Just read that it was very important to Con O'Neill that Izzy's drag makeup didn't "look comedic". He wanted it to look beautiful.

The funniest thing that could happen in ofmd season 2 is Stede and Izzy hanging out so much they accidentally become best friends and both absolutely horrified when someone (definitely Oluwande or Jim) points it out to them.
Like I can definitely see a situation happening where Stede goes off into danger and Izzy is adamant that he’s not going after him to help but it immediately cuts to a scene of him going after him and all you can hear is him going “stupid fucking Stede Bonnet” like we know he’d say something like that.
Enemies who grow to care about each other is my favourite thing.

how is the ofmd fandom coping with the fact that Izzy Enjoyers were right about literally everything and the first three eps are just The Izzy Hands Show? I've peeked at Izzy hate blogs and have been amused that it seems like they're just pretending none of those scenes happened and are just latching onto the one Stede/Ed scene while ignoring. literally everything we just saw

"He went mad, he tortured the crew, he took my fucking leg, cause i dared to mention your fucking name!"
Goddamn! This line! This line scratches a part of my brain in way that makes me sorta wish we had gotten a full season of angst (I'm glad we didn't though, i wouldn't be able to handle it) but my GOD it's just so good!
Con O'Neills acting and delivery in this scene is just amazing! The way he says "he took my fucking leg, cause i dared to mention your fucking name!" Like the words are seething out of him, he slams the bottle in his hand on the desk, like he can't fucking believe it, can't believe that ed, the man he's probably known from DECADES, would just shoot him, so easily, just for daring to utter fucking stede bonnets, fucking NAME out of his mouth!!
And it's not just cons delivery, it's the ed and stede angst of it all! It's the way ed is caught of guard with izzys audacity to even say "talk it through" the way stede used to say it. It's the way ed wouldn't accept hearing izzy say stedes name or mention eds feelings for stede, let alone infront of the crew. It's the look on eds face and the way he nodes his head like this is what you get, the second he shots izzy!
But yeah, that line is the epitome of brain scratching for me! Go listen to it again. I'm not giving this line the justice it deserves, go listen to it again!! It's glorious!

seen a couple people running to that "is it bad writing or do you not understand genre" post in regards to the ofmd upset. and let me remind people that this show was marketed as a romantic comedy, ESPECIALLY this season!
In that regard, I found an article/blog post that directly addresses the question "can you have character death in a romantic comedy?" And it really hits the nail on the head.
Tumblr media
Even if you were to make the argument "well it's a dark comedy!" or "its a pirate show!" there's still a balance that needs to be met if you don't want to alienate your audience.
Tumblr media
People are going to argue that the death was earned because they spent the entire season building up his character and "completing his arc". Well, I'll argue that they DIDN'T complete his arc. In fact they took about twelve steps back in his death scene by seemingly ret conning his progress and having him center Ed's feelings on his literal deathbed. So it really feels a lot like fridging, because that's exactly what it was. Izzy's death was for Ed's arc, not his own. And they spent so much time focusing on Izzy all season, focusing on his growth and giving him such a specific arc about queerness and recovery, that yeah, his death feels like a slap to the face and not a tragic story beat that makes the story all the richer.

Something about how Stede draws the sheer curtains he’s patched like kintsugi to provide them a space that belongs to them and them alone. No, the curtains don't really do anything to hide the bed, but it's not about that - it's about creating a shared space that surrounds them and protects them.
Tumblr media
Not to harp on the parallels too much, but consider this shot in Season 1 when Ed is crying in the bed and we see how bare and cold and exposed the room is, severed from Stede. There's no warmth, no safe space. Ed is curled into himself, but he's not safe. It's a mirror to his position as a child when he watched his father beat his mother. He's scared and despairing and he's trying to hide.
Then Stede comes back and he starts fixing things. He encloses the space again, he warms it up, he patches the holes. The patches are still patches; the curtains will never be pristine again, and neither will they. But that doesn't matter. Stede's putting it back together for himself and for Ed.
The camera movement is even the same, drawing away from Ed in the first shot and in the second—but in the first Ed is totally alone, isolated, blending into the darkness. In the second, Ed is distinct from the space; we can see his face and his expression as he turns from the window. And he's not alone. Stede moves into frame and closes the space. It's giving Ed that security; that he can be here, in the arms of the man he loves, and be surrounded by warmth and light. He doesn't have to curl up in fear. He can be safe.

every time i see "Ed asks Lucius to write down his lyrics" used as an argument for claiming that Ed can't write i just want to. you know. point out that Stede has Lucius write down everything he says?? and does?? all the time?? and when he can't find Lucius he asks Frenchie (who actually cannot write) to do it instead of just writing it himself. and we know Stede can write. it's got nothing to do with ability to write, just that the captains don't seem to want to write stuff themselves when they have an employee whose job is to do that exact thing for them

Why wouldn't Stede be walking next to Ricky with the knife on him? It was his 'plan', he's the one who looked most right in the uniform, he's the captain. He's been training for this and improving. Izzy could have pushed him out of the way when Ricky pulled a gun and taken the hit which would have been more meaningful.
