i think a lot of diehard book-only tvc fans are massive weenies about the changes the show has made but at the same time i find myself mostly consuming fan content by book fans because even if they’re weenies about that they do NOT shy away from how fucked up and insane those vampires are about each other. meanwhile it feels like most of the show-only iwtv fans write fic like they’re competing in the therapy-speak olympics and it’s SOOOOO BORING. GET WEIRD WITH IT OR DIE.

Quiet Luxury in Dubai
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of people have commented on how boring the wardrobes are in the present day interview section and while I think the black is definitely a choice of mourning on Louis's part, the clothes that he wears throughout season 1 are also reflective of the quiet luxury aesthetic, which is very monochromatic and features mostly neutrals, white or black (almost always one palette encompassing the whole outfit). This is a trend that tends to gain popularity among the ultrawealthy during times of economic hardship so as to not appear ostentatious but while the designs and garments themselves are simple, most of these pieces cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. While it may have inititally started as a way to avoid drawing attention to their wealth, it's now become a way to flex your wealth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trend gained further popularity with the show Succession, which features a cast of billionaire characters wearing mostly simple but insanely expensive outfits. Think Kendall's $625 baseball cap. Even though we've only gotten one shot of the real Armand in s2, I believe his wardrobe now that the Rashid mask if off is going to reflect "Succession" chic. Simple corporate attire that probably costs more than your life's savings.

"And if Daniel was sluggish, Armand would push him into the shower, soap him all over, rinse him off, drag him out, dry him thoroughly, then shave his face as lovingly as an old-fashioned barber, and finally dress him after carefully selecting from Daniel's wardrobe of dirty and neglected clothes."
The Queen of the Damned - Part I, Chapter 4: The Story of Daniel, the Devil's Minion, or the Boy from Interview with the Vampire
This is for @bark-han too. I was so happy when I read your request. I love that scene so much (I mean, who wouldn't) that I'm doing a series of fanarts to honor it. You can see them here and here 😊

maybe a weird take but I think clothing also tells a story about a character. Guillermo dressed the hottest he’s ever been during s3 (and the night market scenes in s4) in which he goes full slayer-mode, his style I believe reflects how much confidence he has. You could tell he was feeling himself and yes mama put the slay in vampire slayer!!!!
I havent done a rewatch yet to see if I’m remembering right but I think in s5 we saw NONE of that, he was back to the stifling sweaters, cardigans and vests and there was barely any change in his wardrobe, nothing resembling the lax styling of s3&4 either. Being a vampire did nothing for him after all, huh. As excited as he was about progressing his powers, he didn’t magically become Armand like he thought he would, it didn’t boost his self esteem even a nick higher. On the contrary, he reverted back to s1&2 visually. It didn’t scratch the itch in him he wanted gone.
Something something show dont tell

I know I said this before, but I keep thinking about that person who asked about our take on how in the show, we never see Louis flirt with Lestat but we see him flirt with Jonah and then again with Armand in the teaser for season 2. And thinking about how that plays into the very interesting and disconnected narrative Louis tries to paint in the beginning of this story is s fascinating.
The way the Jonah scene is played, we're lead to believe that Louis is only doing that to "get back" at Lestat, who is rather unabashedly pursuing a fling with Antoinette. And we KNOW Louis is not happy with that. So since it's "allowed" to be open for both of them, he pursues Jonah, and thus the flirting.
But when we see him flirt with Armand in season two, for the most part, Louis has no reason to flirt with him to get back at Lestat. It's just him feeling Armand and wanting to pursue that. And it's funny because now that we're seeing this twice, we have to realize that Louis is flirtatious by nature. He flirts with men he likes. But if that's the case, why don't we ever see him flirt with Lestat?
I'm rewatching the series rn just for some background noise while doing some chores, and it's so funny seeing how Louis presents Lestat. As if he didn't see what would happen next coming. Lestat insults him when they meet, but wins him over at the card game. Lestat calls Louis his destiny, and Louis supposedly just thinks he's a weird European. Lestat relies on Louis to help him get settled in (builds a library, but we rarely see Lestat use it; Louis is the reader. Updates his clothes to styles more similar to Louis', etc).
But Louis tries to pretend he wasn't into this. No offense, but what man needs to accompany another man to get clothes? At night, too? If Lestat wanted to upgrade his wardrobe, he could have went to a tailors/whatever, and they would have pushed and encouraged whatever the modern trends were (especially when they saw how wealthy Lestat was). He didn't NEED Louis there, but there is Louis "helping." He admits that he "found himself" confiding all his struggles with another man outside of family (as though Lestat forced him to or some shit lol), and calls fucking Lestat his "coal fire" through the winter months.
It's obvious with these contradictions that what Louis is saying and what we're seeing isn't the full picture. He acts like he was just casually hanging out with Lestat, casually befriending him. But he admits that the clothes makers they went to had to open their doors later than normal, and that Louis was there for fittings and the such. He admits spending time with him, talking in parks, going to operas with him. And after all of that, admitting how much Louis made himself vulnerable to Lestat, then has the nerve to say he was being hunted. And even follows up saying "and I didn't even know it."
And sure, he didn't know Lestat was a vampire, so kinda fair. But in terms of their relationship, let's be honest: Louis was being courted, and he fucking knew it. And if he truly didn't like it, he would have cut it off quickly. Louis is obviously trying to play down how much he was courting Lestat back. Taking him to get clothes at night, going out for gumbo and stuff--foods Louis would have grown up eating and loving--walking around the park and putting him on to a bookseller Louis likely loved; Lestat was not the only one on the hunt.
I love watching this back and thinking to myself how Louis is trying to downplay how flirtatious he must have been with Lestat then. It was apparently so obvious to everyone around him that it got back to his sister how he was "catting" around town with a white man, but he wants us to believe that he was the one being hunted. It was so obvious that when Paul asks about their relationship at dinner, their sister and mother get quiet because they know damn well what it was.
But no, Louis, it was totally one sided and you def did not ever flirt with Lestat and make it known how much you were into him. Yeah, we buy that lol.

Tagged by @mothmage to share the last line I wrote on a WIP. Thank you!
I'm going to cheat and give you a whole paragraph. 👀
Daniel has found a drawing of himself and wonders if it was Armand who drew it...
Armand didn’t stop rooting around in Daniel’s wardrobe. “No. A burglar came in while you were asleep. He saw you and – overcome by your beauty – decided to draw your likeness instead of alleviating you of all your earthly possessions. Your ‘looks’ have made him see the error of his ways. He has taken himself to a monastery where he will spend the rest of his days illuminating manuscripts with your face. This shirt is atrocious.” He threw the offending article of clothing over his shoulder.
No pressure tags for @akinmablog, @bandedbulbussnarfblat, @saintrayne and anyone else who wants to do this.

interior design insp/references dubai edition
Just like with Louis's wardrobe in Dubai I feel like there's a lot of misconception about the design of the penthouse and what it's meant to represent. First of all, dark modern was and still is super popular design style amongst the wealthy!! It's a very popular way to style large open spaces (like a penthouse apartment). Light and airy designs are usually intended to reflect more natural light to make your rooms look bigger but when you already have a MASSIVE space that's kind of unnecessary. Also it doesn't need to be said that these are vampires so enhancing natural light with bright wall colors/furniture is utterly irrelevant and quite frankly counterproductive to them. You would rarely see a very dark design in a tiny apartment though, that's why its popular mainly among the super wealthy in their mega penthouses or modernist mansions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Black furniture also screams lux because it's a PAIN in the ass to maintain like lint, dust, grime, etc gets everywhere constantly so by purchasing black furniture you're pretty much announcing to your guests that you have a maid who cleans for you cause your rich ass sure as hell isn't dusting that shit every day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While the overall aesthetic of Dubai I would say is highly modern, there are interesting touches that suggest a couple that has collected items through time. In the first screenshot, you see Daniel and Louis sitting in the ultra modern living space while Armand is off to the side at his very mid-century chair, a very early hint that he's maybe from a different time.
Tumblr media
Looking at this shot, you can see as many as 4 different design styles in a single frame. The table is clearly ornate traditional, the chair (which looks like rattan or bamboo) is more mid-century/boho and the japanese garden, and finally a little pink modern organic henri dejeant lamp. It's such a perfect representation of how long Loumand have been alive and together cause its normal for couples to accumulate different pieces over the course of their lives together and try to fit them in even though they don't exactly match the current designs. But this is what happens when you've been together for 75 years!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's also interesting to see how the design choices of the penthouse evolved because an earlier visualization had a green mario bellini couch instead of a dark grey/black. The bellini couch was a 70's design that made a huge comeback in the last couple years, which is like the WHOLE 2nd interview like someone from the 70s who has entered the picture again after a long absence. However, I bet they probably pulled back on the bellini couch cause it was becoming overdone although it is still mega expensive (comes in at around $20k) but it's kind of become one of those ughh not that shit again kind of item.

Lesmond and the sentence "I fear our love is unsustainable"
So I am not going to manage to stick to 5 sentences basically ever and I gave up. Thanks for the prompt, anon! Feel free to send a pairing and first line and I will get to it sometime this week with a little ficlet or drabble!
"I fear our love is unsustainable.”
Armand froze in the doorway of the small balcony that jutted off the side of his bedroom, his feet bare on the soft carpet. He’d come out of the bathroom from trimming his auburn hair—he’d meant to do it when he’d awoken before he’d been so rudely distracted—and the words caught him off guard.
Instead of responding, he took in Lestat. He had a wistful expression, tanned hands holding the railing of the balcony as he looked out over the city. He wore a collared shirt, unbuttoned and whipping in the wind like his blond hair, and boxer shorts. Armand had been planning to drag him back inside before the neighbors saw him out there half-dressed and then he’d spoken.
What a thing to say! There was love between them, yes, of course. They were brothers in the blood, as Daniel was so fond of saying, and what they’d just done… He could see the fading mark on Lestat’s thigh, just beneath the hem of his shorts. He looked at his own wrist where only the faintest hint of a bite mark still stained his pale white skin. But they hadn’t dared speak in such bold terms about it yet, not when this type of intimacy was still new between them.
“You and Louis?” Armand asked, intentionally obtuse, leaning against the door frame. “Perhaps you should simply concede him to me.”
Lestat shot him an irritated look and Armand had to suppress a smile. He was so very easy to rile up and Armand got such pleasure from doing so. “You would steal him from me. You’re a heartless creature,” Lestat said.
Armand felt a slight sting at that. He didn’t dare show it. He smiled in the most sinister way he could manage and said, “A ruthless monster, in fact.”
Lestat frowned, his lips curving downward. The tiniest crease appeared in his brow. “Do you ever worry you’ve taken on too much?” His characteristic cockiness was gone.
Armand did, of course. He thought of Trinity Gate being filled with people during nearly every crisis. How he’d built and maintained a safe home for so many of the people he loved. But he wasn’t sure if that was what Lestat meant. “No,” Armand lied. “Do you?”
Lestat shifted from one foot to the other. Lestat didn’t answer. But Armand knew he did. He had been talking about the burdens of the throne just last night with Daniel, as they set up the conference room here so he could attend some meetings at Court remotely. So they all could. Anyone who might have need of it.
Armand stepped onto the balcony. He moved behind Lestat, wrapping his arms around Lestat’s taught, muscular body. He was cool and solid, and Armand could smell his cologne, sharp and spicy. He breathed him in. He could almost smell the sun on his skin from his last tanning session. Such a strange thing for a vampire to do. Only Lestat would have the ability and choose to use it.
Lestat leaned back against him, and Armand held him tightly. They stood there not speaking for several moments until Armand heard a door open from one of the houses next door. Trinity Gate was massive and his room was in the middle, but they would still see them plainly enough if they glanced over from their own balcony.
Armand pulled back and took Lestat’s hand. “Come, let’s go inside and get you dressed properly.”
Lestat, for once, obeyed without arguing, although he pulled his hand from Armand’s and walked past him into the room. “First you want to tear my clothes off, now you want to dress me like a doll. Can you ever make up your mind?”
“I want no such thing,” Armand said. Just because he’d bought Lestat a new wardrobe, it didn’t mean anything. He’d arrived with almost no clothes and Armand didn’t want him ruining things from Daniel and Louis’ closets.
Lestat grinned as he went over to retrieve some of the clothes from last night’s shopping trip. “You’re a liar.”

So, I always accredited Louis’ drastically different past/present wardrobe to a natural shift in taste over time. But, taking Armand into account, it appears that Louis’ style is controlled by or, at least, greatly influenced by Armand.
In the early days, spanning nearly thirty years, Louis consistently wears light and varied colors. Light grays and browns, creams and off whites, even pinks, reds, and blues. His coffin has a rich green interior. His robes and pajamas are striped and multicolored. In Dubai, he is exclusively dressed in black in every scene. And, beyond that, everything he wears is in the same style category as Armand’s attire (except for the hoodie but that’s because Armand is in business mode). You could take anything Louis wears in Dubai and put it on Armand and it wouldn’t seem out of place. With how much control Armand has over Louis’ life and possessions, it’s understandable that he would buy Louis’ clothes and align them with his own tastes.
Compare below:

Versus:

Symbolically, this color change is great but they went the extra step in making the clothing undistinguishable from Armand’s.
