Aposematism is when a poisonous or otherwise gross/ dangerous/ unprofitable species uses pretty, bright colours (or some other noticeable signal) to warn predators “Do Not Eat!”
Unfortunately, many predators are not born knowing this, so they generally have to learn through trying something new and having a very unpleasant experience!
AKA: aposematism (usually) relies on predator learning!

Aposematism
"Aposematism is the advertising by an animal to potential predators that it is not worth attacking or eating."- Wikipedia
This occurs when the animal has defenses such as toxicity, venom, foul taste or smell, sharp spines, or is aggressive. Signals which notify the predators that they are dangerous include coloring, sounds, odors, etc.
The most common occurence of Aposematism is visual indicators, e.g bright colors, and high-contrast patterns.
"This term was coined by Edward Bagnall Poulton for Alfred Russel Wallace's concept of warning coloration."
The term was based on the Ancient Greek words ἀπό apo 'away' and σῆμα sēma 'sign'.

Terrestrial Juvenile Eastern Red-Eft Newt by Mark Via Flickr: Terrestrial Red-Eft Newt Salamander Avery County, North Carolina Mountains Accessed via the Blue Ridge Parkway (mp 300ish) Date taken: May 13, 2016 Website | Facebook | FAA While leading an individual workshop in the mountains of North Carolina my client pointed out this crazy colorful orange newt along the trail. Thanks to his good eyes I sprinted back to the car, grabbed the macro lens and snapped a few photos. Apparently Eastern Newt's are pretty common. They have three distinct stages of life: the aquatic larvae stage, the terrestrial red-eft stage (shown here), and the adult aquatic stage. During their terrestrial stage, they're known to wonder far and wide, boldly during the day, to disperse and populate other bodies of water throughout the area. Their orange coloring is an example of predator adaptation, signaling a warning that their skin contains toxicity.

Seven Red Suns biomechanical dragon concept, very rough sketch, design will likely be changed and refined.
Depicted in normal colouration (top) and threat display/darksun colouration (bottom). Artificial chromatophores permit colour changing at will or under preprogrammed circumstances.
Credits @medi-bee for making me think of dragon iterators in the first place, and @ressioo for inspiring the threat display colour scheme.

Raf latched on to the cheap dollar store star-framed sunglasses because he half-consciously felt that the 10 foot radius AoE tackiness they emitted would serve as an adequate deterrent against the kind of folks who'd to chum up to him for the optics.
Unfortunately, and wholly unbeknownst to him, those clunky plastic frames have been assimilated into his natural charm, providing a +2 charisma modifier, instead.

the calculus does change a little bit if it's the first snake species i ever encountered up close back to see me again (coral snake, antivenom only recently started to be produced again) but even then, stick wins. they're very polite. bats aren't very polite.
