thinking about how harrow insisted that she can only share the ninth house’s secret with gideon if they are submerged in salt water. thinking about nona’s love of the ocean and about alecto being called a ‘saltwater creature’ on two (??) different occasions. also thinking about alecto’s favor to anastasia and the irony of the saltwater pool tradition being passed down through so many generations- but only on the ninth and with no real concept of where it started…

the only witness is the Alternate who has no specific role, and she has to figure out who caused it & if they might continue to sabotage, while they're figuring out a way to get back on course with limited resources

flips between present and the past: of her childhood and training for the mission, her identity struggles, and relationship with her mother

questions the ethics of ‘restarting’ humanity elsewhere vs putting resources into fixing earth

#the deep sky #yume kitasei #aroaessidhe 2023 reads #i really loved this!!!!!#very intense but also a lot of interesting character introspection #love the virtual reality AI aspect!!!! though I do feel like. in the end I was expecting it to go way further with it?#(basically like instead of seeing the inside of the ship all the time they can 'be' in forests or aquariums or whatever)#no romance #(there’s side lesbians; and one flashback scene where she briefly wonders about kissing a random person; that's it)#emotional core about her mother and brother and best friend !!#i like that it gets into the flaws of 'humanity's last hope on another planet' bc like. yeah in real life things....don't work like that...#why is there zero acknowledgement that the concept of every one of them being expected to give birth being extremely fucked up?#like obviously everyone on board is there because they agreed with that but there’s not a single flashback of #when they found out that information; or mention of someone questioning it...#(for example a character mentions that they hid their mental health/use of a therapy animal bc they wouldn't have been let in and the -#eugenics around that is iffy to say the least)#but to me. pregnancy is horrifying and nobody questioning that was weird.#also there’s supposedly 80 people on board but we get to know less than 10 of them which felt a bit strange at points #Also! I love the cover. I can’t find the designer (the book info only credits the internal lllustrator..)#also: bird facts!

I didn't realize just how much Little Town on the Prairie meant to me as a book. I've barely started and every bit feels iconic. This one and Little House on the Prairie feel more like home than most of the other books do.

#little house #little town on the prairie #little house on the prairie #laura ingalls wilder #of course those two also just have to be the most problematic #we'll just move along past the blackface folks #nothing to see here #i'm trying to parse out why i feel such a strong connection to these two in particular #maybe it's because there's a heavy focus on farming and carpentry and small town country life and that's the background i come from #i know that this one already has the best sisterly content #i had a post brewing about how odd it is that of all the classic 'woman writing stories heavily based on her childhood' books #this series has by far the least focus on sisterly bonds #this subject will probably be its own post by the end of the book #i have been loving the greater laura-carrie connection i've never noticed before in the past two books #though i wasn't sure if it was really there or if i just paying more attention after going to the carrie museum #but this book is really giving us laura-mary friendship at last #which is great cuz in the early books she barely talks except to fight with laura #so it'll be nice to see that develop #not to mention we still have the iconic desk scene #(if this book gives mary her due it does continue the anti-older-sister crusade with its portrayal of eliza jane)#anyhow i should stop writing tags now have a good day

Arya's educational set-ups are so potent in just her first chapter within the House of Black and White. Learning how to detect and tell lies, learning to master her facial expressions, and learning new languages are all extremely useful and versatile skills. George doesn't just have characters learning skills without intending them to be used either. Arya's lessons with Syrio + learned observational skills are integral to her evading capture in AGOT, what she observes and learns in Harrenhal helps her to plan her escape in ACOK, etc.

It's also interesting that some of her lessons are almost supplementary to what she's learned on her journey so far. Arya has already shown keen observation skills and the ability to read people's temperaments, so learning how to read deeper and detect lies feels like a nice extension of that. Same with her ability to conform her behavior to her environment, learning the importance of facial expressions and how to "rule her face" feels like the next step. Learning languages is new but also complementary to both skills. Her development is getting taken to the next level and I'm really looking forward to seeing how her new skills will be utilized.

the agony of marvel retconning pietro to not be a mutant, causing luna to not be an inmutant, basically never including luna in the comics and constantly deaging her so she stays 8-10 while other characters from her generation DO age, then several years later killing kamala khan, immediately resurrecting her, and begin calling her an inhuman/mutant mix and acting like this has never ever ever happened before,,

Ok, again, I liked Shadow and I should probably do my bullet point thoughts on the whole book before this but

literally what are they doing with Mothwing?

After River, I thought “ooh hoo hoo! Wouldn’t it be delicious if Mothwing became leader?” but it was mostly for fun (especially since I don’t love having another old leader, especially after Mistystar, and now especially if Squirrelflight hopefully survives to be made leader). But then after Sky it looked more like they were actually going for it with the “choose an unlikely cat” thing

But now in Shadow...Mothwing is a background cat, even more background than other formerly background characters? Despite being, by about halfway through the book, the only cat in RiverClan with any actual authority that doesn’t come from Tigerstar?? And she says and does almost nothing. She barely even does any healer work, off screen apparently suggests not even going to the Moonpool meetings anymore, she doesn’t even really fight with Frostpaw - she’s just kind of terse with her, she’s right about telling Tigerstar the truth causing problems, she snarks about Jayfeather, and attends Gatherings but says very little, despite essentially speaking for RiverClan in the two previous books. Otherwise it seems like she went from an incredibly chaotic experience having everyone in the clan look to her...to somehow having a lot of free time, and very little to say, despite losing her apprentice.

And I love getting to see more interpersonal drama in RiverClan and seeing Icewing and Harelight get more character development and the reveal of Splashtail’s machinations, but it’s bizarre how much should bring to mind Mothwing for the characters but instead she fades to the back and I genuinely don’t know if this is on purpose or not.

a ton of this book contrasts Tigerstar’s misguided leadership and Bramblestar’s decline

multiple characters bring up Tigerstar I and directly callout Tigerheartstar for also taking over RiverClan

multiple characters also talk about Bramblestar’s legacy, in addition to Firestar apparently always being on everyone’s mind

both of these characters are put in positions where they are trying to regain their sense of power/control, and are challenged on if they are doing the right thing

the book ends with the tension of one Tigerstar descendant deciding to do the right thing and willingly give up power, while the writing on the wall is that another will soon be fighting to keep his

HOW IS THIS ALL NOT SUPPOSED TO MAKE ME THINK OF MOTHWING, WHO HAS RECENTLY SHIRKED OFFERS OF POWER IN RIVERCLAN, AND WHO IS ALSO A CHILD OF TIGERSTAR

her brother tried to take over two Clans essentially in the hope of getting one scrap more of power

but she is so dedicated to service to her Clan that she won’t risk anything that could possibly cause them harm, which she thinks includes her leadership

with so many cats constantly being like, “you’re just like tigerstar the first, taking over RiverClan, aren’t you worried about being compared to your evil kin”

why is iT NEVER MENTIONED THAT MOTHWING AND TIGERSTAR II ARE KIN ANY TIME HE’s IN RIVERCLAN?? Does she not have any #thoughts or feelings to share???

we have juicy callouts for Icewing and Harelight spending a lot of time in ShadowClan, but suddenly, mysteriously absent in this book, is anyone casting doubt on Mothwing for also spending that time there and oh yeah, also being related to both Tigerstars who have taken over RiverClan?

it would be such an amazing arc for her to lead the Clan her kin could never

to begrudgingly assume power, but then fucking kill it in a way not even Bramblestar or Tawnypelt could

like Splashtail is talking about faking a sign to appoint a malleable medicine cat

that is literally what happened to Mothwing am I not supposed to immediately think about her. why is she then barely a character in this book. why are they deliberately paralleling another Tigerkin’s attempt at taking over RiverClan

also Mothwing should be the one cat Frostpaw confidently knows did not kill Reedwhisker and was not involved in any plot. Like both Frostpaw and the reader should trust Mothwing and no one else in RiverClan at the moment lol so she should be more of an actual character goddamnit

if nothing else, shouldn’t RiverClan/Mothwing be deeply concerned now about the lack of Medicine Cat apprentices? I know they have a lot going on, but that just proves how much they need a med cat. Mothwing ain’t getting any younger (unless she gets 9 lives), there are no kits in the nursery, and Leafbare is around the corner. And also something terrible keeps happening to RiverClan leadership lol Mothwing should have a lot to say and do in the main plot, and she just doesn’t for some reason this book

#chronic blogging #shit chat #well at this point both of my parents (who i inherited my Just Tough It Out streak from) have #upon hearing how bad my post-hysterectomy pain has been #told me 'umm no you need to go see someone.' and 'please just go to urgent care i will pay for it if your insurance won't.' respectively #haunted by the ghost of my right ovary (sharp stabbing pains & debilitating muscle spasms around the incision site)#it's been 1.5 years since surgery and it's getting worse not better #at my 1mo post op i was like 'hey right side hurts a lot worse & the incision seems really wonky & off-center. thoughts?'#they said it was nothing to worry about give it time i might still be feeling pain up to 6mo post op #sooo 8mo post op contact surgeon again 'hey remember that thing i mentioned? yeah still hurts bad enough i struggle to walk sometimes'#she says eeehhh maybe you developed pelvic floor dysfunction or always had it and surgery made it worse. read this book & do some stretches #book stretches & muscle relaxers helped for a bit so i just carried on but it was not improving in fact becoming more persistent #lil over a year post op contact surgeon like 'HEY do not ignore me i am in an amount of pain that is NOT NORMAL and you WILL see me'#drive 1+ hrs for her to poke at me for ~10 minutes ignore most of what i was saying and determine it's just muscle spasms do more stretches #said physical therapy MIGHT help if i did it 2x monthly for at least 6mo. which would've involved commuting over an hour during the workweek #no THANK you i'll just keep doing my stupid stretches. and the thing is.#the stretches ARE helping. i feel my overall balance/flexibility/stamina improving #but that by contrast is making the STABBING PAINS WHERE MY RIGHT OVARY USED TO BE all the more obvious #'oh it's just muscle spasms' well why the FUCK are my muscles spasming around THIS SPOT EXCLUSIVELY for SEVENTEEN MONTHS STRAIGHT #i have essentially no pain on my left side at all. i feel overall just fine & dandy but i am convinced there is something #like. very seriously wrong on the right side causing this #and yeah if my surgeon won't listen to me maybe i will check myself into urgent care and demand an ultrasound #(which btw i asked for during my last visit & she told me it was unnecessary & to fuck off)#but now the two people who instilled me with a very deep mistrust for the medical industry #and from who i learned from via a lifetime of observation how to dissociate from chronic pain in order to function #are telling me 'yeah no this is bad you need a DOCTOR.' umm. i probably need a doctor.#was talking w/ E last night about degrees of pain & like. avg day is like 4-6 on a 0-10 scale. good days 2-3.#i don't consider calling out from work unless it's like an 8 or higher cause i'm just so used to it.#i'm sick of it. so fucking bored with being in constant pain. i want my life & energy back. i want a personality beyond Oh Just Tired back.#i wanna be able to enjoy touch again with immediately hitting overstimulation threshold due to pain.
