A woman who was arrested yesterday in Edinburgh for holding up a placard that said “fuck imperialism, abolish the monarchy,” has now been charged with a crime. If you got any joy at all out of seeing folk boo the proclamation of Charles Windsor yesterday, please make yourself aware of this, and please get in touch with your MSPs ASAP. This is heinous.
"WHAT’S A KING TO A GOD, WHAT’S A GOD TO A NONBELIEVER. He might be a decent bloke, who knows, but having a nation bow before you and accepting it, would imply he’s not. When a person is declared the supreme authority of an entire people by birth and ordained by God, it’s not something to take pride in, rather it’s something to be acutely ashamed of. No country deserves to be called “democratic” nor “civilised” whilst instating a King. Almost every year another country celebrates independence from Britain, from the King, if this doesn’t show why the monarchy is the antithesis of democracy, nothing will. Citizens of a country that sees 14 million living in poverty and thinks nothing of jailing a homeless man for stealing bread out of hunger, that has more food banks than McDonald’s, should not be forced to bow to those that preside over it. Rise up. End the monarchy, before it ends you."
- Martyn Reed (Nuart)
but if the monarchy was abolished wouldnt people still have to pay rent to the windsors because they own a lot of property?
If we abolished the monarchy, we would take their land into public ownership. Remember that this is inherited land that they either took, given by the government, or purchased with the funds that were taken from our taxes. It shouldn’t have been theirs on the first place.
I didn’t think that people realise just how much land and resources they hoard. The Crown Estate owns £15.6bn in assets across the UK, including more than 115,000 hectares of agricultural land and forests, retail properties, most of Regent Street and about 55% of UK beaches. Then there are the royal residences, another six palaces, seven castles, 12 homes, 56 cottages and 14 ancient ruins.
That land should be taken from them. Commercial land could help fund social projects, their palaces could be museums and galleries, farmland for sustainable farming, forests abd hunting estates as wildlife reserves, and much of the private land could be used to provide the housing or green spaces that we desperetrly need in the UK. There is absolutely no reason why a single family should own that much land, particularly one who does not use it in the public interest.
if i see one more american saying dumb shit about the coronation im going to explode us all w my mind. a guy just told me not to call myself a republican because ‘its offensive to american leftists’. what.

people will go on the news and talk about the queen saying things like “as we all know” followed by some boot-licking nonsense and it’s always like… who is this “we”?
