An Act of Infinite Optimism
Apollo notices it quickest.
Some might say he could have been quicker on the uptake, which, okay, rude. He’d like to see this hypothetical some do any better, considering the circumstances.
He thinks he can be forgiven for being somewhat distracted given he and Trucy found Lamiroir unresponsive inside an instrument case.
So no, he doesn’t notice while he’s sent Trucy to get help, staying to make sure Lamiroir keeps breathing, that whoever hurt her doesn’t come back to finish the job.
(Every time he blinks, Mr. LeTouse’s face swims in front of his eyes, gasping his last terrified breaths as Apollo can do nothing. He’s not letting that happen again. He won’t.)
But once help has arrived, after Ema’s let them ride in the squad car with her to the Hickfield clinic, and they’ve received the news that Lamiroir is going to be all right?
Things fall into place fast enough to give him whiplash.
It’s the first time Apollo’s seen her without her mantle, is the thing. And his brain, in between being desperately glad she’s okay and dutifully recording her account of the attack, absentmindedly notes that she has the same stickity-up cowlick Trucy gets whenever her top hat is removed.
It must be a thing that people with that kind of wavy hair share, he assumes, as they have the same pseudo-curls framing their faces and fighting to escape the confines of their respective hair ties. True, Trucy’s hair is a much darker shade than the singer’s, almost verging on black, but apart from that, she could have a career as a Lamiroir impersonator later in life. It may not pay as well as magic, but she’d be able to pull it off. Especially with how similar their noses are.
In fact, call him crazy, but Lamiroir’s eyes and Trucy’s are practically the exact same shadOHMYGOD.
“Polly?”
“I’MFINE!” Bursts from the Chords of Steel before he can stop it. “I, uh. I stubbed my toe!”
Trucy cocks her head to the side, squinting at him. “How? There isn’t anything to.”
“I stubbed it. On my shoe.” Apollo lies.
Trucy’s squint only gets more pronounced, but thankfully Lamiroir’s real doctor comes in with the chart that corroborates her testimony.
She doesn’t bring it up as they head back to Sunshine Coliseum to see if he can get anything more out of “Uncle” Valant, but Apollo’s mind keeps darting between the evidence for the actual court case which is his job and the evidence for this completely insane hypothesis that‘s probably a product of stress. Or sleep deprivation. Or both.
He just needs proof that this is nothing but a delusion. Then it’ll stop bugging him.
Which is why he awkwardly asks, “So, if Valant was partners with your father, was he friends with your mother too?”
Trucy freezes.
Only for a moment. To anyone else, it looks as though she’s smiling bright as usual as she follows along beside him.
But even without his bracelet tightening around his wrist, he can spot her fingers pinching the folds of her cloak.
“I dunno! I mean, she musta been, since Uncle Valant and Daddy were best friends and partners!” It’s almost impressive how she deflects the question.
“But you’re not sure?” He probes gently. “Trucy, if you don’t wanna tell me, it’s okay. I trust you, I just wanted—“
“No, it’s fine!” She grins, a brilliant performance. “I can’t really remember Mommy too well—Daddy always said when I was really little, one of her tricks went wrong and she vanished! Somewhere where even Daddy, who’s the best magician of all time, couldn’t find her! Unlucky, huh?”
“Yeah,” Apollo says, screaming internally. “Unlucky.”
Spotting Ema spraying for blood in the hall where Lamiroir said she was attacked is so great a relief Apollo thinks he might faint.
“Trucy, do you think you could try to find Valant for me?” He leans against a wall in what he hopes is a casual way, crossing his legs. “I’m kinda worn out from…everything, and you probably have some magician experience that lets you know where he’ll pop up, right.”
Trudy gives him that suspicious, squinty look again, before she snickers.
“Really, Polly, I’m not that delicate! You can just say, ‘oh I need to go to the bathroom’, you don’t need to dance around it all the time!”
“WH—!” Apollo sputters, “No, I—!”
“Feel free to take your time, Polly!” Trucy sing-songs as she skips away. “I’ll bring Uncle Valant to the stage when you’re done!”
An aggravated groan drags itself out of Apollo’s chest. He cares about Trucy, but he’d really appreciate it if she stopped trying to kill him with embarrassment.
“If it’s that bad, you could always use the staff bathroom.” Pipes up the detective behind him. “It’s down the hall and—“
“I DON’T NEED TO!” The Chords of Steel interject.
At Ema’s disapproving glare, he clears his throat, focuses on his volume modulation. “I just, uh, needed to talk to you about something. In private.”
Ema lowers the spray bottle. “About the case? But why send Trucy away?”
“Not…about the case, exactly? But it’s not unrelated, per se…”
“I haven’t got time for riddles, Apollo.” Ema says, folding her arms. “Just spit it out already!”
Apollo exhales.
“I think Lamiroir might be Trucy’s birth mother.”
Ema stares at him.
“This isn’t just because they have brown hair and blue eyes, is it?” One hand begins to rifle through her satchel in a now familiar search for Snackoos. “Because I have brown hair and blue eyes, Apollo, and last I checked the only family member I’ve got is coming up for parole upstate—“
“No, thAT’S—?!” Apollo focuses on forcing his voice down to a harsh whisper. “Okay, fine, it was kind of based on that, but your eyes aren’t the exact same color as Trucy’s. Lamiroir’s are. And the similarities don’t stop there!”
At Ema’s doubtful gaze, he persists. “Plus, Trucy said her mom ‘vanished’ when she was little, which lines up with Lamiroir saying she can’t recall any of her past before she and Machi got their start—even if she did, Lamiroir may not recognize Trucy now she’s gotten older, especially since she only has Trucy’s voice to go on! Trucy herself admitted that she was so young, she had very little memory of her birth mother! And, she introduced herself as Trucy Wright, not—!“
“Okay, okay.” The sharp munching of Snackoos cuts off his tirade as Ema continues. “You have a lot of talk. But that doesn’t actually prove any relation between the two suspects here. Could just be a whole load of weird coincidences.”
“Suspects?” Apollo mouths to himself.
“No, what we need is definitive evidence.” Ema shakes her head, popping one last Snackoo into her mouth. “Decisive evidence.”
She flips her glasses down over her eyes. “And the only way to get that, is through Science.”
Apollo blinks at her, overcome with a looming sense of foreboding. “We?”
“Yes, Apollo.” Ema grins victoriously. “We.”

Listen I’m sure someone has already talked about this scene, and way better than I ever could, but it makes me so feral and I need to talk about it too
This is hands down the most depressing scene in the entirety of NtN in my opinion.
Surface level it’s Gideon yelling at Crux, but the significance here comes from the exact word choice. “You could have lived for her. But you didn’t know how.”
She uses past tense.
It’s not about Crux (who arguably did live for Harrow, considering his purpose was raising and protecting her, and could by all means still do this if he changed his mind about dying for Harrow.) It’s not about the congregation who worshipped her.
It’s about Gideon, who can’t live for Harrow anymore, because she’s dead. It’s about the promise she broke at the end of the first book. She’s talking about herself.
Harrow made her promise that when it comes down to it, Gideon needs to save herself. If only one of them can survive, it has to be Gideon.
Tumblr media
At the end of the first book, Harrow is actively planning to sacrifice herself so Gideon can live, bringing up the promise and then diving into what this is actually about. Namely, how she owes Gideon her life back.
Tumblr media
And Gideon breaks that promise, instead deciding to sacrifice herself for Harrow.
“I can’t keep my promise because the entire point of me is you. There is no me without you.”
Gideon doesn’t know how to live for Harrow, how to exist without her, even though it’s the most important thing Harrow ever asked of her—and so she dies for her instead.
“You could have lived for her. But you didn’t know how.”
And the sacrifice ended up being rejected by Harrow, because it’s not what Harrow wanted. It never was. So Gideon ended up feeling rejected and like her life and giving it up wasn’t worth anything. And she still immediately offers herself up again without hesitation. She’s ready to die for Harrow all over again, even now that she’s already dead.
“Die. Die for her. It’s the only goddamn good you’ll ever do her.”
Gideon is fucking furious—so much that Nona can’t even place her voice anymore—but not at any of the people who would rightfully deserve her fury. Not at Crux. She’s furious at herself. This whole scene is so damn heartbreaking to me.
And out of all the cruel things Crux has done to Gideon throughout her life, this might be the worst one: telling the girl who died for the Reverend Daughter once and was ready to die for her a second time that she couldn’t even get that right. That she managed to screw up the one purpose she was actually supposed to serve, the only good she’s ever done for Harrow.
Tumblr media
Gideon is dead. She can’t do what Harrow asked and live for her anymore. What the hell is she supposed to do if she can’t die for her, either?

like, seriously, can we talk about how WRONG what he did to miles was? they kinda put all the emotional baggage aside in the movies but in the spider within short we actually had a small understanding of how exactly being spiderman FUCKS YOU UP.
YOU SEE THIS SHIT?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
miles is a kid! he became spiderman at 13!
if miles felt like THAT before, imagine what he’s going through after atvs.
being told that your father has to die, your closest friends betray you, being chased by people who are supposed to be like you, who are supposed to get you and have your back, being hurt, smashed against a train by this massive, mentally unstable man who put the blame on you for something that was COMPLETELY out of your control and whispers into your ear that you are a mistake and that you do not belong with them???
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SIR THAT’S A 15 YEARS OLD BOY.
i get what he went through, i understand what he says and i don’t really hate him hate him, like, partially hate him. BUT that’s no excuse for what he did to miles.
kinda wanted to share this because people go crazy for him because of his character design, his power and general ☕️ charm 👀 but I WILL NOT FORGET NOR FORGIVE WHAT HE HAS DONE TO MY BABY BOY

Miguel walks into the room smiling pleasantly while Hobie, Gwen, Pavitr and especially Miles watch on in awe.
Gwen: I never saw him really smile.
Pavitr: Are his eyebags somehow.... Less prominent on his face?
Hobie: You reckon he offed someone?
Miles: Or he's about to finally kill me-- OMG he is looking at me!!!
Miguel: Hey Miles! I'm sorry for the way I acted. Don't worry we'll fix the problems you made.
Miles flinches as Miguel ruffles his hair and walks away.
Hobie: Alright... * Hobie removes you from your hiding place while you yelp like a scared critter * What did you do?
You: I.... Maaaay.... Have... Hit him with a tranquilizer strong enough to down a rhino.
You give a nervous smile while everyone looks at you dumbstruck.
Pavitr laughing: You are so dead when he finds out.
Gwen placing a somber hand on your shoulder: Way to take one for the team.
Miles solemnly: You shall be missed.
Hobie grinning: I knew you had it in ya.
You pratically crying: You're all welcome I just wanted him to rest for a while... He is going to kill me isn't he?!
Peter B having overheard everything: IF! He finds out.
You in fetal position: This place has cameras everywhere he WILL find out.
Peter B: Oh.... Right.... Nice knowing you.
Lyla: Girl! Don't worry I gotcha! I erased all footage of that. As far as the big man spider knows, he just fainted from exhaustion!!!
You crying tears of happiness: Thank you Lylaaaaaa! You are aweso- wait a minute?! Couldn't you have told me that sooner?!!!! I've been hiding for HOURS!!!!
Lyla laughing: I know it was hilarious. Hope that thought you a lesson tho. Byeeeee~~~~
At that you pout and Lyla records it, after all your pout is very similar to her boss', she plans showing it to ya as a collage at your wedding after giving the whole "they are so similar it is a wonder you didn't get together sooner" speech.

NO BECAUSE LET ME TELL YOU WHY THIS HURTS ME.
lo’ak feels less than. neglected. misunderstood and unloved. he does not feel seen, which is the most important thing, the deepest form of connection, to the na’vi. he tries so hard to be what his father wants, what he sees neteyam get praised for being.
a warrior. a protector. a fighter.
and who’s the mightiest warrior around?
Toruk Makto. His dad.
so he goes around to the seasoned warriors and the elders of his clan, asking for stories of Toruk Makto, specifically how he dressed. and the morning before the raid, away from his family’s eyes, he paints on pigment.
he wears his fathers image with pride, flying straight into a battle like a warrior.
and he stands in front of his father, upset but understanding in some way. he’s apologetic, but he doesn’t regret his decoration.
that is, until Jake says
get that crap off your face.
because when jake looks his son in the face after the explosion, eyes unfocused and body trembling, he doesn’t see a warrior.
he sees a soldier of war, battered and bloody.
and his fourteen year old son should not be celebrating that.
he sees himself in the worst way possible. no elder tells the story of those that died in the War.
Trudy. Grace. Tsu’tey. Eytukan.
they sing the songs of their lives, sure. but their deaths are never the focus.
when jake sees his son, decorated as he was, he sees heroic ignorance. he sees a child playing war.
he sees crap.
and jake is so tired of war, so tired of fighting. but he misses the point of lo’ak’s efforts.
look at me, father. do you see me?
and jake, terrified and fraying at the edges after seeing his sons in the middle of an aerial attack, says
get that crap off your face.

Bruce absolutely breaking down over the loss of Jason and taking it out on Dick, the most available and easy target in this moment. Blaming anyone else because he can’t bear the weight nor admit the guilt he feels—that his statements should be directed at himself. Bruce feels resentment at himself that he never adopted Dick like he did Jason.

Also, I appreciate the slowly distancing fade out of the last several panels as a visual display of the emotional reflection Dick’s living in this moment with the batcave as an allegory of the tumultuous upheaval the bat mantel has wrought on the family in the here and now.

ok no way henry just told shawn that he never should’ve come back to santa barbara. that is an UNBELIEVABLE thing to say to your child; especially when he’s just made a decision that could cost him his livelihood. a parent should be in your corner no matter what, but especially when you make a mistake. but henry is only angry; like he always is. and shawn thinks he deserves it. he really thinks he deserves it.

im having so many feelings about john and gale in the new episode and i NEED to share them. buckle up guys this is a long one because this last episode was angsty for these two and i love psychoanalysis
HUGEEE MOTA SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!
first and foremost, john is absolutely not okay. like i know we have seen this so many times already because he’s been on a mental decline since episode six but it’s gotten worse. the beginning scenes where him and gale fetch the water and gale tries to create some playful banter only to receive a mostly silent john is scary, especially because he knows that man is a chatterbox that can’t shut up to save his life. something has changed and gale knows, but gale doesn’t push it.
second of all, the topic of marge. nobody would ever make fun of a guy getting a letter from his girl because that’s the only source of joy they get inside the hell of a pow camp. but the way john seems almost annoyed by it, as if it is personally inconveniencing him is so noticeable. now one could argue it’s just because he doesn’t have a girl back home, but i don’t think he cares even a little bit about that. john has realized that his home is wherever gale is. which brings me to my third topic.
the scene where gale tells john he asked marg to marry him. the fact that he doesn’t even say those exact words, but rather “popped the question and she said yes”. god, the tension in that scene was goddamn near unbearable. john is entirely stoic which is concerning knowing that he is a man of emotion who feels things on an entirely different level than most men. something is turning within his brain and his way of congratulating gale was so robotic and almost calculated. i feel like a part of him kind of froze in that moment. i mean, he likely knew they would never get anywhere serious because hell this is the 1940s in the middle of a war but still. his buck is no longer his. and who does he have besides buck?
which brings me to one of my final points: john is realizing he doesn’t have anybody. that scene between them where he mentioned he never got letters because he didn’t set it up right, and was so concerned gale would only know this version of him and not his old self. i don’t think anything gale could’ve said would help, but it was nice that he tried at least… john’s whole world is gale, but gale has his world back in america. he has a home. he has something to return to and someone to love when he’s out of this mess. all john is going to return home to is his own loneliness and severe ptsd. john is a feeler and he feels things deeply and painfully, like a knife in the belly, especially when it comes to gale. the man he’s in love with has a woman to return to, and he might as well just be a legend that gale tells his kids about someday. but to john, gale is everything. he will never forget.
anyways this episode for them was VERY angsty and it’s late and i’m tired so this is kind of all over the place but i wanted to share my main thoughts. thank you for reading if you got this far i’ll probably continue my rant tomorrow depending on if this actually gets any traction LMAO i still don’t know how tumblr works.

I’ve seen people talk about how tragic it was that Scar started his episode with wanting friends and then getting a task that asks the opposite, but no one is talking about the true tragedy here, the apocalypse.
People are chasing after him, people are out for his head, his blood, his soul and he desperately, desperately tries to get away. Then the sheer panic when he dies, the panic he was in getting cornered with the same people who killed him, yelling at him to read a book, and all he could do was pull his bow and point it at anyone who dares come close as if he was a feral animal. That, that was what was most tragic to me.
Scar’s been the happy go lucky one throughout the seasons, his entire personality revolves around the cocky business man facade after all. But then this session rolls around and suddenly we see the face behind the mask and he’s scared, he’s lonely and oh so hurt.
