Anyways besties if anyone feels like reading the stars are dying by Chloe C. Peñaranda just because the author herself promotes it by “love interest similar to the Darkling/Luc from Addie Larue” save your time. It’s just another FBAA fanfiction. The sentences are so convoluted they make no sense n the whole story is just spelled out to you in the prologue!

Super random but did you ever read the from blood and ash series? If yes what did you think?
Every like, 500 new followers someone asks me this and I cackle every time. EVERY. TIME.
Did I read FBAA + the book that came next? Yes. Yes, because booktok hyped them up as comparable to ACOTAR and I was brand new to booktok and didn't realize you can't trust any recommendations from there. I read FBAA and it was bad, but the ending picked up and I thought that maybe it was just a rough start and the rest of the series would be like the last 50 pages.
And I bought the next two books in the series but I only read the second ones. I honestly have nothing good to say about these books. Like, if you like positive reviews or you enjoy the series, look away.
JLA is not a good writer. Everyone hypes up her banter and I was reading it via voice note to my best friend while we laughed, it was so cringe, so bad. The world building is so poorly fleshed out and so badly considered that I don't know anyone who truly understands the world or the magic system or ANYTHING.
Sheltered teenage girl who is terribly stupid but somehow a master assassin blah blah blah, it's such a ridiculous premise. Poppy is literally too dumb to live and yet I'm supposed to believe the powers that be somehow didn't notice her sword lessons? Or her running all over the place? She's sneaky enough to get into a brothel but not smart enough to steal even one history book from the library?
So instead she's asking 800 questions about the world. It's repetitive and a frustrating way to learn things. I also hate the whole "oh no I have a scar therefore im SOOoooOOOOOooOOO ugly" like jesus christ shut the fuck up. I'm begging authors to stop doing this. Literally, having to listen to a million descriptions of how beautiful she is minus this one tiny flaw like I can't do it.
Sex in the snow was bad enough, but in the ashes of someones dead body? Everyone shut the fuck up forever about Rhysand and Feyre in that war tent. You don't know how bad it could be. A battle is literally raging around them and they take the time to fuck over that lady's body, I almost rage quit.
Poppy, who has magic, becomes even more overly powered and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say she uses that power maybe once, and we never learn a lot about it. Just more magic, more magical backstory set against 500 pages of nothing and then 50 pages of all the plot all at once. The second book is so stagnant it's painful. I DNF'd, I won't read another. Seeing how mad everyone was at the last book was like, thank you. These books are shitty start to finish and I'm tired of having to pretend that they're good. If you like them, fine. No one said you can't. But enjoying something doesn't make it good.

I wish I loved From Blood and Ash by JLA, but it doesn’t hit for me.
They marketed the book as a “fantasy bodyguard romance, forbidden love” etc. And I was sold! So I picked up fbaa and was thoroughly heartbroken the longer I read it. All the inconsistencies, goofy banter, filler (it needed a ton of editing, sorry), on top of the excessive info-dumping for the world building, AND I could NOT get behind the cringe MMC/LI, which made this book a 2/5 stars for me. And I felt that was a generous rating but then someone roasted me on goodreads for posting my review.
Recently, I started the 2nd book because my friend said it gets better but I stopped. Maybe this series just really isn’t my thing.
Sigh.

I'm procrastinating on reading ACOMAF by reading From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout and I'm silently begging in my mind that ACOMAF can't be any worse than this. Poppy/Penelaphe (what a stupid name) is as stupid and naive af, Hawke (also a stupid ass name, I've never heard of anyone called Hawke, if so, I apologize to them) is creepy and annoying and the romance was about as interesting as a piece of cardboard. No, wait, it's not only the romance, it's the whole damn book that's boring. There were phrases that would repeat over and over, for example, a description of how "hot" and how "beautiful" Hawke's eyes are, or Hawke saying that Poppy tastes like honeydew (I can't remember if this thing was repeated a lot though and I'm too lazy to check). If I have to listen (since I'm listening to the audiobook of FBAA) ONE MORE F*CKING TIME ABOUT HOW POPPY TASTES LIKE HONEYDEW, I WILL SMASH EVERYTHING IN THE VICINITY. Bitch, I EAT honeydew. Does that mean I've been eating Poppy's vagina all this time? You know what, I'm not going to even think about that, it'd be too weird. Anyhow, I'll try to finish the book anyway since I'm a masochist it seems and also, I don't like leaving books unfinished, no matter how bad the book is. So on we go!
*sigh*
In short, June and July seems to be the month of bad book decisions. I swear, this must be punishment for all the stuff I did in the past. And as a parting word, I ain't trusting GR ratings and reviews and my sister anymore, that shit and my sister was what deluded me into thinking that FBAA was good.

no like .. what does this MEAN. to a degree i understand what she’s saying but like.. if artists are drawing poppy as a thin woman they are not portraying her accurately in a way that reframes her identity and limits representation… same as if someone drew her without her scars. this is such a WEIRD take from jla ??? just condemn skinnywashing it’s so easy??? how can you say it’s not okay to argue she’s thin but it IS okay to draw her thin?? lmao goodnight

Hi anon!
It was kind of abrupt, and I do apologize for that -- truly. It's why I am tackling this ask! But, it was very freeing to delete that blog, and it felt as if a weight had truly been lifted from my chest to see it go. Bittersweet, yes! But absolutely needed. Constantly seeing asks box jump from 300 to 400+, the constant hate messages, the inboxes -- it was all too much for me to tackle, and honestly, it felt as if my blog was just no longer productive at that point.
I am always 100% behind the points made on that blog, and the problems in SJM's writing. My passion for those points will never fade or change for that matter. But I think the book community and publishing are just not ready for an actual change -- and it's tough to have the conversation about racial and abusive themes in books when people pick and choose when to chastise and ignore. It's literally like having a conversation with a wall. I can't honestly have a conversation about tackling racism in the book industry when people can't even let go of a book series that isn't even well written. We aren't being militant about the problems in the book industry, and its exactly why it looks the way it does. I don't know, I think I've grown apathetic to it. The urge for docility among reviewers disguised as 'allyship,' the flip-flop about abuse and abusive themes in books. None of it makes sense. And it's like the legwork to make it happen just doesn't seem worth having someone constantly throw vitriol in your face. It just seemed like it becomes a tit-for-tat straw-man debate in the end, and that -- again -- isn't productive. 'Tamlin stans this' and 'Nesta stans that, and it was like ?? Can we just think outside of that? We can't complain about the way PoC are always treated in the story and then turn around and defend an author who would 100% kill them off and let her white character wear their trauma like a second skin. Like how serious are these conversations when the ones having them are unwilling to stop supporting the author propagating these harmful tropes to other authors. FBAA ran because ACOTAR walked; ACOTAR ran because Twilight walked. These harmful stereotypes in these books melded and made the environment we have today. And it is what is.
As another blog asked, I will not be returning to that blog as it was deleted. But there are so many beautiful and articulate antis in the tag that adeptly explain the problems in this series and in much clearer and more concise ways! My blog was a rambling mess anyways!
Funny addition: And do you know the sheer frustration of typing up an entire post that's 2000+ with links and citations talking seriously about abuse and racism and how its portrayed in the media just for someone to skim the post and make a follow-up, sub-post that starts with: 'Tamlin stans always think.' -- yeah never again.

I have to say I’m actually worried for the ACOTAR fandom after seeing the FBAA fandom mess. I know that FBAA is a lot smaller, but there’s a lot of crossover between the fandoms from what I’ve seen, especially on Twitter. I’ve been bombarded with tweets saying things like “JLA caved to fan service now her entire series is sinking, let this be a warning for SJM if she make gwynriel happen” and honestly this is insane.
I know SJM has weathered the craziness of fandom turmoil after ACOWAR, but I can’t help but think that’s going to look super minor compared to the toxicity the Aaron and Erica shippers will spew when that ship is confirmed DOA. I get because ACOTAR has a larger fan base and gwynriel/elucien make up a large portion of it they can probably drown out the antis. I just hate to think the gremlins of the fandom are going to try and ruin the release.
I can only imagine them poorly coordinating a changedotorg petition (which would be funny honestly) and spamming 1 star reviews and hate messages on SJM’s insta. I mean they threatened to kidnap her child after ACOSF when people were initially exited over the gwynriel ship, I can only imagine what depraved shit they would say/do because they didn’t get their way. Imagine being against fan service and then threatening to kidnap a toddler because you were upset another ship was being teased and you were pissed.
Honestly... I'm still not really worried. I don't think that anything could happen in the books that could cause people to treat one another worse than they already have. I would be more worried for the fandom than for sjm, but once people figure out how to block and move on, even that isn't that bad. That's really what we all should be doing, but I don't blame people for being morbidly curious about what the bullies are doing. I know more than I want to because sometimes it's fascinating 🤣
SJM already doesn't pay attention to what the fandom does - she said she has zero social media apps on her phone - so whatever we do isn't going to affect her. The only way she will be impacted is in sales, and tbh that is the only way she should be affected. She writes a book, we decide to buy it or not, the end. That should be the extent of our relationship with her. I can't believe that JLA has (had?) such a close relationship with her fanbase, considering how insane and entitled people can get.
They can spam the reviews, sure. But is that going to stop us, or other people, from reading the book? Seeing an outraged review from some random tiktoker isn't going to persuade any fans worth having of anything.
(I just checked, TWOTQ is back up to 4.03 stars on Goodreads. The fad of hating on it has already died down.)
They are all sound and fury, with none of the spine. The FBAA thing has already died down from the initial release. JLA didn't even come out of that experience with a decent anti community, which SJM has had for years.

Besties I don't know why you are still surprised when another toxic man breaks your heart. The internet is literally telling you that being with a 200-year-old manipulative abuser with political power who would murder half a country to 'save' you is romantic. That's not a healthy relationship, it's setting yourself up for hair loss and depression.

Kinda annoyed that authors nowadays make their couples look like every other famous couple. Not just the couples, but especially the guys.
The amount of times I confused the bat boys with that dude from fourth wing, kotw or fbaa is... wow.
I legit confuse them with Hunt and Lorcan all the goddamn time.
I need more couples that are like Elucien. More couples like Kanej or Zoyalai. I'm getting tired of the same old "badass girl" (bonus if she has brown hair) with another wallmart version of Rhys or Cass.
Okay, but literally so do I. And I don't think this is the product of booktok (but maybe an exaggerated symptom), because the Hunger Games spawned a 100 dystopian books and Twilight brought about vampires, but like...I do think a LOT of these authors want a slice of that ACOTAR popularity without understanding what it even is about SJM's character construction that makes her so popular. Like say what you want about her- there's certainly a lot you could say- she is VERY good about making readers care about her characters. Even anti-sjm folks have a favorite character of hers they'll fight to the death over.
And when other authors try and rewrite Rhys/Nesta/Feyre/Cassian/Azriel, they don't understand the dynamics or dismiss them as just the handsome, dark haired warrior and the plucky, sassy heroine and thats just...not even a THIRD of it. Like, it IS dollar store Bat Boys because their personalities get diluted into "hot/tattooed/wings" but then also they become meaner to the point you can't understand what the heroine even likes about this man, he never experiences any growth, he's not forced to change in any way, and it's somehow HEA.
Anyway, I could rant about this forever. Everyone wants a dark haired LI, but no one wants to give him a personality
