tl;dr for my bi vs gay mike truthers video
basically, summarized, through my own research ive concluded... mike wheeler is....
unlabeled!!
i don't think the whole bi vs gay mike truthers thing needs to be a thing. like i dont get why it was ever as controversial as it was. you can very much interpret the first few seasons of stranger things through the lens that mike wheeler did in fact have a crush on el. or, you can support the theory that neither of them had a crush on each other, but mike felt a sort of comp-het impulse to have a crush on el. whichever theory you support is fine.
but, (if you believe this) just because mike never had a crush on el doesn't mean he can't be bisexual, mike could very well be gay as well & only experience attraction to men, but honestly, who cares! i don't think we need to force a label onto mike if the show doesn't want to give him one (yet, if they do in s5, i will update this).
being a bi mike truther doesn't erase mike's obvious queerness, & being a gay mike truther doesn't make you biphobic. it's just not how it works. at the end of the day, mike wheeler is queer in some way shape or form whether he chooses to identify as gay, bisexual, unlabeled, or whatever the fuck he wants.
i'm learning different styles of literary theory & criticism in my english classes right now, & i think something that they said in the class about criticism & theory about writing (& various forms of media, it doesn't just have to apply to writing) is that criticism & theory helps us see stories & interpret things in an infinite number of ways, & i think that's really nice. the only problem is when people start declaring their theories as true.
i've fallen into this, i'm sure a lot of bylers have, into the over analysis train. as much as i love theorizing about byler, looking at the cinematography & writing & editing & lighting & whatever, at the end of the day, we're all just theorizing based on the evidence that is presented to us. just because a light shines on will doesn't necessarily mean that mike sees him as his sunshine & true love, but we can definitely theorize that that's what it means! & after byler is confirmed canon in s5, (or god forbid it's not), we can finally have a resting answer to our theories. but again, a story is a story, you can still have theories about it even if the show is over.
it's your choice whether or not you want bi/gay mike truthers to interact with your page, it's your social media experience & you should be able to tailor it to how you see fit. the only thing i get upset about is the fighting over it. i just think the whole super heated debate about it is a bit silly.
anyway, that's my two cents. this was longer than what i thought it was gonna be & honestly more comprehensive than the video, so. i hope this makes sense. if you're a gay mike truther, you're valid. if you're a bi mike truther, you're valid. if you're an unlabeled mike truther, your valid. if you're using your analysis & theories as facts & as justification to be mean to others over the internet, you are in fact NOT valid.

I'm working on a Mishanks piece for Whumpuary, tentatively titled Holy Heathens. It's going to be a self-contained one-shot for the AU I posted about priest-warrior Mihawk and heathen Shanks. Angsty (because we love a Mihawk who is so out of his depth) and very much playing around with the canon timeline (they've only just met like two weeks ago in the fic and are both adults) and I'm having so much fun writing! I don't wanna do too much worldbuilding but it's cramming its way in there anyways. So far on track to finish in January! I wanna keep myself motivated so here's a short fragment to share the angsty joy:
The first time Mihawk met the priest, he'd had other things on his mind. The duel with Shanks, the tie, the sheer strength of the man, the bewildering question of how a heathen could have such faith. It had been eating at Mihawk, and he'd gone to the priest of the small island solely to collect more information on his target.
He almost never approached his brethren clergy if he could avoid it, but the shaggy, redhaired sailor had surprised Mihawk. Shocked him, really. He didn't know where else to go to discuss the issue. The laypeople he'd tried to approach sang Shanks' praises or shrugged haplessly or muttered something barely comprehensible in their terror at his presence, no doubt remembering a neighbour slighted or a friend wronged and imagining Mihawk was about to wreak terrible redemption on their heads.
Not helpful for deciding if a heathen could somehow be holy.
And as distracted as he was, Mihawk had taken about half an hour to recognize the signs. The fact it took so long is shameful, though he doesn't judge Shanks for not realizing fully that a devil was possessing Father Dresch, no matter how long it had been. As a Redeemer, Mihawk's training was brimming with ways to spot possession and sense demonic presences. Surely some backwater godless hadn't received such training.
Although apparently he had enough training to fight Mihawk to a draw. Whether that spoke to Shanks's intense proficiency or a dearth in Mihawk's training – a failure of the Church or Mihawk himself – was something he couldn't answer.
Regardless, the devil had not been disguised as well as it was claiming. "Fooling peasants is one thing," Mihawk says coldly, "and a Redeemer another thing entirely. You spent too long among peons if you forgot that." He pauses, returns the devil's stare with derisive aplomb. "The dirty hovel you were staying in suited you well, though."
Pain. It explodes inside him so suddenly that Mihawk cries out before biting off the scream. The agony continues in a billowing, hot miasma through his essence, and it's not until his forehead is grinding into the church's cold stone floor and the fire slowly ebbs that Mihawk realizes the devil has made him prostrate himself at its feet. As if kneeling wasn't enough.
Devils should not be able to influence him so much. The humiliation is an added pain, scalding his skin and making his heart pound like it's trying to find a way through his ribs. Could the devil really be such a powerful creature? Or is it something Mihawk has done or failed to do?
Even as he has the thought, it rings true.
Sweet Christ, just how badly has he allowed himself to be compromised? And all because of a fast sword and a captivating smile. All because of scarred eyes and a heathen who spoke about faith in a way that left Mihawk aching with dissatisfaction for what he didn't understand.
For the first time since he broke through the church's doors, Mihawk is – not afraid, exactly. Or not afraid for his life. But he has not faced the prospect of failing one of his missions in more than a decade. He was supposed to investigate Shanks for heresy – a polite wording underlined by the tacit understanding he was to be executed – and now the man has probably lost his life and assuredly his arm defending Mihawk from an actual devil.
And Mihawk is going to fail. Fail his mission and fail Shanks, the heathen who ordered him with such ardent authority to do his duty.
The devil steps closer and it doesn't matter now. In his agony, in his negligence, Mihawk lost his grip on Yoru. He can barely turn his head, the skin of his forehead scraping against the floor as the devil's compulsion keeps him prostrated, and his eyes fall on the proud, black sweep of the blade. Not far from his hand. Still too far if he can't move.
And he barely can. But because he can, he does. Nothing could keep Mihawk still with Yoru so close. His hand drags across the ground, reaching for the solid familiarity of his weapon –
The demon steps on his fingers. Not with particularly spiteful weight – it doesn't want to damage his body, especially not when it can torture him in other ways – but hard enough to hurt. To pin him.
More confidant now, and with Mihawk's insides shuddering in bewildered despair, it's no surprise, the devil reaches down. Actually touches Mihawk, if only to grab his hair in a fist and wrench his head up, making him meet those not-Shanks eyes. Too red, too red.

Do go off about the logical fallacies in Chapter 4, I always thought something was off about it. I'm curious to know your thoughts
Oh... if you insist... (currently bouncing off the walls with excitement ask??? I love answering ask—) ahem.
I suppose I can categorize my perceptions of Chapter 4 into levels of objectivity, with the highest being "I'm sure anyone with reading comprehension can understand the point I'm making and how this logic plays out" and the lowest being "I'm just petty about this"
Disclaimer: I'm a Kokichi liker but I kinda bash the guy in here. I insist it's out of a sense of love, as in "why the hell did you do that you little—" (my point is maybe don't read this if you're too too attached to Kokichi and don't like the insinuation that he did some bad stuff. Generally I assume this is a safe topic though.)
Let's start with my most objective take!
The murder setup was kinda garbage (might rephrase this heading later) (I didn't. fight me)
I know this sounds like opinion but hear me out. This is where the phrase "logical fallacy" really comes into play.
Let's outline Chapter 4 real quick. Miu is planning to kill Kokichi, and obviously Kokichi doesn't want this.
What are Kokichi's options from here? Apparently, one of them is reusing the motive from earlier in the chapter (the truth of the outside world) on Gonta to convince him to kill Miu under the guise of a mercy kill plan. This way, Kokichi doesn't die. This is what happens.
There's a lot to be speculated about regarding Kokichi's motivation for enacting this plan, but let's take the view that, first and foremost, Kokichi did not want to die to Miu.
With that out of the way, let's move on to the next piece of this defective puzzle: Miu's motive. We can cover this in two parts:
Part 1: Miu wants to kill Kokichi to escape the academy.
We can assume this much because she tried to set up a murder that would be near impossible to solve, as she would have had power over all the information available regarding the workings of the virtual world.
Kokichi makes the point in trial 4 that Miu coerced everyone to enter the virtual world so that she could manipulate the setting of the crime completely. She wanted to set up a murder that looked like it could only have happened in real life, while withholding the information that would reveal it was possible in the virtual world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kokichi was the only one who knew quite a few of the finer details that allowed case 4 to be solved, and she planned to kill him anyway, meaning these details wouldn't have come to light. Since her intent was an unsolvable murder, she wanted to get away with it and escape.
Part 2: For what reason did Miu want to escape?
We can see that she wanted to change the outside world with her inventions based on her own words in Chapter 4. In a flashback of the moments before she was killed, seen in the Chapter 4 post-trial, she explains this explicitly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her belief is that the outside world can be saved if she can only escape back out into it. She believes this is her duty as the Ultimate Inventor.
And finally, we reach the point that the logical fallacy falls into place. If we first assume that Kokichi Oma is a cunning individual who plans things out meticulously and considers all possibilities (thus allowing him to do ridiculously clever things like plan his own, truly unsolvable murder and write an entire script of dialogue for Kaito to use in trial 5), then we can assume that his actions in Chapter 4 are reflective of what he views as his optimal plan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yes, in-game evidence shows that we are, in fact, to believe that Kokichi Oma is inhumanly smart and analytical. A script. A SCRIPT, with lines for every possibility he could possibly envision. It's a freaking tome of borderline clairvoyance ahksfwosfawei (as you may notice I do not like the existence of Kokichi's script. A SCRIPT. I may be a Kokichi liker but am I really supposed to believe he's a freaking clairvoyant????? like can't you clairvoyant the end of the killing game bro????? and I adfkaweoiefdfshkj)
See, the thing is... Kokichi's optimal plan, having Gonta murder Miu... is... not... optimal...
There's an alternative solution. All the pieces are in place for it to work. And the salt in the wound, the twist of the knife...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...Is that Kokichi himself already knew the mechanism I'm about to propose.
If Kokichi wanted to survive Chapter 4, he could have removed Miu's motive to leave.
Using the already planted Flashback Light in the Virtual World which contained the memories of the true outside world, Kokichi could have demotivated Miu from even killing him. Her motive was saving the outside world, and Kokichi had what would have been irrefutable evidence that the outside world was unsaveable.
This logical fallacy could be explained by reasoning that Kokichi's motive for having Miu killed was not only to survive, but what then? What would Kokichi's motive have been otherwise? Maintaining a mastermind act?
Why would he even need to do that if he could have lobotomized the killing game by letting everyone find the Flashback Light in Chapter 4 to begin with?
Maybe that means the logical fallacy stems from the ultimate use of the outside world motive in Chapter 5, when the truth of the outside world is used by Kokichi to demotivate the entire group. If, say, seeing the outside world led everyone to become bloodthirsty for some reason (?) then I guess that dodges the fallacy?(??????) It's just kind of a garbage motive in general... it didn't even work as a motive when Kokichi used it, and it demotivated the others. Makes you wonder why it was even included.
I guess my point is that the logic really doesn't add up in Chapter 4 and 5 in exchange for some thoughtless added drama. Y'know, typical writing issues stuff.
Um... I spent quite a while writing this one part up, and this is the view that I care about most, so I might split the others into another post, if I even do another one.
In case I don't, I'll just do a quick overview because they're really not nearly as necessary to explain in depth:
The cord switching bit. With the rest of the Virtual World segment riffing off of games and gaming knowledge, the dissolution of suspension of disbelief hit me like a truck when I was told to believe that Gonta reversed the cords and the whole thing basically ran fine, with just the one issue of memories not transferring back. I... am a modder. I type C007_Ki-bo instead of C007_Ki-Bo, the game crashes. Hell, even without being a modder, I have a drawing tablet with 3 cords and if I don't plug them in right, it won't do anything (duh). No way am I buying this.
Not a logical fallacy, but more of a story writing shortcoming. It kinda sucks that Gonta barely had a substantial role in this chapter despite being the culprit. He didn't plan the murder he committed, and he didn't defend himself for the murder he committed. I get that the idea was probably to make a case centered around Kokichi more than Gonta, but (and I say this as a Kokichi liker) we see enough of Mister Oma as it is. Too much, maybe even. (I mean Kokichi has Chapter 5. He DIES in the Chapter 5 case but still plays a role in the trial. And we're really gonna just have him take over trial 4 when Gonta isn't seen for the rest of the game?)
(content: discontent towards Kaito) Also not a logical fallacy. Maybe not that much of a fallacy at all. I might just be petty but I thought Kaito was cringe the whole time. (okay me and Seb literally had to get up, close the game, and go take a walk outside because we were losing it from everything Kaito was saying. DO YOU???? NOT KNOW WHAT A HYPOCRITE IS????????)
A bit of a shill I guess, but I did write two fanfics which were heavily influenced by my views on chapters 4 and 5, which tried to remedy these fallacies and others in V3. Canon-compliant Bloodied Hands renders Tsumugi the ultimate mastermind behind every murder (not just Rantaro's) with her dramatic meddling leading to the emergence of V3's logical fallacies, while The World is His takes the same premise, just diverging from canon such that Kokichi lives.

Hello! Love that I've found your blog. I love Ancient Egypt and have been on-and-off trying to learn a lot about it. I have some questions if you're still answering!
(1) What are some good resources to learn more about specifics of Ancient Egyptian magic? Academic magical studies is so interesting to me.
(2) What are some good books/resources for learning about religious syncretism? The way gods from different groups were equated with each other is endlessly fascinating to me, like how Romans thought that the Norse worshipped Mercury (Odin) when they came into contact with the Germanic tribes. I believe I've read that Hermes and Thoth were equated? It would only make sense that something like that would exist between Greek and Egyptian. But was there something like that with other groups, like Sumerian, Phoenician, or Canaanite?
(3) In terms of resources and ease of learning, which phase of Egyptian is easiest to learn? Is it Coptic, and, if so, where can I find resources to learn it? I'm running a roleplaying campaign based heavily on Ancient Egypt, and having some phase of the language (even if Coptic—the players wouldn't care if it was) would be really nice to have. (Actually Coptic would make more sense lore-wise anyway…)
(4) Resources to learn more about hieratic or Demotic script? Or at least a big hieroglyphic to hieratic chart of some kind.
You will need to learn about Egyptian religion as well as Heka, since they are intrinsically linked. You cannot have one without the other. There are some books on religion in my FAQ. There's also a book by Robert K Ritner on Egyptian magical practice in the FAQ, but I've fetched it for you:
ngl, it is an academic text, so it's not designed for a lay audience. That being said, it's the most comprehensive we have, so do your background reading on Egyptian religion before tackling this book.
2. Not my area. I don't touch anything after the Late Period.
3. It is not Coptic, it's Middle Egyptian. Resources are in the FAQ
4. Demotic is a language in and of itself, not just a script. I'm fairly sure there's a resource in my FAQ somewhere on it, but I wouldn't tackle it until you know at least Middle and Late Egyptian. Hieratic? Well there's Moeller's Hieratische Palaographie in 5 volumes, but it does require you to read both German and Middle Egyptian because it looks like this:
Tumblr media
Genuinely wouldn't suggest looking at any Hieratic or Demotic until you've at least got a few years of Middle Egyptian under your belt because it's not easy. I, personally, didn't do Hieratic until my MA so I had 3-4 years of Middle Egyptian, 3 years of Late Egyptian, 1 of Coptic, and 1 of Old Egyptian, before we even attempted it. There's a big difference between Hieroglyphs (Old, Middle, Late) and this:

Charmed, I'm Sure
Chapter 17
Summary: No human has ever avoided Asmodeus's charm. Except for you.
Pairing: Asmodeus x GN Reader/MC
Genre: Drama, angst, a little fluff.
Warnings: None.
***
Author's Note: Mermaid Splash and Heart Shaped Wreckage had such a chokehold on me for a hot minute so I'm sorry this update has been a longtime coming. That being said, I cut this chapter down to one scene to match the length of earlier chapters. Stay tuned for an update coming soon :)
***
After about three days you felt well enough to attend classes again but both Lucifer and Diavolio denied your return. You were to stay home and rest for at least a week.
Mammon begged Lucifer to let him be the one to stay home with you, so he’d been given a half-day trial. But when Lucifer came home at lunchtime to check on you, he caught Mammon trying to sneak away to the casino when you had fallen asleep.
Mammon was punished by having to groom Cerberus without the assistance of magic, and Levi was assigned to look after you from then on. It made the most sense for Levi to be the one to watch you, he did most of his classes for RAD online anyway.
You spent most of your days switching between your room and Levi’s, doing school assignments with ample breaks in between. Levi was quite helpful when it came to Devildom History, he knew a lot about all the different battles that had been fought in the past millennia, rattling off facts off the top of his head. For your other classes, both Satan and Lucifer left you thorough notes to study, and they marked important passages in your textbooks as well. You were sure your grades would take a dip once you returned to class without the brothers’ comprehensive assistance.
Every day after RAD was over, Levi had his student council meetings which he attended over video call. Usually you would listen in, with Diavolo's permission, but today you had guests.
“MC!” Luke cried. He hugged you tightly, practically sitting on your lap.
You’d needed a change of scenery so when the angels had texted you they were coming to visit, you moved to the common room.
“Now Luke, don’t crowd them.” Simeon said sternly. “Sorry about that, MC.”
“It’s fine, really,” you hugged Luke back and then made room for him to sit next to you on the couch.
“We brought you some homemade sweets,” said Luke. “Make sure you hide them so Beelzebub doesn’t get to them.”
“There’s another box in the kitchen for everyone else, he’ll get his share.” Simeon assured you.
You opened the box. Inside were petit fours, some cookies, and some mini cream puffs, all of it was neatly separated with dividers. “These look delicious!” Simeon handed you a smaller box which contained a small strawberry shortcake, the perfect size to serve four. “It would be a shame if I had to eat them all myself so why don't we share them together? I can make some tea.”
Simeon was already moving to stand. “Stay right there, I can make the tea.”
Luke brought you a serving platter and some plates and utensils from the kitchen. You got to work setting everything out and making up plates for your guests while Simeon prepared some Earl Grey tea. He brought it in on a tray with a little pitcher of milk, sugar, and a bowl of lemon slices.
“Now how do you like your tea, MC?” Simeon asked as he poured some into a cup for you.
“MC likes honey in their tea, isn't that right?” Luke said.
“Oh, I didn't think to bring any honey,” said Simeon. “Shall I go get some?”
“I'll stick with a splash of milk for today,” You answered.
The three of you talked about RAD. You were happy to learn that Luke hadn’t had as much trouble with bullies ever since he became friends with Beel. Beel seemed to look after the little angel as if he was his own brother. That was a wonderful development for the exchange program. Simeon noted that the brothers seemed to miss you in class and at lunch, although they hadn't said anything about it, he could just tell.
Soon the conversation turned to you and your health.
“You’re getting enough rest, right?” Simeon asked.
“Eight whole hours of sleep every night,” you assured him.
“Good. I did notice your complexion looks better.”
You touched your cheek. “Thank you,” You weren’t sure if the extra sleep had anything to do with your skin improving, but you hadn’t done anything different with your skincare routine. Maybe it was the reduced stress from not having to attend classes. Whatever it was, you were pleased with the results and hoped it would continue.
Luke pulled out what looked like an ordinary friendship bracelet. “I made you this,” It had a red braided string with blue and white beads. Upon closer inspection, however, it seemed to glow slightly. “It has a protection spell woven into it. Solomon taught me. It's not very strong but it should be able to ward off any lower level demons who wish to harm you.”
“Thank you, Luke,” you smiled. “But you know it wasn't lower level demons who did this to me, I accidentally poisoned myself.” You recited the “official” story Lucifer had given you to say. It felt weird lying to the angels but the fewer people who knew the truth, the better. Besides, it might worry them more if they found out you’d been acting recklessly, even if you had done it under the supervision and encouragement of multiple competent magic users, their roommate included.
“I know but there are shady demons everywhere, it’s best to be cautious.”
“I suppose that's true.” You thought back to your first day at RAD. You touched the bracelet. You felt the faint buzz of what you now knew was magic. You’d been in the Devildom long enough now to be able to detect it, even if you couldn't wield it yourself.
“It won’t work on the brothers, so don’t worry about that,” said Simeon.
“Only because they're too powerful.” Luke grumbled.
“And because they don’t wish to harm you.” Simeon smiled. “You're safe here.”
Luke looked skeptical. It hadn't been that long since the two of you were faced with Lucifer’s unbridled wrath. And back then he had very much intended to harm you, Luke, and his own brother.
“Well thank you very much for this.” You hugged the young angel again. “Would you mind helping me put it on?”
Luke tied it to your ankle, with Simeon assisting him with the knot. There was a tiny flash sealing the spell.
“Don't ever take it off, ok?” Luke was starting to explain how the spell worked when Levi returned to the common room looking pale.
“Levi, is something wrong?” You asked, looking up at him.
He slumped onto the couch next to you.
“Do you need something, Levi?” Simeon poured a cup of tea for him. “Here, drink this.” He handed over the cup and saucer.
Luke put a cookie on a plate and reached over you to place it in Levi's lap.
“Levi?” You said again.
“The student council took a vote,” he said finally. “Almost unanimous. If Belphie were here he’d have been on my side, we could have contested it. Sometimes it's good to have two shut-in characters…”
“Ok…”
“Seven to one…”
“You’re not explaining anything,” You laid a hand on his shoulder, you were starting to get worried. “What was the vote about?”
Levi took a sip of his tea, grimacing at the taste before reaching for a lemon slice. “RAD is taking a field trip to the Moryo Town hot springs in two weeks.”
“Is that all?” You said. “I thought it was going to be something bad.”
“That is something bad!” Levi took another sip of tea, running a hand through his hair. “A whole weekend around other people, wearing yukata… And since I’m part of the student council I can’t just stay home sick. Lucifer would never allow that.”
“I thought you liked water, Leviathan,” said Simeon.
“Cool water. Empty water. Preferably salt water. Water with little fish like Henry swimming around in it, even. Not water filled with normies.” He held his face in his hands.
Luke rolled his eyes.
“I'm going to miss so many raids and merch drops.” Levi actually whimpered.
You patted his shoulder.
“Well,” you said. “Since the water will probably be too hot for humans, if you bring your laptop I can keep an eye on them for you.”
“That’s a good compromise,” said Simeon. “Although it’s a shame you won’t be able to participate, MC.”
Angels and Demons had similarly durable bodies. They would be able to stand the heat from the hot springs, unlike you and RAD’s one other human exchange student. It was likely you and Solomon would be sticking together during the trip. Hopefully there would be enough to do in town to occupy you.
“See, that’s the problem,” Levi said, taking another sip of tea. “The whole reason we’re going is because of you.”
“I don’t follow.” You cocked your head.
“The human-safe baths Lord Diavolo commissioned when the exchange program was announced were finished ahead of schedule. According to him, we can finally ‘enjoy a shared interest between humans and demons.’” Levi’s impression of the Demon Prince was impressive. “This is a nightmare.” He collapsed against the couch cushions dramatically.

Hi! How did you learn to read Japanese? If I'm not wrong that you do, is the Japanese depiction of the GW characters' personalities different from their Western depictions?
Hey! Learning how to read Japanese is definitely an adventure in and of itself. For me, I had learned how to read and write hiragana and katakana from the Yoshida Institute’s site long before smartphones existed, along with a few kanji. I would use hiragana for my cheat sheets at school. (Yes, I learned a whole different alphabet just to cheat at history and geography instead of simply studying for my exams like a sensible person, even though I realized it was way more effort. I'm not exactly smart.) I started learning kanji properly years later with the kanji learning app Japanese Kanji Study, which I can't recommend enough, then took a brief language course and then accidentally ended up studying Japanese in college for 1.5 years, which is where I learned all my beginner's grammar (みんなの日本語 anyone?) and, as is totally apt for a beginner, hentaigana.
It’s funny when you can't string five sentences together without issue, but can make out Nobunaga's scribbling, something many natives are incapable of. Great, balanced education you thought up there, folks.
At least I got a laugh out of one Ranma ½ episode where Ranma found Kuno’s journal entry and couldn’t read it because of course that doofus would write it in the most archaic manner possible.
Anyway, as far as reading aids go, I’m just gonna plug everything I’ve used over the years for anyone interested. The Firefox extension 10ten reader has been a lifesaver, as has been Jisho. When it comes to comprehension, Google translate is dog crap. I’d recommend Papago, which must have been trained specifically on East Asian languages as the results are much better. Not perfect, but better in my experience. Google translate has long incorporated OCR (image to text) so it may be less useful, but I’m very fond of the no-install Capture2Text which can convert manga speech bubbles to text, provided the scans are clean enough to read the kanji.
For grammar, I stuck to Minna No Nihongo. Bought all the books and slowly work through the lessons now.
The most valuable asset though is having a fluent or native speaker you can ask. Nuance is impossible to grasp if no one explains it to you. Even with vocab, you’ll run into plenty of words with the same meaning. Dictionaries often don’t distinguish in those cases. Having someone you can ask makes learning a lot easier.
Now for the Gundam Wing part of your question.
I’m not exactly sure what you mean by Japanese and Western depictions, or rather who you mean. If we’re talking official sub vs. dub then yes, there are a few differences. Heero isn’t perpetually constipated in the original (he actually has a sense of humor!) and Duo is a lot less flirty than his dub version. But it’s nothing grave. Certainly not Seto Kaiba levels of the dub rewriting his character to make him rant about not believing in destiny every time he opens his mouth.
Or Saber Rider being the leader of the Star Sheriffs. wtf I grew up with a lie D:<
Now, if you’re referring to fandom spaces, I am, without a doubt, the wrongest person to ask as I have never seen what the Japanese Wing fandom is up to and have never really been in touch with what the West is doing either. Have I seen fanfics and do I know 1x2 is the most popular ship? Yes. Have I spent 10 minutes looking at a manga panel, trying to figure out what is going on, only to hit the back button as fast as I could once I did? To the detriment of my poor eyes, yes. But when it comes to fandom differences, I think @muwi-translates could give you a proper answer. I can’t really say much as I’m not involved in the fandom in a way that lets me know such things.
I just sit here in my bubble, talking to myself most of the time.

Time for n00b question #2! (If you remember my first one was about putins like six months ago)
What is, exactly, a half-up half-down hairstyle? Is it like just a bit of the hair styled and the rest left loose? Or is there something else I'm not understanding? And which queens is it associated with?
Thank you for putting up with me being an idiot
Hey! No worries about noob questions - I know it’s cliche but there really are no stupid questions. It's actually more helpful when anyone asks questions that they might feel are simple or basic, because it makes sure that I answer that for you and anyone else who might be wondering + gives me a better frame of reference for what I may need to explain more in the future!
A half-up, half-down style in the most literal sense just means that a section of the hair is styled “up”, either pulled back or in some sort of updo, while the rest of the hair is left “down,” aka usually loose. You also might hear it called a “half updo” - same thing, basic concept of some of the hair is “up” and some is “down.” Same thing. In the most classic sense, it often is referring to a longer hairstyle with the hair most left down with a section on either side of the face pulled back in some way. But, again, it can describe a lot. Here's a good article with some different examples, and here’s another.
As it pertains to Six, specifically: - It describes most Aragon hairstyles, because in most the hair is left loose while sections near the front are pulled back in varying styles (I typically just describe these as a "bob" because I feel like the length is one of the most significant/identifying details that set Aragon wigs apart) - It also describes most Boleyn hairstyles, because most of the hair is down/loose while some is up in the spacebuns (like with Aragon, I usually don't refer to this as half-up either because I find the spacebuns to be the most iconic part of the look even though it is technically half-up) - It describes all but one Seymour style. To me, Seymour styles are also the most quintessential half-up style - the majority of the hair left loose and rather long, with varying forms of the sides/top pulled back. And unlike Aragon and Boleyn, I don't feel like there's any other more definable feature of the typical style (bob/spacebuns respectively), so this is my go-to term for Seymour styles.
Here's a few examples of Aragon, Boleyn, and Seymour styles that fit the half-up half-down label:
Tumblr media
And here are a few A/B/S styles that AREN’T half-up half-down (not comprehensive):
Tumblr media
While a half-up hairstyle isn't standard for Cleves, Howard, or Parr, a few of those queens have had them at different points as well:
Tumblr media
Cleves: Grace Mouat had a few different half-up styles for Cleves, including one that was a teased bouffant style (pictured). Jennifer Caldwell originally wore her hair with the front/top sections pulled back to the sides, more similar to Aragon bobs.
Howard: For a while there were some Howards with a half-up style. It was meant to look like a regular pony, but it generally left the back half of the style loose. It was most commonly used for queens who had shorter hair/too many layers for their hair to be put totally up, back when Six didn't make a ponytail for everyone. There's actually been six queens with this style, which I talked about here.
Parr: Grace Mouat and Jennifer Caldwell both wore their hair pulled back in a crown, similar to their Cleves styles (part of the time anyway; Jennifer's is pictured here). Gabriela Francesca Carrillo has had a variety of hairstyles as Parr, but her earlier styles often featured some of the hair pulled “up” into braids/ponytails along with some sections hanging “down”/loose (post here). And Taylor Iman Jones has a version of the iconic Parr side pony (the “up”) but has some hair left loose in the back as well. (post here)
-------------- Aragon/Boleyn/Seymour half-up: haileekaleemwright; sixthemusicalau, unsure of origin; arumsoooooul; Joan Marcus; baylie.carson; Michaelah Reynolds; leahvassell; nataliemayparis; ceciliaevelyne Aragon/Boleyn/Seymour not: sixthemusical; courtneyebowman; bridges1993 Cleves/Howard/Parr: gracemouat; unknown, from Wiki; courtneypmack; mallorymaedke; broadwayinchicago; Jennifer Broski

More L x Reader Headcanons: Getting Close
These have been sitting in my drafts for someone who requested, but sadly, I completely went off-track and didn't even answer their request...so I'm posting these here because apparently my reading comprehension is cheeks LOL. Person who requested NSFW L, it's coming I promise!!!
Because this was meant for something else and went into another direction, it's a bit janky and doesn't make sense. Still, was worthless in my drafts for a while...^^
Tumblr media Tumblr media
★ I think he has a low sex drive, however I do NOT think L is sex repulsed. At all. I think he does enjoy sex, he just doesn't feel sexual attraction based on appearance alone. L would begin to form attraction to you as he gets to know you. Being physically beautiful isn't enough, and won't do much for him. He can acknowledge when someone is stereotypically attractive, but he looks inward.
★ I mean...he is literally the equivalent of men who don't have a bedframe. Actually, L IS the dude without a bedframe. He doesn't exactly want a model.
★ L is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to love. He is capable of loving. He does not think you need the stereotypical nuclear family to be happy, and he would never just intentionally seek someone out - but he finds himself getting lonely at times. His attitude is that if it happens, it happens. He knows he's unlikely to find a partner, but he wouldn't fully reject it.
★ Getting close to L isn't easy considering he is often cooped up inside. While the scenario of him falling for an agent helping him with a case is always classic and sweet, I could honestly see him falling for just a regular person.
★ I feel that either way, L would be afraid for you - similar to how super heroes have to be careful for their loved ones being put in danger due to them - L has that fear. He's worried something would happen to you, and it would be his fault. For this reason, I do think L would try to push you away. Hint at Matsuda or Light to sweep you up so he won't have his heart broken.
♡ Anyways...
★ Let's say L is interested in you. There would be teasing and bickering. Late nights staying up together (if you are working with him) and you two gradually grow close over time.
★ He falls for you, for you. Your mind, your soul. I don't think L experiences love often, it's a one-and-done. To get to that point takes much patience and time, so you two must have spent a lot of time together already, picking at eachothers brains and sharing deep thoughts.
★ Ironically, the two of you argue quite a bit, but that strengthens the attraction... somehow.
★ I have a scenario in mind where L is in the midst of pushing you away for your own safety. He knows what he wants, he knows he wants you, but what he wants more is for you to just be safe and not in harm's way.
★ For L you cannot let him do all the work. He would fantasize about holding your hand, and the two of you being happy together as a wholesome couple, but he doesn't want to make the first move unless he knows for sure, like, with verbal confirmation that YOU ARE INTERESTED. He's aware he looks "strange" to most NT people, and he fears coming off as "creepy" to you. He doesn't want to scare you away, as at this point if he caught feelings he already considers you a best friend.
★ He's good at reading people however, and if you wear your heart on your sleeve he will most likely catch on to the fact that you have a thing for him. He notices you put a bit more effort into your appearance, and that you smell extra good. He finds it amusing the way you stutter and laugh nervously to mask your emotions, and he can see right through you.
★ On one hand, he's elated. Who wouldn't be knowing their little crush returns the feelings? On the other, he's scared and wants you to just...go away.
★ He doesn't want the problems that come with a relationship as in, worrying about you, the possibility of losing you and the potential heartbreak that would follow.
★ Without much spoken confirmation the relationship happens...naturally. A bit awkward, but things fall into place...
★ You falling asleep near him, so he places you on the nearest couch and covers you with a blanket.
★ The two of you finding any excuse to touch eachother, you finding any excuse to talk to him even if you have nothing important to say. All the while he's asking you, "What do you think about Light Yagami?" , trying to push you into someone else's arms and guaging how you feel, pleasantly surprised that you're not interested.
★ You probably confess to him after a particularly difficult night. Maybe you're exhausted, exasperated, something bad happened. Perhaps you were out on the 'field', helping him with a case when he told you not to...you worried him the entire time. You argue before kissing him.
★ He's shocked and fires you, but you refuse to leave. It works out.
★ As mentioned before, you can't expect him to do all of the work initially. He is too afraid of making that first step (hurting you, offending you, being 'creepy') and he would rather you did something instead. He is over cautious of boundaries as he doesn't want to take any chances fucking things up.
★ With time, he will initiate getting close to you. He trusts that you would talk to him if you at all felt uneasy by his actions - communication is necessary with him!

Heya Baba! <3 I remember you mentioned Lark and Grant recently and I would love to know more!! So Lark/Grant for the ship bingo :)
😊🌸 Hiya Countless!!! Eheh y'know, I have this awful habit of putting off answering your asks specifically because I want to be especially thorough with them... And consequently not getting to answering them 😅😓. Like, I HAVE NOT forgotten about the music one LOL one day I will answer it I fucking swear!!!
Anyways, oooh, well rad of you to express interest in this one! I'll try my best!
(eheh also fair warning I'm a tad drunk eheheh but hopefully this will still be reasonably comprehensible? Just to say that I might be a bit extra all over the place but I'm trying my best ahaha. Also cheers lol 🍻💜)
Tumblr media
(My second bingo I think? I'm too lazy to mark them lol)
Okay so the thing is, in my head I know exactly how I want this ship to play out and what it means to me... But putting that into words? Quite difficult actually!
I've been like, silently obsessing over these two for the past few months actually. I did this to myself? It was an accident?? I have this non-magical AU road trip fic for them that I've been rotating around for the longest time and have been *dying* to write, so I guess that's what a lot of my thoughts have centered around! That said, if I could explain the appeal more generally...
*Well*, as far as ships I feel strongly positive about go, this one is... Definitely one of the most unapologetically toxic ones tbh? Not as the end game for them! Rather, usually when these two play out in my head it sorta starts as two people with a lot of conflict between them (perhaps cause they're so similar in a lot of ways), who ultimately come to understand each other very well and grow as a result. Does that make sense? I think they make each other worse, and *then* they make each other better.
So what is it about them? Well... It's a bit hard to place actually! I would say that near its core, their relationship to me is very much defined by its physicality. Which I guess I mean from a number of angles (eheh including the sexual side sure but I'll spare you that dw I'll spare you from that LOL). For one there's... Something very physical about both of their most core traumas (the pyramid, the chimera) that to me separates these two from the rest of the other kid(dad)s? Similarly, and perhaps related to this, they certainly have a relationship with physical violence that is unlike the others as well, wherein it tends to be more of a pleasure or source of catharsis rather than purely being a necessary evil. Obviously in Grant's case this takes on a particularly dark tone, but still I think Lark's violent disposition is apparent and important enough.
I'll go back to all of that shortly but as a side tangent, they both have similar (albeit not identical) habits of shutting down and pushing people away as well? There's a lot of self-loathing, a lot of not believing oneself to be worthy of love, and so on and so forth.
SOOOOOO... I think at first they could be very cold and mean with each other! (Cue that scene in The Staircase when Lark body checks Grant to push past hm like ouch ooo my feelings but also *go on*). Verbal communication only goes so far with either of them, seeing oneself in the other and projecting that self-loathing onto them in the form of hate... It's a recipe for disaster tbh.
So... They fight! Especially like, physically, they fight. And... It's great? For both of them. It's an outlet, it's cathartic, and when it's just the two of them like this they can be shameless about it! <- That last part is important, for both of them but especially for Grant I think.
>> Now playing: "A Kiss With a Fist" by Florence and the Machine >>
And I think with time they learn to be more open with one another in other ways? As I mentioned earlier, their traumas bear a lot of similarities, among other things, so I think that once they reach this point there's this level of understanding between them that they haven't really been able to find elsewhere, and in that, probably some comfort. And trust!!!
So they're not really a couple sorta deal for me even if some of the feelings present might ultimately be romantic? It's more like, they let off some steam, they kiss a bit (or a bit more than a bit), and they love each other in a way that is deep and personal but doesn't require any sort of label, cause words were never what defined them in the first place.
Does any of this make sense??? Did I mention I'm drunk???
Not that this is exactly how it needs to be play out in every iteration of them, either. I guess there's also a lot of hurt/comfort for me with these two. A lot of that has to do with my own headcanons of Lark having PTSD and related symptoms that are quite similar to what Grant goes through, and the mutual understanding that comes with that (in short). And hey, for all the cuts and bruises from their training sessions (and/or consensual roughhousing), there's just as many carefully applied bandages and ice packs afterwards eheheh.
AHA okay this was long oh my goodness. And I still don't feel like I really got what I mean across!
🤔 Honestly, if this explanation turned you *off* from the ship more than anything, that's pretty fair tbh! They're really difficult for me to put into words haha, maybe in fanfiction it would be less off-putting!
Regardless, thank you very much for the ask :3 💜

Hollow, Ghost
7, 12, 13
Hope you don't mind that there are many of these :>
Ok so I did #12 and #13 for Hollow in another answer recently so be sure to check out the "#Hollow Knight Asks" tag for my page! I'll do #7 for Hollow here since I've not done that one for them yet and then the rest for Ghost!
7. the moment of theirs that made me the happiest
- Hollow: it's a tie between them walking out of the temple in Embrace the Void and them going batshit on Radiance in Dream No More. They get so little screentime in game so the absolute bad bitch energy of "I win and there's nothing you can do about it" in both of these endings made me go feral and I (accidentally) slammed my Xbox controller down during their two seconds of (half) onscreen time in ETV and the poor controller still makes a rattling sound to this day lol. The fact they gave us a canon ending where Hollow lives and actually staggers out. Yes I know DNM is more popular but ETV is the cope I needed mentally for the "you thought you'd seen the last of me! Surprise! I survived through all this shit and will live while the gods responsible roll around in their graves" and will gladly grab and run with it like the feral little rat that I am
-Ghost: shade lord Super Saiyan transformation complete with happy meal snacking Radiance and then Godseeker as desert because she talked so much shit. Something about the entire ETV ending timeline where Ghost looks at the other solutions and says "nah" and goes through so much so they get to smack the Radiance around like a squeaky dog toy is my favorite thing for them. I literally yelled "YES GET HER ASS! YOU TELL HER!" when they go for Radiance and then I just dissolved into ungraceful incoherency when they snatch Godseeker up like the last Pringle chip in the can. Ghost got what Ghost deserved lol
12. what I like about the way the fandom portrays them
Ghost- I like the specific flavor of fandom Ghost where they're this absolute force of (controlled) chaos. A bundle of fully-capable-of-mass-destruction God wrapped neatly in this tiny potato form and they are quiet and observant, giving little ability to read them as they observe the world. An enigma. They give off this older-than-time-and-knowing-beyond-comprehension feel and yet at any moment they want to they're going to whip out the nail and smash some shit to see what it does or buy an overpriced new lantern or charm they don't need because it's sparkly and looks cool. I love the carefully calculated balance between "This is an ancient force capable of swallowing gods and unleashing hell upon the unfortunate and it's face and body language gives nothing away" and "this is a shiny button that says Do Not Press and I'm going to press it anyway because I can and ooooo is that a rotten egg? I need it right now"
13. what I don't like about how the fandom portrays them
Ghost- ehhh probably when people make them TOO overly emotional and openly expressive. So little is elaborated about their backstory that there's nothing that really bothers me too bad, though I like when they have a careful balance of some childlike wonder in the world, mixed with this muted sense of an ageless otherworldly creature with a quiet way of doing things. Ghost is kinda an enigma in that we don't really know WHY they are the way that they are. They seemingly hatched with Hollow and are a clutchmate so they're definitely not a "baby" in that sense, but physically Hollow matured into adult form whereas Ghost apparently didn't. Is it because they needed something external to promote growth into an adult molt that they were deprived of? Are they even Hollow's past hatchmate or just the Shade god of the abyss condensing itself into a form tied to the Hollow Knight's greatest regrets to allow it to move more freely? Either way they clearly have a will and certain desires, but it's muted in such a way that just really seems to fit with their mysterious persona and when people make them too openly clingy and visibly expressive in their motivations it kinda turns me off. "What are they doing and why?" As they do things with little elaboration and explanation fits better for them imo

okay so a whole of 5 people (and then myself so i could see the results) have answered yes to the poll SO. we'll start with the strange ones and work our way backward
(p.s. it feels important to preface this by saying first of all it's 3 in the morning and i've been working on this post for the better part of an hour and have gotten sidetracked several times during it so i'm not sure this is at all sensical to anyone but me lol . i MIGHT try and clean it up a little and make it a little more comprehensible at some point, but i make no promises.
second of all this very much so blurs the lines of just straight factual canon BUT i think most of it is reasonable to assume in turn with real canon. but also please keep in mind im working on a reboot of the trilogy and may have gotten some of THAT canon mixed up in there so please take this with a grain of salt lol.)
my little reason why ; lisa hannigan (steven universe)
dimitri about the cooper gang i think. admittedly this one is mostly just about vibes and the last lines* but it makes me Emotion so you get it anyway. i can also see this as the panda king just less so
*"My little reason why / You make me want to try / Loving you"
rambling in-depth breakdown/analysis below the cut ! for being a spur of the moment association bc i thought about dimitri with this stuck in my head, it works surprisingly well <3
er. to me anyway.
so im gonna talk about this like it was written for this intended purpose and like it's all just a big metaphor even though it most certainly was not lol
"Cold palace walls / And endless empty halls / Haunted by echoes of laughter"
metaphorically about the klaww gang. like they were a TEAM sure but i doubt they really liked each other, y'know? i cant imagine bison and the contessa putting up w dimitri any more than they have to.
i take the "haunted by echoes of laughter" in part as dimitri being like the outcast of the Klaww Gang so the others are laughing but dimitri himself is not, hence the haunting and the echoes. but that's not CANON canon so like who's to say. but i think it's not a far fetch all things considered. but the halls could very well be haunted by echoes of laughter post-klaww bust where they've been disbanded if that's more your jive!
"You gave the pull / And suddenly they're full / You've thrown the gates open after you"
continuing with the Palace is a Metaphor For Teams thing im doing presumably the "you" is sly & the rest of the cg! the halls are full and the gates are open because they actually like care about each other and don't view each other as means to an end. i point out sly specifically bc he's. well. the leader of the team (or at least who you would assume as the leader at a first glance but that's a ramble for another day) and also bc he's the one who talks to dimitri first.
and probably the first one to like befriend him but that's blurring out of factual canon. but if you want to continue blurring those lines then "throwing the gates open" could be read as like. if sly's the first one to get comfortable with him presumably that's going to encourage the others to as well so it goes from work acquaintances -> work acquaintances and sly -> friends/found family
"And swept in with the throng / Comes this wonderful song"
okay this part i dont have much for i was honestly just gonna put it with the last part or the next part lol BUT it could be framed as dimitri's redemption* arc of sorts . like i said i have the least abot this and is there a mouse above me hold on
(it was not. leaving that though 'cause it's funny.)
anyway. like i said i have not a lot about this part and less that's actually fit into just straight canon but like consider it as dimitri swept into the throng and the wonderful song being. well in a literal sense the next few lines. but also in a less concrete way metaphorical heart singing about finally fitting in in a team that doesn't suck ass you know. like i said not very solid. but it makes me Feel Things so.
"My little reason why / I'll never make you cry / Oh, I have got the sweetest things to tell you every day"
again more about his redemption* arc. something about not making them cry anymore bc he's not a sucky dude anymore. my gay found family heart says it's about the found familyness .
also the "sweetest things to tell" is just him getting comfortable enough with the crew to infodump about boats /j
in a more serious sense (though not by much) i cannot imagine a world in which he does not talk a very much. so i am sure he does certainly say a lot of sweet things every day . and again i can't imagine the klaww gang putting up with him beyond the necessities so i imagine he says a lot more sweet things to the cg than he did to them but as is to be expected with me that is Blurring the Lines still so .
"My little reason why / You make me want to try / Loving you"
again with the redemption* arc . still blurring my lines here but i'm sure if the klaww gang weren't fond of each other than dimitri is definitely not going into the cg with high hopes . but as he bonds with them he learns that they don't suck actually. so he's coming out of his metaphorical shell (sorry bentley) as he learns that the cooper gang is not just a team or "cold palace walls and endless empty halls" but they're like actually friends/family. so he can try to (platonically, in case you couldn't tell)** love them.
*redemption played fast and loose here bc he is still definitely part of a team of master thieves and therefore still on the unredeemed side of the law but redeemed as in working with sly/the protagonists, ya dig? of course ya dig.
**no offense to everybody who ships him with people in the cg thi just personally reads found family to me and i just want to make that clear lol .

A Treatise on why Label Policing is Bad
Alternatively named: I do have reading comprehension, you're just a goddamn adult who somehow doesn't know that people can disagree with you for fully thought out and informed reasons and not be a bad person.
I'm kinda tired and don't wanna get riled up because I have work early tomorrow morning but I don't wanna forget to make this post so I'm just gonna jump right into it. I got in a dispute, here's the context for the post in pictures:
(Under the cut because I know this is going to be a long one, but please read if you have the spoons because I think it's important)
The original post:
Tumblr media
The self-reblog from OP continuing the rant:
Tumblr media
And my response:
Tumblr media
You could argue I was asking for OP to get mad at me and write a big post then block me. You would probably be right, but I thought it was important. This IS where radical feminism starts, and I thought it was important to point that out and warn people against it. Also if you've been with me for a while, you know that label anarchy is my whole schtick. I do not stand for label policing, it's just simply one of the worst offenses in my world.
Anyways they answered back. I'm going to go through their answer point by point because they (and some of their followers who anon'ed me) really thought they got me good and disproved all my points. And I still think this is an important subject, so I will gladly take the chance to elaborate my points.
Tumblr media
Nope, next question. No, but in all seriousness, there is a huge difference in being frustrated about how people are perceiving a label that you're using versus trying to define that label for everyone else who uses it.
Newsflash: people can use labels in different ways! Label fluidity 101 example is bi vs pan. People use these labels for different reasons and there is so much overlap that there can't really be a solid difference between the two that encompasses all the reasons someone might choose one over the other. Hell, maybe they just like the flag better.
You don't have to be a label anarchist like me to concede that point (although I do highly recommend, being a label anarchist is a blast) and if you understand that, then there's really not that much of a jump to understand why someone might want to microlabel (e.g. bi lesbian) or why someone who might more accurately be described as bi might want to use lesbian as a descriptor instead.
Part of being queer is finding joy in identity. Would you really deny someone else that right?
Tumblr media
Gonna be real with you, I don't do background checks when I'm reblogging. I did a cursory glance of your blog just because I was doing a long response and wanted to be sure you weren't actually just a terf. Sue me.
Tumblr media
Couple points here. One, words are made up, and the definitions of them are constantly evolving. I'm a writer so I'm absolutely more obnoxious about this than other people, but if you want to change the definition of a word, literally all you have to do is use it in that way enough, and people will understand what you're saying. Especially with identity words.
Two, who is "we"? Lesbians in general? We are not a monolith. I am one, and I don't agree that it's a hard boundary. I do agree that in the general sense of the word, used in it's truest form, it excludes men. That doesn't mean it's always used that way, for the aforementioned reasons.
Three, jesus christ I can't believe you're doing the one where you imply that me saying words are made up is what makes men rape women. Biphobia was created on that fallacy.
Tumblr media
See above: bi and pan example. Bi lesbian and bi can be functionally the same label, but for some people, the former is just a more comfortable descriptor.
Tumblr media
Nah, I advocate for both microlabeling and macrolabeling because literally none of it matters or hurts anyone. People should get to identify however they feel suits them best. That's part of the joy of being queer.
Also, as I mentioned, I'm a writer and I LOVE playing with words. I'm also a philosophy nerd which might explain why I'm so fucking cerebral about it all. Not everyone has to be like me in regards to how they view labels, I understand that I am absolutely the extreme, but everyone should be allowed to because, I repeat, NOBODY IS BEING HURT BY IT.
Tumblr media
I ignored that part of the post because I am not a men's rights activist. I thought Barbie 2023 was too nice to the Kens in the end. I'm a misandrist (ok that's mostly a joke). That part wasn't for me.
Tumblr media
Heh, just plain wrong. My college, which I have attended for the past three years and where I am currently in my last year, has an over 70% queer population. Not gonna dox myself, but it's well known for being one of the queerest schools in the US. I am constantly talking to Real Actual Queer People face to face. Also I'm mostly on tumblr for the fandoms. This is just my queer sideblog.
Tumblr media
I'm an English major, bro. Reading comprehension is kinda my job. And that's a lazy gotcha by the way, that's just the easiest way to discount someone who you disagree with on the internet. Be more creative.
Also DNIs are kind of a hazy concept tbh. The DNI was listed on your pinned post, not the post which I reblogged. In hindsight, you may have put it in the tags of the original post, as all I saw was a reblog, but you have to understand that the internet as a whole is kind of moving away from DNIs because they're so nebulous and weird and hard to follow. Also I thought your post was problematic so I wanted to say it. The morality there is kinda shaky, I'll admit. There, one point for you. I don't regret it.
Tumblr media
Something tells me you don't actually wish me the best...
+ bonus the tags
Tumblr media
Don't have time? This is a pretty long post. Though to be fair I don't have the time either, it is way too late for me to be up responding to this, so I'll give you benefit of the doubt.
I am a full time student and work two campus jobs, plus have rehearsals and clubs most nights. I do admit to spending a lot of time scrolling on tumblr, but at least I'm not embarrassed by it like you seem to be.
You are four years older than me, not ten. You're not even 30 yet. Chill, ok? And maybe don't go around throwing the kys word when talking to someone you disagree with on the internet, someone might take it the wrong way.
For some reason I don't think you were laughing typing up this reply...
Anyway, that's it. I spent way too much brain energy on this, but it was important, so if you made it this far, thanks for putting up with my rambly ways. If you saw a typo, no you didn't. I'm tired.

25.  UMBRELLA :  for one muse to share their umbrella with the other on a rainy day!
a comprehensive list of scenarios | 25.  UMBRELLA :  for one muse to share their umbrella with the other on a rainy day.
Winter rain was the worst.
It stung, it froze, it somehow chilled the air around your face so when you breathed it in it was like inhaling aerated slushies up your nose and...yeah, it was pretty miserable.
Wang Yi stood at the trolley station with his hands in his pockets, looking at the raindrops as they drip-dropped in muted misery, and wondered how long he'd have to wait.
Ding!
A message on his phone. He reluctantly dug a hand out of its glove to read it.
Due to emergency road work around the Water of Styx, there will be detours on the Spirale-Line routes 1 and 3. The following trolley stops will be missed until further notice...
Oh look, his station's on the list. Fantastic. He checks the train schedule instead and nope, not gonna make it to the next one on foot. A taxi isn't worth the price and he doesn't have his own wheels, so it'd make more sense to walk. He would've done that in the first place if it wasn't, you know, raining freezing death and he had a bag of library books to carry home.
Sigh...time to suck it up.
Not long after he started trodding through the downpour, the hems of his pants are wet. His shoes are soaked through too, leaving him with cold feet. The library books are fine because he shielded them under his jacket, but that meant his head was exposed to the elements. Sometimes it sucked to live in Archimedes, where the roads wound back and forth like silly string and a distinct lack of malls meant no convenient storefronts to duck in from the weather. Sure it was picturesque, but who took selfies in the rain anyways?
'Achoo!' Damn but it was cold. He better not get sick again—
"Wang Yi!"
He looked up at the voice, peering through soppy bangs at a faint figure across the street.
'...Zhilan?'
Tumblr media
'What are you doing out here?'
Instead of answering, the scholar started running towards him with a huge umbrella over his head. But the rain tripped him up a few feet away, causing him to slip.
"Ah—!"
'Got you!' Wang Yi caught him around the torso just in time, half spinning in the rain before they come to a stop. The umbrella in Zhilan's hands bopped against his head a few times before shakily steadying above them both.
"T-thank you." A bit flustered, the scholar wiped his glasses to give Wang Yi a closer look. "It really is you!"
'How come you're in Archimedes?' Wang Yi asked back. 'Isn't your apartment in Golden?'
"Ah, I wanted to stock up on Jueyan chilis from Star Trail. It's a hometown delicacy of mine," Zhilan began, but quickly adopted a serious expression again. "But Wang Yi, why are you walking in the rain? Did you forget about the last time you got sick?"
'Er, the trolley got cancelled so I thought I'd make it home on foot.'
"It's freezing out!" Zhilan scolded. His grip on the umbrella tightened as he shook it above their heads. "Here, share this with me. You're already completely soaked."
'But don't you have to get home yourself?' Wang Yi asked as he meekly shuffled under cover. 'I won't take long, I'm only about three blocks away.'
"That's not an excuse," the other tsk'd before noticing the bundle on his back. "What are you carrying?"
'Oh uh, library books.'
"I see, for your research again?"
'...yeah, you're right.'
"Then it's all the more important that you keep up your health," Zhilan went on matter-of-factly. "Back at the Akademiya, there were scholars who pushed themselves too hard in the pursuit of knowledge. Although their passion was commendable, it's fooldhardy to neglect one's body. I once witnessed a student who refused to sleep for a week and suffered debilitating migraines in consequence..."
Slowly they began to set off, Wang Yi nodding humbly to each and every example from Zhilan's past. When the scholar got worked up enough to start gesturing with his hands, he quietly took over the job of holding the umbrella above their heads.
The handle was still warm from where his companion held it last, soothing his icy fingers.
'...Zhilan,' Wang Yi tried after a lull in the conversation.
"Yes?"
'What do Jueyan chilis taste like?'
"That's right, I haven't told you about them!" Zhilan reached into his bag and plucked out one of the round, red vegetables, his eyes shining with excitement. "But I must warn you, they're quite spicy. Actually, I've meant to ask if there might be something akin to them in your own world, considering the geographical similarities you mentioned last time. Perhaps you could find its equivalent in the Star Trail as well! It would be fascinating if we were to compare their properties and..."
And on and on he went, cheeks turning a dusty pink that complemented the scarlet pepper in his palm. When they finally reached his condo, Wang Yi had to cough, then nudge Zhilan's shoulder, to catch his attention.
'We're here.'
"We are?" Zhilan looked around in surprise, then flushed slightly. "My apologies, I didn't mean to ramble on..."
'It's fine,' Wang Yi replied, then coughed again. 'Do you want to stay for dinner?'
"Oh no, I don't want to impose." Immediately Zhilan raised his hands to wave off the generous offer. "You still need to dry off, and to make you cook on top of that would be too much—"
'Because I'm pretty sure I have a recipe that'll work with Jueyan chilis, but I'd need an expert to tell me how it tastes,' Wang Yi went on as he led the way to the front door and took out his key. 'I'll pay you for them, I mean.'
"You don't have to do that, either!" the scholar protested. "It's getting late. I should leave you to your privacy!"
'So I can leave you to get hypothermia?' Wang Yi's gaze drifted down to Zhilan's legs. 'You're not even wearing rain boots. Your shoes are completely soaked through—at least wait for them to dry before heading home.'
"Ah...you're right..."
'I also still have your umbrella,' Wang Yi pointed out, neatly tucking it out of reach before Zhilan could reach to take it back. 'Come in and I'll start us off with a hot drink. Shouldn't you look after yourself too?'
There was a sheepish chuckle back. "I suppose it wouldn't be very convincing if I keep refusing your offer...and it'd be a poor example besides if I didn't follow my own advice."
'Right. So first off, coffee or tea?'
The door closed behind them, shutting out a bitter night.
Inside, all was warmth.

Which classic lit adaptations capture what you specifically enjoy about the original books?
This is a hard question. I know what my favourite adaptations are but saying what they capture is a little harder.
My favourite classic lit adaptation of all time, bar none, is A Muppet's Christmas Carol. But you have to find the original version where The Love Is Gone song is maintained (my poor VHS eventually died) I'm not sure what that says about me, but I watch it every Christmas Eve. I feel like it really captures the pathos you are supposed to feel for the Cratchit family and Scrooge has a very believable redemption arc. It also does this wonderful job of showing how Scrooge has been missing out on joy. But that book is not one of my favourites... (I think I’ve read it once)
I actually think the more I love the original work, the less I like the adaptations. Because it is so hard for a movie to capture the whole story and it’s hard even for a mini to show every facet of the characters. I love Mansfield Park and I think a lot about the characters, so I wonder if any adaptation could sufficiently capture them in a way that would satisfy me!
Which is not to say that I don’t appreciate Classic Lit adaptations, I do! I really love some of them. Pride & Prejudice 2005 is what brought me to Jane Austen. But I also think they create misconceptions of the characters because inevitably a character gets flattened when you move from text to the screen. There is just so much richness in these amazing books, which is why they are so popular today, that doesn’t translate to film.
A Christmas Carol might work so well in adaptations because it’s short, it has a strong moral message, the characters aren’t terribly complex, and the message is still relevant today. But how to translate Mansfield Park, with it’s largely silent heroine, or The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which explores a very destructive but not very visual form of spousal abuse, those are tricky! And I think it’s very hard to turn these longer books into a comprehensive movie, though it has been done well.
Jane Austen’s text are also tricky because part of what I love is the narrator ripping her own characters to shreds and making super sassy and sarcastic comments and that just doesn’t translate to screen at all. But I also love the strength of her female characters against a society that expects them to do impossible things, like choose to love but also marry with a competency. And I think the movies have trouble explaining how tricky it is for women to walk that line between prudence and avarice.
Anyway, this question is hard because I have a difficult time saying what exactly I specifically enjoy about my favourite classic literatures.... Like I just read Wives & Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell and I LOVED IT. But I don’t think I actually can tell you what exactly I liked, I just wanted to keep being with Molly and living in that novel. I don’t know why I love Jane Austen so much, I just do.
So I think I tend to like bits of things, like how Northanger Abbey 2007 really got Henry Tilney and John Thorpe spot on, but there were other things I think fell short especially within the time constraints. And Emma 2020 and Clueless I really love how they do Emma, even if the story isn’t perfect there either. And Sense & Sensibility 1995 really did a perfect Willoughby for me, even if other elements bother me, like Elinor being far too old.
I hope that was kind of an answer.

Questions abt the last day of the event because I have no reading comprehension.
Tumblr media
What is the "truth" Alhaitham is referring to here? Granted, he's quoting something, but I digress. The true defense against nihilism? Is little decisions being the defense against nihilism the "ignorance that blinds them?" Or is the ignorance the idea that the idealist can bring happiness to all?
I could probably find the answer to this question if I did a better analysis on Kaveh. Honestly I still don't understand his mentality. I don't really get how his idealism relates to his lack of self-worth. I don't get why his idealism is a defense against coming to terms with the truth. Actually, I'm not even really sure what his "truth" is and why he doesn't want to face it. I can come up with a one-size-fits-all answer, but nothing more personalized to Kaveh's situation.
Going off of what I've seen in real life, the ignorance that blinds empaths is the belief that they can make everyone happy. But why? Hmm... Is it perhaps that they believe making others happy will bring them happiness? And to admit this isn't the case means that they have to become selfish to pursue their happiness?
But if this is the case, how would it relate to the concept of nihilism in this event, i.e. that at humanity's core, it is darkness and will continue to perpetuate darkness into infinity? I'm guessing Sachin held onto his ideals that humanity at its core was good, but continuous observations and failed experiments proved him wrong. The truth to him was that humanity could not be saved nor save itself. But how is that supposed to relate to Kaveh?
Unless it's not supposed to relate to Kaveh? Sachin assumed they were similar, but Kaveh's idealism stems from a different place than Sachin's? Aka Sachin chose wrong? Speaking of which, I never really thought of Kaveh as an empath. Bc tbh through this whole event I suppose there was supposed to be a parallel between Sachin and Kaveh, but I didn't really see one and perhaps that was the point? They're both idealists yet still very different. Their cores are different. None of Kaveh's issues stem from empathy. They seem from guilt.
But that doesn't answer my original question. What does "truth" and "ignorance" refer to? Granted, they made it clear that there is no one truth in the event. People's truths can be different. So then what's the ignorance? This quote seems to be in support of Sachin than pointing out his flaw. He got rid of his ignorance which brought him to his version of the truth. So is this quote supposed to be an argument? A support? Or is it just... an observation? Probably the latter?
I think my issue with this whole thing is that I'm trying to understand this under the assumption that Kaveh parallels Sachin. Which... I really don't think he does in the slightest. And because of this, my base that I was trying to build my understanding upon was flawed from the very start.
Anyway
Tumblr media
Are they actually disagreeing about anything here? I'm guessing Alhaitham is basically saying that history will repeat itself. But Kaveh doesn't necessarily say that it absolutely will not. Kaveh's responses contain no absolutes. And if Kaveh does admit it's a possibility by not using absolutes, why is he rejecting Alhaitham's viewpoint? I'm guessing this is just pitting Kaveh's idealism vs Alhaitham's realism? But what's so wrong about admitting that Alhaitham's right? What does this have to do with standing by his views?
And then it goes back to wiping away ignorance so one can face the truth. I don't get it. I don't get Kaveh. I get how guilt relates to him trying to help people and being unable to accept good will. But what does that have to do with ideals? Actually what even are his ideals exactly? Mentally I keep switching in "optimism" for "idealism" and maybe that's my fault?
Okay let's break it down then. We know from Alhaitham that Kaveh's idealism comes from his inescapable sense of guilt. Guilt over what? Guilt over (what he perceives to be) causing his father's death and ruining his mother's happiness. Because of this, he feels he deserves to be punished. Hmm.... So that means he subconsciously knows that his idealism is the source of his problems. But in admitting this, it would be admitting that he's purposefully idealistic to punish himself. And he doesn't want to admit it because this pain is comforting and numbs his sense of guilt. To admit his idealism is a problem would be the same as yanking his security blanket from his hands and throwing it into a fire.
....
Tbh I think I already knew all of this, even explained it to someone once, but the difference between then and now is that now I can see everything concretely instead of just going off of intuition haha.

TW romantic partner violence
hey. so i've known that this isn't healthy for a long time, but when we're good we're really good. we've been together 10 years, he has been having occasional outbursts for 8-9. when it started i was quite young and very in love and just rolled with it. then we enmeshed our lives more and im now in a very grey area where i would destroy his life if i kicked him out.
he is a trauma survivor, has cptsd and i know that most of his outburst are due to me triggering him. which feels terrible. he doesn't (won't, due to trauma) work, so he has no income source. i support us completely. if i try to leave and kick him out, he will have to either go back to his familial abusers or be homeless. i cannot justify this.
i'm considering officially breaking up, to some extent, and moving into my office, at least most of the time. i think he might accept it, he is very unhappy and blames me for it. im not sure tho, it could also cause a huge outburst if i suggested it.
anyway, i guess i just wanted to vent and to see if anyone has ideas. i don't want to hurt him more or ruin his life. i just don't want to be treated like this any more.
Hi anon,
I'm so sorry to hear about what you've been going through.
I understand that it's such a hard decision to make. You don't want to be treated this way and carry so much burden, but you also don't want to essentially send your partner back to his abusers. It's definitely a complex situation and the answer isn't easy.
I'd like to show you this ask I answered about what a healthy relationship looks like. You may be able to use this to identify where your relationship stands.
It sounds like communication may be an issue in your relationship, specifically when it comes to communicating triggers. Without a conversation about it, you shouldn't be expected to know what triggers him. You're not a mind reader, you know? So it's not necessarily your fault for triggering him when you don't even really know what those triggers are. It's on your partner to communicate his needs and boundaries just as it is on you to communicate yours.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by outbursts but if these are directed at you or making you exhausted or stressed then that's definitely not okay. While his trauma may explain some of his outbursts or other behavior it of course in no way excuses them.
It also sounds like not only do you try to be an emotional support, but all the weight of financial support is on you as well. This is imbalanced.
What I would say is, your partner has a lot to be grateful for being that you not only offer him a safe place to live but you are the sole source of income, so it doesn't make sense to me that he blames you for his own unhappiness. If he is going to choose to mistreat you then it is your right to kick him out if necessary. It's a hard decision though of course, because you don't want him to be sent back to his abusers, but really, that's not your problem. If you need him to leave then you need him to leave, where he goes is not really for you to worry about. It's important to assert your boundaries and put your foot down when you've had enough, even if it doesn't benefit everyone.
If you don't think it would be safe for you to have a conversation with him about separating then you may want to consider coming up with a safety/escape plan. I found that this site can help you construct a comprehensive safety plan for yourself.
If anyone else has any comments or suggestions, feel free to add on. Otherwise, I hope I could help. Please let us know if you need anything.
