Underrated element of where Jiang Cheng is re: wwx after everything is that they always had a sort of dual relationship. Two different relationship premises, superimposed on one another.
There's the one where they grew up together, as close as brothers, beating each other up and complaining and being one another's closest companions, sharing a bedroom as kids and eating at the same family dinner table, actively encouraged by Jiang Fengmian to interact as equals.
And then there's the one where Wei Wuxian was in service to Jiang Cheng's family. Not as a servant--Jiang Fengmian absolutely refused to do that, even if he couldn't adopt him. But as a disciple of Jiang Cheng's father and recipient of his charity, as Jiang Cheng's future right hand and most trusted subordinate.
It's a vertical relationship, intimate in its own way but with very strict expectations about what obligations flow in what directions; they are not identical and reciprocal as between friends and equals.
(It's my opinion that Jiang Fengmian's core deal was a deep-seated discontent with the hierarchies he was at the top of, without access to any way to actually deconstruct them or even coherently articulate his opposition. Wei Changze was his dear friend, and no one thinks that's a good enough reason for him to treat Wei Changze's son like his own, because Wei Changze was also his servant, and you can't make that circle square. That's not a way you're allowed to love.)
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were like brothers; Wei Wuxian served Jiang Cheng.
The personal relationship was always the most important one. To them, in their hearts. But it was the other one that was real, that had weight in the world.
And it's important to understand that neither can be held up as more factual than the other, even though they conflict. Both relationships existed, and had power.
So then when Jiang Cheng chose to hate Wei Wuxian and articulate his grudge against him, he chose to do it in the language of fealty. Because as far as he knew, his case there was secure, watertight, and it wouldn't expose him emotionally or politically.
And those are the terms in which he's been condemning him all this time: for abandoning the Sect, for ingratitude, for lack of loyalty.
For fuckups, too, and poor judgment, but some of that now turns out to have been justified and some of it was mostly the fault of enemies behaving badly, or even Jiang Cheng himself allowing himself to be pushed into making unworthy choices.
And it was all for his sake.
The thing, the thing in my opinion, about what Wei Wuxian did, about the core transfer and his silent self-destruction around keeping it secret, is that that is a hideous thing to have done between two people who love each other, as an act of love. Beautiful, but awful. As the man who was like a brother to him, Jiang Cheng has a great deal of standing to object to it.
But as an act of vassalage, it's basically perfect.
If Wei Wuxian were only what he formally was to Jiang Cheng, if he is interpreted through a lens of fealty and obligation, he did exactly what he should have done, and went beyond what duty actually required. And went to his death silently, allowing himself to be judged, taking all the burden on himself rather than let harm come to his lord.
Like, obviously Jiang Cheng was harmed by the part where Jin Zixuan got manslaughtered and Jiang Yanli walked into the line of fire in situations where Wei Wuxian was resorting to violence and probably shouldn't have, but those are one step removed from the core issue. In terms of Wei Wuxian's intentional choices around Jiang Cheng himself, at the times he was feeling betrayed and abandoned Wei Wuxian was in fact being impossibly, poetically loyal, an absolute cliche about it.
But only in terms of the hierarchical form of their relationship.
Which means that even though Jiang Cheng has a lot of reasons to still be mad at Wei Wuxian, his actual complaints that he's centered for thirteen years are basically wiped out by the revelation of Wei Wuxian's sacrifice.
Wei Wuxian was in fact doing the tragic hero loyal vassal thing, which very much includes being misunderstood and slandered by the world. (Chenqing as a name choice absolutely references this expectation, and the idea that Jiang Cheng specifically will never understand that Wei Wuxian was trying to help him first and foremost all along; he is not subtle.)
The debts Jiang Cheng has been spitefully calling in and considering defaulted were already long paid.
So if at this point Jiang Cheng keeps pursuing that same line of rhetorical attack, now that he knows, he'll be putting himself morally in the wrong, and he knows it. But if he pivots to something else, he'll both be signalling the shape of that secret to the entire world and looking like a prize idiot.
Which is already how he feels.
To actually address the remaining grievances between them, which are considerable, would require releasing those safe, open grudges to Wei Wuxian's face and then reclaiming him as a loved one. Which is, one could fairly say, more than anyone could expect.
Which is why Wei Wuxian told him he didn't have to.
Which leaves Jiang Cheng at something of an impasse.

still kind of insane to me that people talk shit about jiang cheng without fully understanding what he has been through so lets just understand what his mental state is like BEFORE canon begins:
born via a dysfunctional marriage to be the sect heir
father doesnt care for him, mother expects too much from him/everything he does is not enough
has his three dogs just kicked out randomly with no notice because of some kid he's never heard of by the father who never gave him love and/or attention
said father then favours this kid more than him, to the point that the entire world basically thinks that this kid is biologically your father's son as well, which causes even more family dysfunction
despite this still learns to love this kid as his unofficial brother
works his absolute hardest but is always second-best because his new shixiong is naturally talented
nobody appreciates the hard work he puts in at being second place despite the fact wwx literally doesnt work hard for it
masks his emotions with anger as a coping mechanism to minimise the amount of hurt he feels
ok great so now lets actually take all of the above and apply this mental wellbeing to canon events FROM HIS PERSPECTIVE (keep in mind this is literally what jc is seeing/experiencing because he DOESNT KNOW what the reader knows):
brother is off being the protagonist and getting in trouble and gets their sisters marriage ruined
comes home from a year away and then almost immediately has to go and be a hostage where brother continues his protagonist behaviour
gets trapped and nearly dies in a cave with a 400-year-old monster, is in charge of finding a way out and making sure everyone else escapes
brother and a guy who maybe hates him get stuck behind in the cave so now jiang cheng has to boost it home ON FOOT, without food, to get manpower to rescue them, which takes a minimum of a few days likely without any food or sleep
no appreciation or thanks for doing that since brother was more heroic and killed the 400-year-old monster
gets scolded by his father for being annoyed by this
parents immediately get into another fight about father loving wwx more than jc
because of the above shenanigans their sect is targeted next
tries to defend brother against being whipped to death and/or having his hand cut off by mother
witnesses his entire sect being burned and murdered
loses both his parents
decides to sacrifice himself to save his brother's life, instead of dying he is tortured and has his golden core melted
on top of his inferiority issues, the ONE THING he was expected to do was be the sect leader for the yunmeng jiang. the sect that no longer exists. he is now a sect leader with no sect and no golden core. no shit he wants to mcfuckin die
miraculously gets a new golden core but loses his brother
immediately plunged into a war and he's only like 17
spends 3 months trying to find his brother only for his brother to show up doing the Forbidden Magic and necromancy which is Super Disrespectful in their culture like holy shit what are you doing
brother refuses to use his sword in favour of the Forbidden Magics and kind of keeps undermining jc's orders as sect leader which makes jc look weak in front of all the other sect leaders when he's actively trying to rebuild their sect and be respected as a leader
fights a war for [handwaves] an amount of time, certainly a few years minimum, while watching his brother descend further into Unhealthy Behaviour but brother refuses to do anything or talk about it
ends up lowkey being a war hero
the other three great sects (of which there are now only four) swear brotherhood, leaving out ONLY ymj/jiang cheng, which, what the Fuck dude
is now a teenager who has lost his parents who now has to rebuild his sect from scratch with fuck all money, supplies, and support
brother, who promised to always be at his side helping, is not helping, and in fact is actively just getting drunk and being a nuisance and STILL REFUSING TO SAY WHY
entire cultivation world starts to turn on his brother who is now looking like a loose cannon bc he has Forbidden Magics that are Terrifyingly Powerful and also it has been proven that he does not give a fuck about jc's opinion since he's constantly doing whatever the fuck he wants
literally out of nowhere said brother decides to piss off everyone, start fights, and then KILL JIN GUARDS at a camp and MAKE OFF with like fifty people who are part of the family that he just fought a war against and were responsible for slaughtering his family/sect
go to the terrifying haunted mountain where wwx and the wen remnants are and sees that he's essentially starting a new family with a kid and crops, doesn't seem to care that jiang cheng is still trying to keep the ymj afloat and look like they have any strength
brother is still doing Forbidden Magic and refuses to explain why, and now says he'll secede from the ymj so his bad reputation doesn't reflect on jc like he HASNT BEEN DOING THAT THE WHOLE TIME
so now shixiong wants to just abandon jc completely after jc has lost his parents, had to rebuild everything from scratch, while ignoring the promise he's made their whole life? ok fuck you
jc also can't defend him in public because that would turn the ymj into a target and please keep in mind he is a teenager who was expected to do this ONE THING by his parents and he has poured his heart and soul and blood and tears into rebuilding the ymj and they are So Vulnerable Right Now
uhhh what the fuck suddenly wwx kills their sister's husband ?? bro what the FUCK?
everyone rallies to go and attack wwx for this and again jc literally cant do anything about it and refusing to go will just make everyone assume he's on wwx's side and their sect can't afford to be attacked rn

so jc spends over a decade raising his nephew ALONE while trying to make ymj powerful and also hunting/killing demonic cultivators that now p much only exist bc his brother invented/popularised the technique
oh yeah and also this whole time the guy who maybe hated his brother is now like EVEN colder and more antagonistic towards jc like it was HIS FAULT that wwx is dead? get fucked lan wangji you didnt even like the guy (or if this is cql/untamed canon: you literally did nothing either so where do you get off on acting like you're better than jc)
over a decade passes and suddenly his dead brother is alive again and causing more problems and acting like the things he did were not major contributors towards jc's entire family and sect dying
More Political Drama Happens and jc has to manage it
suddenly its revealed that the guy he's been co-raising his nephew with is the major villain who caused the entire world to turn on wwx in the first place oh and also it turns out that the fucking miraculous core jc has IS HIS BROTHER'S, WHO NEVER SAID ANYTHING, AND THIS IS THE REASON HE STARTED THE FORBIDDEN MAGICS AND STOPPED HELPING AROUND THE SECT, but he didnt even BOTHER to tell jiang cheng about it
by the way did i mention this was done via an entirely unconsented experimental surgery
and now the brother of the doctor who did the unconsented experimental surgery is ?? mad at jiang cheng about it ???? like he was supposed to KNOW ABOUT THIS when wwx was KEEPING IT FROM HIM ON PURPOSE???
and now theyre all nearly dying in this dumbass temple - and the ONE family member jc still has is literally being threatened with a garotte
oh cool now jc's brother is saying forget the past let's just leave it all behind !!! as though THAT ISNT JC'S ENTIRE LIFE AND TRAUMA and the ONE THING he EVER wanted was for him, wwx, and jyl to be alive and happy, and now wwx is saying just forget it! like FUCK YOU???? does jc truly mean NOTHING???????
oh and now his brother is off gallivanting with the guy who hated him - who it turns out doesn't hate him - and now they're getting married
and jiang cheng is meant to just. pretend all of this never happened and live his life normally. while wwx is out there. being happy and married.
like... if you can read all of this and still treat jc like he's the bad guy, i'm sorry, but you have literally zero empathy. dude had it probably more rough than any of the other main ensemble cast, and i am including jgy in that, because jgy Made His Choices. jc literally just had to let things happen around him helplessly

1. Looking for a post 1st seige burial mounds fic on ao3. It was a wip but it's been awhile so may no longer be the case. In it jc only participated in the siege as a cover to get close enough to his brother w/out endangering lotus pier. Since he leads the charge he finds wwx first and when wwx passes out after destroying the seal jc fakes wwx's death and smuggle him back to lotus pier & hides/kinda imprison him. But the longer they're together the more jc realizes a lot of the things he blamed wwx for aren't adding up (seeing through Jin manipulations).
Jc also forgot/didn't know about ayuan so when wwx wakes up he freaks out about where his baby adopted son is, but by the time jc gets back to bm yuan is no where to be found (implied lz had already got him) but jc and wwx think this means yuan is dead. Wwx is very depressed and becomes Jin ling's secret nanny whenever the kid is at lotus pier. In the most recent updates (at the time) a baby xue yang was introduced.
He saw a disguised wwx in a hidden area by lotus pier playing in the water and is basically like 'I'm cute and small too' and plots how to get himself adopted so he can also be pampered like the wealthy kid. I think there were some alternating povs. Might of been a Lan pov too, creating dramatic irony since both yuan and wwx are alive but neither side knows? Was setting up yunmeng bro reconciliation.

He is still captured by the Wen clan and thrown into the grave hill.He believes he lost the baby because of this and uses his resentful energy to survive and get revenge.
When he reaches the part at the end of the campaign where the sun falls, he goes into labor without knowing that he is still pregnant.

If I remember right, it was only one chapter, set mostly in the Untamed universe because Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning had worked together to make it seem like he was dead for the Wens after being locked in with that dog, but he was grabbed too early and basically paraded in front of the other disciples under the belief that he was dead. 14. Hi! For fic finder: I am looking for a canon-era fic where cultivators have golden blood and regular people have red blood. When Wei Wuxian loses his core his blood fades to red, which means he has to work harder to hide his wounds or they will give away his core-less state. I particularly remember the scene where Jiang Cheng stabs him in their “mock” fight WWX hides his wound with a cloak. He takes to covering up his body fully from head to toe to avoid showing any scrapes. Then after he is revived and Jiang Cheng whips him he purposefully shows the red blood to “prove” he isn’t WWX, then I think the core reveal happens when Jin Ling stabs him and everyone knows its him and they see the red blood too. 15. I need help finding a fic, I didn’t get too far into it but I really want to finish it. I think it was a longer fic and I think it’s well known and/or already in a comp or itmf answer. I i remember is that the summary put wwx as a temporary head of the Jiang Clan, from the first few chapters I think he’s tricked/strong armed into this position by JC. 16. Hello! For the next fic finder I have two fics:
A) the only thing I remember about this fic is that it deals with the "do not speak with Wei Ying" rule. Lan Wangji was really angry when he found out and was about to go yell at his uncle, but Wei Wuxian kept trying to stop him. I remember Wwx threw himself into a pond or down a hill or something to snap Lwj out of it? I don't remember anything else about the fic unfortunately.
B) vampire au where Wwx was a vampire and the lans hunted the supernatural I think? Wangxian had to work together to stop some evil thing. I remember Wwx's backstory was something like: Wen Chao captured him and locked him in a room with a vampire, thinking it would result in Wwx dying (cultivators couldn't be turned into vampires, they would just die). But Wwx had given up his core so he got turned and Wen Chao locked him in a house with Wen Ning. There was a fire and Wwx turned Wen Ning to save his life. I also remember a scene where Wwx tried to go into Cloud Recesses, but the wards wouldn't let him. He thought this meant Lwj wanted nothing to do with him, but it was just Lan Xichen updating the wards or something.

i’m not going into detail over their similarities but most people get the idea— brothels, yqy/lxc, spite, villainous antagonists that didn’t deserve what they were put through as a child, late start in cultivation, cunning personality, etc etc

yea.
let me start: shen jiu, one day, is gifted a high quality book set from one of his brothel jiejies when visiting them. at first, shen jiu had no plans to legitimately read them (mostly due to a lack of leisure time), but he eventually got to reading it when he was on a qian cao-mandated break after a qi deviation.
he gets hooked. when SJ is nearing the end of the novel, his thoughts are as followed: JGS deserved to get castrated and his limbs thrown to the endless abyss— WWX, although he was absolutely shameless, he was at least competent— LWJ was a fool for being so in love, but he was moral and loyal— and lan xichen…
an ache forms in shen jiu’s heart whenever he thinks about him. lxc, a man with a gentle, pacifistic, amiable personality who believed in what was right all the way until the end. he wholeheartedly supported and trusted his sworn brother, jin guangyao, until he couldn’t anymore.
shen jiu was touched. lan xichen, that man, had wasted all his efforts on an irredeemable monster. in a similar fashion, yue qingyuan was doing the same.
as for meng yao… shen jiu resented him. he had a loving mother, one who worked so hard for his happiness, only to squander all her efforts. meng yao… had what shen jiu envied the most in the newest disciple he just brought in. luo binghe. imo, it would be a clear sign of shen jiu’s self hatred projected onto meng yao. he sees the two of them as the hopeless scum of society, too broken to be loved. they were “charity cases” that couldn’t be fixed, no matter what.
soon after shen jiu finishes the novel, he falls into a qi deviation (the very same one that shen yuan transmigrated into) and dies. through some time space dimension jumping, shen jiu lands into the body of one 14 yo meng yao. and that’s just the beginning of his story.
shen jiu starts out by practicing cultivation in secret. meng yao’s body, although he is no prodigy, would definitely benefit from practicing from a younger age. then he gets to planning. with how shen jiu is, he would not step a foot in the karp tower, with a system or not. like, just no. i believe he’d set JGS on fire if he ever had to see the guy. the only plot point shen jiu intends on fulfilling is saving lan xichen, and then living a comfortable life away from the jianghu.
but within a year of living with meng shi in the brothel, shen jiu grows attached to her. he *wants* to make her proud, even if he wasn’t her real son. he was a total impostor. but even so, he didn’t want her legacy to be tainted by the actions of jin guangyao— who was now still meng yao, who is now shen jiu. but he doesn’t want to go to the jin sect. after an arduous process of actual communication with someone for a long time, meng shi realizes that the jin sect wouldn’t be good for her son, and jin guangshan wouldn’t help her *or* meng yao. the night before meng shi dies, she tells shen jiu that she loves him, regardless of whether he may fulfill her dreams.
aaaand, after that, shen jiu buries meng shi. he makes enough money as an artist (in secret, with his skillset from qing jing) to give her the proper burial rites. after that, he runs away. shen jiu finds a job as an assistant to an artist who sold fans and paintings in caiyi town. through his job, he meets NHS first, when he’s on his first year of being st the cloud recesses. surprisingly, shen jiu and nie huaisang have a friendship that… isn’t too bad. shen jiu is amiable, shows off the different fans he’s painted, and nie huaisang eagerly buys all of them. nie huaisang also buys out shen jiu’s other works, like his poetry and short stories. that day, with shen jiu’s qiankun pouch full, he treats himself to tanghulu.
the second encounter with nie huaisang brought along jiang cheng and wei wuxian. at that point in time, they were investigating the waterborne abyss problem. shen jiu, a year older now, shows nie huaisang his “new” invention: the war fan. wei wuxian is absolutely delighted at the new invention, and jiang cheng, although less excited that WWX, is considerably impressed as well. as for NHS, well, words can’t describe his happiness. shen jiu, on a whim, gifts it to him for free— mockingly thanking NHS for being such a generous patron. nie huaisang, unable to contain his excitement anymore, jumps on shen jiu and embraces him dramatically. this causes such a commotion, lan wangji comes over. with his brother.

Todays thoughts!
Wangxian meeting at the mall, single mom wwx shopping for some clothes with his little radish.
Wei Ying had gone to the mall cause he needed to buy a nice outfit for a date he did not want to go to, but of course his shijie was the one to set it up for him. Something about being time for him to put himself out there, find someone to take care of him as much as he takes care of his son. He, of course, insisted that he was fine fairing on his own. If anything, the reason why Wei Ying didn't want to date at all is more of finding someone that would put the same love and dedication to A-Yuan as he does.
And he knows, from experience, that's hard if not impossible to find.
So cut to a very stressed and distracted Wei Ying looking through clothes while his son played hide and seek in the racks of clothes. He'd been making sure to see A-Yuan popping his head out through the clothesline with a bright smile that matches his own, every so often calling out to him if he noticed he was taking too long to pop out. At least one of them was having fun. This was the third clothing store he visited, and the frustration of not finding anything remotely nice, or something that matched his style, was taking its toll. At the end, he sighs with exasperation. He'll just have to call his sister and tell her that he's sick, or something.
"A-Yuan, come out. We're leaving." There's no response, "A-Yuan, did you hear me?"
His brows dip with concern, it did get too quiet at some point. The giggling and the scraping of the hangers had come to a stop without him noticing. "Mister, if you're playing a joke on your poor A-Niang we won't get ice cream." He mumbles as he looks through the rack, moving the clothes around in mild panic. A-Yuan is nowhere to be found.
Wei Ying is practically panicking at this point, frantically searching for his son, practically yelling his name. He's on the verge of tears as he passes the rows and rows of racks and fixtures. All logic and reason are thrown out the window. There's no way.. there's no way he lost A-Yuan. He's always paid attention, always told him to stay by his side no matter what. What the hell is he going to do? The worst scenarios start crossing through his mind, but he keeps searching. A-Yuan knows to stay put if he ever gets separated from Wei Ying, he knows to not talk to strangers but he's only a toddler. Anything can happen.
“A-Yuan! Where are you?!” Wei Ying calls as he jogs through the store.

Cut to A-Yuan staring wide eye at a tall guy with honey eyes. They're both having a staring contest at this point. That’s not his A-Nian, A-Yuan thinks to himself.
"Hello?" Lan Zhan says with caution. When did this child get here?
The child pursed his lips, slowly retreating into the rack with blue sweaters he was browsing through. "I-I’m not supposed to talk to strangers."
Lan Zhan blinks, staying quiet before nodding in approval. The toddler's parents are smart. He should probably alert security, he looks around in search of security or a staff member. As soon as he spots someone, he starts to walk away to try and get their attention but a small hand takes a tight grip on his light cream trousers.
"W-Wait! Mister— My a-niang told me to stay put if I ever get separated... A-niang will find me soon. Please, don't go."
Scared pleading eyes stare at him, the man seems to think through it for a moment. The smart thing to do would be to report the missing child. But at the same time, he's not sure how he would handle the situation if the toddler were to start crying.
"Alright.” He agrees with a nod. Though, the toddler doesn't let go of his trousers for a moment. At least he looks somewhat more calm. "We'll wait for your mother together."
Not a moment later, Wei Ying runs past them, yelling A-Yuan's name. At first, Lan Zhan looks at him with confusion. The child didn't say anything about his dad looking for him, so instinctively he shields and conceals the toddler. You can never be too safe, he knows people can put any sort of act just to take a child away. However, the toddler scrambled past Lan Zhan's legs and shouts, “A-Niang!"
Wei Ying skids to a stop, whipping his head towards the sound of his son's voice. Relief floods through his body as he falls to his knees and hugs his toddler, so glad that he's safe and sound. At first he doesn't notice the man who had stayed with his son because he's too busy peppering kisses to A-Yuan's chubby cheeks and mumbling "Don't ever scare me like that again!" And “We've talked about this, don't leave my side."
While this exchange is happening, Lan Zhan Is just thinking. The man... that drop dead gorgeous man was the toddler's mother?
A-Yuan clings to Wei Ying's neck, rubbing his face on his cheek, “A-Yuan is sorry, A-niang. Please don't be mad."
The puppy eyes win Wei Ying over and he can't be mad anymore. Silver eyes quickly scan his child, making sure there’s no injuries. He hugs his little radish once more, only then is when he notices the man watching the whole scene, and he can tell he's kinda not knowing what to do with himself.
"Um... can I help you?" Wei Ying asks a little defensive while hugging his son closer.
Before the man can utter an answer, A-Yuan beams with excitement. “That gege helped A-Yuan wait for A-niang!"
“Oh. Is that so?" He says, silver eyes softening and shoulders letting the tension leave.
"Mn. My name is Lan Zhan." He introduced himself and woah, how could Wei Ying not notice how handsome this man was.
“Thank you, Lan Zhan, for keeping an eye on my son. I really don't know how to repay you…”
"A-niang, is this the gege you're meeting later?" The toddler looked at Lan Zhan with hopeful eyes. "Gege taking my a-niang to dinner?"
Wei Ying quickly gets all embarrassed, cheeks flushed red like the ribbon holding his long hair in a ponytail. “Aiya, aiya! Stop bothering the nice gege! I'm sure he has many things to do."
"But!” A-Yuan begins to protest with a pout.
"No buts." Wei Ying picks A-Yuan in his arms, letting some of his weight rest on his hip. Silver eyes meet honey ones. “Thank you, again. I-I gotta get going."
And Lan Zhan can only watch the pair walking away, saying something about "I told you to call me a-niang at home and baba out here." And "I'm never leaving you out of my sight again. You gave me a heart attack.”
He’s sure he hears the child, A-Yuan, mumble “But I like that gege…”
Lan Zhan turns around, shaking his head before continuing his shopping. His chest aches a bit cause he just met the most beautiful man he has ever laid eyes on... It's childish, but he can't help but quietly sulk because he was in fact thinking of asking him out but... it looks like someone had beaten him to it. Wait, he didn't even get his name. He sulks even more.

Back in Wei Ying's home, he was getting ready for his date. It shouldn't be too late to cancel, right?
“You look dashing!” His sister compliments with a soft clap. “Come now, don’t make that face.”
“Jie, I don’t know this man… What if he doesn’t like A-Yuan? What if he’s secretly an asshole?” Anxiety was clear in his voice, though it was quickly soothed when Jiang Yanli walked over and fixed the collar of his burgundy button up.
“You doubt your A-Jie will pick a good man for you?” She teases with a thin eyebrow raising in question.
“Not you… I don’t trust A-Sang.” He side-eyes his friend, who is sitting on the couch making faces to his baby nephew. “Are you sure it’s not too late to cancel?”
“A-Ying, you need this. I promise it’ll be good for you.” His sister reassures, gently patting his shoulders. She smiles softly at her younger brother. “I want you to be happy.”
“I am happy.” He reassures her
She chuckles, patting the top of his hand. “You know what I mean. YingYing, are you sure you don’t want me to watch over A-Yuan?”
“Nuh-huh, if I’m meeting this guy then he’s meeting a-yuan too. If he doesn’t love him then I won’t even give him a chance!”
“A-Ying.”
“I’ve made up my mind, Jie. Now, tell me A-Yuan doesn’t look like the most adorable gentleman you’ve ever seen.” Wei Ying coos as his son walks into the living room wearing a t-shirt with the print of a tuxedo. He picks him up and peppers his cheeks with many kisses.
Soon, they’re both arriving at the restaurant. At least the guy he’s meeting has good taste. Before they step in, Wei Ying sets down his son, going through the motions of fixing his clothes. “If you don’t like the guy, we’ll leave as soon as you want, okay? No one can pull my attention from my little radish.”
A-Yuan nods, and with that they both walked into the bustling restaurant. Wei Ying couldn’t help but to feel irritated at bit his sister and best friend. What the hell did Nei Huaisang mean that I’ll know when I see him? Would’ve been better if he just showed me a picture. He thinks to himself while rolling his eyes. Though, he couldn’t deny he was extremely nervous to meet this mystery guy that he had been set up with.
“A-Niang, look! It’s the nice gege from earlier!”
Wei Ying is quick to follow his son’s line of sight, and there he was. Lan Zhan sat at a tsks closer to the window, dressed up in a light blue suit with a light cream shirt. He knew Lan Zhan was handsome, but to see him in a suit? How the sleeves seemed hug his arms just tight enough to let you know the man works out. Before he knew it, Wei Ying was being tugged towards Lan Zhan’s table. “Hey, hey! Baobei let’s not bother the nice gege, he’s probably waiting for someone.” He tried to whisper, tugging his son the other way but they were already spotted.
“Gege! Hi gege!” A-Yuan chimes as Lan Zhan stands from his chair. Was he always this tall?
“Hi, Lan Zhan. What a coincidence! A-Are you here by yourself, or…”
He can see golden eyes scanning him up and down before landing back on his face. He can’t help but shift in place at the intensity of Lan Zhan’s gaze. “I am waiting for someone.” Lan Zhan responds quietly, gaze still on Wei Ying.
“Oh… Me too!” He’s quick to add before chuckling, “Well, you already knew that… A-Are you waiting for a date?”
Lan Zhan seems to consider his answer, and Wei Ying can’t help but to find it amusing at how deflated and defeated the other looks when he responds with a quiet “Yes.”
Wei Ying laughs once more, “Not really looking forward to it? I get it, my sister and best friend set me up for mine. I don’t even know who I’m supposed to meet! Can you believe they refused to give me his name? Or even show me a picture? They really took the definition of ‘blind date’ way too serious.”
Lan Zhan stares at him wide eye, and for a moment Wei Ying thinks he said something wrong. “No offense to whoever you’re meeting, of course! I bet they’re—“
“Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan takes a step closer towards him, but he doesn’t see himself taking a step back.
Brows furrow, “Yeah? Do… Do I have something on my face?”
“I’m meeting with Wei Ying… You are Wei Ying.”
The father can only look at the other in bewilderment, was… was Lan Zhan his blind date? No, this was to good to be true. A guy like Lan Zhan… he could have anyone, the man looked like a god! “Who set you up?” He decided to ask, if he’s says ut was Nei Huaisang then he really was having a date with Lan Zhan. There were no other Wei Ying’s around, not that he knows of.
Wei Ying can tell Lan Zhan is having the same train of thought. “My brother… He was convinced by a family friend that I should… attempt to meet new people.”
“Was it Nie Huaisang? Oh my god! That asshole set everything up!” Wei Ying exclaims once Lan Zhan confirms his suspicions, hands brushing the already messy bangs from his face, a loud laugh echoing through the restaurant. He winced, tho, when people enjoying their food shoot a glare at him. “I can’t believe this…Wait, if you knew my name, why didn’t you say anything earlier.”
Lan Zhan pressed his lips together before answering. “You did not give me your name.”
“Oh— I… Huh, I was really distracted. It would’ve made things easier for the both of us, huh?” Wei Ying smiles at him. “Well… mind if we join you, then? My treat, since you were my hero earlier and I must repay your kindness and patience!”
“Are we having dinner with the nice gege??” A-Yuan suddenly chimes, wide eyes darting between the two adults. Wei Ying smiles as he ruffles his hair.
“We sure are!”
“I knew it! The Nice gege is taking my a-niang for dinner!” The toddler soon clings to Lan Zhan’s leg, which caught him off guard.
“Aiya, A-Yuan! Where are your manners?” Wei Ying chides playfully, attempting to pull his son back to his side.
“I do not mind.” Lan Zhan responds with a smile ghosting over his lips.
The three of them sit at the table. Wei Ying talks away about anything and everything, and Lan Zhan pays full attention to every single word, attention unflinching. It especially melts his heart when Lan Zhan gives the same type of attention to A-Yuan, listening with much seriousness to all the stories he has to tell. He looks at both of them with so much fondness that he feels his heart bursting at the seams. Yeah… it was good he decided to not cancel the date.

Lan Wangji looks down at Xuanyu, her face slack in sleep, and tries to reconcile the conflicting emotions he's been doing his best to avoid.
Despite how she'd curled around him the morning after they'd had sex, she's returned to keeping herself to her half of the bed without complaint. It's been over a week, and besides his brother's teasing and one dinner with a red faced Sizhui, nothing has changed. Xuanyu spends her days reading or meditating or sparring. The latter tends to gather a crowd of spectators these days, because in spite of Xuanyu's lack of power, she has an abundance of skill. She often abandons traditional cultivation style to resort to dirty street tricks more commonly seen in wandering cultivators, but it's hard to argue with the results when she's the victor nine times out of ten.
He should be grateful.
Xuanyu is living as she had since their marriage, asking nothing of him and completely apart from him except for sitting next to him at meals and falling asleep beside him at night.
When Lan Wangji had agreed to this marriage, he had not given thought to what sort of husband he would be.
Now, after months of ignoring his wife in spite of Sizhui’s affection for her to the point that she attempted to throw herself off a cliff, disregarding her injuries and abandoning her after their spar, and getting drunk only to nearly immediately demand her virtue, it turns out that the answer is he’s a terrible husband by almost all metrics.
Maybe that shouldn’t bother him. He never wanted this marriage. But it seems as if Xuanyu didn’t either, and he at least chose this. All evidence points to Jin Guangshan forcing her into this role. He at least volunteered.
What has she done to deserve his ire? His staunch disinterest? She’s treated his son with nothing but kindness, been courteous to the disciples, made a show of following the rules of the sect she married into, and has asked him for nothing.
Her greatest sin is not being Wei Wuxian.
This too is hardly her fault. Still, it’s a near insurmountable thing, that she is in his bed and on his arm and is not the only person he’s ever loved.
His grief is not her fault. Even he can’t bring himself to put any blame on her for Wei Wuxian’s death when she was still a child during the war and those terrible years after.
The sun shifts, shining through the window and landing across her face. It wakes her as it does every morning and she scrunches her nose before her eyes slowly open.
She meets his gaze squarely for one moment, then two, then she groans and covers her face with her arm. “You have to stop doing this. It’s weird.” She peeks out from under her arm. “Are you drunk again?”
“I need help with something,” he says, forcing it out before he can change his mind.
Xuanyu pushes herself to sitting, her eyebrows pushed together in concern. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
He holds out his hand. “Can you put this on for me?”
She stares down at the forehead ribbon in his hand. Her wide eyes and trembling bottom lip that she catches between her teeth tell him she knows what it means. “Are you sure?”
No. “Yes.”
Xuanyu’s brilliant smile in response is worth the terror and anxiety and uncertainty. He doesn’t think she’s ever smiled at him quite like this before, so much warmer than her teasing grins.
She’s his wife.
He owes it to her to at least try to be a husband in more than name.

Royal AU where WWX and A-Yuan both survive the birth. It's a rough one, but A-Yuan is healthy and very clearly LWJ's son, and they're both quickly whisked away to the (hastily-prepared) Empress's and Crown Prince's rooms to recover.
WWX seems to be recovering. Slowly, but getting there. He wasn't precisely in the best of health while imprisoned - damp air, lack of exercise, low-quality food, general stress. And A-Yuan hadn't been positioned well, prolonging the labor, but they made it through!
LWJ dotes on them both, spending almost all his free time with A-Yuan or often with A-Yuan and WWX. WWX is exhausted, hurt, and wary - LWJ is trying to reconcile with him, earn back his trust and love. Part of it is showing that yes, he is a doting father and he's trying to be an attentive husband, and he's very sorry about what happened, but he's here now. Now that WWX and A-Yuan have survived the birth and seem to be recovering, LWJ has all the time in the world to make it up to WWX.
It's almost a week after A-Yuan's birth that WQ reports that WWX has a fever. Nothing to worry about yet, it might just be the strain of childbirth. Also, WWX has been drinking and asking for spicy foods, all the 'warming' foods - it was probably just too much warming too soon.
Within days it's clear that it's not just a fever, it's a full-scale infection that's quickly turning septic. WWX is in constant pain, burning up, there's pus seeping out from between his legs. And LWJ, Emperor, one of the most powerful men in the world -
He can only sit at WWX's bedside and hold his hand, like he should have over a week ago. A-Yuan is kept away for his safety, but LWJ is a healthy adult, and he's the Emperor. Who's going to stop him if he decides to finally be there for his wife?
One day the fever seems to finally go down, and WWX is suddenly happy and relieved to find that LWJ had been with him the whole time. They talk for a while about how A-Yuan is doing, and how WWX feels better now. Soon WWX falls asleep, still holding LWJ's hand to his chest.
It's only when WWX's hand grows cold that LWJ realises WWX isn't breathing.

I wanted to ask if you know what's canon about Wei Wuxian's parents? I know Cangse Sanren shaving LQR's beard is a thing but I'm not sure about other information I've seen
Like, is it canon that she attend the lectures at the same time young masters did and met JFM and Wei Changze (if he even attended) there? Was JFM really in love with her or is that a rumor Madam Yu believes? Was he trying to court her in his youth? Did wwx's parents elope before or after jfm married? What kind of servant was Wei Changze, something similar to Madam Yu's servants, who have a low status but can fight or did he not fight much at all
I know there's very little information about them and the novel is long but you seem very knowledgeable so I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask if you know the answers to some of these 😅 Of course you don't have to answer all of them, I have no idea if they even can be answered with available information, I hope I'm not being too bothersome!

Hello anon!! I had to take some time to think about it, but I think I have some answers for you.
So what’s specifically canon about Cangse-Sanren and Wei Changze? Well…
We know that she descended from Baoshan-sanren’s mountain as a young woman and met Jiang Fengmian and got along decently well with him, but fell in love with Wei Changze and eloped with him before Jiang Fengmian married Yu Ziyuan or even seemed to be clan leader. We know that she and Wei Changze were nomadic, they traveled around together with a donkey and they later had a baby boy, our dear Wei Wuxian before dying on a nighthunt together near Yiling when Wei Ying was five.
There’s not really a lot that’s known in story, and some of the details repeated are either pretty clearly made up (in the past, no one but Yu Ziyuan, her best friend and her best friend’s son ever make mention of Jiang Fengmian having feelings for Cangse-sanren) but it’s pretty clear from what little we do get is that she was a woman who loved her family, who laughed, who taught her son how to not hold grudges because it would let him fly free, and seemed to be a good, caring person. As for what kind of servant Wei Changze was, there’s just so little about him in the story that we can never be sure. Whatever his role was, he seemed to be able to learn to be a cultivator and became a rogue cultivator with his wife.
As for the parts with her shaving Lan Qiren’s beard, that is pretty much just MXTX talking about things she knew about the characters that had no room in the story. Basically the reason why Lan Qiren holds a grudge is because he, Wei Changze and Jiang Fengmian all went on a nighthunt that went very wrong in part to him being exceptionally rigid, she came in and saved all their lives, then shaved off his beard for putting them in danger. Which is really quite the chain of events there.
They are very interesting for what little we get of them, but there is very little to be gotten. They are fragments of ghosts in Wei Wuxian’s memory, people who he still cares about and misses, but doesn’t remember all that well. Most character details we get are from brief thoughts or Wei Wuxian’s fragmented memories. That being said, they probably were very good parents to him for the short time he had them and the things they were able to impart carried him through both lifetimes.

How can I pick only one? 😭😭😭 but please tell me about imperial grandmother :chinhands:
Basic concept came from one of those “okay but what if WWX did have fancy ancestry” brainstorms, eventually leading to WCZ having been an imperial prince, but as a young child, he was kidnapped to be ransomed and eventually lost. Now, years later, the empire is going through a succession crisis, and the empress dowager bets on finding her lost child, her grandchild, to maintain her position in court.
The point of this being mainly that suddenly WWX does have blood family, and while loved, he’s also very much treated as a pawn, using his own status, playing along to his grandmother’s plans, to ensure the safety of the Wen Remnant:
“My son, treated as a servant!” The empress dowager snarled. Like this, Wei Wuxian could almost see her resemblance to him. Despite her old age, she looked nothing like kind and hurt Granny Wen or even the strict but welcoming Sect Leader Yu.
The empress dowager, his grandmother, was all biting anger.
“Tell me, my son’s wife, was she a servant too?”
Wei Wuxian bristled. Sure enough, the empress dowager spoke like someone of her station, belittling everyone beneath her.
“My mother was a disciple of Baoshan Sanren.”
At that, the empress dowager looked at least a little impressed. As separate as the cultivation clans kept themselves from the emperor’s court, it wasn’t as though they were entirely without knowledge.
“And her name?”
“Cangse Sanren.”
The empress dowager didn’t roll her eyes, but she used her fan to make a move just as dismissive. “I asked her name.”
And Wei Wuxian paused. He’d heard it, once at least, he was sure. But Uncle Jiang and Madam Yu had been screaming at each other and it had been awful and after— Wei Wuxian had not dared to ask.
And he only had the one memory of his parents. He didn’t want to seem unfilial by needing to ask his mother’s name. If she didn’t give it out readily so that people spoke it, then it must have been dear to her heart.
Should he lie? Pretend it was a secret that wasn’t meant to be spoken?
He looked away from the empress dowager, let his gaze rest on the meal she had provided. It was the best Yiling could offer and she’d still turned her nose up at it.
“I do not know,” said Wei Wuxian. “I wasn’t told”.
Silence followed his admission, then the empress dowager sighed. Unlike every other expression of her so far - rage, disregard, dismissiveness - this just sounded tired.
“Wei Wuxian, look at me.”
He raised his head and for the first time, the woman in front of him seemed like more than a spoiled noble so far removed from the realities of life.
“I can only say this once, so listen well. I am sorry, child. You shouldn’t have been deprived of your parents. It pains me to see didn’t know your father any more than I got the chance to.”
She raised her hand and put it on Wei Wuxian’s cheek, the gesture strangely maternal. His eyes stung and he wanted to blame the fumes of the dishes beneath him on the table.
“You have my son’s eyes, you have mine. We shall learn what your mother gave you in the future.”
Wei Wuxian imagined this woman, dressed in all her riches, standing in front of the Cloud Recesses, demanding that Lan Qiren tell her all about the person he loathed most; it was enough to make him grin. “I don’t think people will want to speak about her.”
His grandmother opened her fan. “I am empress dowager, who would dare denying me? Now tell me about your Wen.”

The line of his mouth flattened. “Xichen-ge?” “Yes, yes, your brother, the First Jade of Lan, the sect leader, a good friend of mine,” the man replied, waving his hand with the words. “A good friend,” Lan Wangji said and wished desperately that the sourness in him could not be heard through his voice. Brother had not mentioned their relationship was this close.

...Not that it mattered. Wei Wuxian could spend his time smiling at any disciple he wanted or calling Lan Xichen familiarly as much as he wished. It was no business of Lan Wangji’s.

“I’ve been spoiled rotten, I know,” Wei Ying said, and then his voice softened into something almost too gentle: “I just miss my husband very much.”
Lan Wangji’s fingers tightened around the box of buns until there was a small crack. For a long moment, he felt like the only thing he could hear was the blood rushing in his ears. Then, he took a step forward. Another one. Like that, step by step, he left the voices of his brother and Wei Ying behind him, unable to focus on anything but the word ‘husband’ echoing in his mind, over and over.
Wei Ying was here to break a love curse. Wei Ying had worked tirelessly for months, looking through spells and curses and making notes, like his life depended on it. Wei Ying had ignored his own health in order to work more, work faster.
Wei Ying had pulled back the moment he’d noticed Lan Wangji’s feelings. Like he hadn’t wanted to give him hope. Because he had a husband.
Something ugly and desperate in Lan Wangji wanted to confess, still. Wanted to make Wei Ying know, wanted to make him consider the life Lan Wangji could give him.
He’d sleep with him every night, would bring him breakfast, would hold him whenever he so wished. Brush his hair in the evenings, buy him anything he wanted, take him
night-hunting, love him and cherish him and give him his absolute, unwavering devotion. He would give Wei Ying anything he asked, if only – But marital vows were ones not taken lightly. That someone else had been lucky enough to be the first vying for his attentions
successfully, could Lan Wangji blame him for it? And this person was someone dear to Wei Ying. Someone whose death Wei Ying had prevented, who Wei Ying tirelessly wanted to cure to have back that married life he’d clearly loved.
The ache in his chest grew into a full-body feeling, raw nerve exposed to the world that did not fear cutting him.

Lan Wangji had fallen ill and lost memories months back, during the time that Wei Ying’s husband had been cursed. This timing, surely it was not a coincidence.

Not once had he considered the memories lost anything important. He had not realized a love this deep, this all-consuming could be taken from him. It felt like something integral already, a part of him that would, if taken, feel like a missing limb.
He had memories of Wei Ying from before. He had a life with this man he knew nothing of. He was married.
Lan Wangji buried his face in the side of Wei Ying’s neck, breathed in his scent, no longer restricted by his sense of propriety or the thoughts of other men getting to do it. There were months of frustration simmering under his skin. Had his self-control not been what it was, he might have surrendered to this need. Were they not married, after all? Was Wei Ying not his?

“I remember everything I should.”
Their first meeting. The first kiss, stolen during a hunt. The war, the fear, the death, and the resurrection. The sound of laughter breaking the monotony. The feel of soft lips against his. Three bows, not taken during a ceremony, and the three bows that were, when they’d been clad in red.
Each version of Wei Ying there had been, and each version of himself that had been there to witness them.
Wei Ying smiled at him, still. His love, his heart. “Good. And you better not forget.” He would not.

I think many jc antis and some jc fans don’t realize that Jiang Cheng is not just an angry callous man. He’s arguably the most sensitive character in mdzs.
He deserves to be seen through his hard exterior, because there’s something so interesting behind it. An angry man with no deeper thought would not keep Chenqing by his side for 13 years. No man with such little depth would cry and mourn at the golden core reveal and at the temple scene. His love and willingness to die for his nephew shows one of his best qualities: loyalty to family and his loved ones.
Him trying to help raise Jin Ling and treat him better than Jiang Cheng’s parents ever treated him is honorable. To be better than the parents who hit, humiliated, and neglected you- it’s a genuinely respectable thing. That takes character growth and reflection to be a better person, which can be hard especially in a case like Jc.
Jiang Cheng rebuilt lotus pier all by himself, yes he got support from the top clans, however he oversaw that everything was reconstructed and that the place could be a bright and functioning sect, even better before his fathers rule. By himself. That takes a certain level of devotion that I admire as well, and he doesn’t do it for greedy reasons like power like JGY, he does it because he’s been groomed to be the sect leader for so long, it’s basically a part of his personality now. And that in itself can be seen as another tragedy.
Btw the man was literally begging wwx to come back with him to lotus pier and to get rid of the wens, so that he could protect him, before things truly got out of hand “if you insist on protecting them I can’t protect you” That’s fear, that’s fear of another loss, the death of someone you care about. Also can we talk about how jc always knew he was second best to wwx? And hey he never was that angry with the man, never tried to push him down and make fun of him for being the son of a servant, he trusted and respected him. And I don’t think that was easy to do.
Also another thing. Jc never tried to hunt and kill or torture wwx. When he ran into him on the streets of that inn, he whipped wwx to stun him, and dragged him back to question him. Not even touching a hair on his head. He used fairy as a blocker, and did call him over to fuck with wwx, it wasn’t right but I get why he got pissed off. Wwx had made a…insensitive comment to say the least, because he was so used to messing with jc (and jc in turn) but forgot that things are very different now.
Also, jc never actually wanted to kill wwx when he saw him again, he whipped him to expel him out of mo xuanyu’s body because he thought he was possessing him and he did lash out at lotus pier but he tried to stop before it got any worse “Jiang Cheng didn’t really want to hit Lan WangJi, and immediately retracted his whip, but it was already too late.”
My point in writing all of this is that jc is not just an “angry bitter man”, he is man capable of warmth and forgiveness like how we see him forgive wwx in the temple after years of resenting him. It’s so easy for jc to just hate wwx, but he doesn’t, he says it himself “Why can’t I hate you?! Shouldn’t I hate you?!” The anger and hurt he’s fed for years are slowly losing its roots in his heart and he doesn’t know what to do except cry. This part of him, I think is too relatable. When you survive through expressing hurt as anger, when you have to deal with “you’ll never be good enough” I can understand and I wish others would acknowledge this type of canon

Absolutely begging for the trans WWX who’s living her best life as Lady Mo, I’m obsessed with this au
(Also I just want you to know there is now a crack version of this incredible au in my head where upon meeting “Lady Mo” playing Wangxian for Sizhui, Lan Zhan has a full on falls to his knees clutching WWX’s going “you’re as beautiful as the day I lost you” alla HTTYD 2, gets a dramatic (to Sizhui, read confused for WWX) “Lan Zhan!?” in response and the Lan Zhan (in an actual miracle of being able to communicate) goes “I raised A-Yuan all of these years for you, I’ve raised our son into a wonderful cultivator” (the miracle has ended, and WWX is currently bluescreening trying to connect the dots of teen I am traveling with is baby I loved what do you mean our son ooo wait Lan Zhan thinks I’m pretty!)
And thus creates the misunderstanding for Sizhui that “Lady Mo” is actually his apparently not-dead mom who’s apparently been vibing as a wandering musician for the past 13 years. Sizhui goes through the five stages of grief before settling on “I can work with this” as a-niang starts showering him with affection and apparently thought he was dead and thus began Sizhui’s grand scheme of luring his incredibly oblivious mother into marriage with his father and it becomes “unstoppable force vs unmovable object, second times the charm on baby trapping, right?” adventures.
This doesn’t matter but it’s important to me that you know this popped into my head. This au is absolutely incredible and there is so much comedy gold. NHS has been left alone in the group project but he still manages to scramble together enough to pass decently, good for him)

aaah I'm flattered to hear that!! and tbh, it's not so much that NHS has been left alone in the group project but that he decided on the project and then didn't call anyone to do their parts. never got to write it but i figured the whole reveal would go sth like this:
Gusu doesn't look like Wei Ying remembers it, but it has been decades since her attendance. After the war, well, for all that Lan Zhan had asked her to visit, she'd never accepted it.
And look at her now! Going to the Cloud Recesses voluntarily, accompanied by Lan Zhan's little juniors. They're good kids, polite and inquisitive and opinionated and so very alive. She wondered how much Lan Zhan must have changed in the last years to raise them this well.
What if Wei Ying doesn't recognize him at all? No, that can't be. Lan Zhan was too memorable for Wei Ying to ever forget a single detail about him.
"Just ahead now, Lady Mo," says Lan Sizhui. "I'm not sure if my father is home. He's taken to traveling more...."
He trails off, his face splitting into a smile as he looks ahead. "He's there!"
Wei Ying expects some unfamiliar Lan, but no, standing there is Lan Zhan. He looks older, refined, and happy at their return.
Oh, thinks Wei Ying. I always want him to look at me like that.
Playing the dizi isn't always for pleasure, especially chenqing, summoning all kinds of evil, but the song Lan Zhan taught him is like homecoming. Wei Ying watches in delight as Lan Zhan's eyes widen in recognition, she thinks.
The juniors look at her in wonder, but Wei Ying pulls the dizi from her lips with a smile.
"Lan Zhan!" she calls, "Lan Zhan, I heard you're walking around, clearing my name!" And then, just for pleasure, just for herself, she calls his name again. "Lan Zhan, I've been traveling! I've seen the world and it's alive."

Wei Ying can't place Lan Zhan's expression until it breaks into something hopeful, something grieving, something lost.

Secondly, I would like help to find a fic, from what I remember Wei Ying was drunk on the rooftop when someone approached. In his drunken state, he thinks it was Lan Wangji that showed up so he goes on saying things like are you here to punish me again. He also asks why Lan Wangji hates him so much, but the whole entire time it was actually Lan Xichen he was talking to. I think it takes place after he got punished for drinking in Cloud Recess, and then something happens and he almost falls off the roof but Lan Xichen catches him. Lan Wangji had apparently witnessed the whole thing and tried to apologize but Lan Xichen coldly tells him the apology should be given to Wei Ying instead when he wakes up.

18. So I’m looking for a specific fic that I know is on ao3, can’t remember the name of the story nor the author though.
And that’s after looking through my history on ao3 for over an hour.
All I really remember from it was that it was short, like one to ten chapters long.
(And yes I do consider 10 chapters short)
It took place in cloud recess study arc, jiang Cheng punched or got into a physical fight with Jin Zixuan, in the classroom if I remember correctly.
Wei wuxian was injured. Somehow, story could be after the waterborne abyss.

"What an interesting choice in melodies," Lan Qiren said, and Wei Wuxian startled so badly that he nearly dropped his flute.
Lan Qiren frowned slightly, but reached up to stroke his beard to cover it up. They'd had their disagreements, to be sure – he’d even thrown him out of one of the lessons on account of his shameless unorthodoxy, or perhaps more accurately Wei Wuxian had excused himself at Lan Qiren’s inadvertant encouragement – but he hadn't thought he had been so harsh on the boy in their first few classes to justify such an outsized reaction. Especially not from Wei Wuxian, who Jiang Fengmian was constantly praising as carefree and fearless, even reckless.
Of course, Wei Wuxian had been acting quite unusually these past few days...
There was a pretty self-explanatory reason for that, though.
"Teacher Lan!" Wei Wuxian exclaimed. "I wasn't expecting - I thought you'd gone to Qinghe at this time - uh, that is…"
"Important matters superseded," Lan Qiren said, omitting to mention that the 'important matter' in question was nothing more than a desire to observe Lan Wangji in the grips of what was very clearly his first real infatuation. 
For a long time, Lan Qiren had believed that he wouldn’t be able to recognize it when it happened. Lan Qiren ruefully reflected that he’d completely missed it when it was his brother suffering from love, and again when his nephews had both developed an unusual fondness for Nie Mingjue’s training lessons – he’d initially thought they were just curious about the ways other sects went about their cultivation, and only realized his error after Nie Mingjue had left…there had been so much sighing…at any rate, although Lan Xichen had managed to get most of the way through his adolescence without being struck by it, Lan Wangji clearly had. The signs were rather self-evident. Longing looks, excess thoughtfulness, smiles, and from his most reticent and self-contained nephew...
No, the evidence was clear: Lan Wangji was positively sick with love for Wei Wuxian.
In all honesty, Lan Qiren was relieved. 
He hadn’t thought he’d be – he’d been terrified of the day, in truth – but now that it was here, he was really, truly, genuinely relieved.
Perhaps Wei Wuxian was impertinent and insolent, arrogant and foolhardy, a terrible student who thought his genius excused him from having to learn discipline, but at least he was a proper orthodox cultivator from a Great Sect - a known quantity. He wasn't likely to tear off and start murdering people left and right. If he led Lan Wangji into trouble, it at least wouldn't be of the sort and severity that Lan Wangji’s doomed predecessor had entangled himself with. It might result in shame and embarrassment, but it wouldn’t bring him genuine harm or suffering.
No - in comparison to what it might have been?
This was fine.
Accordingly, Lan Qiren had determined with himself that he needed to improve his relationship with his prospective son-in-law immediately. After all, with cutsleeves, either one of them could choose to marry out, and Lan Qiren very much wanted Lan Wangji to remain with the Lan sect - and that meant getting Wei Wuxian to want to stay, too. 
Either way, it was far more important than yet another fruitless planning session with Nie Mingjue over the growing threat of the Wen sect.
(Do not tell lies, after all...)
"Did you come up with the melody yourself?" Lan Qiren prompted, seeing that Wei Wuxian was hunting for a safe subject of conversation.
Unfortunately, however innocuous musical cultivation was, that didn't seem to be it: Wei Wuxian abruptly flushed red. Lan Qiren hadn't even known the boy knew how to blush.
"Uh, no. It's...Lan Zhan made the tune. I was just...uh..."
"You were trying to apply spiritual energy to the tune to cause certain effects," Lan Qiren said, not bothering to make it a question - it was pretty obvious what Wei Wuxian had been trying to do - while inwardly marveling at how devoted his nephew was. To compose a song for a boy you'd known hardly more than a month...! Honestly, what was wrong with his family, that they fell in love so thoroughly, so quickly? "I'm not sure what you were aiming for, but if you’re hoping to achieve an orthodox song-spell, you're going about it backwards."
"...backwards?"
"Mm. You have already chosen the purpose you are aiming towards, and you are now trying to make the spiritual energy in the song reach that purpose, are you not? It will work if the song and the purpose happen to be naturally compatible, but that is a matter of luck, not skill. So while the brute force method can work, it’s inelegant and inefficient, and I wouldn’t recommend it."
Wei Wuxian was looking at Lan Qiren, bemused. "What would you recommend instead, Teacher Lan?"
Lan Qiren thought about the snippets of the song he’d heard for a moment, stroking his beard once more in thought, then, after having contemplated it, whistled one of the livelier sections of the tune, letting it find a more natural path. 
Flowers bloomed all around them.
“Songs associated with more joyous emotions are better for generation of spiritual energy,” he said, “while more melancholy ones can be grounding and settling. I wouldn’t use that particular tune as a means of calming ghosts unless you’re already familiar with them – you would need an already preexisting connection of friendship at the bare minimum before a love song would work as a lullaby.”
Wei Wuxian was staring at the flowers.
“It’s just an example,” Lan Qiren said, nodding at them. “As the person guiding the song, there are many options for what you could seek to achieve with it – for instance, you were seeking to use it as the basis of a summoning, weren’t you?”
“Well, yes…”
Lan Qiren whistled again, this time a different part of the song. Rabbits emerged from the bush around them, drawn in by the siren sound of the song and smell of fresh growth.
“The song is full of life, so it’s better for living creatures,” he said, and noted belatedly that he’d slipped into lecturing, which he hadn’t intended on. “Ah…at any rate, if you truly wish to use this particular song in night-hunting, I would recommend you use it for mo or yao, or for something originating in a place that is familiar with you, friendly to you – something in the Lotus Pier, in your case.”
Wei Wuxian was staring at him now.
Lan Qiren frowned at him. “What is it? I already know you’re familiar with the different between types of evil creatures, you demonstrated that quite well in class…”
“No, no, it’s not that!” Wei Wuxian said quickly, recovering. “I wasn’t aware that Teacher Lan was – actually, no, now that I think about it, it’s pretty obvious. Uh. It’s only, see, I was trying to do something a little…different with it – I don’t think Teacher Lan would approve –”
Ah, of course.
Lan Qiren sighed. “Is this your idea of manipulating resentful energy again? The song is completely inappropriate for that.”
Wei Wuxian stared at him, bug-eyed.
“Putting aside the issues with the idea, both ethical and practical, as I explained, a song composed with love will best resonate with creatures that have love as well, ideally love for you,” Lan Qiren explained, deciding to focus on the music because otherwise he’d just get angry and start shouting again, and that would be contrary to his goal of making nice. “Do you want to accidentally summon your ancestors from their graves?”
“But what if I use the res- the spiritual energy to emphasize the upbeat parts of the song, which are more generalized and generic in nature?” Wei Wuxian asked, and it was actually a good question, well within the bounds of orthodox experimentation. What a relief!
“Then you’ll end up summoning a mob of amorous ghosts,” Lan Qiren said, then grimaced. “I wouldn’t recommend it.”
“…wait. Are you saying that actually happened to someone?” Wei Wuxian peered up at Lan Qiren. “Not – not to you, Teacher Lan?”
Lao Nie had once asked Lan Qiren to play a particular song while they were night-hunting, omitting to mention that it was a romantic song popular in brothels; Lan Qiren, not being the sort of person to frequent such places, had not realized that he merely wanted background music and had thought that he’d meant for him to utilize the song as a weapon. He had added spiritual energy accordingly, thinking that it was some song-spell he was unfamiliar with, but game to try.
The effects had been…not quite what he would have wanted.  
In fact, if Lan Qiren recalled correctly, the only person who had laughed harder at the end result than Lao Nie had been –
“Your mother nearly got her head bitten off by a jiangshi because she was laughing too hard to lift her sword,” Lan Qiren said, then added, dryly, “You should endeavor not to follow her example if you are planning on using a dizi as your primary weapon. A sword can be used while laughing; a flute cannot.”
“I…would…bring both – wait, Teacher Lan, you night-hunted with my mother?”
“On rare occasions.” Now would be a good time to strike, Lan Qiren thought. “Come to me after classes tomorrow. If you are interested in improving your understanding of how spiritual energy interacts with musical composition, I have some texts that may be of interest to you.”
Wei Wuxian blinked, and then smiled lopsidedly, almost as if he were laughing at himself, then turned and grinned at Lan Qiren. “Absolutely, Teacher Lan! You bet!”
Satisfied, Lan Qiren inclined his head and turned to go.
“Oh, Teacher Lan, one more thing!”
Lan Qiren paused and turned back, looking at Wei Wuxian in silent question.
Wei Wuxian had on a rather deliberate appearance of being casual. “This is probably a weird question,” he said, “but it’s just something I’m curious to get your thoughts on. If you were to find a – let’s say, an item with considerable amounts of resentful energy, something that had been refined into a spiritual tool of great power. What would you do with it, assuming if you wanted to use it?”
“Full of resentful energy? That would be demonic cultivation,” Lan Qiren said, a little puzzled – not to mention annoyed at the subject coming up again. But then again, he supposed that such things had their place in most sect’s treasuries, even if they didn’t especially like to admit to it; the demonic cultivators of the past were uniformly insane, bloodthirsty monsters that had defaced tombs and used the blood of other cultivators to strengthen themselves and their tools, but the orthodox world often played games with whether their tools were as forbidden as the practice itself. Anyway, he supposed it was a good sign of trust that Wei Wuxian was asking, and he was trying to build a relationship with Wei Wuxian. “I assume that you would have already sought to liberate the guai?”
“The – guai – huh, yeah, I guess it would be a guai in some ways. Just without intelligence.”
“Are you entirely sure about that?” Lan Qiren asked dryly. “Guai made from objects tend to have intelligence in ways we don’t anticipate or recognize as intelligence. In the same way, a beast yao has discernable desires because beasts are similar to men, whereas a plant yao often act in ways that seem completely inexplicable to us. If the item in question were originally a rock, who is to say that we would understand how a rock thinks well enough to identify if it has intelligence or not?”
Wei Wuxian wrinkled his nose, thinking it over.
“First, seek to liberate the guai, or at least suppress it,” Lan Qiren said, easily falling back into pedagogy. “Depending on the type of guai, there are different songs that can be used. After that, if you really wish to use the item, there are arrays and talisman that get used for containing and guiding resentful energy – for instance, the Nie sect is well known for their expertise in this regard.”
“Because of their sabers?” Wei Wuxian blurted out, then looked horrified at himself.
Had Jiang Fengmian really told his ward such a secret? Lan Qiren thought to himself with irritation. He should know better; such a thing was meant to be limited to the sect leaders of the Great Sects alone – but then, Lan Qiren had never had a very high opinion of his fellow sect leader to begin with, so he supposed there was no reason to be disappointed.
“In part,” he said neutrally. “The Nie are also descended from butchers, a unclean profession. They have any number of ancestral inheritances that have become soaked in resentful energy over the decades, which they cannot eradicate and have instead opted to use. The current Nie sect leader, Chifeng-zun, is not inclined to use those things, so you wouldn’t have seen them, but the former sect leader, his father, was a little more liberal, so I have.”
Lan Qiren didn’t want to encourage Wei Wuxian’s obscene interest in demonic cultivation. But he did want his nephew to stay at the Cloud Recesses, rather desperately…
“I can write some examples up for you to review, if you like,” he offered begrudgingly. “Provided you promise to only experiment with them in my presence.”
Wei Wuxian was gaping at him, seemingly completely disbelieving. “…Teacher Lan would allow me to?”
Lan Wangji staying in the Cloud Recesses. Remember your goal.
“We shall see,” Lan Qiren said. “We would need to discuss the ethics involved first, and make a determination that it is acceptable, but I’m sure we can find a way to agree on that…I’ll be going now. If you happen to see my second nephew before I do, tell him I wish to speak with him.”
It was probably too late to cure or dissuade Lan Wangji from his love, if he’d reached the level of composing love songs, but at minimum Lan Qiren could encourage him to keep Wei Wuxian focused on…better things. Things like musical cultivation, for example, and not near-demonic cultivation. Well, as things went, even such a strange interest was still better than his brother’s disaster of a love, Lan Qiren reflected. He ought to count himself as fortunate – imagine if Wei Wuxian were not still so young and in a safe environment, and the war they were all expecting came to pass. That curiosity of his could get him into real trouble!
