One of things that really turned me off of the pjo world among lots of other things was that all the titans and primordials were portrayed as purely evil with no nuance or variety in morality. In the books, even Iapetus, who is labelled a "good" titan, was pretty much brainwashed into being benevolent.
Nyx was such a loving and devoted mother in mythology that she scared off Zeus when he tried to harm her son Hypnos. Prometheus went through excruciating pain on a daily basis just for humanity to have light and heat. Leto was described as kind and gentle and was the titan goddess of motherhood. Phoebe gave Apollo, her grandson, the oracle of Delphi as a gift. Oceanus, in some myths, helped Zeus overthrow Kronos by giving him a potion that would induce vomiting and release his siblings and he and Tethys pretty much raised Hera during the titanomachy. Helios was a loving father to Circe and all his kids and even saved her when a giant attacked her island. Etc, etc.

A Critique of Riordan's: Neurodivergency
tldr: Rick made ADHD and dyslexia superpowers in the books which fit the time he wrote the books, but it's not accepted now cause it diminishes neurodivergent struggle. At the same time he made autism coded characters the 'annoying' ones and had a very racist thing of having the only neurotypical be Frank.
He tried to fix it in the show. It worked for about 3 seconds.
TW: Ableism, Autism speaks mention, r slur, anti-schizo stuff.
This paragraph is useless so don't read if you don't want to: Sitting in my drafts are 3 different 'A critique of Riordan's' posts i made as i tried to redo my full critique of the Riordanverse with a little more positive feedback and a little less Rick Riordan is the devil spawn. I have decided to not do it in order because because i watched the show and i noticed some things which were iffy and others which were great. So yeah neurodivergency first. Enjoy and think Critically.
Books
Research and Diversity
The books were written in the early 2000s for Rick's son who has ADHD and dyslexia
As a result, it takes on a very "your ADHD and dyslexia is a superpower" message which were popular during the time, but we recognise now has delegitimised neurodivergent struggles
Also as a result, the books were very focused on his son's symptoms, and represented ADHD as a monolith which quickly turned into stereotypes (e.g jumpy, impatient and fast reflexes becoming the connecting feature of half-bloods)
It got so unresearched that at one point he said:
Tumblr media
He also talks about coffee in a similar way, despite sugar and coffee not making us more hyperactive and instead making us sleepy. Unless all the scientists and people with ADHD are wrong i really don't know this works.
and also said this: "Leo was extremely ADHD even by demigod standards" Like what
But the worst part about the PJO books was that the neurodivergency was limited to the first book. Percy's ADHD and dyslexia magically vanish and honestly it's only really brought back up in HOO every now and then (not very well might i add)
Ways he could have improved:
He could have given other characters, like Annabeth, more diverse symptoms of ADHD. It wasn't that hard, For Annabeth recognise that she as a 'gifted kid' is more likely to have undiagnosed and so have to face the issues related to being undiagnosed and/or being both a gifted kid and having ADHD, and then also give her more symptoms common to girls like being really chatty or frequently daydreaming.
Continuing having ADHD (and dyslexia) as constant parts of the novels rather than throwaway lines. Build it into the characters actions and persona rather than add it on like an accessory
Research. Never stop researching. Always reach out to people with the disorders and ask them to help. Writing is nothing without research.
Get sensitivity readers
Grammar
This is really minor, but he keeps say ____ was ADHD, and like gramattically that's a no. I am not a disorder i am a person with a disorder . Note for autism, the prefered grammer is Autistic person (aka turn into adjective and describe, something we can't do with ADHD)
Nico and Leo
Making Leo and Nico the 2 characters who were annoying and unlikeable (to everyone else not to fans) was really weird cause these 2 characters were the autistic coded ones.
NOTE: I did see a post explaining it better in the past, and i will link it when/if i find it again.
Tyson and the R Slur
I genuinely think he tried to make the r-slur scene show that it was bad, but the way Percy reacted to it wasn't quite right. Especially for childrens books these things need to be really clear. So it was good to make a bad bully character who was hated say it, but he could have made it better by skipping Percy saying "He’s not r*tarded" and go straight to "I had to try really, really hard not to punch Sloan the face."
The scene was ok, it could have been better, but again these were written in the 2000s, we have to acknowledge that.
Percy and School
Now this is interesting because this is more recent. Percy tried really hard in school and was smart, it was part of his characterisation. But he never did well in school, because that's how his disability affected him (especially since it was the American school system which we all know is shit and even more shit for people with learning disabilities).
The problem stems from TSATS, where Percy is made out to skip school, and not try at all (feeds into people with ADHD do bad cause they don't try/are lazy)

Racism: Frank Zhang
Frank Zhang the only Asian member of the 7 has no form of neurodivergency, despite the rest of them all having. It must be a just coincidence that there's a stereotype that asians are really smart and good at maths and the fact that the rest of the Romans have dyscalculia/s.
It's not weird at all that the character instead has lactose intolerance, which is really common in East Asia unlike dyslexia, ADHD or dyscalculia, which has such a low rate of diagnosis because there is a large stigma behind the disorders and because white people don't think Asians can have learning disabilities/s. No not weird at all that the dude is described with symptoms of dyspraxia but Rick refuses to recognise he is not neurotypical/s
I'm stepping out of sarcasm speak to remind you that Asians with learning disabilities are significantly less likely to get diagnosed with anything because:
because their parents won't let them until they have no other choice (glares at my parents) because there's a massive stigma behind intellectual/learning/development disorders in these communities
When we do try to get diagnosed our claims are diminished because of racist stereotypes and the belief that booksmarts/giftedness = no learning disability. It means most psychologists and psychiatrists (who are usually white) think that all Asians are smart so they don't ever have any form of neurodivergency and we're left to struggle.
Schizo Rep
Octavian. Villain. Schizo. Again.
Do i even need to explain this?
Show
Not actually a specific disorder - Percy just has a learning disability
Interestly Percy's dyslexia is just never talked about, And even his ADHD is never mentioned by name. He's got a random learning disorder which isn't specified. At first i assumed it was still ADHD cause the books, but watching more, you realise they aren't actually focusing on what learning disorder he has and what he has to deal with as a result of that. It's just a generic learning disorder.
Which is weird because learning disorders are all different and we all face different things, even with the same disorder. So placing all learning disorders in the same group? not good. Don't know what i expected from disney, but it wasn't this.
Autism Speaks
So the show tried to acknowledge that Percy was constantly told he was special and heroic when he really wanted to have help for his issues and for people to recognise that he has problems and those are bad. It also represented less stereotypical adhd symptoms (though whether that's because the disorder is no longer adhd or whether they wanted more inattentive symptoms to be present, we'll never know)
but then it went ahead and used a broken puzzle metaphor for his neurodivergency?
Tumblr media
Puzzle piece metaphors when talking about any form of neurodivergency are a no go because the creators of the metaphor literally want Autistic people dead.
I DON'T GIVE A SHIT THAT HE DOESN'T HAVE AUTISM, WE ARE NOT ALLIES TO THE AUTISM COMMUNITY IF WE USE THE LANGUAGE AUTISM SPEAKS CREATED
Not only that but a broken puzzle is not a good way to represent us anyways because NEURODIVERGENTS AREN'T BROKEN.

Some people have problems with the way Rick Riordan describes gods. (me too, it's entitled) Some with his representation. I had a problem with his ADHD takes. Because. It. Sucks. You're not a demigod if you have it. Your stupid brain are broken and you have to struggle your whole life. And hey, it's usually a package deal: you're more prone to addiction, depression, anxiety, personality disorders. It's the same thing as writing about someone with diabetes and be like "uwu, it's your secret power".
No.
It sucks.
Like Diana Jones actually did a good job writing kids: loud kids, fat kids, anxious kids, evil kids, angry kids (Charles Morgan was so relatable) and she actually made them sympathetic. And Sophie and Howl were always such a fucking mood. She wrote books with representation before it was a mainstream thing. Seriously. Because she cared. So while her characters may not have the same disorders, skin color, gender, or birth place they had the same struggles and I love her for this. Sometimes I think we all forget about this.

Stop shitting Percy Jackson books into our faces
Get over it. It's done. You ended your cute little series. So it's time to stop. You're just ruining your characters.

A rant about Reyna’s love life situation in ToA…
So I just read the Tyrant’s Tomb and uhhh…I see why people have such mixed feelings about what happened with Reyna. Here are my thoughts (w/ spoilers of course).
- First of all, that whole Lester/Reyna pseudo love story thing was so…weird? Like, I understood the point of getting Reyna to reflect on dating, but like, did she really need a bizarre romantic subplot with Lester to achieve that? The whole incident w/ Venus felt like it only existed solely for the sake of this moment with Reyna, seeing as it was first introduced in this same book, and will likely be forgotten about afterwards. As a result, the whole thing seems so random with no buildup whatsoever. I think there are better ways to introduce Reyna’s interest in taking on celibacy and joining the Hunters than this pile of weirdness with Lester/Apollo.
- Second of all, a lot of Reyna’s dialogue concerning her love life sounded like Rick Riordan just inserting himself into the story, and it was extremely cringey. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think it was OOC for Reyna to say these things, but the language choices made it clear that RR was just using the character to voice his own thoughts (I literally cringed when he used the word “ship” unironically in her speech to Lester/Apollo near the end of the book. Nobody talks like this.) We have never seen any of the kids at New Rome actually mention Reyna’s love life in any of the books as far as I remember (let me know if I’m wrong). So this problem she has with other people “shipping” her doesn’t seem real in-universe and feels like it’s being brought up to address the fandom specifically and sort of…scold(?) them for shipping Reyna with other characters.
In addition, I don’t like it when authors use their characters as a disguise for their own thoughts. It ruins the integrity of the character and the story. If you have something to say to the fandom, just say it instead of hiding behind your character.
- Third, I find the line where Reyna says “Why do healthy friendships have to progress into romance” (or something like that) in response to Lester/Apollo asking her if she’s dating Thalia to be really hypocritical. Romance is a very major theme in RR’s books and he has a knack for pairing up as many characters as possible, even characters who don’t really need to be a relationship/whose romances could have worked just as well as a friendship. This line Reyna says about not every friendship needing to be a romance could apply to almost every couple in this franchise.
I give Percabeth, Frazel, SilenaxBeckendorf, and EmmiexJo a pass, because romance genuinely complements their stories, but as far as other ships goes, I actually think their romances were unnecessary/poorly executed/could’ve worked just as well as a friendship. ChrisxClarisse definitely didn’t need to be a thing; Clarisse doesn’t even give off romance vibes anyway and Chris stops existing after TLO. Grover and Juniper are cute, but nothing would change if their relationship didn’t exist. Jasper/Jiper might have genuinely been better as friends. Caleo ABSOLUTELY didn’t need to happen; I personally believe romance was NOT the best resolution for Leo’s arc. I give props to Nico and Will for being the first gay ship, but again, RR should not be using romance as a bandaid for emotional conflicts. Nico should learn to maintain healthy friendships first before jumping into romance. TysonxElla did not need to happen for any reason at all. A lot of the hinted pairings in The Hidden Oracle (Miranda & Sherman, Chiara x Damien, Valentina x Paolo) didn’t need to exist either. These are all side characters whose romances have little to no impact, and who would lose nothing if they were all just friends. Same for Lavinia x Poison Oak.
As you can see, RR loves to pair people up together. And most of these pairings are straight/straight-passing. But Reyna maybe liking girls is where he finally draws the line, and decides that romance doesn’t need to happen all the time? Seriously? Like don’t get me wrong, it’s cool to finally have a character in this franchise who chooses to be happily single, and I know that Thalia has not expressed any interest in women (neither has Reyna, tbh), but like…still. RR has been gung-ho about romance everywhere else, even with characters where it literally didn’t matter. Why did he draw the line here?
All of this also makes me wonder if Piper/Shel became a thing just to placate disappointed fans who wanted to see a major character in a wlw relationship. I remember RR’s tweet where he was like “I didn’t want to make Reyna like girls because it would seem like girls only like girls if things don’t work out with boys”. This is a nice sentiment, but it becomes questionable when you realize that what he tried to avoid with Reyna is basically what he did with Piper? And to make matters worse, Shel is such a non-character. She exists for a few pages at the very end of the final series, has no canon personality or physical appearance (as far as I remember), and she’s so unimportant, she doesn’t even have a last name! Her only purpose in the story is to show us that Piper likes girls, which is so lame! Why not give a wlw between two fully fleshed out characters instead of this last-minute romance between a major character and a character who’s just a device?
- Lastly, I’m really tired of RR shoving the female characters that he doesn’t want to pair up into vows of celibacy (Rachel, Thalia, and now Reyna). In fact, this happens with the male characters too, where they are either dating (Percy, Grover, Tyson, Leo, Nico, Will, Frank, Jason) or they’re dead (Luke, Octavian, Jason).
Reyna was so close to being the first major character who didn’t fall into this pattern and then it was ruined. There are many options that people can have for their love lives beyond dating or mandatory celibacy, Richard Riordan, and these options are not that hard to write/explore even in a book aimed at preteens. The characters could easily say that they’re not interested in romance at the moment and may become interested at a later point, that they’re interested but are waiting for a person that they truly want to date, that they’re working on friendships right now, that they’re focused on other things right now, etc. Not everyone needs to be paired up, but not everyone needs to take on a vow of celibacy either. Characters are allowed to just be single, no explanations given. There are so many things Reyna could do besides being a Hunter. She could go to school, travel the world, do something similar to Emmie and Jo where she creates a safe haven for others, maybe even a safe haven for abused girls such as a herself. Becoming a Hunter is not the only option here.
Sorry for the length of this rant, and sorry if this post sounds hyper-critical of Rick. I’m just not impressed with the way Reyna’s love life was handled, and how she explained it using dialogue that was essentially just Rick Riordan talking. Very weird.

Alright I'm gonna say it
Annabeth being POC is a stupid STUPID idea unless you change Alot of her characterization
Look, Rick's representation is stereotypeical at best and offensive at worst but I'm not here to talk about piper Hazel or Leo no there are other posts for that but you might say, hey Annabeth's race isn't important to her character like them!!!
Here's the thing. Annabeth was never meant to be a POC character. Rick specifically wrote her as not being one. If she was a POC character well... It would be the same as making Hermione granger black without realizing how messed up the implications are. Hermione a POC girl making an organization to help free house elves who are slaves but being told again and again that she's being stupid. Those slaves want to be slaves!!!
Now you're telling me that Annabeth chase a supposed poc would think that she has to work harder than other people and that she's opreseed because she's BLONDE???
oh wait speaking of that, yet another poc character with white features. Same as Hazel and Piper with their gold and kaleidoscope eyes to show how special they are!!!
Also Annabeth who's often short tempered and at times physically violent is supposed to be POC now? We just LOVE some angry black woman stereotype don't we Rick?
Look I'm happy for the fans but Annabeth being poc just shows how empty Rick's representation is and would just hammer in bad stereotypes unless there are some major changes to her character

If i rewrote the Riordanverse books with more accurate mythology, more diversity, less racism & ableism, less paradoxes, more found family, etc
Note: The only difference between YA and Middle Grade would be that they could say fuck in YA since i don't plan to make it violent
Also Note: Middle grade is what the current books are rated

after viewing everyone fawn over rick riordan since the pjo teaser dropped, i feel like people need to be reminded that rick riordan does not care about representation.
at. all.
in the first series, there were only two minority characters who were killed off violently.
in the second series, all of his "rep" is riddled with stereotypes and blatantly racist things. (he literally called frank a "chinese canadian baby man")
they either all have eurocentric features (piper and hazel), or are annoying (leo), or are rude to others (reyna and frank and samirah).
it's absolutely incredible that there is representation of different skin colours in the series and i think it's so important for kids to be able to see themselves in their heroes, but do not erase rick riordan's extremely racist and problematic past and label him as someone who always gave proper rep.

Ngl it would’ve been rlly interesting and meaningful for Percy and Leo—two ppl who’d been abused in the past—to have a conversation where that topic was brought up somehow and they discussed it and realized that they’ve, at last, found someone who genuinely understands their pain and emotions abt it. It would’ve been a great way to bond and become closer—and I can see the two being more supportive and protective of each other, after; especially whenever a situation relating to or that could have similar connotations to their respective pasts occurs. It def would’ve made things more real and healing, in a sense, and touched on the interactions of two demigods who barely got any canon time together
but of course, Rick’s main priority in HoO was the romances, wasn’t it 🙄

Trying to seem happy for her sake because you are grateful that she respected your wishes and didn't interfere , you know how much kind and selfless she is, you aknowledge the pain she was going through trying to hold herself back from helping you .
Even though, you faced the enemy who killed your mother and your heart is still full with rage and revenge, you still have the compassion and the kindness to smile for her sake.
You are happy she is here for you and you show it
Paralled with
Tumblr media
Trying to look happy for your own sake, because you are too much of a coward to face a man and you find the perfect excuse to make it seem as if you did your friend a favor.
Even though, you know how much of a solitary distrusful person she is and that you are going to leave her with people whose intentions were still unknown, you still have the ruthlessness to lie to yourself for your own sake.
She is not happy you weren't there for her and you know it.
Basically
Ichigo being selfless for Rukia's sake
vs
Renjo being selfish for his own sake
PS
You can go back to the chapter of his fight with Ichigo. At the end, Renjo clearly admitted to him that what he told himself about Rukia finding a better life was lying to himself. He said he was a coward scared of going against Byakuya that's the real reason why he abandoned her

R3nruk1 will never make any sense in my head! And it's mostly because of Ruk1a, why on earth she would marry and have a daugther with R3nji? "They know each other for a long time" since when this is a good reason? And despite that fact, they never looked close or that intimate with each other, she seems closer to fucking Ori rather than him! And R3nji barely did something for her anyaways, he were extremely unsopportive to Ruk1a for a long time of their relationship, to the point of letting her die because he couldn't do anything! Sometimes i really question if R3nji actually loves Ruk1a sinde various times it really doesn't seem it...
And another factor is that we already seen Rukia in love! The way she behaved and thought of Kaien was completely different than with anyone else especially R3nji! But kub0 want me to believe she was so in love with Abarai that she married him?
I'm sorry, but i'll never get the "i got r//r or i don't have problem with r//r", their relationship turning into a romantic thing is way too forced considering their behaviours with each other throughout the story, and how this is extremely ooc for Ruk1a.

we're clearly to believe that bob small bob and damasen all perish in that fight. we did not need a whole book to resolve a plot point that was already resolved.
