Co-curator, MICROCLIMA
Tumblr media
2016-2023.
Serra dei Giardini, Venice, IT.
Since 2016 I have co-curated, coordinated, and produced projects and exhibitions of MICROCLIMA, a cultural project founded in 2011 by Paolo Rosso. MICROCLIMA is based at the Serra dei Giardini in Venice, but it also has branches in other cities in Italy, India, and Mongolia. MICROCLIMA was born with the purpose of giving a new social and creative life to a public orangery that had been abandoned for years and was the first structure ever created for the International Art Exhibition that began in 1895. Through experimental synergies and actions generated by professionals and amateurs of all kinds, Microclima seeks to stimulate the interest of the discovery, or rediscovery, of a delimited area and its social, symbolic and cultural aspects that characterize it as such.
MICROCLIMA curates multiple initiatives and projects also outside of Italy, such as The Guwahati Research Program, an artistic residency based in the capital city of Assam, India and RedHero, a long-term local and international project built around Mongolian arts and culture.

Steampunk is an installation made for @tab_2019 and built from steam bent timber elements in a collaboration of @soomeenhahm.design, @sixthofmarch , @fologm and @formatengineers. . Standing on top of a small mound, the timber installation gives the topics raised during the Tallinn Architecture Biennale a prominent visual manifestation in the cityscape and will remain in place until the biennale’s next edition in 2021. Standing at a height of 4 meters (13ft), the pavilion was created using analogue tools augmented with the precision of mixed reality environments. according to the design team, ‘Steampunk’ rethinks applications and traditions of craft in pursuit of their evolution, and challenges visitors to reassess how they view contemporary architectural design. The installation explores an adaptive design and fabrication system that is resilient to wide tolerances in material behavior and fabrication accuracy, occupying an in between state that is neither purely analogue nor purely automated. . ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ Project done in collaboration with @soomeenhahm.design, @sixthofmarch , @fologm and @formatengineers⠀ ⠀ Design Team: Gwyllim Jahn, Cameron Newnham (Fologram), Soomeen Hahm Design and Igor Pantic. Venice Architecture Biennale 2016 - Through the eyes of a young designer
Summer 2016 saw the 15th annual Architecture Biennale to take place in the beautiful city of Venice. Being lucky enough to visit was an incredibly inspiring and motivating experience for a young aspiring designer like myself. 61 countries all took part in exhibiting and designing a pavilion of their own to reflect and respond to issues both globally and specific to their own economy and issues in which the architects and designers may have the potential to address. The pavilions are mostly positioned in the Giardini whilst a small few at the Arsenale, and the rest are scattered across the city of Venice.
The vast range of issues addressed are all amongst the same theme, ’Reporting From The Front’, was astonishing. How was this statement taken and stretched in so many different directions. We went from visiting the Swiss Pavilion, which was a personal favourite, consisting of a giant cloud like structure hollowed out with cracks and crevasses allowing you to manoeuvre through representing the connection of nature and architecture; through to the more thought provoking exhibition in the Polish Pavilion which was curated to shed light on the danger and hard work construction workers endure every day to give us the architecture we are surrounded by, and give them the attention and appreciation they truly deserve.
However not all of the exhibitions were so heavily architecturally inspired; Ireland targeted the brain disease Dementia and how those living with this disease perceive the fragmented world surrounding them. They aimed to raise awareness to this by working along side psychologists and health workers as well as suffered themselves to create a sympathetic perspective of what they experience day to day.
The whole experience of the Biennale for me was amazing, just down to the intense and cruel subjects some of the countries tackled, and succeeded with a sympathetic approach. Visitors travelled from all over the globe to see how this community of architects would represent their country and ongoing issues they may be facing in their day to day life; and I’m positive they won’t have been let down. I will never fail to be impressed by the power architects and designers, who are often forgotten about, have in facing global issues and tackling them in a way no other profession could.

Forests of Venice pavilion offers a peaceful retreat from the Biennale crowds. Venice Architecture Biennale 2016: Swedish studios Kjellander + Sjöberg and Folkhem have installed a wooden pavilion between the Venice Biennale venues, in tribute to the 10 million trees used to build the city's foundations. The Forests of Venice pavilion stands alongside a 19th century greenhouse, between the Giardini and Arsenale venues, offering a secluded retreat for Biennale visitors. . Venice Architectural Biennale 2016 - The Curators Room
On day two of the Biennale the Arsenale was the site we would explore. The first room you are surrounded by when entering the Arsenale is the Curators Room, a personal favourite by far. This room stood out to me from the vast sea of scrap metal suspended above, and layers of plasterboard lining the walls making you feel enclosed and intimate within the space. It was only after spending a few minutes taking in the atmosphere of this room that it clicked these materials were all recycled elements from the previous years Biennale. This captured my attention even more as I appreciate knowing waste is being repurposed, especially when it’s used in such a unique way.
The lighting in this room shone down through the gaps amongst the metal fringe above making the room feel like it was closing in on you. The beams of light cast beautiful shadows on the floor and visitors below, every part of this room was thought through amazingly to create atmosphere and draw you through the threshold into the rest of the exhibition to follow.
Furthermore, as you wonder round the four walls of this room, tiny screens scatter the surfaces playing clips of the curators during meetings, visits to the sites, press conferences and even parts of the installations taking place. This gives a very personal feel to the exhibition as it is telling a story of how they have jumped from the initial planning stages to the finished exhibition, which you are now standing in. It’s almost like a sneak preview of what is to come, creating lure and intrigue.
Every corner of this room captured my interest and made me question everything the curators did, yet understand exactly why they did. Such a immense room as the entrance could have been slightly overwhelming to visitors and acted in the opposite way in which they intended for it to, however the way everything was perfectly thought through and placed just worked.
