This Month In History - February
Feb. 1, 1972: Harvest released
In Feb. 1972, one of Neil Young’s biggest and best albums was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 50th Harvest!
Feb. 1, 1982: Late Night with David Letterman premieres
In Feb. 1982, the late night talk show that was on after The Tonight Show premiered. At the time, I was way too young to stay up late enough to watch it. As I started to get into comedy when I was about 12, I had been hearing and reading so much about this wacky late night host David Letterman. I began to stay up late on Friday nights to catch his show and I also began taping his shows and watching the next day when he had guests I was a fan of. His style was unlike Johnny Carson or Arsenio Hall at that time. He was in a category all his own. Stupid Pet Tricks, Velcro Jumping, throwing water balloons off the roof - it was a completely unconventional approach to the TV talk show format. After Letterman left NBC for CBS in 1993, Conan O’Brien took over as host, followed by Jimmy Fallon in 2009, and then current host Seth Meyers who took over in 2014. The show is a comedy institution and has had a huge influence on me! Happy 40th Late Night!
Feb. 7, 1997: subUrbia opens
In Feb. 1997, Richard Linklater’s adaptation of Eric Bogosian’s play was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 25th subUrbia!
Feb. 14, 1992: Wayne’s World opens
In Feb. 1992, the greatest movie based on an SNL sketch was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 30th Wayne’s World!
Feb. 21, 1997: Lost Highway opens
In Feb. 1997, David Lynch’s classic was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 25th Lost Highway!
Feb. 24, 2017: Get Out opens
In Feb. 2017, comedian Jordan Peele (known for Key and Peele) surprised everyone by being a master of horror movies with this sharp socio-political commentary that’s equally funny and scary. I named it my #6 Movie of the 2010s and I have the blu-ray sitting in my collection. Happy 5 Get Out!
Feb. 27, 1987: A Nightmare on Elm Street part 3 Dream Warriors opens
In Feb. 1987, the second best NOES movie was released. Here is my piece I wrote in 2017. Happy 35th ANOES3!
Feb. 28, 1997: Hard Eight opens
In Feb. 1997, Paul Thomas Anderson’s first feature film was released (following a Sundance premiere a year earlier). The film was overshadowed by PTA’s next film Boogie Nights, which was released later that year, but Hard Eight marks an impressive debut. The crime film set in Reno, NV boasts a very impressive cast: Philip Baker Hall, Gwyneth Paltrow, John C. Reilly, and Samuel L. Jackson to name a few. People don’t talk about this film in the pantheon of PTA films as much as his later work, but I actually think its one of his best films. Definitely worth a re-visit if you haven’t seen it in a while. Happy 25 Hard Eight!
