Completely putting aside the queer rep thing, I'm curious: Do people who are not book fans generally like the Good Omens TV show? In the book fandom we've been hoping for a live adaptation for decades but myself and a lot of other book fandom olds were very disappointed by the show. I was hopeful and optimistic about it until the trailer with the wall-slamming scene came out, which was the first clue that the characters were going to have a different dynamic in the show. (Book! Azi and Crowley would never. No, I mean it.) And then as soon as I got to the dove scene - which the show messed up completely - I had a really bad feeling that they weren't taking the book's themes very seriously.
(In the book, Aziraphale suffocates the dove through negligence and immediately forgets about it because he's too busy fretting about the Apocalypse and the hellhound not showing up; Crowley notices it and takes the time to resurrect the dove. The seeming role reversal there of the angel carelessly killing an innocent creature and the demon taking the time to care about the sanctity of life even while scared out of his mind that the Apocalypse is coming (which would mean all humans and doves everywhere were going to die) is a wonderful little early symbolism of the characters being more than their official Evil/Good labels, of their flaws and virtues, and of the overarching theme of the book. But in the show, Aziraphale kills the dove and is then the one to revive it, which makes the point of the scene ?????)
There's a lot of little things like that where I wonder if the creators missed the point of those scenes or just didn't care, and the end result is that the characters become a little flatter, a little less like the stereotype subversions they're supposed to be. (I've long been irritated with the show fandom because it felt like many of them just projected their longstanding bad boy/puttering intellectual favorite ship dynamic onto the two and didn't look too closely.) In addition, the angel and demon are very nearly B-list cast in the book. They're scene-stealers but in terms of plot they actually achieve very little, their arcs are about how they accept that they've grown as people, not about how they contribute to the Apocalypse. Because that's the point. The whole point of the book is that humans don't need angels and demons to be good or evil. Humans stop the Apocalypse and arguably start it. When the show puts human characters in the background and both elevates Azi and Crowley and spends additional screentime on new characters like Gabriel, the overall message is retained but makes for far weaker tea.
So like... it is very hard for me to like the show as an adaptation (some manage to enjoy both book and show as separate things, and I'm happy for them). At the same time it feels silly saying that it's a bad adaptation, because things like Eragon and Artemis Fowl and basically most book-to-screen things are out there. But I can't help but look at Neil Gaiman's background and the things he usually writes about and feel like TV GO has been made too much into his work, rather than his and Pterry's, and is ultimately weaker for it.
So for me it's really hard to judge its actual technical value as a standalone thing, but I'm curious what other people think of it. If the above elements of "huh, that scene seemed kinda random, why was it even here?" and general diluted sense of theme was something people picked up on.
--
I tried to read the book a few times in the 90s because it was ubiquitous. I loathed it and never finished.
I thought the show was well acted and had delightful chemistry between the leads. The cinematography and editing were nice. The costume design was excellent.
It isn't a particularly deep show or all that memorable to me, but it looks pretty, and Michael Sheen is hot.
Honestly, I'm not really the audience for the original themes. They've been done a million times by now (and even by the 90s), and they just remind me how much people think I should care about a Christian world view and how much I profoundly don't. It's like when people want me to care about Watchmen because something something deconstruction of 80s comics I didn't read.
The biggest change between the 90s and now is probably that this particular flavor of Cold War spies who are buddies when their bosses aren't watching has faded into obscurity instead of being absolutely everywhere.
Oh, and Queen is cool again.

Were I'm from it's now a couple minutes after midnight, so HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
The Artemis Fowl bookseries should reach you in 4 days :)
Whenever you finish reading it, you have great after-option. One of the best crossover fiction with Artemis and the Avengers (Thrower of the Dart by Vathara). And something inconsequent to rage about if you look at the movie trailer (really really bad)
Have a great birthday and stay healthy!

Damn your artemia fowl fanfic was really good. I only read the first book, do you find the series worth reading today? & also what made you want to revisit it in a fanfic/the way you did?
Hi! I have absolutely zero recollection of why I wrote TGGH. It was like 4 years ago and I genuinely have no idea why I wrote it. I remember I finished it because the trailer made me BIG mad, but I don't remember why I started writing or how/why I got the idea. I think maybe I saw somebody else's trans Artemis fic and went "I could do WAY better than this"? Or maybe I just thought of it wholesale? Weird, but I hvae no clue.
Re: rereading - interesting question. Answer is kind of. It's still a lot of fun, and it holds up as still enjoyable. I had a lot of nostalgia for the series, which probably helped, but they were genuinely fun to reread. They're excellent kid's books. However, as an adult, rereading the series you do start asking a lot of questions you never did as a kid - especially about Artemis' parents, his upbringing, and the weirdly constant hostility from everybody towards this poor kid. I've always been bugged by Artemis/Holly, but tbh it's even worse in retrospect with the "she is a whole-ass adult" thing, and I've also always been unhappy with its portrayal of psychologists. "Psychologists are idiot quacks" is a bad message to kids, very Wexford. I also got to thinking about how I would adjust Orion a lot, since you have to feel like there was a lot of missed potential there. The later books are also weaker/less fun than the earlier ones, although that may be because I was younger when I read the earlier books so I have happier nostalgia.
Why was Artemis/Holly. Why.

I feel like seeing the Lockwood and Co trailer has given me so much more expectation for the show because I’m still recovering from the dissapointment of the Artemis Fowl movie and I cannot express how little I was allowing myself to be excited for this show until the trailer showed itself to be so good!!

Some positive things, widespread and personal, from 2023
Hello all here's my annual good things roundup, and as always I'll be missing a good lot of stuff that happened bc I'm pulling from the top of my head and also I'm running late.
In no particular order:
Some great indie animation stuff this year, with Hazbin Hotel news and episodes of Helluva Boss continuing and then the Lackadaisy pilot and fundraising campaign success!
Got the end of The Owl House early in 2023, and while it was not the ending we all would have hoped for, it was an incredible ending all the same and absolutely so well made.
Avatar: The Last Airbender has a new official TTRPG game, several of the OG cast did a playthrough of it, AND the trailer for the live action TV series doesn't look half bad! Also, Toph's VA has been reacting to the series. Overall it's been a great year for ATLA fans.
CLAMP announced that the continuation of the CCS Clear Card anime is on its way, and the Clear Card manga finished this year! The kids are okay!
Game movie wins! Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, along with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, were both great adaptations and fun movies where previously adapted movies of the same properties were so awful they make Artemis Fowl look barely passable!
Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse was super freaking incredible cinema and stupendous animation and score. And the animators got a break from having to cram the Beyond the Spiderverse movie in a year jfc.
The WGA and SAGAFTRA strikes I wouldn't consider positives on their own; however, the overwhelming solidarity across the lines and from us the fans and everyone in the same working boat helped the WGA and SAGAFTRA strikers stick it to the studio execs being literal cartoonish villains and get the things they were asking for after a brutally long strike period where the studio execs absolutely wanted them all to lose their homes and suffer. Power to the workers! WGA and SAGAFTRA strong!
BARBIE. No notes. 100000/10. You go girl.
But also the meme of Barbenheimer, absolutely genius.
GOOD OMENS SEASON 2!!!! HOOO BOY Neil Gaiman really shook us to the core with these ineffable celestial lads
The Marvels was a lot of fun! Kamala Khan and adult Monica Rambeau finally got to the big screen and they were so good altogether with Carol Danvers! Sadly didn't get great box office, but the movie itself being good makes up for that in my eyes!
Wonka was also a lot better than expected! Very fun and wholesome and heartwarming! Not bad Timothee Chalamet, not bad.
Critical Role's The Legend of Vox Machina season 2 was incredible, and a Mighty Nein animated series was also announced to be in the works! Plus, we got a Mighty Nein live show in London! And Candela Obscura premiered this year as well! And the Exquisite Exandria cookbook dropped in August and it's been so amazing.
Dimension 20 has been popping off this year as well, and several of its cast started Worlds Beyond Number, which is on a whole other level of inspirational and awesome.
On some personal notes, I got to spend time with good friends this past year (and getting one into TLOVM and Critical Role too, which has been fun)
And in that vein, I got into a bonafide Dungeons and Dragons campaign this summer, based from a oneshot I played in April by putting myself out there and trying something new. And man, this campaign has been one of the best things in 2023 let alone maybe my whole life. I'm so grateful to be a part of it and to keep going.
And this past summer, I got to go to a convention and meet several of my favorite actors including the cast of Smallville, Charlie Cox, Dante Basco, and Jason Liebrecht! It was so much fun.
I spent my birthday with my whole immediate family and went to Disney Hollywood Studios and had such a blast!
And I started more actively sending my writing out to litmags! While nothing has been accepted yet, I am ever more determined to be published!
There is much more good that happened in 2023 but for now, this is a good sample to end the year and beckon the new one forth with the same and even more positive vibes.

so it took them like 20 years to make the artemis fowl movie, then when they finally finished it wasn’t even that good (as far as i can tell from not having seen it at least, i plan to eventually probably but the trailer made it look Bad)
and then it got delayed, and then downgraded from theatrical to disney+, and then now after less than three years, they’re removing it. somehow both really funny and really sad

A bit of a rant:
I avoided watching Artemis Fowl after seeing the trailer cause it looked silly which really wasn’t the vibe of the books.
I’m cooking and thought why not…..my original decision was correct.
Talk about in name only. They changed the whole story. And worst of all they changed the main character(s) so much they may as well have just given everything other names and made something new.
Where’s my insufferable evil genius?
Rant done but I needed to shout into the wind to get it out (only 30 minutes in and so many feelings)
(This probably only matters to me right now but still!)

Snow Queen
taking a short break from The Artemis Goes On Multiple Disastrous Blind Dates Saga for TEC but Artemis is Shot Instead TWO
tw for light description of a bullet wound, artemis is literally dead rn
@artemis-fowl-angst im pretty sure you asked for a tag so :)
<-back -- you are here
Domovoi sat across from Artemis' pod, chin resting in his hand. The icy cold mixed with Artemis' snowy skin reminded him of the old fairytale 'The Snow Queen'.
All it had taken was a quick phone call to Domovoi's old friend Justin Barre and few glares to Dr. Lance Constance and he had his cryopod, Artemis nestled in the pod's freezing blanket.
Dr. Constance's took a look at the boy's bullet wound, eyes sliding over to the Eurasian man's Sig Sauer he was cleaning. My God, he killed this boy. Was her first thought. But then why would he want him frozen? To preserve him, perhaps? Maybe this man was one of those maniacs who kept trophies to commemorate their crimes.
Dr. Constance did her work quickly, wanting to get away from the giant man in the room with her as fast as possible.
Domovoi watched her hustle out, wiping down his gun. If there was anything he could rely on, it was that glare of his. He sat in the trailer, watching Artemis sleep.
Sleep. He's sleeping, that's all. And he's in a cryopod because of another one of his hair-brained schemes.
His eyes fell to the bullet hole in the boy's chest, and his own chest tightened. He reached out a hand, brushing aside a strand of Artemis' hair that had fallen in his face.
"Don't worry, little buddy." He mumbled. He was surprised at himself for bringing up his old nickname for his charge, back when he followed Domovoi through the winding halls of Fowl Manor, clinging to his pant leg. Mister and Mrs. Fowl thought that their son hadn't spoken yet, or that he was simply shy. The truth was that little Artemis would only talk around his Butler, or as he called him, 'Bubba' which later turned into 'Baba'.
"You're gonna be alright." Domovoi continued to talk to the 'sleeping' boy. "I'll take care of you." He stood, sighing deeply. Fresh air. He needed fresh air.
He stepped out of the little trailer, breathing in the cold London air.
Immediately he felt that something was off. He concealed his suspicion, thinking to himself, 'Haven't we gone through enough today?' If there was a God, He must really have it out for Domovoi Butler.
Subtly, he swept as much of the area as he could without giving the appearance that he was looking for something. It's possible that Blunt had come back to finish the job.
"Hello, Butler." Said a familiar voice from behind him. Domovoi released a breath.
"Holly, you nearly gave me a heart attack." He sighed. Holly snickered. She straightened out quick. "You know what a ping is, Butler?"
Domovoi nodded. "Artemis explained it to me." His heart panged at the thought of his charge. Holly's appearance had taken his mind off of him, if only for a short moment.
"We were pinged." Holly said "According to one of Foaly's gizmos, the ping came from this area. Seeing as you're here, I'd say Artemis was too. I'd also say that Artemis was the one who pinged us, so where is the little shit so I can punch him in the face for putting my city on lockdown?"
Domovoi looked away guiltily. Holly caught his eye. Apprehension crawled up her spine.
"Oh, gods." Holly breathed when she saw Artemis laying in the cryopod, bullet hole driven through his chest. "What happened?"
"Business deal gone wrong." Domovoi said simply. He said nothing of his own failure, nor the fact that he began hearing voices.
Holly stared at Artemis for a long while, thinking. She shouldn't feel bad, she shouldn't. But at the same time, Artemis was only a kid, wasn't he? He had only turned thirteen a couple months earlier. He was a baby.
She sighed sadly, crossing her arms and shaking her head solemnly. "It's his own scheme that got him killed, wasn't it?" Gradually, Butler nodded. "He showed a billionaire his latest invention, this super-computer shaped like a cube. He offered to keep it off the market for a couple years and give the man a head start." His throat tightened as he remembered the fear on his charge's face. "His bodyguard shot him."
"That bodyguard have a name?" Holly asked. Her voice was slightly strained. "Arno Blunt." Butler said. "And the billionaire's name is Jon Spiro."
Holly spoke into her helmet mic. "Foaly, you listening?"
"Are you kidding?" Foaly's voice came over the speaker. "This is better than human soap operas."
"You got files on these guys?" Holly asked. Foaly whinnied. "Of course I do."
As Holly and Foaly talked, Butler didn't take his eyes off Artemis. He watched his charge lay there, pale and still. This was supposed to be the last one. The final scheme. He hadn't even gotten the chance to be good, not even a chance. He was a baby. He didn't deserve death, no matter the bad things he had done. That was what he was taught, right? And he had done good. He saved Holly's finger and also her career. He cured his mother's depression as well. Albeit, it was Holly's magic that had cured her, it wasArtemis that made the deal.
        Holly's magic.
Butler whirled towards Holly. "Can you heal him?" He asked, straight to the point. Holly blinked at him. After a moment, she shook her head sadly. "I can't heal him. We need a trained warlock for this job." She said. She tore a cooling pack off Artemis' chest, placing a hand over his heart. "Besides, there's nothing here. Not a single beat. I'm sorry, Butler, but Artemis is gone. Long gone."
Butler took Holly's tiny shoulders in his hands. "Can you at least try?"
Holly still looked unsure. "Sure, I can try," she said. "But there's no guarantee that it'd work, and even if it did, he might not come back the same."
"What do you mean, 'not the same'?"
"I don't know!" Holly threw up her hands. "Nothing like this has never happened before, anything could happen for all I know."
Butler tapped his hand against his thigh in thought. After a while, he said, "I want to talk to Foaly."
"I speak for the People, Butler." Holly said. "And we don't take orders from humans." It hurt her to be so cruel, but she had to be stern. She didn't want to accidentally give Butler false hope that his charge could be saved.
"Please, Holly," Butler pleaded. The urgency in his eyes had Holly heart sinking. "I can't just let him go. It's Artemis."
Holly couldn't help herself. After all, Butler had saved all their hides on more than one occasion.
"Fine," she sighed. "But he won't have any good news for you."
Butler hooked the speaker Holly handed him over an ear, fixing the mic stem to where it wound across his mouth.
"Foaly, you there?" He asked. Foaly's voice was tinny and metallic over the speaker. "Yup, wouldn't miss this whole charade for the world."
"I just need a healing." Butler said, straight to the point. "I know it might not work, and I'm okay with that. But what's the harm in trying?"
"It's not that straightforward, Mud Man." Foaly replied. "Healing isn't a simple process. It requires talent and concentration. Holly's pretty good, I grant you, but for something like this we need a trained team of warlocks."
"There's no time for a team of warlocks to get here." Butler snapped. If you had told him that this sentence was something he'd say without a drip of irony or sarcasm a couple years ago, when the most action he faced while caring for his charge was the occasion tantrum, he probably would've grunted and forcibly removed you from the manor.
Foaly was quiet for a long time. "Butler, if we agree to try this, I have no idea what the results would be. The effect of Artemis' body could be catastrophic, not to mention his mind. An operation like this has never been attempted on a human."
        "I understand."
"Do you? Are you prepared to accept the consequences of this healing? There could be any number of unforeseeable problems. Whatever emerges from this pod is yours to care for. Will you accept the responsibility?"
"I will." Butler said without hesitation. Then, he added, "I've always cared for Artemis. I'm not giving up on him now."
"Very well, then it's Holly's decision. Nobody can force her to use her magic. It's up to her."
Butler kept his eyes on Artemis, still inside his pod. He couldn't bring himself to look Holly in the eye.
"Will you do it, Holly?" He asked after a moment of silence. The bodyguard sounded weaker than Holly could recall ever hearing him. "Will you try?"
Holly brushed ice from Artemis' brow. She looked deep in thought.
"I'll try." She said. "No guarantees, but I'll do what I can."
Butler tried to conceal his relief. "Thank you, Captain." He said. "What can I do?"
Holly pointed to the door. "You can get out." She said. "I need a sterile environment. I'll come and get you when it's over. And whatever happens, whatever you hear, don't come in until I call."

i rewatched the artemis fowl movie trailer (i still need to work up the guts to watch the full movie) and my soul actually irreparably shriveled up inside me:
like for one
WHY. IS. ARTEMIS. WEARING. A HOODIE AND T-SHIRT. he would sooner die than be caught wearing that unironically--angeline is the only person in the entire world who can convince him to even think about it.
when holly said she was artemis' friend from the other side, i felt so much second-hand embarrassment cause i know she would rather kiss mulch (with tongue) than let those words cross her lips
im sorry for giving you the above mental image
but not as sorry as i am for how disney had one of the best morally grey and complex main characters under their pen and they wrote the most ??? script ever????????
they just. completely threw the whole guilt and growth arcs out the window and pulverized it with a 500-ton truck.
was that not what the entire series about?!?!?
a tear leaked out of my eye when the movie artemis said the criminal mastermind line
anyways if i ever watch the movie expect a full 50 pages of me going:

I was going to enter Artemis Fowl myself, but I just finally got the courage to watch the trailer for the godawful movie and he's not even fucking Irish in it. sure yeah he still counts as having a canon British accent but it's not the kind of British accent he is supposed to have. heartbroken bc hes one of my very favourite characters and bc not a single person has submitted any characters with Irish accents but actually I'm taking him out of the running :(

Pretty much. The original cut of Disney’s ‘Artemis Fowl’ did have Butler be called ‘Butler’ — but all mentions were dubbed over with ‘Dom’ after the test screening audiences pointed out the unfortunate implication Butler being just called Butler had now that he was being portrayed by Nonso Anozie instead of being depicted as Russian-Japanese as in the books (and it was really not a good look for them, like even by standards of good look — like to the casting lady, I would say that should have occurred to her on Day One — that she really should have read the book). Holly was also white for some reason. And the person who voiced Opal also played the Ho Chi Minh City sprite in a deleted scene. It was not a good film.
It looked horrible from the trailer. I'm just amazed absolutely no one watched it, it was on Disney plus for fucks sake.

FINALLY someone i cant be a Hater about the new pjo series with!!!! im just gonna list some grievances as someone who has watched the trailer. first and foremost in my opinion is what the fuck are they doing with the gods?? like at least the kids look correct in costume with set trappings etc, Ares rolls up in a non-descript black shift essentially looking like a garbage sack full of potatoes when hes supposed to be the most intimidating the most bad ass the most biker gang leader esque, and they have this man in a trench coat, and dont EVEN get me started on posiden!!! HE LOOKED TERRIBLE!!! OH MY GOD!!!! UR TELLING ME THIS SHLUBBY WHITE BOY WITH A BEARD THAT DONT MATCH HIS HAIR COLOR PULLED QUEEN SALLY JACKSON???? show her some fucking respect and at least give ur posiden a sexy hair cut, the dude looks like a cult leader on a commune ffs. it also looks like they are WILDLY changing some the of events?? ie hermes and mr d look like they are both at the lotus hotel???? any way thank you for being a safe space for me to unload some hate for the new series lol
Hi! Yeah, it doesn’t look very accurate at all (but neither was the movie!) and I won’t bully you for being frustrated with it. It’s rough being excited for a hopefully-faithful-hopefully-even-improving adaptation of a favorite story and then having a company disappoint you. I experienced that with Artemis Fowl.
I mean to express no hate toward the actual real people involved (cast and crew); I was just hoping for a show that captured the books well and brought it to life, maybe even made it better, and it doesn’t look like it’ll be that way even just from the trailer. I’m sure they all worked hard, and the effects look amazing, and I hope they had fun making it; it just isn’t what you or I wanted and it’s okay to be frustrated! Good thing we always have the source material to enjoy as it was written. Thanks for venting!
