How could clans handle something like an abusive mentor? Those situations seem very unlikely, but it's probably happened. What about if a mentor and apprentice just end up being kind of a bad fit?
Apprentice-mentor duos are usually very carefully handled - a mentor will know well ahead of time what apprentice will be theirs, because the leader will talk to them about it and if they're even interested in mentorship in the first place. It's important to the Clans that the two get along well, or at least work together efficiently. A mentor is essentially a third (or second) parent to a teenager who needs to learn how to take care of themselves and their Clanmates. It's very crucial that you don't screw that up.
That being said, an abusive mentor has absolutely happened before: bullying, physical punishment, neglect and other abuse are, unfortunately, definitely found in the history of the Clans. These things are usually caught pretty quickly and handled so long as the leader is competent. An abusive mentor is generally punished by having their apprentice taken away and they themselves being tasked with apprentice duties, sent to isolation or having some rights to Gatherings or food revoked. It can get more severe, depending on how drastic the abuse is, but those are the most common punishments.
When it's just a bad fit, that's not anyone's fault, except the leader's. That is a very simple job of just switching out the mentor, if it's possible. Rarely, a mentor and apprentice are stuck together because there are no other available warriors, in which case sometimes the deputy or leader will take on the apprentice themselves until a proper switch can be made.

Our character applications are also currently OPEN, so you will be able to submit your character as soon as you join the server!
This wave of server member applications (along with our character apps for The Everglade Warren, The Darksand Ambush & Shared Territory) will be closing Sunday, January 27th at 11:59pm CST.
For this round of character applications, we have three TDSA apprentice slots (1 combatant, 1 architect, 1 nurse) open to be claimed on a first come first served basis. We also have a handful of high rank positions available in both TEGW and TDSA for application which you can find more information about on our website. So with lots of fun opportunities available, we can't wait to see what you'll come up with!! (Note: just a brief reminder that all new characters will need to be former outsiders (kittypet, loner, etc) in order to avoid retconning.)

an interesting premise that's been rolling around in my brain: the clans and educational neglect? like sometimes cats have to double up on apprentices but some cats get kinda left behind. iirc,darkstripe and tigerclaw suggest doubling up when the time comes to apprentice fernpaw and ashpaw,and earlier,tigerclaw and lionheart both sort of mentor firepaw before he's switched to blue
The mentor/apprentice system is SUPER underused in the main series, especially as the series goes on. It's like it gets pushed to the side in favor of the familial drama, which is fine, but like... START with warriors, then?
I gush about TPB all the time but... maybe TPB should stop being so gush-worthy. The apprentice system in it is SO much better than later. Not only do you really FEEL like the main mentor is super important to the growth of the apprentice (Dustpelt's emotions towards Redtail, Ravenpaw breaking down over the first book, Firepaw and Bluestar), it ALSO so much less restrictive and open!
It's just... normal for apprentices to train with other warriors, end up on patrols without the main mentor, hang out on their own when they're not training. It really is like being a teenager and becoming a young adult, it's great.
And we should entirely get more cases of educational conflict. It sucks that no one mentions how Graystripe just utterly failed Brackenfur, or that Twigbranch had a whole journey about learning how to mentor her apprentice offscreen. I want bad matches, or mentors who are good friends but awful teachers, or even apprentices who are TAKEN from mentors who are doing a bad job.
It's such an untapped potential.

Turns out one of my apprentices has been teaching someone behind my back. He had his own secret apprentice that he was teaching everything that I taught him. Apparently, he had plans to overthrow me with his apprentice.
I’ve never been prouder. Both of them have been cast into the astral plane.

Cultural question not about the nursery! Is a parent allowed to request a specific mentor for their kit, or is that seen as being a bit too overbearing?
Apprentice-mentor pairs are largely decided by the leader and deputy. Parents can rarely speak to the leader and make a suggestion, but that's a special case, for, say, a disabled or mentally struggling kit - someone that the parents would be seen as the best authority on because of the difficult situation that kit is in. Otherwise, parents are usually assumed to be biased and wanting a mentor for their kit that may not be the best for them to grow into a strong warrior with, so they're expected to stay out of the process unless specifically brought into the discussion.

Changes to the Afterlives
Dark Forest cats have the wounds that killed them in the DF, but not when visiting living cats or in dreams.
StarClan cats are similar, but have galaxies covering their death wounds, med cats have plants on their pelts, leaders have crowns of stars
All cats who died before becoming warriors (kits and apprentices like Swiftpaw) get reincarnated without their memories. They recover them in StarClan.
