I just got three email reminders: one for this year’s (virtual) Woodland Pattern Poetry Marathon, one for this month’s (virtual) BONK!, and one for the (virtual) induction party of the new ArtRoot Racine Writer-in-Residence. Thinking about Woodland Pattern (one of my favorite bookstores in the world; a place I’ve worked and given readings), and about BONK! (a long-running performance series here in Racine, which I have attended and participated in many times), then seeing the list of participants and performers for all three and how many of them are friends or acquaintances of mine... I fucking cracked. Just started sobbing.
For the first six months or so of the pandemic, I participated in or at least attended a ton of virtual events, and I frequently checked in with friends and family via text, or email, or phone calls. But since September (basically right after KC Zine Con), I stopped participating in or even attending virtual events. Mostly because at that point they made me too sad, because they reminded me of all the real, live events that aren’t happening. I miss(ed) poetry readings where some drunk dude heckled me for reading my Courtney Love poems but someone else said “Hell Yeah!”; I miss(ed) shows where everything reeked of stale beer and I had to go outside to smoke between bands. Zoom just ain’t the same. But not only did I stop attending virtual events, I also kinda stopped staying in touch with most people. I stopped going on social media (at least any social media where I had any real interaction with IRL friends), I stopped responding to a lot of emails (including the one which asked for my participation in this year’s Poetry Marathon), I keep postponing phone dates with various pals. I don’t even know why, entirely. Again, maybe because it reminds me too much that I can’t see them, hug them, buy them a drink.
Seeing all those names of people I love today... I gotta get back in touch. Respond to emails, make phone calls, start participating in at least some virtual events again. Because it might not be as good as in-person, but it’s all we’ve got right now. And because I don’t want anyone to think I’ve stopped caring, so that when it gets to the point where we can have real events and in-person hangouts again, they’ve given up on me.
I miss places. I miss my friends. I miss live performances. But I’ve been isolating myself even more than is required right now, and I’ve gotta stop.

ArtRoots funding period now open for community groups in Scotland
8 January 2019 , , ,
Community groups across Scotland are being given the opportunity to apply for up to £5000 in funding towards artistic and aesthetic improvements to their local National Cycle Network routes.
The ArtRoots fund, funded by Transport Scotland and delivered by Sustrans Scotland, seeks to empower local communities in making improvements on local routes to increase user confidence and make journeys on the National Cycle Network more enjoyable for all users.
The fund supports local enterprise and culture, and encourages communities to participate in shaping their local environment and increase their levels of physical activity.
“  The chainsaw sculpture has attracted enormous interest and an increase in visitor numbers. People now travel just to have their photograph taken with the artwork. ”
- Wendy Murray, East Haven Together
Throughout 2018, ArtRoots funding enabled East Haven Together to celebrate the maritime heritage of their village through installation of a stunning, chainsaw carved bench on National Cycle Network Route 1, empowered the Scott Avenue Community Garden Group to create a new community focal point for Bowling, and encouraged young people from Craigmillar to explore the possibilities of the National Cycle Network in their area through circus workshops and a glow parade.
Interested community groups are encouraged to submit an expression of interest through the ArtRoots page
Find out more about the fund, and submit an expression of interest from News http://www.sustrans.org.uk/news/artroots-funding-period-now-open-community-groups-scotland via IFTTT

The power of community empowerment and spirit
Launch of ArtRoots funded bench at Carrbridge
Path opening at Tyndrum, Loch Lomond National Park
The path at Tyndrum
Communities play a vital and often overlooked role in helping people walk and cycle for more of the journeys they make every day.
From identifying local routes and networks, which can make it easier and safer to travel actively, to boosting local economies by creating vibrant and attractive places for people to visit and spend time in, local communities have the power to make significant and positive differences to the lives of people living and working within them.
Over the past two months I have been privileged to have been involved in the official opening of a number of significant community-led projects and have been left impressed with the power local residents can have when they come together; a bottom up approach which is exactly what the Scottish Government is aiming to achieve through its Community Empowerment agenda.
Leading on walking and cycling paths
One opening was a new stretch of path in Tyndrum - famous for the Green Welly Shop and being on the West Highland Way. The new section of path forms part of a key section of the National Walking and Cycling Network and, as well as crossing part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, is also forms part of the Central Scotland long distant route, the Pilgrims Way.
Situated in the community owned woodland at Dalrigh, Tyndrum, the new path creates a circular loop from Tyndrum, allowing walkers and cyclists to bypass the very busy A82 trunk road.
The path was created by the Loch Lomond & the Trossachs Countryside Trust (LLTCT) working closely with the Strathfillan Community Development Trust, a charitable organisation with the aim of encouraging more people to get out and enjoy the great outdoors, with funding from a number of organisations, including £200,000 from Sustrans Scotland (Transport Scotland).
It was amazing to see so many members of the local community of all ages at the opening event, all thoroughly happy with the new path and all asking about the next phase – linking Tyndrum to Crainlarich.
Speaking at the opening of the new path, Natalie Stevenson from the LLTCT said:
“It has long been an ambition of the communities of Tyndrum and Crianlarich to not only provide a safe access route between the two villages but also to offer new local links to nationally recognised long distance walking and cycling routes such as the West Highland Way and National cycle routes.
“This ambition ties in with long term plans to create a network of paths running from the east of the National Park at St Fillans to the west at Tyndrum. This new path gives residents and visitors more opportunities for active travel, to enjoy recreational walks or bike rides or to join longer distance routes.
“We are committed to supporting local businesses and communities in achieving this ambition and are thrilled that we can now start work on the next sections around Crianlarich and Killin.”
Inspiring artworks on the NCN
Another example of a community-led project is in the Cairngorms National Park at Carrbridge, where there was the recent unveiling of a new artwork on the National Cycle Network to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the famous, old packhorse bridge at Carrbridge.
Here the community had successfully applied for funding from Sustrans Scotland’s Artroots Fund and the Cairngorms National Park to produce an artwork/bench which would be a feature in the community and on National Cycle Network Route 7.
The resulting bench has been designed and created by local chainsaw artists, Alice and Jeff Buttress, from a piece of local elm and celebrates all that is Carrbridge – from its local history and culture, to its stunning environment and diverse wildlife.
The opening was a truly memorable occasion with local Olympian cyclist Craig McLean officially unveiling the bench with the whole community looking on. The whole project was driven by the local community, in particular Maria Thompson-Slaven, project manager and chairperson of the Carrbridge Tourist & Business Association, showing just what can be achieved with determination. The community is now looking for funding to create an interpretation panel to enlighten all as to how the idea of the bench came about.

Communities can make a real difference to their local area, and it has been truly inspiring to see people coming together to make it easier for others to walk and cycle for more of the journeys they make every day.

Do you use visual inspiration when you create or do you try to make a go of it with what you’ve filed away in your memory? Most of the time I choose memory over a visual piece. I’m often paralyzed with fear when creating from someone else’s work. Instead, I’ll study a beautiful or inspirational piece for a few moments, hours, even days, then close the book on it. Sometime after that, whether in that moment or days later I’ll try to pull snippets from my memory. I don’t attempt to recreate the piece as a whole, but instead try to recall the colors, lines, shapes, or composition that first captured my attention. I like creating this way. It feels safe and allows me to remain authentic when I make art. I’d love to hear your favorite way to collect art ideas. Is there an art technique that you love that’s rooted in the basics? For me it’s etching in paint. I never get tired of this rudimentary process. Whether I lightly scratch the surface or dig deep and scrub away at the layer it offers me a welcome release when I create.
