Ambassador. Ms. Markle wanted to express her gratitude for the opportunity to support the work of the Commonwealth by incorporating references to its members into the design of her wedding dress.
Significant time was spent researching the flora of each Commonwealth country and much care was taken by Ms. Waight Keller to ensure that every flower is unique.
The veil is five meters long and made from silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered flowers in silk threads and organza.
Each flower was worked flat, in three dimensions to create a unique and delicate design. The workers spent hundreds of hours meticulously sewing and washing their hands every thirty minutes to keep the tulle and threads pristine.
In addition to the flora of the Commonwealth, Ms. Markle also selected two personal favourites:
Wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox), which grows in the grounds of Kensington Palace in front of Nottingham Cottage, and the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) the State flower from Ms. Markle’s place of birth, California.
Symmetrically placed at the very front of the veil, crops of wheat are delicately embroidered and blend into the flora, to symbolise love and charity.
A selection of flora distinctive from every member state of the Commonwealth is listed below:

Jewellery
The veil is held in place by Queen Mary's diamond bandeau tiara, lent to Ms. Markle by The Queen. The diamond bandeau is English and was made in 1932, with the centre brooch dating from 1893.
The bandeau, which is made of diamonds and platinum, is formed as a flexible band of eleven sections, pierced with interlaced ovals and pavé set with large and small brilliant diamonds.  The centre is set with a detachable brooch of ten brilliant diamonds.
The diamond bandeau was made for Queen Mary and specifically designed to accommodate the centre brooch. This brooch was given as a present to the then Princess Mary in 1893 by the County of Lincoln on her marriage to Prince George, Duke of York.  The bandeau and the brooch were bequeathed by Queen Mary to The Queen in 1953.
The Bride is wearing earrings and bracelet made by Cartier.
Wedding Shoes
The wedding shoes are based on a Givenchy refined pointed couture design made of a silk duchess satin.
The Bride’s Bouquet
Prince Harry handpicked several flowers yesterday from their private garden at Kensington Palace to add to the bespoke bridal bouquet designed by florist Philippa Craddock.
The spring blooms include Forget-Me-Nots which were Diana, Princess of Wales’ favourite flower. The couple specifically chose them to be included in Ms. Markle’s bouquet to honour the memory of the late Princess on this special day.
The Bride's bouquet is a petite design, pulled together in a gentle, ethereal, relaxed style with delicate blooms also including scented sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine and astrantia, and sprigs of myrtle, all bound with a naturally dyed, raw silk ribbon.
The myrtle sprigs are from stems planted at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, by Queen Victoria in 1845, and from a plant grown from the myrtle used in The Queen’s wedding bouquet of 1947.
The tradition of carrying myrtle begun after Queen Victoria was given a nosegay containing myrtle by Prince Albert’s grandmother during a visit to Gotha in Germany.  In the same year, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Osborne House as a family retreat, and a sprig from the posy was planted against the terrace walls, where it continues to thrive today.
The myrtle was first carried by Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Princess Victoria, when she married in 1858.
Bridal Hair and Make-Up
Ms. Markle's hair was styled by Serge Normant, with make-up by long-time friend and make-up artist Daniel Martin.
Bridesmaids’ Dresses
Clare Waight Keller designed the six young Bridesmaids’ dresses in the Givenchy Haute Couture Atelier in Paris.
The dresses were designed to have the same timeless purity as Ms. Markle's dress.
Each dress is sculpted in Ivory silk Radzimir, and is high-waisted with short puff sleeves and hand finished with a double silk ribbon detail tied at the back in a bow. The Bridesmaids’ dresses include pockets and pleated skirts to create a relaxed and luxurious silhouette.
The Bridesmaids are wearing white leather Aquazurra shoes; each pair is monogrammed with the Bridesmaids initials, and the wedding date. The shoes are a gift from Ms. Markle to the young ladies as a keepsake of the special day.
Bridesmaids’ Flowers
The bridesmaids each have flower crowns selected by Prince Harry and Ms. Markle, which have been designed by florist Philippa Craddock.
The Bridesmaids' flowers replicate the flowers used in the bridal bouquet.
Page Boys' Uniforms
The four Pages are wearing a miniature version of the Blues and Royals frockcoat. The uniform draws its insignia from the Blues and Royals, which is an old Regiment of The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Both are also wearing Blues and Royals frockcoats for the Wedding Day.
The frockcoats are made from blue doeskin, single-breasted in style with a stand-up collar and completed with figured braiding of Regimental pattern. The figured braiding has been scaled down for the Pages, as otherwise it would have gone above their shoulders.
As a special memento, each Page has their initials embroidered in gold on their shoulder straps. The Pages are not wearing hats or white waist belts for practical reasons.
Their leg garments are made from blue/black wool barathea with three-quarter scarlet stripes fastened with a leather strap.
The uniforms were cut and made by the tailors Dege & Skinner in Savile Row.
Mother of the Bride's Dress
Ms. Ragland wears a custom dress and day coat designed by creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim.
Ms. Ragland's shoes are designed by Edgardo Osorio of Aquazurra, and her custom hat was designed exclusively for her by British milliner Stephen Jones, O.B.E., whom Ms. Markle has worked closely with since moving to the UK.
Stephen Jones was also commissioned by Ms. Markle to create custom hats for several of her closest friends.

Sharpay Collins grew up surrounded by fashion because her mother owns one of the most revered fashion houses in San Myshuno, The Collins Palace. While her mother was the visionary of the atelier, her dad ran the business as the CEO. Being tycoons of their own professions, Sharpay’s parents’ influence reached around the globe, dressing important symbols, icons and celebrities at their time. The Collins Palace put their name and brand on a pedestal, establishing their own archetype in the fashion industry. At an early age, Sharpay became
At an early age, Sharpay had amassed more clothes than her entire elementary batch could have had. Together with her twin brother Sam, they were respected elites in the St. La Salle’s Academy in Glimmerbrook, one of the most popular and expensive schools known SimWorld -wide.
The Palace of Collins demanded the spotlight it deserved from the rest of the industry and it did not only bathed Lucy underneath, but her children as well. She made sure that the lens glared for her children and not for the scandal she and her husband had had. The infidelity from both sides may have sparked so many rumors that fractured The Collins Palace but the foundations the fashion house has set for the fashion industry were stronger than any allegations. Eventually, Ryder and Lucy separated as a married couple, leaving the fashion house and the children as the strings that still attached them to each other. And as strings as they were, the blinding lights drowned that those thin fibers leaving the silhouette of perfect people. Sharpay was still the pretty little lady to the eyes of everyone than a child of a broken marriage.
Sharpay’s trajectory as a pretty little lady soared high from elementary, to high school. She was always revered by everyone including her teachers as an impeccable child of poise, glamour and fashion. She always looked good and presented herself well with the natural charm and charisma she got from her father. Girls idolized and worshipped her, while boys crushed on her. While she got overwhelming social admiration, Sharpay stood on her own two feet and carried on being a symbol of being a woman. Growing up to her teens, Sharpay further unfolded into a blooming blonde teen who wore pink all the time with the sultriness of a beauty queen. She was popular. She was outstanding. She was perfect.
Sharpay had so many men who wanted woo her into being their girlfriend. Several college students preyed on her as a high schooler and some of the athletes in the school varsity also had their eyes on her. None of them really came close to having a single date with her. That was because Sharpay had her eyes for a boy named Hans. While he was always being paired with her in most school events, Hans was a higher person who looked down to people outside his social circle. He was arrogant and assertive, highlighting is bad boy attitude no one dared to touch. Sharpay didn’t want to struck him out and kept quiet about her secret feelings for him. Despite being on the same privileged plane with him, they were two elements that were not meant to bond.
Sharpay had little to no worries in life than to look good and present her mother’s fashion house. It was as if she could do no wrong. Her mother put her on a pedestal for everyone to see and admire. Her brother was no less than fully supportive of her being an icon as their mom set her up to be. However, Sharpay had no interest in replacing her mom as the creative mind of The Collins Palace. She was the face, and the face was all she wanted. Studied Fine Arts in Britechester, opening to her parents about her aspiration to be a supermodel of her own right and not just the life of The Collins Palace. Being the visionary was Sam’s work, and all Sharpay had to do was live that vision her mother and brother had. Not long after she and Sam finished college, Lucy died from a freak accident due to reckless driving. The pressure of carrying on her job at The Collins Palace befell on the twins.
Sam took over the position and Sharpay supported his endeavors by working alongside him. Their tandem was dynamic. The business did not fall from the spotlight and their brand remained an icon for most of the industry. Her brother Sam’s creativity saved The Collins Palace as her social relations and charisma still anchored them to the industry. The two of them got their footing in the business so their father had offered to pass down his position to Sharpay as the new CEO. Since it was a big obligation and responsibility, Sharpay refused to take up his father’s offer. She figured it would take up majority of her time which would leave her little to pursue modelling. She emphasized her role to the brand; to be its face and its face alone.
Years passed and Sharpay had reached which was seemingly the prime of her life. She went to model for their brand and so many more fashion designers across the globe. She was one of the most sought after models who could save a brand or who could elevate the status of a fashion line. She had eyes all on her more than she ever had in her life. Men watched her and women worshipped her as perfection. Sharpay could have any social demand she could ask for. Men offered so much for her hand but none could appeal to her romantic feelings. Dates were everywhere. Hookups happened here and there. Sharpay explored more of herself as she walked down the plane of privilege where everyone and everything was hand reached but the love she had always asked for.
Some time in a quiet June morning, Sharpay came across a familiar face she always adored. Hans Sturman was shopping in a mall she was in. Hans may not have noticed her, but seeing him again after several years stirred something within her again. Sharpay felt giddy and debated over the dilemma of approaching him or connecting with him in any fashion. As she had been detached with many of her friends back in the day, she felt guilty of reaching out to them for no reason at all. But Hans was rather different. They weren’t friends and Sharpay knew she had nothing to lose. At the top of her career, respected worldwide and nothing could ever change the volume of men who’d still want her so in account of all these, Sharpay mustered all the confidence to talk to Hans for the very first time since high school. As they both did not have profound interaction even then, Sharpay trembled as if it was their first time to talk. With no more than a day, Hans replied to her and agreed to visit her by her villa in Windenburg. It felt like the first date she ever went to and it scared Sharpay to the bone. For someone who never had to worry about her looks, Sharpay stressed over how to present herself to the man she ever had eyes for.
Their date came and Sharpay had a good close look to Hans. He was as handsome as he was before with his baby blue eyes and tanned skin. Hans was a man who leaped out from the pages of a romance novel set in the tropics. Sharpay couldn’t hold herself still and so things happened that night between the two of them. Confessions were made. She professed how she felt for him back in the days, and how she never felt that way to anyone but him. Hans bathed himself in the revelation; one of the most beautiful women alive, Sharpay Collins, kept herself man-less for a high school heart throb like him. He loved the attention. He loved the power he had over her. Sharpay did not take offense to this, rather, it tickled her fancy knowing that a guy does not cower or bend to his knees just to please her. It was that dynamic that reeled her further in.
That night, things unfolded for the both of them. Sharpay shared her bed with him for the first time and it felt like a high school first sex. The next morning was no different. She woke up to a handsome man who knew his stature and value. That validated her feelings from the day before; that the giddiness did not just stop at first meeting. That was a rare occasion in the one night stands she had in the past. They shared several more dates through the month after their first one. Sharpay felt the attraction dragging her deeper to her feelings, despite Hans’ mysterious and secretive demeanor. Sharpay may have questioned how she felt once or twice during their dates, but nothing could ever overwrite the fact that she was dating her high school crush. Moreover, her dates and sex with Hans felt adventurous and daring, as if she was playing with things she didn’t fully understand. Sharpay enjoyed this characteristic of her dating life as if she was trudging an unknown path deprived of privilege or the upper hand. She thought wherever her relationship could bring her but their actions gave no indication where it was headed. She figured that maybe it was what that kept her chained to him for quite some time already and she didn’t want to jeopardize that by trying to decipher their dynamics as a couple.
Sharpay had a newfound hobby and interest that spiced up her life. Her first confirmed relationship was with Hans Sturman and the world knew about it in such short time. Their pairing was highlighted as a match designed by an artist. Photoshoots were booked for the both of them which painted them as epitomes of being a man and being a woman. They became a standard for couples and for people to follow and admire. Despite the regard that the world gave the both of them, the uncertainty that connects her to Hans was seemingly what construed their chemistry as a couple. She thrived in submission, bending over and exposing herself to someone she barely understood. It came to be then, that the pink pretty little girl wasn’t as nice and poised as people painted her to be.

Öznur Pınar ÇER and Danilo PETTA, the founders of Mask Architects designed the Villa G01 “Rock and Cave” special, unique luxury villa with panoramic sea view, located in one of the most exclusive areas of Northern Sardinia. The “Villa G01” villa was designed to ensure the sustainability of the local architectural and material texture of Sardinia, using today’s technology with robotic construction technique.
Öznur and Danilo have aimed to ensure the sustainability of the existing texture by combining the inspiration they draw from the architectural texture of Sardinian works of Jacques Cuelle with their own architectural style and the birth of this old-new combination with today’s technology. Their aim is to realise a design using a local architectural style which is organic, having natural textures, using local materials but not the same used before. The villa designed by them is re-characterised harmoniously with the existing local architecture style using environmental opportunities. The villa is not only carrying your daily routine lifestyle but also “Villa G01” for them should give you inspiration and remind you of your memories about the experiences. It generates an atmosphere of slow, laid-back summer living, encouraging mindful connection with family, friends and the freedom to exist peacefully in nature.
The villa concept is distinctively named “Villa G01” in accordance to its inspiration and overall appearance. Fully respecting Sardinia’s architectural style, this property is surrounded by a large garden measuring 4,000 m2, internal surface area 592,00 m2 and is perfectly integrated into its natural environment, nestled between rocks and vegetation, as well as bordering the beach and its crystal-blue sea. The living area consists of a large living room which is connected to the pool and landscape by foldable windows, which creates a very bright entrance of light thanks to the large windows open onto the verandas, dining area and lounge. The main villa design is centred around the wall which is located In the main living room are the main body structure and organic finished stair for the cave on the first floor, is clearly a private empty space that suggests silence and meditation or to passing religious moments, it is an architectural citation of typical Pre-Nuragic Sardinian cult spaces carved on the rocks, the domus de janas ( ‘’fairy houses’’).
The Villa is characterized by elegant textures, refined interior décor and prime traditional finishing. This design curve centre is to start to disrupt from the main living room at the wall. The design philosophy we use as the “main magnetic curve” is shaped around this wall which has included in it the main structure and accessibility for the cave terrace to give the main design direction to create indoor and outdoor space distribution and division perfectly with the landscape.
Exterior Shell which materialized traditional finishing reminds you such as “rock house”. The cave at the roof is inspired from local Sardinia´s rocks which have a void such as by natural occurring. Through a void, users are able to access the terrace floor for sunbathing or lounges sitting areas. Thanks to its feature of being a roof which has pieces that are able to go down that enables you to walk on it. Users can enjoy the panoramic view day and night. The view of the surrounding can be seen from the roof terrace.
The villa is nestled in a large and well-kept blooming garden, intelligently designed and conceived, and bordering the amazing seashore. The forest atmosphere gently embraces the house guaranteeing an innate sense of tranquillity, vivid colours and inebriating aromas. The outdoor garden is designed such as a natural forest with natural stones and local plants. With panoramic views, you can expect to view beautiful sunrises and sunsets all around. Relaxing generous outdoor spaces are ideal for alfresco entertaining and for admiring the crystal water and the gleaming yachts from the cage terraces, lounges sitting areas or from the panoramic equipped roof surface.
A five-bedroom and daily living areas re-generated exclusive sea-front villa built for the client to enjoy with their family and friends, the breezy dwelling celebrates its spectacular view from a grounded viewpoint blended into a sensitively landscaped, un-interrupted design garden that screens with a private dock and direct access to a white beach. One of the bedrooms is actually a spa, an ideal place for those who love to relax, as it features a cosy sauna and a massage area. Moreover, the bedrooms’ windows offer lovely views and unforgettable horizons. All the bedrooms enjoy great brightness thanks to the large windows open directly onto graceful outdoor lounge areas that enhance the sense of continuity between the interiors and the outside.
The entrance of the services people and all accessories function is positioned on the left side at -1 floor accessible directly by car, is also 30mq storage, rooms of services persons is located in this area on the opposite part of the main entrance.
Through the featured pool provides continuity and transition between the interiors and exterior with foldable curtain walls, that the user can open to give a sense of maximum openness in the living room. The swimming pool will act like an infinity pool in which at numerous angles the swimming pool lines up with the sea and seems as the pool drifts off into the sea. A seemingless transition between home and into the sea. The organically shaped stunning swimming pool is surrounded by outdoor activities such as an outdoor kitchen with a big dining table, outdoor cinema, sunbath and multipurpose area. Is the first pool of this kind and complexity with 5 different water depths, constructed using KUKA robotics milling. The blocks of high-density Polyurethane 4x4mt are modelled by robots in a different place, transported in the site and composed using special steel structure and varnished with a resin named gelcoat.
For fitness, we also provide a private outdoor gym area for enjoying the benefits of outdoor physical activity which is contained between vegetation and the beach atmosphere. The villa also includes a basement staff quarter, dedicated to service staff, underground car parking, laundry, storage, sauna and cinema room.

Five Great European Trips That Combine Culture and Skiing
Heading to Europe’s big cities after the Christmas markets have died down and before the flowers bloom is like wearing a suit on an overnight flight: People mostly tend to do it when they’re on business. From January to March, leisure travel to the continent shifts from urban hubs such as Amsterdam and Berlin to Alpine hangouts like St. Moritz, Lech, or Megève.
But European cities can be magical in winter, so why not do both? Pairing the delights of experiencing a culture capital or historical site with the adrenaline of a few glorious days on the slopes is a total travel twofer. Here are five such combos you might never have considered.
Go to Tbilisi … and ski in GudauriIs there currently a buzzier capital in Europe than Georgia’s Tbilisi? Travelers from around the globe have recently been captivated by its head-turning mix of old-world sights (like the fourth century fortress that lords over the city), unique culinary traditions, and Soviet-era architecture. While you’re there, check out Fabrika, an old sewing factory that now houses bars and artists’ studios—it’s a great example of Tbilisi’s booming art scene. Or find out why this is Eastern Europe’s hottest party city with late-night jaunts to Bassiani (abandoned pool turned techno hub) and Didi Gallery, a smallish club that attracts global house DJs.
Despite all its draws, Tbilisi is a compact city you can explore in just a couple of days, which means it’s easy to fit in the two-hour drive north to Gudauri, one of Europe’s most exciting new ski areas. With only 30 miles of skiable terrain and seven lifts, it’s not the sprawling winter wonderland of your dreams, but it is Georgia’s highest and largest resort, with excellent cat skiing, heli-skiing, and night skiing options. And it’s still growing. This year an almost 5-mile-long cable car route will connect Gudauri to neighboring Kobi, creating a unified ski area.
Where to stay: Rooms Hotels is a Georgian hospitality company that specializes in cool, hipster-approved accommodations with mix-and-match design, up-and-coming art, and internationally inspired, sustainable dining (the one in the capital is new American and serves a fabulous Georgian steak fillet). Conveniently, it has great hotels in both Tbilisi and the mountain town of Kazbegi. But if all you want is one great powder day, spring for a helicopter transfer from the capital to the slopes. It’s only a 30-minute ride, so you can hit first chair and get back to town in time for a pre-dinner massage.
Go to Cappadocia … and ski on Mount ErciyesThe otherworldly rock formations called “fairy chimneys” in Turkey’s Central Anatolia region have seduced many travelers away from Istanbul and Bodrum. But they’re just one feather in Cappadocia’s hat. There’s also Karanlik Kilise, an 11th century church decorated with stunning Biblical frescoes; the fascinating Goreme Open Air Museum, a Unesco World Heritage Site featuring several examples of rock-cut architecture that eventually became Byzantine monasteries; and the city’s famous cave dwellings, some of which have been converted into hotels.
Luxury operator Travel Atelier can organize everything from hot air balloon rides above the snow-blanketed chimneys to a day of skiing on a dormant volcano: Mount Erciyes is one of the Turkey’s largest and oldest resorts, with 34 runs that peak at 12,000 feet and spread across 70 miles.
Where to stay: Argos in Cappadocia is centrally located in the village of Uçhisar, making it convenient to both the city’s sights and Mount Erciyes, which is an 80-minute drive away. The property perfectly sums up all the region’s highlights. It’s surrounded by old-world vineyards (the hotel stocks an impressive cellar of Anatolian wines from 37 acclaimed producers); it has a cave suite with its own private pool; and its six mansions are linked by ancient tunnels and caves.
Go to Lucerne … and ski at KlewenalpSwitzerland is so small, mountainous, and well-connected that any of its charming cities will offer swift access to a variety of ski resorts. For art lovers, the picturesque lakeside town of Lucerne is an especially good choice. Its iconic Chapel Bridge is said to be Europe’s oldest wooden bridge and is covered in beautiful medieval paintings; the Rosengart Collection includes masterpieces by Chagall, Cézanne, and Picasso; and the diverse dining scene includes the lakefront Michelin-starred Prisma, where you can sample casual, fine-dining meals of curry lobster cream soup and scallops sautéed in brown butter.
Where to stay: The reopening of Bürgenstock Resort on Lake Lucerne’s southwestern bank has brought the destination plenty of renewed buzz. The 148-acre estate, previously the playground of A-listers including Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn, is fresh off a face-lift that added two brand-new places to stay: the marble-clad, five-star Bürgenstock Hotel and the wellness-focused Waldhotel, which is slated to become the country’s premier medi-spa. Multiple ski resorts can be found in the Bürgenstock’s backyard, but Klewenalp may be your best bet. Its challenging runs make you feel as if you’re descending straight into Lake Lucerne. (For something gentler, try Melchsee-Frutt, a family-friendly option 40 minutes away that has flatter slopes leading to a frozen lake.)
Go to Oslo … and ski in OsloIt took a long time for Oslo to develop the must-visit reputation its Scandinavian sisters Stockholm and Copenhagen have been enjoying for years. But cutting-edge architecture, art, and restaurants have finally put the city in the spotlight. Be sure to visit its two spectacular sculpture parks. The one dedicated to local artist Gustav Vigeland is the world’s largest, while the Ekebergparken features works by Rodin, James Turrell, and Marina Abramovic. That might work up your appetite for some of the city’s most lavish meals, like a 20-course feast paying homage to the Norwegian wilderness at the three-Michelin-starred Maaemo. (Chef Esben Holmboe Bang’s greatest hits include bone-in skate with salted butter and king crab glazed with buckwheat and spruce.)
If you want to experience Oslo as a local, take the 30-minute subway ride to Oslo Winter Park. With 18 trails, 1,250 feet of vertical drop, and 11 lifts, the park is small but impressive: From the top, you get fantastic city and mountain vistas. Added features, including Europe’s only public superpipe and night skiing, elevate the ski experience.
Where to stay: Oslo has few choices in the way of luxury hotels—but its best offerings are truly world-class. Pick the Hotel Continental, a recently renovated grand dame that reopens this week with all of its 153 rooms and suites thoroughly refreshed. (The owners added more art, including photographs by Solve Sundsbo, and custom-made furniture from Italy.) It also organizes ski packages that include lessons, private tours of the Ski Museum located at the base of the city’s landmarked ski jump, and helicopter excursions over the city.
Go to Ljubljana … and ski in VogelSlovenia’s jewel box of a capital offers a picturesque medley of Baroque buildings, plenty of green space, a pedestrian-only old town, and a 15th century hilltop castle. Balance the classic with the contemporary by visiting Zoofa, a women’s wear boutique stocked with independent (and all-local) labels, and Metelkova Mesto, a graffiti-covered army barrack that now houses an array of art galleries and clubs. Thirsty? The menu at Suklje, a wine bar in a whitewashed villa, runs the gamut of Slovenia’s surprisingly vast viticulture (the country has more than 28,000 wineries)—from crisp sparklings to acidic whites.
Getting your ski on requires a two-hour drive to Vogel, largely considered by locals to be the country’s best resort. It’s a visually spectacular place to ski. The mountain is inside Triglav National Park, and its eastern edge is completely untouched by human development. That doesn’t mean the mountain is lacking in infrastructure: Vogel has more than 190 acres of pistes, linked by nine lifts. After a few runs, warm up at the Orlove Glave Mountain Inn for a bowl of ricet, a fortifying soup with barley and local sausage. Assuming you’ve hired a driver for this day trip, you’d be wise to explore the restaurant’s deep list of Slovenian schnapps.
Where to stay: The months-old InterContinental Ljubljana, in a soaring glass tower just outside the old town, is the capital’s first truly modern hotel. Rooms have a residential feel and access to a rooftop restaurant serving classic Italian from chef Alfredo Russo. Post-ski day, make a beeline for the stunning 18th-floor spa, with its sauna and a zero-edge indoor pool overlooking the Alps.
Want to prioritize the skiing with a side of culture?Consider flipping the switch at these city-adjacent resorts. You can ski the Dolomites in northern Italy, with Venice just a few hours’ drive away; it’s also easy to connect with the wineries in Trentino or with the culturally fascinating towns that dot South Tyrol (a region with its own language and cuisine). In Austria, St. Anton am Arlberg has just been linked with several neighboring resorts, including Lech, and can be explored in tandem with Innsbruck. Or simply plan stops in Geneva or Zurich on your way home from Megève or St. Moritz, respectively. Both cities are compact, so you only need a short window of time.

Born in Portland, Oregon, SFAI alumnus Zach Mitlas (MFA/MA Painting and History + Theory of Contemporary Art, 2013) is a painter and multimedia artist based in Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Zach is participating in a traveling group show, The Third Space (All that we have in common), which recently opened in Zagreb, Croatia and will end in Lecce, Italy this December. We decided to chat with Zach to find out more.
SFAI: What projects have you been working on recently? Anything you’re particularly excited about?
Zach Mitlas (ZM): Currently, I am part of a traveling European group exhibition with the CreArt program, a network of 11 cities supported by the European Union. Our show titled The Third Space (All that we have in common) opened in May in Zagreb, Croatia, curated by Jovanka Popova. In September, the exhibition will come to Clermont-Ferrand, France, where I live now, and it will finish in Lecce, Italy in December. Since my return to France five years ago after finishing my Dual Degree at SFAI, I have had a solo exhibition in St. Étienne at La Serre, I have been a temporary resident at a local artist association Les Ateliers, and I have worked to develop a residency exchange between Real Time and Space in Oakland and with our residency program here in Clermont-Ferrand Artistes en Résidence. Last October, I was selected by CreArt to participate in an artist workshop titled "The Use of Photography as a Sculptural Material in Contemporary Art" in Zagreb. This past February, I also attended a one-month residency in Linz, Austria at the Atelierhaus Salzamt with CreArt.

SFAI: Where do you find inspiration for your work?
ZM: I'm really interested in the creative potential that comes from the degradation of painted surfaces. It's the fragile nature of paintings that is captivating for me, like the damaging effects of light that blacken a paint film or the changing atmospheric conditions that crack its surface. There is the birth of a new object due to the passage of time, including the new form’s trauma and defects.
On residency this past February in Linz, I worked on a project that began using found photographs from locations of the Solidarnosć movement in Poland. I also used photos I took in Austria, the last European country my father stayed in before getting political exile to escape arrest in Poland, due to his participation in counter-party activities. The photographs were used to make paintings on aluminum foil, which were then worn down and draped over wooden structures and exhibited with sounds made from shaking and hitting metal sheets. While I know the story of my father's journey well, I actually barely know him as a person, and using found material on the Internet has been a way to recreate this reality of my family story from digital information that is not actually an experience of that moment, just a compilation of pixels and waves that then become a new account of history. Overall, it's the fading collective memory of a nation that inspired my project at the Atelierhaus Salzamt, and the transitory and fragile nature of things that informs my work in general.

SFAI: What is your process for creating your work?
ZM: My current works are paintings on aluminum foil that are draped over various freestanding armatures. The paintings on delicate sheets are folded, twisted, crinkled and torn, evoking a process of degradation and trauma on the once pristine and smooth industrially created surfaces. Long painted strips are also pressed, while still wet, onto the face of neighbouring paintings, creating a mirroring effect that becomes the starting point for another picture. This process was informed conceptually by a reading of the book by Gilles Deleuze The Fold: Leibniz and the Baroque (1992), most importantly the concept of the world as something that is infinitely developing, never fixed and always becoming.

Path to no end, 2019. Oil and acrylic on aluminum sheets, wood; 23 x 18 x 550 inches (around the room); Open studio, Atelierhaus Salzamt, Linz, Austria, residency supported by the CreArt Network, co-sponsored by the European Union.
My last solo show in St. Étienne, France was at a municipal art space called La Serre. La Serre means “green house” in English, and it was in fact originally a place for plants, which is why the city preserved the vegetation in the space. I say that because the show was conceived mainly as a response to the context. Many of the decisions made in its realization were therefore inspired by the trees that still grow in the space and by the natural characteristics of the environment. The whole show explored the subject of erosion in various ways visually and dimensionally. The first part was painting on supports showing an accumulation of material, followed by a series of degradations, which then gave way to various erasures in following works.
Some pieces played on the context of the exhibition space, using shadows and light patterns to inspire the installation. Other forms included a painted detail of the site, and a wall painting became an experiment with retinal fatigue, where the leaves and trees I was seeing in the space stayed in my vision when looking to a fresh white wall, making it only natural to fix that image in paint. That piece was painted over at the end of the exhibition, forefronting its fleeting nature.

One wall was dedicated to using elements that referenced different locations in and around the city of the show. A mural painting was made with photographed fragments of the inside of a shower, which was influenced by the shower stalls one can find in the charcoal mine located in St. Étienne, an industry that used to define the economic situation of the city, but today only exists as a vestige of a time past. Another painting, this time on canvas, fused the detail of a brick wall, one found inside the exhibition space, and layered on top a graffiti signature that passersby glance at when walking in the street on the way to the show. Even though in the end this piece was rendered in paint, it was greatly influenced by using several photographs as a process of layering, bringing together elements from different locations into one frame, much like the Dutch still life painters of the 17th century did for their flower paintings which included blooms from different seasons and even from different countries.

Detail of work in progress at the studio.
SFAI: What are you working on now?
ZM: Aside from my own independent work as an artist, I run a window-front exhibition space called Off the Rail in downtown Clermont-Ferrand, where I invite local and internationally based artists to show curtain pieces at the front of my studio. In September, we’ll be presenting our tenth exhibition. So far, each artist that we’ve invited has presented something rather different from previous shows, and so the diversity of the programming is something that has come to define the space. The windowfront has become an association, and we’re in the midst of drafting a group exhibition with the 10 artists who have shown this past year. The exhibition will take place next year in Clermont-Ferrand at one of the local city-run venues. A catalog of the series of windowfront shows is also in the works to promote visibility for the participating artists. In terms of my own work, I’m continuing the paintings on aluminum foil which are either shown sculpturally or glued to a rigid metal surface. I’m also doing an artist book on aluminum foil that is based on images conceived from an account of the Polish revolutions from the 1970s and 80s. Formally, the book will explore the mirrored quality of pages and inverted content. I’m very excited about this project and am looking forward to seeing how some of these ideas can come to fruition.
