Just My Thoughts Pt. 30
Tumblr media
As we approach the end of FT 100 YQ (manga), I have a lot of expectations and hopes for a good ending that’s well thought out and developed. Right now we are entering into Ignia’s arc which is probably the most anticipated one of the series so far and I really hope it’s not disappointing. The other arcs were good not great in the sense that they could’ve been developed a bit more since some parts seemed rushed or underwhelming.
Starting off with Lucy, I think there is a lot that could be done with her. While there were some parts where she was displayed well such as the Star dress mix or her battles during Selene’s arc, I think that she should have the spotlight at some point. She is often used for fan service and I don’t really have a care for that but it undermines her intelligence and soft hearted personality. For instance, in the original series we have seen her come up with great ideas such as closing the eclipse gate, sacrificing Aquarius, and using fairy sphere. And not to forget, she was also the one to figure out where Mavis’ grave was located during Tenrou island arc. I don’t really recall any memorable aspects of the 100 YQ that can even hold a candle to these from the original manga.
Therefore, I truly believe she’s in a need to showcase her abilities especially her intellect way more. Perhaps a mini arc for her reunion with Aquarius (via finding her key) or some interaction with Ignia. I have wondered why 100 YQ has been accomplished in over a century and of course Agnologia has some part in creating fear but is that truly all there is too it’s incompletion? I am hoping for something a bit more complex. Maybe Lucy can figure this out. Maybe she can have a battle all on her own. She’s grown so much since the start of the entire franchise and I would love to see her fight against multiple opponents at once. No help from the others. I would also love to see more Star dress mixes or maybe a new development. She’s most definitely the strongest and most powerful celestial mage, even surpassing Anna who probably held that position for a long time.
Or she can find out more about who Ignia is. We know he’s Igneel’s biological son but what was their relationship like? How come Natsu didn’t know much about him? What are Ignia’s true intentions? What does he want with all of the mages with fire related magic abilities? I really hope the ending isn’t downplayed like the original story with END because let’s all be honest, it was so disappointing because where was the drama?! Everything that has been hyped up with showing END as this awful villain was not shown properly. I also think a connection back to Lucy’s fear of Natsu’s flames caused by Ignia would be interesting. I desperately need this to happen!
Anyway I’m getting off track but I just want Lucy to shine through her battle strategy, intelligence, and her amazing personality at least once before the end of the manga.

Am I the only one concerned about the fact the opening credits for s4 of Black Butler includes very specific stuff that's not in the manga, like a giant fire person walking around? Who or what the heck is that?!? 🤔

In the manga, Chikori only took a photo of Toto:
Tumblr media
But in the anime, they made it a candid couple photo, I can’t—
Tumblr media
The anime is really setting them up as a couple, and I’m not complaining

Expansion In Black Butler, Public School Arc Anime: Stained Glass
One of the things that absolutely delights me with the new anime is how they’ve used expansion to bring the world to life. I hope to do more posts on this when I am able to get better screenshots, so for now please accept these poor quality ones I took with my phone.
What is “expansion” in this sense?
Essentially, when you adapt something for the screen, you often have to add stuff to fill space, both in the physical sense of what’s on the screen, but also in terms of time. A scene might work fine on one manga page, but if you kept the view fixed like that for an entire scene in an anime or live action, the audience would quickly lose interest.
The anime has done a good job of expanding to fill these spaces in a way that can be charming and clever.

Tumblr media
Something I noticed while rewatching the episode for the twenty millionth time, I realized that the stained glass window that is featured so prominently in the opening scene has been expanded into something with far more symbolism than the original manga page:
Tumblr media
The basic design of the room and window is retained, but far more detail has been added, including the fact that the window has two halves, each with a person depicted on them, and they frame Ciel on both sides.
He’s quite literally trapped in shadow between two people, and to me, this is representative of how he is caught between Sebastian and Undertaker/His twin. (Or perhaps one is meant to be RC and one UT, with Seb the shadow in between.)
But there’s more. The top window has a flower motif, but the central flower looks a lot like a star, or perhaps a lily if it were spread out flat?? Additionally, the four flowers of the Weston houses appear in each corner.
Tumblr media
Additionally, the window has distinctive doves above and below the saints. While ofc that is a common animal in Christian iconography, the fact that the reapers use pigeons (doves) to communicate, and the fact that UT is a former reaper, could mean this was a very deliberate choice. Perhaps representing how reapers communicate to their superiors (there are images of a man and woman at the top I assume is meant to represent Jesus and Mary)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The images of the saints feel very familiar to me, but I’m such a lapsed Catholic that I’ve been struggling to identify them.
I thought perhaps that the one on the left could be Frances of Assisi. He’s the patron saint of animals, and is often associated with birds.
The other, I am really unsure about. I thought about things like St. Paul or Augustine, but those don’t fit.
Perhaps St Lazarus? For those of you unfamiliar with Christian mythos, Lazarus died and came back to life, so he’s associated with resurrection. That would certainly fit kuro and Undertaker, wouldn’t it?
A few depictions of stained glass windows featuring St Frances and St Lazarus:

They didn’t do justice to this scene in the anime…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe I’m biased since this is one of my favorite Natsu panels!! He just looks so good and that smirk gosh how I love it!!
He looks so confident in the manga like he knows he’s the one to beat but in the anime he looks…well he just looks like he’s about to fight I guess?!

Give me my feral Albert: Adoption
I’ve never realized that the adoption of William and Louis differs between the anime and manga. It felt like the anime filled the gaps—vague plots—in the manga, but the more I crosscheck, the more I found differences. Once again, the anime tamed my feral Albert. How so? Let’s have a closer look.
In the anime, the adoption of an orphan revolved around the Earl Moriarty. It showed that the Earl was cornered to foster an orphan.
Tumblr media
Duchess Pénières was a noble in a higher rank than Earl Moriarty. If he was questioned by the Duchess herself, in front of the society in the party, how could he say no? Though in this scenario, another question popped up in my mind: How come a noble such as the Duchess had the heart to foster an orphan, at that era where Albert despised literally everything in the world? Following the logic of the story, this was rather questionable. But then, it was an addition, anime only, background.
So let’s just continue. The conversation led the Earl to ask Albert to chose an orphan to bring home.
Tumblr media
It was the Earl who took the initiative to foster an orphan, rather than Albert, even though he was forced to do it. It seemed like the idea of taking William and Louis home came to Albert’s mind because the Earl asked him to. He wouldn’t dare to actually ask William and Louis otherwise. At least, with the sequence of the scenes in episode 2, I myself interpreted it that way.
And this very interpretation, was a contrary to the manga.
Interestingly, the adoption revolved heavily around Albert's mother and the original William in the manga. We firstly learn about the adoption from the countess, when she lashed out to our William.
Tumblr media
It didn’t say much yet, only that they were adopted, but noticed how full of hatred she was about our William calling her “Mother”. We get so much more about the adoption out of the original William.
Tumblr media
Okay so, there were no hints of the Earl making a move to adopt an orphan. So far, the fact that William and Louis were adopted was because of Albert. He was the only one having the “noble” mind to come up with something so bizarre like adopting orphans. Obviously not the original William himself or the countess, but also not the Earl. So where was the Earl in the manga? He showed up a little.
Tumblr media
We can see that the Earl was, like all other nobles at that time, hungry for a higher position in the system. He despised and avoid connections with people from the lower class. He based his actions as to whether it would benefit his position in nobility. He was not someone who would just agree to adopting an orphan from the lower class. So, the question now was: How did Albert actually manage his father to adopt not one, but two orphans from the lower class?
Two possible answers as of now.
First, as we’ve seen from the previous panel, Albert used the “noblesse oblige” to bring William and Louis home. He probably had a heated discussion with the Earl about it. I am leaning to think that the discussion was in private, because if the discussions were carried out with the whole family, can you imagine the countess’ reactions? Albert was clever enough to avoid something that will make his plan fail. However, discussing things only, wouldn’t make the Earl agree, I suppose. There must be something else…
My discussion with @hergan416 brought to light, the affair that the Earl was having. I don’t know how could I skip this fact, when it was explicitly there.
Tumblr media
Now, this was something we don’t get from the anime either. And where would this bring us to? Did Albert know? Oh, I believe Albert knew. I mean, even the original William knew…
In the past, Albert had won the negotiation for his weekly visits to the orphanage before. Oh I believe this brought dispute before, since the Earl has the responsibilities of his children’s actions. Words spread fast, and what would others say when they see Albert went to the slums every week? Even if it was for charity.
Adoption was much bigger than just visitations though, so I guess Albert had to use a trump card for this. The affair. Did he threaten to leak the affair? Because even if it was probably a common practice, but it would struck the Earl’s position if publicized. Did he ask cooperation from the mistress to smooth out his plan? Because if it could increase the probability even just a little… I honestly don’t know, but I would like to think both?
He had the brain. He had the power and access. He had won against his father once, so I’d like to believe he had the courage too. It was not as big as his desire to get rid of people. It was only to bring two people to his house. I believe he would give it all. After he made the offer to William. After he found his way of salvation.
In the end, we see the adoption happening. Whatever he did, he succeeded. Maybe he asked for William’s assistance, maybe not. Didn’t really matter. But as you can see once again, Albert was not the lame teenager who just did as he was told as the anime showed. He didn’t bring William and Louis home because the Earl asked him to. He pushed the agenda to his father. He was taking the initiative. This is the Albert I know.

Kuro anime in 2024
So... two blogs have messaged me today about this: there's gonna be new Black Butler anime in 2024....
I'm hoping it's "Book of Weston", or whatever they call it for the anime, though there seems to have been another change to the anime staff, because one of the blogs says the look of the animation has changed again.
Crunchyroll is apparently running teaser ads for it.
Guess we'll see... eventually.

I can’t believe I took so long to watch episode 6 when it contains one of my most favorite RonToto moments ever
Also, can we just appreciate this slight line change in the anime:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t know if it’s just the translation, but the shift from “the person I’m solving a case with” to simply “you,” addressing Toto directly, feels so much more personal and really highlights how important Toto is to Ron
And god, the voice acting for Ron is sooo good. You can really hear his voice trembling. The man was so damned terrified
