“Dawn breaks, colors paint sky / Lantern Series” title from @chatgpt 🤖 A more subtle aspect of my painting practice is titling. Most artists, especially those making work for years, will have to find a system that works for them and their art. For me, I started with the classic “untitled” for the first few years out of art school. But as time went on and I made more paintings, I needed more distinction, so I started using a few words that literally described elements in the piece—for example “Branch and blossom, red”. After a while, the descriptors started to read like poems, which I felt was appropriate, and good. It was at this point, around 2014, that I started looking to the writing of others for my titles: lines of poetry, lyrics from songs, passages from novels. I have a cache of screenshots and notes that I reference, and I try to hold onto the words that grab me, so that I can use them for just the right painting that comes along. The titles are like a secret note to the world, marking a place in my own life or things that happen in culture; sometimes it’s a connection to the painting itself. It’s varied and personal, and not something I need people to know to enjoy the piece, it’s just another dimension I suppose, some extra information for others to seek out if they’re curious. For titling this painting, I was interested in what AI and #chatgpt might generate, so I typed in the instruction “write a non-rhyming poem of five words about dawn” and I think what the program came up with was actually wonderful, so I’m using the words that it? They?
